I love how Minecraft can be both relaxing and somewhat intense depending on play style and difficulty settings (including survival vs creative modes)
Especially when you're alone in a cave and that scary echoing music starts playing 😂
And a Hardcore player VS. Peaceful survival player
Yeah I play completely in Creative since I flipping suck at fighting mobs. And if I play on Survival it's with Peaceful mode.

10:30 The "potion" could easily be a water bottle for carrying water out of the well. Using this for transport would be a big thing for a desert nation development and would make sense to be put up on a pottery vase.
Yeah but considering every other shard and the way it potentially ties in, it isn’t impossible to rule out the bottles being either. The wither engravement is undeniable, you HAVE to go to the nether to make a wither, and wither skeletons only also spawn in nether fortresses, so it’s only fair to say they also came across blazes and therefore blaze rods. Regardless of whether the shard is water or a potion, they had to have come across the materials needed to create potions, so if could reasonably represent both.
Its called the "brewer pottery sherd" so it definitely has to do with potions.

I really like this theory but I think its more realistic if it wasn't the warden itself that emerged from the portal, but something that started the skulk infection on a smaller scale. in my mind the warden was created by the skulk after it had grown for a long while and became more powerful
The thing is in the disc u find in the city, it has a part where we hear someone running with wither sounds in the background, then a portel opening sound, and a warden streak and the sound Of the death of the wither,
So with this disc we can say the wither followed them into their hidden city, and they opened the portal to escape but then the warden came. And killed this one greatest enemy, and that is where this civilisation ended.
My theory is that the cities were constructed not too long after the colonization of the nether and they were finding new dimensions. They opened this one and were attacked by the warden, escaped and closed the portal. They also might have erased how they opened it considering your player doesn’t know how to open it. The skulk got out too and they adapted their city to better fit the new threat with the redstone experiments to better understand the skulk and the usage of it in the towers. Plus the wool does seem out of place in some areas. The skulk served as a great exp source for their expanding magic, but they still eventually were devoured by the skulk and the cities abandoned. Later the pillager scouts found the city and were killed, hence the pillager-styled dark oak bridges that repair some old bridges and the tent or two, along with the dark oak towers.
there are patches of skulk that have no ancient cities.
both theories make sense to me

One of my theories of Minecraft is that there was not just a broad, secretive storyline we have to discover, there is a more linear path. Looking into the disc 11, it themes a singular man mining and running from a creeper. Again in disc 5, we see a single man being followed up by an army, and since we already know 5 is a conglomerate of other discs, then we know that one of the shards of the disc making it were recorded by a single person. There is a specific ancient builder that the Minecraft world is following, a certain someone I theorize to be the man who destroyed the entirety of civilization, I wonder who, perhaps the solo player we see fighting off the piglins in Legends, or the man who many believe to have led a civ to creating the wither, or perhaps the one who lights the portal in disc 5. There is something deeper going on than just the story of the old world, this is the story of the end of it, and who caused it.

Oh yeah, that might be interesting, heřøþŕįņə
oh god it might just be an endless loop for that one(?) poor player(s) that got summoned by hosts

