The love I have for my dog will never grow old or cold. I am blessed to have my golden retriever Ted with me for as long as we, God willing, are together.
This song brings me to tears because it reminds my heart of the great love I have had with my bride these past 39 years. Despite everything life brings us, as long as we can "row together", I could not be more in love. My cup truly runs over.
@@robingagan6288 "The early imagery of the lyrics describes the challenges of love: "Love is handsome, love is kind" during the novel honeymoon phase of any relationship. However, as time progresses, "love grows old, and waxes cold." Even true love, the lyrics say, can "fade away like morning dew."" But have changed over time: "The water is wide, I cannot get o'er Neither have I wings to fly Give me a boat that can carry two And both shall cross my true love and I. "
Dave, I am sure I do not have to tell you how blessed you are. Thank you for sharing and spreading hope. May the Good Lord continue to Bless you and your wife. God Bless, Sean
Absolutely! His backup singers have been with him forever. They speak so highly of him & the joy of contributing to his music. I saw him in concert once in Houston and as I was driving home, I passed his tour bus on IH45. The blinds on the bus were up and he and his mates were eating cake. He had announced that night that it was Arnold's birthday. I honked my horn and James looked out the window, smiled & waved! I tell you, I was over the moon. Never will forget it.
I'd be honored if some fans of James Taylor's later compositions (late 80s & onward) would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of NEVER DIE YOUNG and THE FROZEN MAN on my channel. Real live acoustic with no editing. Thanks and please excuse the promo.
I never knew the history behind this song. I of course first heard it by James Taylor. It has very old roots and recorded by hundreds of people changing the name and lyrics. Mostly because the composer is unknown. However, any song that James Taylor does is beautiful.
The great strength of James Taylor's singing, especially in ballads like this, is the calm, undemonstrative tonality; he sings with a controlled emotion which makes the whole experience so much stronger for the listener. But then, he is an astonishingly accomplished musician with enduring quality - who else could continue to write great new songs after 30 years while also giving fresh voice to familiar standards?
James Taylor could sing the entire State Farm Evidence of Coverage Statement and it would move me to 😭 tears. What a magical singer and storyteller he is.
The song appears to tell of the progression of love from something that is yearned for and fought for, into something that grows deep and lasting and finally fading away as the morning dew into memories past. Which seems to be the progression of life. Beautiful song.
I was Blessed seeing James Taylor at Red Rocks 2014. I sat center 3rd row. He was just as wonderful as if it were 1969. This is a beautiful song. No one can do it justice like James.
I agree with all who love james Taylor. What a rare gentle spirit. Listen to the horn on the second verse. Heartache. What a great rendition. JT is a national treasure.
My Daughter Clare sings this song so beautifully it brings tears to my eyes every time....she is going to be a star...such a lovely girl....hope i live to see it all
My 10 yr old daughter sings this song ..learnt it from listening to james taylor ...could not learn it from a better singer....she is going to be a star ...and a really nice person too..thank you for sharing this ....
I agree. But though it has been around forever( hundreds of years) and performed by many, this particular cover is my favorite because of the man singing it. Love ya JT
my granda passed away recently, and when I as younger he would sing this song to me while i combed his hair, we played this version at his funeral, it would of meant everything to him.x
The water is wide, I can't cross over And neither have the wings to try To be a boat, that will carry two And both shall row My love and I There is a ship, and she sails the sea She’s loaded deep, as deep can be But not so deep, as the love I’m in I know not how, I’ll sink or swim Oh love is handsome, and love is fine the sweetest jul, when first is new but love grows old and waxes cold and fades away, like summer dew Give me a boat that can carry two And both shall row My love and I And both shall row My love and I
A great guy. Seen him in Glasgow a couple of years ago. He spent the interval sat on the edge of the stage just talking to people. I know he does this at his shows, a genuine person and a great talent.
That is I grew up learning guitar from James Taylor. Just love his music forever! Seasoned musician - timeless in his music. Can't say the same for todays music. Thank you James for your inspiration and such wonderful wonderful music. Don't ever stop playing or singing and bringing us your wonderful music to listen to. Blessings.
In an interview JT said he has always played it safe with his music. If that is true then it's good enough for me! I can't imagine how his music could be any better!
love this song very much after watching the movie with the same title "the river wild" with Meryl Streep in the main role.. James Taylor was amazing and very sincere... Mary Traver(Peter,Paul&Mary) was awesome... both with beautiful, lovely voices..
I remember watching this performance live on PBS TV (WGBH-Boston) back in 1993 and thought it was such a beautiful rendition of a classic folk song. And watching this now 20 years later, I feel exactly the same way. JT & the Boston Pops (John Williams conducting). Can't get much better than that! Terrific upload!
a beautiful folk voice, classic gtar skills, super interpretation/presentation, an A440 ear and a taste for tasty tunes - he's got it all - thanks for the years of joy, James. sc
O Waly, OWaly is an English tune, from Somerset, not Scottish. The 'Wal' is pronounced like the 'Wal' in ''Wales.' It is a magnificent tune. A great hymn is written to it...'The Gift of Love.'
i love this song! my granda used to sing it to me when i was a little girl while i sat on his knee and he would play with my hair...he's now near the end of his life,he's been fighting lung cancer since January, i love you Granda!
Hi James, voice long ago from Harry's Bar in Chapel Hill, before I went off to do things for US in many places. Now back home again and trying to find my sources/inspirations/touch stones. You were one, and with you and "The Virginians" with my friend and 'mountain man' Bill Swofford. He ("Oliver") from down the hill from me up in Glendale Springs.
JT always puts my mind at ease when I hear his voice and the stories he tells. I can always count on JT for tension relief. The traffic in Denver sucks..
Sweet! What a precious memory to hold dear & close, Forever! I just heard this for the 1st time ever, a couple of days ago! Fell in love with it 'at 1st hearing'! ;)
44 years ago tomorrow. We played the best version of this song at our wedding. That is JT duet with Karla Bonoff. J D Souther singing harmonies. Garth Hudson on accordion. Kenny Edwards on bass.
What a soothing gift we've been gifted by the voice of J.T. I've heard this melody put to the melody of When I Survey The Wondrous Cross at church and it is amazing how each syllable fits perfectly within the melody.
Thanks for posting ...so sweet a song ... almost about my mom and dad - neither knew how to swim - but they paid thousands of dollars to install an awesome swimming pool for the family who visit- daughters, son, and many of their children. Now they are no longer together, mom is in alzheimers home and dad is not there. I pray that our God will reunite them again soon- as He promise - when His kingdom is restored on earth. .... luv to all... more recent update- my dad just died last week, but there is MUCH hope we will see him again.... John 5:25-28
This beautiful song reminds me of the poem by William Butler Yeats..the Irish poet..Lake Isle of Innisfree...somehow the song and the poem seem to go together...a peaceful existence desired by all. I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made; Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet’s wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart’s core.

