A piece of trivia on this movie: Lisa Eilbacher who plays Eddie Murphy's friend in this movie as Jenny, just two years earlier played Casey Seeger in the movie 'An Officer and a Gentleman.' Being a big fan of the earlier movie, and from that age group, I guess I had the hots for Lisa (in addition to being hot for Debra Winger of course, who I first saw as a teenager playing Wonder Woman's younger sister in that TV series). I'm a guy, what do you expect 😉

Making the music your low key MVP was a great choice.
To me, this is the top performance that I've ever seen from Eddie Murphy.
This movie has a great blend of comedy, action and drama, and it does a great job of putting it all together.
I also think that this is all you need to see from this series. The sequels do not come close to being as good as this. However, it's your call.

The banana in the tailpipe works because an engine is essentially an air pump. Air and fuel go in, get compressed and ignited, and then is pumped out. The banana blocks the only exit to the system, so all of the burned gases get trapped, which eventually backs up into the engine itself and chokes combustion. The banana basically choked the engine to death.

Have to admire the technology that the Beverly Hills PD had in 1984 in this movie, considering there was no GPS or Internet back then. That means that to locate those officers' vehicles each one must have had a radio transmitter, and the police had enough radio receivers around the city to triangulate exactly where each car is. Then they had their own computer database - with 1984 computer technology, no less! - that had the addresses and their residents of the entire city of Beverly Hills. The size of the servers to hold that much info with early 1980s computer technology must have been huge. I mean, I know Beverly Hills is full of rich taxpayers, but that's kinda crazy.

The employee who gives Eddie Murphy those two bananas was played by Damon Wayans; this was actually his first film role.
"Serj" was played by Bronson Pinchot, who at the time was known for co-starring in a hit television sitcom called Perfect Strangers. His "schtick" as an actor was playing supporting roles, mostly comedic, and mostly involving the use of a strong accent (but never the same accent). He is best remembered as one of the two lead actors on the sitcom, Perfect Strangers. I loved that show so much.
Pinchot played a naive, good-hearted but strange character named Balki Bartokomous, a farmer and sheep-herder from the fictional Mediterranean island of Mepos. He moves into the apartment of his cynical but overall good-hearted cousin Larry Appleton (Mark Linn-Baker) in Chicago and learns about the ways of American life, etc. Lots of comedy, lots of heart. Bronson Pinchot says he based the accent on an Israeli makeup woman, but a director friend who knew him at Yale said Pinchot's been doing "Serge" forever. He would purposely alter the vowel sounds in people's names. He created a language and a way of thinking for himself. He was just a very creative individual and essentially created his own accent. I'd bet anything that the scenes with Serge and Axel bouncing off each other in the store were improvised.

Notice the weirdness of Axel and his friends. I cannot see those three people knowing each other. Not least because Eddie is younger than the other two. It woukd probably have made more sense with the original casting (Stallone) but would have made for a far worse film. See: Cobra, the Stallone picture that rose from the ashes of the early Beverly Hills Cop. Or better, don't!

It was always that tune because it's easy to figure out key by key and sounded so cool, with the organ in the right key it sounded just like the synth sound in the movie. This movie has a hell of a history. The studio didn't want Eddie Murphy, so they got Stallone to replace Eddie. Stallone rewrote the movie and not only ramped up the action but he used the book Fair Game as inspiration for his script. WHen the studio projected Stallone's version to go way over budget, The producer and Martin Brest convinced the studio to rehire Eddie as it would be cheaper to make the original movie instead. Which is what happened and that's we got this version of Beverly Hills Cop.
Side note: A few years later Stallone retooled his script to Beverly Hills Cop which ended up being the movie Cobra. A definte watch for just how ridicolous and awesome the movie is.
Side Side note: The author of the book Fair Game sued Stallone and got to make a movie out of her book too called, Fair Game starring William Baldwin and CIndy Crawford. It's utterly forgettable compared to BHC and Cobra.