sorry @@minestar2247, herobrine quitted his job and planning to leave internet for his sanity
5... 11... 13? Its like someones keeping track of recordings is it not? Could there be a timeline here we yet to discover?
Matpat mentions the books and how there are documenters in the world of minecraft that seem to be around before our player but after the ancient builders have vanished.
Could 5 have been the ancient builders while 11 and 13 are a documentor?
Remember thats just a theory, A mini-theory.
Its possible that the disc maker figure may have been a merchant or explorer, or maybe the disc maker was another survivor or an archivist. I was going to say that it would make sense seeing discs are a relatively new invention but then the Trail Ruins kinda mess dating for Trail Ruins are where can find the new Relic Disc so Music Discs have existed since the Trail Ruin days.
Is it possible that the sand peiple (the ones who went to the nether for potions) went to the end also since in The End City you see a boat that's literally floating and inside it, what do you have? A brewing stand with potions!
I think it might be more plausible that a mix match of different builder from different civilizations escaped to the end and pooled their resources to survive. Therefore ships (from a seafaring civilization) and things like potion brewing stands (seen in desert civilizations).
We will miss you matpat thank you for making my childhood better😊
Not sure why, but this theory especially near the end of the video sent a shiver down my spine. Love the lore that Mat is building for Minecraft.
The eyes can spell...
with more and more of the story becoming less vague, I can't help but wonder if Mojang is planning something serious. I don't know if I'd say they're going to reveal everything or anything like that, but I think something big is going to happen.
@@SirPogsalotCreates No yeah I agree. Ever since they revealed the nether update, I feel like they wanted to expand on their story on why certain creatures exist, why the nether and the end is accessible, and why certain abandoned structures are there. Hey Mat, I have an idea for a theory video. So recently i've been playing ace attorney justice for all and on the 2nd case you meet this girl called pearl. She is a little girl does not know much about the world outside of her village. During part of the game she helps you learn to pry secrets open using magic. After that your about to leave the village when she wishes you luck and says she's going to stay at the village. The next day as your getting ready for the trial, she appears saying she RAN to the courthouse from her village. Her village is 2 hours by train and she RAN. Not only that she says she found her way there by map, but she is a little girl how can she figure out where the courthouse assuming the courthouse is in the middle of the city.
That’s interesting… An ancient pottery shard is literally called a sherd… Such an interesting word, though my phone recognizes it, it wants to correct me. I’m kinda curious where some things get their names… Some things have basic names, some strange, some interesting, some possibly not fitting… This is definitely one of the interesting ones.
One small but interesting thing I’ve noticed is that Wither skeletons and Endermen are both taller than the player, suggesting they may have been related.
but Enderman are way taller and Wither skeletons are only slightly taller so that doesn't make any sense
@@cuddlecakes7153 The enderman through evolution grew taller while wither skeles are us just like how irl we have tall and short humans
@@lorddelta10maybe the wither skeleton is from the body of an individual during the period of evolution, they were already getting taller, and perhaps the chorus fruit has mutagenic properties that accelerated their evolution by exasperating common traits, giving us the freakishly tall endermen, but only slightly taller either skeletons.
There are two possibilities.
1. We downsized, compressed, became shorter.
2. They warped and became elongated.
@@yayeet1739enderman are 3 blocks tall, wither skeletons are 2 and a half
I was with this theory up until Mat said that the Warden came from the "portal."
Considering the applications of Skulk and it's connection to redstone, plus the understanding that the denizens of the Ancient City seem to possess about how it operates (wool paths), strongly suggested that Skulk, and by proxy, the Warden, are a manmade defense. Wifies & Xatrix further outline this in their theory videos.
Now that isn't to say that it isn't completely true or false, the material for the Skulk could've been acquired on the other side and used as a defense, but the Echo Shards & Catalyst would suggest against the possibility due to their implications towards soul magic.
As much as I feel this can make sense, I just feel there are a few things that you never mentioned support mats theory.
1. No other choice
When you mention the sulk being used as a defense system it makes sense with the affects
-mobs can’t spawn in city’s
-a défense system créature that only used sound and smell(which makes sense because caves are normally darker and can echo sound better because it’s enclosed)
Now what I about mats theory is that the builders that went underground just didn’t have any other choice then to stay, (assuming some of them survived the initial warden attack) because the whither is certain death they may have found it better to try and adapt and use the benefits of the sulks extraordinary defense.
Now this is a bit contradicted by the fact the stronghold is underground, who’s to say they didn’t run from there underground city and construct the stronghold, a place so secure that the warden or sulk would never get them. Where they then had the chance to perfect there portal, and go into the end.
The eyes can spell....
I have heard a different theory that makes a lot of sense to me. It looks like illagers found the ancient cities before we did and were the ones to place wool and wood in the ancient cities. It does look like 2 different build styles kinda stuck together.
Yappin
Why. Skulk barely have connection with redstone
i have always believed that the shattered terrain is from the wither. with the savannah being one of the first shattered biomes, i think it ties in realll nice
Knowing how to make the wither, the builders were ready to make a beacon. That's why the upstairs is the perfect size to make a maxed out beacon. The precious materials that go underneath were likely stolen, leaving only the treasure they buried beneath to be found by the player
I wouldn't be so fast to say the warden only brought more pain, it protected them from the wither, and the wool paths plus the redstone alarm bells and everything indicates a symbiotic relationship.
Incredibly interesting. We've always thought of the ancient builders as one mega-civilization, but that would be confusing since we know some of them got trapped in the End, some of them fell to the zombie plague, and some of them went down to build the ancient cities. This update clears that up.
This also explains why there are different types of villages
I think that the trail ruins have some connection to the villagers. You can find grindstones, Smithing tables, cartography tables, stone cutters etc. I'm just saying that all these blocks have designated villager professions.
Anyone else want/need a chronological recap (maybe even a few hours long if need be) of all the Minecraft theroies? And I don't mean the videos in chronological order, but the lore. As we learn new things, we are also learning the past. So it kinda all gets mushed together. And I'd be very curious to see how certain things work together. For example, how does the Ancient Builders die and end up as zombies, skeletons, drowned, husks, AND the allay. And what about zombies specifically? They originate from both pillager experiments and from a desease that causes piglins to turn into zombiefied versions. These are a few examples that come to mind.
There have been sooooooo many vidoes and learning both the far past and the recent past get mixed up. I also feel like it'd be a great recap just in general. Anyone else intrested?
Pretty impressive that he manages to keep me weirdly entertained with this, though I feel like I need an annual recap or something I'm losing track

Yeah they should make a yearly updated supercut
Cool note: Mojang has released a ‘Biome Settlers’ skin pack for Education and Bedrock Edition. One of the desert settlers is called the desert brewer.

