Alternative Zippo Fuel tests

  • Testing alternative fuels for Zippo style lighters rather than the usual "lighter fluid" liquid fuel.
    Many places online claim that Mentholated spirits, colognes/perfume and rubbing alcohol are good alternatives to liquid lighter fuel.
    In this video I put those to the test with a Star lighter, a Zippo windproof lighter and an IMCO Junior lighter.

    It’s not watered down. It’s hydrotreated. Which means that during refining, it was heated up under pressure in the absence of oxygen, then hydrogen gas was added, breaking the ringed hydrocarbons like benzene, toluene, xylene, etc. Those are known as VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and also as aromatics. They are what makes petroleum smell bad. They are also all known carcinogens, which is why the producers hydrotreat lighter fluid. They don’t want you getting cancer from the lighter fluid while you’re getting cancer from tobacco.

    the zippo was not burning in the beiginning as the methylated alchool has a higher ignition point than the lighter fuel or the old spice. When u put the old spice in it burned which made heat and burned the methyl alchool, creating that smmi transparant flame.

    I think Naptha and Everclear are the best lighter fluid alternatives. Naptha is really similar to lighter fluid if you can find it for a discount. And Everclear is just handy for many things, whether you want to drink it, clean with it, or use it as a fuel it will not disappoint you in a survival situation. Otherwise use Zippo or Ronsonol, either is good.

    Methanol is also toxic through inhalation and skin contact. You can go blind really easily. Luckily enough, most "methylated" spirits don't contain methanol in XXI century, but the one you have actually does. The flame was nearly colourless, which is a characteristic sign that it contains methanol. I tried using acetone as a fuel and it works well enough.

    • @dirtyaznstyle4156
      @dirtyaznstyle4156 2 года назад +1

      Inhalation of vapors or combustion when the AFR is rich. It’s really not more toxic than gasoline though, it’s less volatile and the exposure limit for methanol is a bit higher than gasoline. It also burns cleaner than gasoline and when the ratio is rich it produces aldehydes. But better than inhaling straight piped exhaust from a gasoline engine. This is all known from methanol being choice fuel for top alcohol dragsters and the cut for the nitro in top fuel.

    One tip I heard of but have never tried myself, is to use the oil/syntetic petro mixesl that you can get for small 2-stroke engines, chainsaws etc (with 2-3% oil). The syntetic fules gives less smell and a clean burn and the oil probably gives a bit of calmer burn. Might be worth testing.

    "Naptha" is probably the best alternative for the cost
    "Colman white gas" is also a good alternative.
    My issue is that there has been little in the way of cold tests with said fuels.

    I would just use the Zippo lighter fluid it's not that expensive. Hydrotreated Light Naphtha is the main solvent in zippo lighter fluid, about 30%, I'm not sure what the other 70% is. the MSD sheet says it's Light Hydrotreated Distillate. TSCA Definition 2019: A complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained by the distillation of products from the light distillate hydrotreating process. It consists of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly in the range of C6 through C9 and boiling in the range of approximately 3.degree.C to 194.degree.C (37.degree.F to 382.degree.F).

    Petroleum ether would be nice, but it is extremely volitile which means:
    -you will loose the fuel quickly
    -it is extrmely dangerous.
    Petroleum is toxic, but in its "out of the gas station pump" form it is impure which limits its evaporation rate, but after distillation to get the low-boiling part (pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, nonane and their isomers) it becomes extrmely volitile, which makes it a lot easier to get poisoned.
