- reMarkable Tablet Review UPDATE 2020 | Note Taking Tablet Workflow | Version 2.0
In 2019 Greg did his first reMarkable tablet review. The 2.0 update has come out for the reMarkable and we have had requests for Greg to show how he uses this new version in his workflows and as a CEO. This is his favorite note taking tablet, after trying another, and something he uses together with his Tul Discbound Notebook. He's now been using his reMarkable for almost a year and still loves it!
Greg talks about how he saves and sends PDFs from his reMarkable, changes the tip on his stylus, how he organizes his folders and notebooks for efficiency, and how he uses quicksheets.

I love that this wasn't JUST a review, but a REAL LIFE practical breakdown of work usage!
Stay tuned for our unboxing of the new Remarkable 2 as soon as it arrives!
@@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment o you reccommend any case for adding a light to the device? Or in your work experience have you really never needed it in the dark?
Haven't needed a light. I haven't seen any cases that come with a light, so you might need to buy one of those clip on reading lights.
@@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment Has the Remarkable 2 arrived yet?
What I've been doing and it's worked for the past year or so, once I'm done with a meeting and any pending items, I send a copy of the notes to my Evernote internal email, and within Evernote create a table of contents with past meetings for reference.
That way I can access the data both on EN (searchable and other device options) and also on the rMk as you do, works great.
Really good video, thanks for sharing.
That was an excellent suggestion for highlighting the date on multiple meeting notes - thanks
Considering getting one now that I'm the head of product development at my job rather than an engineer. I have so many more notes to keep track of now. It was so helpful to have a more business minded review of the device, and perfect timing too because I guess you just uploaded it!
Thanks for the review, just ordered one!
Great! You won't regret it!
Version 2 is out check it out mate
@@aquajetz1 lol yeah, they made the announcement literally the day my v1 showed up.... Thought about returning it but it is making such a big impact on my day to day I think I will keep it rather than wait till July.
By the way, thanks for replying and helping all the people who commented on the video. 😊
Thanks for noticing
Yes, very helpful! So many questions I had you answered - such as editing & erasing capacity - & capacity to send off. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for the useful tips ! I was looking thru few tech reviews and didn’t get as much practical info as this review ! Thank you !
Glad it was helpful!
Welcome to the Remarkable update video! As you can see Greg loves his tablet and brings it everywhere with him.
Greg, I love my remarkable much more, when I saw your video! You are a perfect salesman and remarkable should reward it. Remarkable 2 is already ordered and i Am looking forward to watch your review.
We're all excited for Remarkable 2!
Did you receive it already?
@@NeloNath No, Delivery was postponed to October.
Well done Sir. Thank you so much for this. Excellent choice for uni.
Since Greg's video, firmware 2.1.1.3 has been released.
Software version 2.1.1.3 changed the "Move" control to a "Clipboard" type control.
So now I can move or copy a section of a page with in the same page (same as old control) or...
move or copy it to one or more pages within the same notebook OR to a totally different notebook.
That is the feature I have been waiting for.
Wow, that sounds cool!
Great video ~ this is going to make my year ahead much easier to find what I need to find. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you very much. It is very helpful!
Hi greg, Cat here, I've been WISHING for a remarkable for months! Just because you are doing a review, I'm gonna buy it! My stars are aligning. you've shown that the REmarkable is even more useful than I thought. I was needing it only for drawing markups and doodling. LOL. what was I thinking, this is like a MIND. plus it files stuff, oh boy! Kudos to you for doing a great demo and review. I feel like I could just pick up a Remarkable and put it right to work.
Awesome!!
Thanks for this real cases of use! I preorder Remarkable 2. Bye bye from Italy :-)

Thanks Greg for this video! I was thinking to buy one. But obviously I trust you! So I finally will buy one!
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you so very much, Greg. I had sent you some questions through a few of your earlier videos. However, this video has answered all my questions . I can’t thank you enough because I work with PDFs all day long and I was looking for the Remarkable2 in order to save my vision. I work with PDFs on my iPad Pro and while it’s really good (and Goodnotes is a terrific app), I am concerned about eye strain so I hope the Remarkable2 will ease the strain. Cheers from New Zealand.