No I think that’s just you
I like the intros.
If the desert civilization was the one to crate wither
It becomes even more interesting, that you can perfectly fit a fully charged beacon in the upper room of the pyramid
You mean inside the Upper Room of the temple? Not on top.
makes sense that the beacon would be gone too, after all lots of old relics with gold or valuable pieces were found by archeologists with all the valuable parts gone
You always make it easy to understand! Thank you.
I would also like to request a video on some SIMS 4 lore! They just started adding lore to the Sims live streams. Some theories can definitely be made. :)
Another point why the desert was the first to go to the nether is because of the ruined portals being almost fully buried in deserts rather than in other biomes where they spawn mostly above ground
Would like to point out matpat’s probably right about the trail ruins part for one very key reason, I restored one just to see what it could have looked like and one of the things that was part of the structure itself was what appeared to be a blue portal made of light blue glazed terracotta, almost like the ones the hosts used in Minecraft legends. Just food for thought
Restored the same structure myself. Didn't think of it as a portal, just some piece of art. Your take is interesting, though. Maybe restoring other structures will reveal more.
The eyes can spell
I think the trail ruins are the destroyed versions of the villages from Minecraft legends because the structures are similar with the random glazed colored blocks.
10:22 gotta love the picture selected for this part of the video, the desert well, the structure made for the player to be able to collect water in the desert.
at the side of a lake...
Lol i didn’t notice it like that 😂😂
No I believe that Withers used to be native to the nether until they were hunted to extinction which is why they need to be summoned but the constant wither fights warranted them building these giant fortresses but it also weakened the ancient builders for the final knockout which is the warden and the skulk which could be a type of fungus I suspect this gave them some type of illness that starts with the blindness
Taken for their hubris, looking to expand upon what they don't know, exploring the rifts created in both life and world and left to wither away as these monsters of daily life take over, while the weakest ones escape from their worlds and the strongest remain unknown we're only left to wander as we come to in this strange overlap.

Matpat. There is one thing I would ask you to explore and it’s the warden pottery sherds name “mourner” this could mean something very important when it relates to the more modern ancient cities.
I don’t know if anyone else has heard this, but some of the Warden’s growls sound sad, as if it doesn’t want to hunt things.
he did explain it however didnt go in depth enough with how it could relate to the city.
@@HungryWarden I was just thinking that after watching. They call it the mourner, we know it has souls in it's heart, We know the Skulk absorbs the souls of those it kills, we know the warden comes out of the skulk when summoned. It is also humanoid or at least shares an appearance/animation set with Iron golems.
The warden is those who have died. Those who experimented with souls absorbed into the worst of their creations and tormented for it.
Additional theory - The Endermen possibly being those who witnessed this tragedy, used what they could find in the skulk biome and escaped. It would explain how the end portal has white with *green/blue* hues with the portal itself having brighter specs inside like the skulk blocks do. The End portal uses technology created after visiting the skulk dimension and witnessing things teleport through it like the way the warden gets summoned.
@@BiohazardPsycho The Skulk is the true horror of the Deep Dark. The Warden is just an agent created by the Skulk using the tormented souls of the fallen. With how scary the Warden is, it's terrifying to imagine that there must be much worst lurking in the home dimension of the Skulk. The Warden isn't what came out of that portal. Something else did, and now those that died to it are used to create Wardens to defend the Skulk. We can only be grateful that the portals somehow closed and didn't make the outbreaks worse.
I need more of this, I need more Minecraft LORE like make a huge video of putting it all together from the Dawn of Minecraft’s creation to where it’s at now

Surely they could just make the blaze powder for the potions. Amazing video but I have a quick lore question for dedicated theorists or even MatPat if he sees this.
The ancient builders are theorized to have evolved into endermen after being trapped in the end with nothing to eat but chorus fruit right? This is what grants them the ability to teleport. I’m curious, how did the endermen eventually escape?
We see them in not just the end but the overworld and nether and if they were still trapped in the end then that would be the only place where they could be found right? The ones in other dimensions couldn’t have evolved into endermen without the fruit so they must have found a way to get back to the overworld and nether right? How?
Is it their ability to teleport? Did they manage to make a portal? How did they do it? Is it powered by dragon blood or something since the only way we can leave is after killing the ender dragon?
I’m not sure if this question has already been answered in this series but if it has or someone has a theory I would like to know please.
Probably their ability to teleport ending up teleporting them to other dimensions.
Maybe they changed themselves into Endermen on purpose in order to teleport out, but lost their minds in the process. The only thing that remained was the urge to leave for the overworld, and desire to build, hence picking up blocks.
that theory has fallen beacuse of minecraft legends in one of the cinematics there are endermen in the backround even the heart of ender is in posesion of the sheer
@@mistakenfate4044 Well maybe the ancient builders all died BEFORE Legends, and actually, that would explain a lot of things : since in Legends the world is at peace, it likely helped the Builders develop very quickly. Then the Piglins attacked, why? Because the overworld dwellers worshipped the Wither, and the 3 gods could have intervened for that same reason, to bring their cult back to life by saving the world.
Edit: also note how the zombies and skeletons are undead and friendly to the villagers, just like if the villagers worshipping the Wither, god of the undead, made those same undead help them back...
You know how you return to the overworld when you "die" after falling into the void? What if they didn't die?
I have 2 suggestions, Flee the Facility, which has a hidden room with papers of lore and now maps (I attempted figuring out the lore, but I didn't get very far), or Break In (1 or 2), that has a lot of lore in it too (it was just released).
We will be Missing you