The actor who played Serge was Bronson Pinchot who later had success on tv in a sitcom called 'Perfect Strangers' about two cousins one American played by Mark Linn Baker and one from a European country played by Pinchot in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He is an American, but seems to play weird characters with weird accents...like Serge and Bialki from 'Perfect Strangers'.
Billy was played by Judge Reinhold who co-starred in one of the best high school comedies ever made, 'Fast Times At Ridgemont High' with Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh. Phoebe Cates, and Forest Whitaker. He has one legendary scene with Phoebe Cates...and that's all I will say. Another film with an AMAZING soundtrack, and based on the novel by Cameron Crowe who adapted the screenplay (and later became an Oscar winner starting his Hollywood career).
Jenny was played Lisa Eilbacher, one of the 1980s most unsung actresses who made a splash in a few big films but just kinda retired. Another great film she was in was 'An Officer and A Gentleman' with Richard Gere and Louis Gossett, Jr., about Naval Flight School recruits.
This was one of the major films produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, who had a rock solid track record in the 1980s and into the 90s until Simpson's untimely death. Others were 'Flashdance', 'Top Gun', 'Days of Thunder', 'Crimson Tide', 'Dangerous Minds', and 'The Rock'...all worthwhile watches!!! They were known for the amazing soundtracks for their films.
The villain Victor Maitland was played by British actor Steven Berkoff. He mainly did stage work, but every film performance I have ever seen has been a masterclass in subtlety and intensity, villain or good guy...mainly villains.
When Axel checks out of the hotel, and Billy and Taggart settle the bill...the actor working the front desk is the film's director Martin Breast. Another GREAT film you should see by this director is 'Scent of a Woman' which FINALLY won Al Pacino the Academy Award for Best Actor after many nominations and losses.
Oh...and Axel's boss in Detroit, Inspector Todd, was actually a real Detroit cop named Gil Hill...the only acting work he did was in the three 'Beverly Hill Cop' movies. BH 2 is worthwhile, but BH 3....ummmm....not so much!

If you enjoyed this, Martin Brest also directed another (lesser known) comedy-action movie called Midnight Run. I've been trying to get reactors to react to this for years, but no one ever does it. Lol. It's git Robert Deniro and Charles Grodin in it. It also stars John Ashton (who plays Taggert in this movie), and a great score from Danny Elfman. It's a totally fun road-trip movie and well worth the watch. :)

A major reaction youtuber finally does this movie, and it was AMAZING. Good job, Jen. Yes, the song that you asked if it was made for the movie - it was. It's called Axel F. So many good songs, so many good scenes and lines. I am in the minority most likely, but this is the best Eddie Murphy movie (second was the animated Mulan :))
    Great job. Thanks so much.

Eddie Murphy in his first lead role and also producer.
He became a certified superstar and BHC was the No.1 film of 1984,.dethroning Ghostbusters.
Among several awards including a Grammy-winning soundtrack and an Oscar-nominated screenplay.
The score was by Harold Faltermeyer and he created the infamous 'Axel F' theme.
    Part 2 (1987) was phenomenal.
Part 3 (1993) was too wacky and not so good.
Part 4 is suppose to happen real soon.

It's been so long since I've seen this movie, I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Foley, Rosewood, and Taggart make a great team.
You were wise to talk over Rosewood when he was talking about the ending of _Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid._ That's the best western movie of all time and you wouldn't want it spoiled for you.
I'm sorry I missed the premiere but somebody put a banana in my tailpipe.

It was a box office and critical success making $390 million dollars against a $15 million dollar budget.
It was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 1985 Academy Awards.
It was originally going to star Sylvester Stallone as the lead, but had a falling out with the writers as he wanted it to be more action packed and serious rather than a comedy.
He would turn his version of Beverly Hills Cop into COBRA.

There was quite a lotta improv. Naturally, Eddie Murphy was given room to work. Also, Bronson Pinchot was totally responsible for Serge and the whole bumbling duo of Billy and Taggert trying to get over the wall on Victor's property. For Eddie, one example in particular where the director went to him and said, this scene is kinda empty, do something there, and Eddie said to the valet to take care of his car cuz all this happened last time I parked here.....totally an Eddie Murphy improv line. Seeing his standup routines, it's pretty easy to see where he put his own stamp on so many insanely funny moments. It would've been a dismal flop (all due respect) if Stallone had insisted on going forward. It just wasn't that kind of movie.

The guy who played that tough Detroit police inspector really was a tough Detroit police inspector. His name was Gilbert R. Hill. He was on Detroit city council and ran (unsuccessfully) for mayor. The location crew saw him when they toured police headquarters in Detroit. They persuaded him to be in the movie and arranged for acting lessons.
The way he chewed out Axel was somewhat the way he chewed out the real police officers under his command. He said he seldom yelled or swore in real life.
The accent used by Bronson Pinchot (Serge) was kind of generic European, maybe a hint of Russian. Pinchot devised it himself. I'm pretty sure he was ad-libbing a lot of his lines.