Glad you got your questions answered!
Just ordered version 2. Looking forward implementing some of the ideas you shared.

Thanks for sharing this video! I really appreciate seeing real life application besides the marketing advertising.

The trouble I have with iPad is that I can only use it within my house. Doesn’t function otherwise. I need the mobility feature!
Its not available in India yet, I cant afford it now. But within November, hope to buy it. From life long learner a dream for this year.
very good video!
If I am misty notetaking, should I get the remarkable 1 or the Mobiscribe Origin? Price is the same.
Hey where's Tasmania on your map in the background? That's like having NZ without the south island haha.. Tasmania Matters!! Haha. Oh, and good reveiw by the way!!
Now I can't un-see it...
Thank you for your reviews. I’ve really enjoyed them.
I currently use an iPad Pro but must admit that the ReMarkable is interesting me. I’d love to hear from an iPad user that opted for the ReMarkable despite owning an iPad. Does it offer an advantage over the iPad?
I would summarise it as the following,
Main advantages are:
- reduced eye strain (also doesn't disturb your sleep cycle when using it before going to bed)
- there are no apps on the device to distract you
- easier to carry with (especially the new remarkable)
- the writing experience (though a bit subjective as the iPad pro paired with the apple pencil are also very good)
- battery life
Main disadvantages are:
- no backlighting so you need external light to write/read in the dark
- less memory (remarkable has 8GB, which is enough honestly unless you want to dump every book you know of on it, but the iPad Pro has way more)
- much fewer functionalities (biggest one: colour, Ipad Pro is amazing for digital drawing, the remarkable to me feels more like a sketching-device; but also things like browsing the internet or doing other tasks impossible on the remarkable)
- slow response times of the screen (intrinsic to e-ink, although the remarkable is pretty decent, compared to the iPad Pro it's a turtle)
In the end the purposes of the two devices are just very different. The Ipad Pro is meant to be a do-it-all, the ReMarkable is meant to be a specific work-horse. For me the ReMarkable is very much worth it, but i'd say test it out for a week or two and otherwise send it back (they have a very decent return policy)
Lewis in the UK, oh God yes! As a writer it will mean leaving less of a paper trail, searching for paper and trying to integrate lost notes. Size and weight is also a big factor. I’m getting more convinced to purchase.
The audio quality is amazeballs
Our videographer will be happy to hear that!
When there is no difference in performance? Why then change it anyways?
There is. Typically for me it lasts up to two weeks of average daily use. As the tip wears down, there is less of a resistance feel (to replicate a paper surface). As soon as I begin to feel a smooth motion, I replace the tip, even though it is still usable. EDIT: If I can pull out the tip by my fingernails with ease, and not using the extraction tool, it is also a gauge for me that it needs to be replaced.
How do you deal with the high lighter, when you have completed the task? In my physical notebook I stopped using highlighters because you can't erase them - would that be possible with the Remarkable? I thought of using exclamation marks, because I can easily erase them without destroying my text.
I don’t think you can erase just the highlighter.
@@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment What happens with the highlights when you convert the handwritten note to text? Are they highlights still visible?
Thank you for the informative video!
I have some questions if you don't mind.
1. How's the battery? I would probably use it during meetings as well. Do I need to keep it plugged in for almost the entire day?
2. Does it support colors when you're taking notes? Colored text and colored highlights are a huge thing for me, it's very helpful when reviewing the notes.
3. Does it allow users to export their notes to the cloud?
Thank you!
1. Lasts 3-5 days ( 4 on average ) so no, you would not need to keep it plugged in all day
2. It does not support colors. As it is an e ink canvas screen, which does not have color, you can, however highlight.
3. Yes! Absolutely! Download the remarkable app on your phone or computer and simply press upload on your tablet and it will transfer a copy to both the cloud and your computer and phone.
Hope this helps! (I am not a professional, lol, just someone who has the answers to your questions)
Additionally, remarkable 2 (the second version) is being released soon, it has 2 weeks of battery life and other improvements.
