It’s not a joke: Venice really is sinking very slowly. They have been working against it for the last 10-20 years. (By the way, it's 'Dorsoduro' (hard back) and not 'Dorsudoro' (something like 'golden bakc'). Great video!
I took my GR1 to Venice (and Rome and Florence) 20 years ago and had a blast shooting with it. Of course, there weren't really any digital cameras readily available then, so I didn't really know any better. I now have two GR1s(one silver and one black) and love them both!
Kai's stuff was much better at digitalrev. There was no Kai circlejerk back then and he had a team, this all meant he was less full of himself and actually looked like he was having fun.
In the description you said: "Filmed with: Sony a7 III Body Only." So you tried to minimising the potential loss by filming it with body only without any lens? hahaha just a joke
My favorite compact camera is the Pentax Q7. There really is nothing else like it. It's not a film camera though. I don't think you gave the Q system a fair shake when you were at DRTV.
You, Lok, and Alamby were the key to Digital Rev's success. Losing you was the end of them. Love the personality, quality of footage, and efficient presentation of information.
The GR** was my favourite compact camera. The shutter died on me, RIP Ricoh GR1s. I switched to a Contax T2 but the Ricoh is better because of its weight and size (it fits on a pocket!). Nice photos and video KAI! we need more film-related reviews, those ebay prices aren't going to rise by themselves LOL ... I think I smell a F100 review... time to invest in one RIGHT NOW ;)
Kai, I live in Padua, near Venice, and I visited it so many times (for school and work, because of course shootings there are amazing) that I feel it like a second home. It's really touching seeing you there and actually showing the problems of the city, like cruisers (which there were protests but at the end cruise companies won) that are ruining image and the mud covering Venice pillars (without mud, pillars can start the rottening process), also the toxic water, tourist congestions,... At least, for the last problem, nowadays Venice is heavily controlled during events. The police even control the number of cellfones in different areas so they know how many people are there, so in case they can create one way roads in case there will be too many tourists (2018 nye was ready in case, like this). Who knows Venice at least know where to move, where to go to eat and save money, where there are good places to visit not mainstream, and sure how to enjoy it. I love your videos shot in Venice Kai, do some others. If you want, maybe you can join me when I'm going there to get some photos with models ahah
10:20 omg you were so lucky with that low number of tourists. I've never been there without tourists, and everytime it was hell shooting with a model. Tourists pass in front of you so many times
A fun post Kai and sometimes "less is more" when it comes to kit. Everytime someone launches another camera upgrade it always comes with lots of "extra" bells and whistles and I often wonder why, I guess it is a "marketing thing" rather than a "photographer" one.
Oh, Venice...I always love to go there... Always wonder why they don't sell a film compact again, there's so much request it would fly off the shops in some weeks!
I have the GR1v because I wanted the upgraded lens and the ability to set the ISO manually but any of these GR1 series cameras really are great, I think they are as close to perfection as you can get for a compact camera that does everything you could want and small enough to slip in your pocket. The Contax T3 comes close but is more boxy so is harder to slip in your pocket. It's a shame these are so flakey - the top LCD on mine is dead but the viewfinder is still going strong so I can keep shooting for now. This is my third one that has failed - I really wish Ricoh would bring it back for one last time :)
I think we'll see a small full frame digital camera in a GR2 sized body in the near future as technology accelerates forward. For now, I use an EOS M10 + EF-M 22mm lens as my fixed focal length walk-around camera or as a second camera to use for low light shots at events.
Nice video, interesting location! I really like the colours of this video, they look different to usual. Are they natural A7 III colours, or if not can you share the name of the LUT you used, like you are sharing the other filming information in your description? Thanks.
Film really has a certain quality that's so hard to emulate when it comes to digital photography. I've been holding back trying it out but it seems like the result makes all the work so much worth it. Great review!
I feel like Kai embodies a form of Jeremy Clarkson and Anthony Bourdain, but in the photo/video world. I love it!!
He definitely has watched a lot of top gear.
I was thinking a mix of jeremy clarkson and maurice moss
"why Venice? why not, might as well visit it before it sinks right?"
-Kai, absolute mad lad
It’s not a joke: Venice really is sinking very slowly. They have been working against it for the last 10-20 years. (By the way, it's 'Dorsoduro' (hard back) and not 'Dorsudoro' (something like 'golden bakc'). Great video!