Distance is a game that definatly deserves a video on this channel the lore is really cool. it's a really underrated arcade racing game with platfroming, it's probably one of my favorite indie games now :)
My theory for Minecraft Steve is that after when the ancient builders were attacked by the warden, Steve said enough and headed back up to the surface to make his own life.
I love archaeology (but more on paleontology), and man, I wish my potato PC could handle not only the update, but also downloading Minecraft
MatPat is like that one uncle at the family reunion who tells you about all the crazy stuff he's done and no one actually knows if any of them are actually true.
doesn't the portal in the ancient city kinda resemble Action, one of the three hosts? maybe it was a last call for help to the hosts after they summoned the wither
To me it just looks like the Warden, probably it was first seen as a god before it backfired
Wait you're kinda right... I always found it weird that it looked like a head but didn't look like the warden
Also notice how the mourner sherd is only found in cold oceans, the pirate civilisation somehow knew about the Warden before all others, or maybe they were the first to witness and survive to it...
please theorize about Ghasts, Monster Spawners and Blazes next (Blazes are interesting, as they cannot really be found naturally outside the nether fortresses, they must have to do with the ancient builders)
Now that mat pat has announced his retirement from gt, this means that sadly thid is probably his very last minecraft lore video 😢
What about a theory of the armor trims? I think their designs say a lot about the history of the ancient builders and their connections to the Illagers.
Matpat is the only person that Can make me believe that a grape started WW2
It probably will start WW3...
Same me too lol
Well yeah, that's literally the first thing you learn in WWII history, a grape started all of it, no need for MatPat
I want more Minecraft theories! This is my favorite series and I often rewatch videos
i love how i just learnt human evolution at school and this is just so cool and i know that matpat has put a lot of effort in reseaching and studying this theory

There’s no doubt Matpat and his crew are onto something, but The Sniffer, and the huge fossils that we find that have a similar look to them, and the eggs that we find in the underwater ruins still remain a mystery (even though pretty much everyone hates The Sniffer, and I don’t blame them)
I even made a theory video myself about it, as well as other RUclipsrs.
I actually quite like the Sniffer, although I was more of a Rascal fan myself.
I like the sniffer
I actually love the sniffer it is so cute and shaggy and gives us cool plants what's not to like
who hates the sniffer?
I don't hate the sniffer, and I don't know anyone who does.
When I first experience the deep dark, I immediately thought of this:
What if the skuclk is one entity that is trying to defend itself, or whats behind the portal. It defends itself through the wardens, which are specifically engineered to be optimal in the environment of the deep dark (doesn't need vision, lots of health, lots of damage, and extreme sense such as hearing, etc, and blinding the supposed attacker).
Juist something to think about, give me ur opinions

It feels so weird to see a MatPat Minecraft theory since I just got back into Minecraft
I actually really like these theorys, and kinda implemented a bit of it into my own theory! And it's actually really fun to theorize lol!
I'm in complete awe of this. I read a book with a similar message, and it was astonishing. "Game Theory and the Pursuit of Algorithmic Fairness" by Jack Frostwell
Im going to miss episodes like this, but still its nice knowing mathew will finnaly get the break he deserves.
I really wanna keep digging into the lore it’s so mysterious yet so exciting
If I could just get my dad into stuff like this, I think he would love all the lore that you've been finding. He's a HUGE fan of archeology!
Hey Matpat. I was wondering if you could make a theory about the lore of Changed! If you do so, i hope you’ll have fun uncovering the truth behind this strange game!
In the new 1.21 update a new hostile mob named the breeze will spawn in the trial chambers. It seems to move quickly and have some level of flight. It’s attack sends a projectile that explodes upon impact. Finally it looks a bit like a blaze or (in my opinion) a wither. I think given that it spawns in a structure that is likely to be man made, that structure having the word trial in its name, and these characteristics, I think it could of been used for the early development of the whither by the ancient builders….
So lore!