Cheers!
I heard in 2.0 version of OS you have swipe left and right gestures to switch pages. Is there an option to turn those gestures OFF in settings? Because for me they are making device unusable. I do not want to go around holding device and thinking wether accidental gesture turned page or not, don't want even think about such possibility there. For now my solution is to avoid update ...
Greg says he has to press pretty hard to get it to switch pages. So I wouldn't worry too much about accidentally switching pages. It doesn't look like there is an option to turn this function off.
Many of your viewers are brand new to Remarkable. I just got mine today and listened to your RUclips thinking it would offer ideas o wise use of my new tool. You may not want to explain to pop off the top of your stylus for refills unless you specify that it is the white stylus. I did that on my brand new black stylus and the only thing Remarkable is that I just lost my eraser. :(
Sorry to hear that! This video was made before the black stylus existed.
Excellent review. Does this sync to my iPhone notes at all?
No it doesn’t.
1:38 You can tell a difference. Typically for me it lasts up to two weeks of average daily use. As the tip wears down, there is less of a resistance feel (to replicate a paper surface). As soon as I begin to feel a smooth motion, I replace the tip, even though it is still usable.
2 weeks is horrible... It shouldn’t wear down at all.
@@Nipponing I've looked at a lot of reviews, and I've heard people give time ranges of usually about 1-3 months per tip, and this is the first time I've ever seen a duration this low. I don't have one, so I can't speak from experience, but I would say that the tips last much longer than 2 weeks for most people.
Yes, the tip can be used for far longer. It looks ugly when worn down. And I’d say, in the end it’s down to how much you use it per day. I said two weeks but I have used it for a month or more, but then miss the friction feel as it wears down and becomes smooth, though it’s still perfectly useable. I don’t think there is an ideal solution out there to provide a paper like feel - or as close as - on any device. Either the surface has to have a layer that provides the resistance/friction - which might affect latency - or it has to be the tip. Even pencil tips on paper blunt and smooth out which is why we sharpen them, right? The Supernote A5 and A6 pen is really nice. Though even that tip will wear down after 6 months - so says some blurb. The cost of replacement is higher though but probably equivalent to replacing reMarkable tips over the same period if changing tips out every 2-3 weeks.
Thank you for the video, it was really helpful in understanding better the 2.0 firmware uses.
A quick question... Are you going to buy the new "reMarkable 2" and also make a review of it?
Cheers and thank you again!
Yes! Greg just preordered his this week!
How do I connect my device to home WiFi? It never works for me, it let me connect to my phone hotspot but not home wifi
This is a great device and I'm already thinking of ordering one now but what happens when you lose your tablet ? any function to protect the access to it ?
There is a security setting where you can set a passcode. Then all of your information can be saved to the cloud so you can access it if you lose the tablet.
I really love it I absolutely do but for me as a student I don't see myself being able to afford this thing. One question though; would it be possible to do trigonometry on this, meaning are there functions for making exact lines, draw parallels, make perfect circles with a defined radius, that sorta stuff
I would say it's just like having a piece of paper. It doesn't have any extra features to help with that.
The reMarkable 2 is more affordable at $399 at least.
I'm a math student, and I was thinking the same thing. I just saved up enough money to buy the reMarkable 2, but it won't arrive until October (I'm pre-ordering it) so unfortunately I won't be able to let you know anytime soon.
However, it stands to reason that you can do geometry and trigonometry the same way you would on paper. If you want a straight line (assuming they don't have a straight line functionality), you can just use a ruler. Personally, I actually think using a physical ruler is far superior to the straight line function, simply because it's what I'm used to. A compass would be hard to replace, but I actually have a compass attachment in which you simply insert the pencil and it works like a compass, so I see no reason why it wouldn't work with a Marker the same way (if the marker doesn't fit, I can simply adjust it slightly). The tip of the compass attachment will also have to be replaced with something softer that wouldn't damage the screen. If you can get your hands on one of those, it's probably a good solution. Like I said, though, I don't have a reMarkable yet.