Niccolò Bianchi so when it will going to sink? To make sure I can visit it before its demise
Kos 291 it's not like there's an expiration date 😅 (I get the irony)
depends on the progress of global warming
Same with the GR1 - use it before it dies inevitably
WE NEED MORE FILM CAMERAS ON THIS CHANNEL! PLSSSS
I took my GR1 to Venice (and Rome and Florence) 20 years ago and had a blast shooting with it. Of course, there weren't really any digital cameras readily available then, so I didn't really know any better. I now have two GR1s(one silver and one black) and love them both!
I don't even care about this review, I'm only here because you're so damn funny!
I do look young but I'm definitely older than 8 years old
Ditto! Kai could be doing a review of a new mouse trap and I’d still watch it.
He's art himself...pleasure to watch
Yea, If this photography thing doesn't work out Kia has a career in stand-up comedy waiting to be claimed.
Kai's stuff was much better at digitalrev. There was no Kai circlejerk back then and he had a team, this all meant he was less full of himself and actually looked like he was having fun.
More we need more !!!!! I love your unique way of showing cameras with a down to earth flare
Love these older camera breakdowns. I used to love the analog rev episodes on digital rev and this kind throws back to that a little.
Breathtaking pictures!
It was nerve wracking watching Kai casually carrying it around no strap next to a canal
It was only a little over 100 quid. I was carrying a Sony a7 III in the other hand without a strap though.
Same, i was just going to post that before i saw your comment!
Even more! none of the cameras fell on the ground or in water!
In the description you said:
"Filmed with:
Sony a7 III Body Only."
So you tried to minimising the potential loss by filming it with body only without any lens? hahaha just a joke
Kai W where do you get it for 100 quid? All I can find asked for 1000 or more.
MORE FILM PLEASE
My favorite compact camera is the Pentax Q7. There really is nothing else like it. It's not a film camera though. I don't think you gave the Q system a fair shake when you were at DRTV.
Oh man, Kai W and DPreview are my favorite channels on YT.
Venezia+Kai+Film on a Saturday Morning awsome!.
Kai's photography has gotten loads better ever since those DigitalRev days! Bravo!
You, Lok, and Alamby were the key to Digital Rev's success. Losing you was the end of them. Love the personality, quality of footage, and efficient presentation of information.
GR1 is legendary. Such a fantastic camera.
Digging the combo camera review/travel advice - 10/10 would watch another.
I freaking love this camera probably one of my favorite cameras I've owned!!! Also more of these kinds of videos please!!!!!!
It feels like i'm watching a BBC doc, I LOVE YOU LOL
The reflexes on that kid dodging the bird.
That’s Matrix-level right there.
Really awesome episode, Kai. I’d love to see more 35mm compact reviews!
Glad to see an addition to this series! Cannot wait for more to come.
Travel and photography. Love this kind of videos. Nice work Kai.
You using 50D in GR1 which can't override the DX, how you tell the camera what I ISO you are using? Or the compensation switch??
$200???? They are like $500 now
$1000 now, haha
@@UrbexWonderland for that price, might as well get a GR III. Or if you want to shoot film, there's a ton of options for
A film camera + Kai = great AF
Excellent tour of Venice Kai! One of your best videos imo!
I love when you review film cameras!
Loved my GR1s. Had it for quite a long time but finally let it go about 3 years ago as I just wasn't shooting it often. But it deserves it's place.
Thank you, for your allways fantastic videos😊, they are a great inspiration EVERY time. Greetings from Denmark.
at last again some film :D
thanks for sharing this KAI
love your channel :D
This camera brings back so many memories. I used to sell a ton of them when I worked in a camera store in the 90s :)
I'll literally watch any video you put out.
The images that puts out are amazing.
This was a really great episode - and the photos were fantastic. One of your best. please do more!
you are only a 30 miles from my town!!!! Great!!!!Welcome in Italy my friend!!!
Kai, Glad you are amongst those who is keeping the film alive!
Kai, what do you use to take your video and what Mic? Have you got like a what's in my kit bag video lately? Thanks.