My go to song and version after standing up for others and getting knocked down hard. Love does grow old. But love also lingers of its own accord. Like the scent from a faded pressed rose found in an old book of poems. Thanks.
I have only just rediscovered this song on youtube, my previous favorite version has been deleted.....How could they!!! Heard this ..eerily...in the vatican in Rome,(not JT singing tho)stopped me in my tracks then too. Like a long lost friend recognised in an unfamiliar place, truly wonderful.

My good friend learned this beautiful song to sing in memory of my very lovely Scottish husband ❤

That's nice but I read that this song is about love dying

James has been giving me a lump in my throat for 40 years. If there's a heaven his voice is playing the loudspeaker...
I saw him do this in Dublin. The whole audience sang it with him in full voice. Wonderful!!!
I would have loved to have been there.
I would have loved to have seen it on video! So cool that the entire audience knows the song!
That must have been amazing.
Heavenly..brings me to tears, thank you James
One of the most beautiful renditions of this old traditional ballad EVER. No one comes close to that voice.
Karla Bonoff comes close, but no one is James Taylor. He’s in a league of his own.
This song expresses the way I feel missing my son who died in 2005.
James Taylor is one of the most genuine and talented vocalists/musicians/songwriters to grace our stage in modern times. He's the real deal.

This is like salve on an open wound . So smooth and sweet sounding. It's the healing sound of one of the greatest in our time, to sooth our souls.
One of my very favorite Taylor performances. A joy to hear!
Such a wonderful song. I'm listening to it for more than 20 years now and it's still one of my favorite songs
The water is wide, I can't cross over
And neither have the wings to try
To be a boat, that will carry two
And both shall row
My love and I
There is a ship, and she sails the sea
She’s loaded deep, as deep can be
But not so deep, as the love I’m in
I know not how, I’ll sink or swim
Oh love is handsome, and love is fine
the sweetest jul, when first is new
but love grows old and waxes cold
and fades away, like summer dew
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row
My love and I
And both shall row
My love and I
His voice is still as beautiful as ever.
When I watch James' audience I see two things. Joy and contentment. . . Just as it should be. Peace, Baby James.