Especially as the tip wears down....do you notice any scratching of the screen? (I'm asking this at the beginning of the video...I'm sorry if you actually answer it at some point).
Jay Vansickle follow, I order rM2 and want to know it too
It does not scratch the screen at all. The tip is softer than the surface and that is why the tip wears down and needs to be replaced. It also is why it doesn't scratch the screen.
Hey,
Just wondering if the pen sounds like a mechanical pencil on paper because I was considering to get this but I have misophonia so I switched to erasable pens (Pilot Frixxion gel pens) w paper. I would appreciate with if you let me know if the writing sounds smooth like a pen on paper. Great informative video!
It is a similar sound to a mechanical pencil on paper. Not exactly the same, but similar. If you are sensitive to certain sounds, then I wouldn't recommend it, unfortunately.
Greg had previously used a special notebook from Montblanc that let your write with a real pen and paper, and it would digitally store it. I think there are other similar tools to that. That might be a better fit for you!
-Abby
Responding to this because I struggle similarly. Ever since I developed SJS I haven't been able to write with pencils. I can write with mechanical pencils if I I clench my jaw but it is unpleasant. I got my remarkable a week ago and have had no discomfort using it. I was worried about the same thing before I bought. Can't promise you'd have the same experience, but thought i'd share mine. I'd say sound is between a mechanical pencil and ultra fine tip sharpie. For whatever reason did not trigger any discomfort for me.
Thanks for the helpful information!
Very informative video. Please tell me how durable the reMarkable is. Can it take a few bumps here and there?
I'd say it's pretty durable. Greg has a case for it and it seems to work great.
Your Remarkable 2 is different from mine which does not have buttons other than the on/off button. Nothing along the bottom.
This video was made before the Remarkable 2 was released so this is actually the original reMarkable
Gregg, your video is very informative!!! Just ordered mine and looking forward to put in practice your tips. We Dentists loves teeth and gadgets!!
Where do you practice?
Herm Perez, doctors/dentists truly love their gadgets, but if a salesman tells them it can cook a egg...they buy it! I’m appalled he uses his tablet like one big sticky note. I wish he would use the trash to text mode. I hope he’s not paying a secretary $15.00 an hour to translate his handwritten notes...
Why are you so worried about how much he would pay a secretary? This is the CEO of several companies talking about how HE uses his tablet. You use it your way and others use it their way
Excellent video. I like writting on graph paper. Does it have an option to load graph paper as the default paper type? Thanks.
Yes, there are many paper templates, including my favorite: dotted paper.
@@bentuinstra4441 oh wow, that's awesome.
How is palm detection? Can you tilt the pen?
Greg hasn't had any issues with palm detection. Yes, you can tilt the pen.
Should I buy Gen 1, or wait the long 4 months for Remarkable 2? Really want one and ASAP!
The remarkable 2 looks better beacause is twice as responsive, so technecally your twice as productive. It may be interesting.
@@nameash1891 Thank you. I did order Remarkable 2 two days ago. I'm in Batch 7 for late October.
After seeing how productive you were with this tablet, I immediately bought the 2nd Version yesterday. I just came to find out, you are incapable of reading Kindle books and such on this tablet. Is there some work around? I am hoping to use this tablet for reading as well.
I don't have too much info on that. Kindle itself is not supported but you can read Ebooks and PDF. Here is an article from reMarkable about this: support.remarkable.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002658737
@@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment thank you!
I'm only interested in how the erasing works like. That's the only point I consider buying or else I'd better off buying the cheapest Ipad. Of all the videos I saw, they all look like they never make mistakes. Does it erase like using an iPad?
Not sure how the iPad erases. On this model of ReMarkable you have to select the erase function, then you can either run the stylus across and it will erase, or you can circle a whole section and it will erase that section. The ReMarkable 2 (which is on preorder right now) has a new stylus that you can flip over and use the end as an eraser.
Why don’t you use the iPad? Could you please do a video comparison?
Greg likes the paper feel but we are thinking about doing a video comparison of this!
Just to clarify this is the gen 1 remarkable correct?
Yes. Greg has the second one ordered and did a rundown of the features of that one recently. The gen 2 is delayed and supposed to arrive in August or September
I think I can use it to organise my client's notes. However from time to time I have some other paper things relating to the client that should be inserted into their physical folder - like their test results, a referral letter that they brought along. How do I get round this?
You could scan them in and save them as PDFs.
@@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment so using email function to import into Remarkable?
Nice shirt
still quite laggy. I hope e-ink would have had much better response and refresh time in the future though
Is it possible to search handwriting notes?
If not, could you share what you do if you need find pervious conversation notes with a client? let’s client have over 40 conversations
You can't search handwritten notes. You can convert them to text, and I've heard of people then sending them to Evernote.
Greg's method is that he just has a notebook for each client, he writes the date really big at the beginning of each meeting, and then he just scrolls back if he needs to find something.
Does anyone have experience with remarkable as a tool for note taking on (academic) papers? How does it work?
Does it integrate with OneNote or Evernote? Without that its useless to anybody who is already invested in a bigger ecosystem.
Yes, you can email your notes to OneNote and Evernote.
@@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment Does this mean that it can't open a OneNote Notebook directly? What about the Online-Client at least?
1:36 if you cannot tell the difference between a worn tip and a new tip, then why would you change the tip? How do you know it's worn? Surely you change the tip when the performance starts to diminish?
The tip starts to wear down so if you don’t change it, it will eventually disappear. Kind of like a mechanical pencil.
@@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment I see, so your comment is basically saying you don't have any performance degradation until the tip has completely gone?
unfortunately for this thing, we cannot use highlighter on our writing right? :(
There is a highlighter feature. It is a light gray highlight.
Thanks for all of the tips. Can it search the handwriting.
No, it can't. It can only search the names of folders, notebooks, etc.
@@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment Doesn't it turn writing into typed text?
Just Awake, yes it does but you can’t search the writing, even if it is typed text. Maybe they will add that feature to the reMarkable 2!
Where’s Tasmania?
The tips have too be changed, that's a bit rubbish? Do all e ink tablets do that?
Thumbs up at 1:44 haha
Haha 😂 😂
I am think about getting a Remarkable, but I have some questions about the product. I really enjoy color coding all my notes and I would like to know if there is a possibility to use different color. I am an Engineering student so I have converted to just using graph paper for all notes since I am constantly drawing graphs and diagrams while taking lecture notes. I would like to know if you know Remarkable offers graph like paper instead of plain paper.
ReMarkable does have the graph paper option, but doesn't offer color coding. Everything is in grayscale.
Why do u even need this thing if there is an ipad and notability
It's just a personal preference. Writing on this feels similar to writing on paper, whereas an iPad does not.
Battery of two weeks vs few hours?
Plus this baby doesn't fu*k your eyes.

Does this man ever use the handwriting to text? As a former secretary, I can see him paying $15.00 per hour to have these notes transcribed. Not very efficient. He loses time when he has to go through a folder of hen scratch. Do tell me though, is there a lag time between handwriting and clean text? Is there a special feature that denotes: change from this to that. And, one can re-enter former text and add extra handwritten notes? This may be presumptive, but I’m coming closer to making an in investment.
He uses the tablet how it works for him. He's reading his own notes he doesn't need to pay a secretary to do it for him
@@MatterhornBusinessDevelopment, Granted. I hope that he can cut out special points, place it on a new sheet and have his handwriting formatted into legible text. That really is the point of the matter. If he has that capability, then he definitely does not need a secretary! I've been a medical transcriptionist, secretary and trauma scribe. I'm quite curious as to what this tablet can do. It could radially change the way medicine is practiced! Back in the '70's I worked with an ER physician getting an Apple up to speed for orders and such. Today leaves me breathless at what that pokey old thing can do, it definitely grew up! Best to you all, Anne
well. it is nice but so overpriced.. you can buy a tablet or an ipad with every other funcrion other than notes... you can download some note app
You definitely could get an iPad instead. It's just a matter of preference. Greg is old school and likes that this feels like you are writing on paper.