I’m pleasantly surprised there’s another video in this series since the first episode is my favorite video of his
Wow, I sub at around 10k and thought where's all of Kai fan? Been away a while and its 718k!! Well deserved Kai, keep it up!
18% neutral grey shirt.
No, his shirt is lighter than 18% grey.
Added Cinestill to my film wish list, it looks gorgeous!
Andrew Power is cinestill use film for cinema? I heard it got unique result under halogen light
Kos 291 Yeah its Kodak cine film repacked into photo canisters
Fun video! Any trouble getting your film through multiple airports/ xray scanners?
Kai I've been looking to buy a camera I can carry around with me everyday for general photography. What camera do you suggest I should buy?
The GR** was my favourite compact camera. The shutter died on me, RIP Ricoh GR1s. I switched to a Contax T2 but the Ricoh is better because of its weight and size (it fits on a pocket!). Nice photos and video KAI! we need more film-related reviews, those ebay prices aren't going to rise by themselves LOL ... I think I smell a F100 review... time to invest in one RIGHT NOW ;)
Or an Xpan review, I think I got the last reasonably priced one on Earth a last year lol
Mario Andrei Pantoja Maguiña I did love my Contact T2 ... Traded it in for the Lieca Minilux ... I think the Contax was better though 🤓.
My shutter died too
Mario Andrei Pantoja Maguiña I never heard people talking about Contax 2. What's your opinion about Contax camera?
do you know that there's a guy in Portugal that can repair your Ricoh GR1?
Once again a stellar performance Kai!
Stunning camera.
You are such a good effing photographer! Beautiful video! Thanks Kai
Kai, where did you get your lcd/foam repaired? My GR1v has the dreaded malfunctioning lcd sigh Love that little camera
More film photography. More please. That's how I discovered you on DigitalRev while searching stuff about the Canon AE1 Program. So MORE.
Those selfies turned out great!
Found a basically unused gr1v for £4.99 in a charity shop the other day and then this got uploaded. Currently putting a roll of film through it :)

I'm a simple man. I see a video by Kai, I click
Big ups for featuring a film cam.
A fun post Kai and sometimes "less is more" when it comes to kit. Everytime someone launches another camera upgrade it always comes with lots of "extra" bells and whistles and I often wonder why, I guess it is a "marketing thing" rather than a "photographer" one.
Totally. Can't get much purer than the Ricoh GR1!
What film scanner do you use Kai? I've been offered a Nikon Coolscan V from a mate.
Really love the street photography in this episode
Great shots! Always love me a nice point and shoot!
Oh, Venice...I always love to go there... Always wonder why they don't sell a film compact again, there's so much request it would fly off the shops in some weeks!
Thank you thank you thank you Kai, the film reviews are refreshing, please do more :)
I'm thinking of buying this camera and after your review I'm buying one. The only thing that confused me was your saying to shoot 800iso in daylight
What do you think of the fuji xf10? Seeing its fixed focal length and all.
Walk in Venice??? Hell yes, its the only way to see the city
Yes! As long you dont have bridgephobia , it is the way to see Venice :)
Those were some nice shots actually Kai!
I'm a big fan of your work! I also really enjoy film photography, so I'd love it if you did more of these sorts of videos.
I like travel + camera review like this, keep doing it kai! 😊
We need more of these!!!
Great video Kai 💪💪💪
One thing I noticed
3:03 & 12:33 shows the GR1S/V date
Am I Right ?
Well done, Kai! I was waiting for a new F word episode. This was a good one. Love the sharpness of the lens.
Hope you weren't waiting too long...wait, you probably were
LOL!
good stuff.. you make photography fun & exciting!.. what kinda mic do you use?
My favorite film camera. If it only werent so expensive.
g yeah more like 600-700$

I loved your tour of Venice. Greetings from Turin!
I'm watching you since the times you painted the Nikon DSLR pink! :)
Kai how do you develop your pictures ?
When kai actually take good photos
I’m a simple man. I see Kai I press Like.
Hi I was wondering if the viewfinder has a purple hue or tint to it, and if that's normal? Or if it's a LED leak?
Kai, how do you travel with film? Especially 800 iso film - must be a nightmare. Would love a video on this!!
Good stuff. Impressed with the sharpness.
Even the GRD (GR Digital 1st Generation) is fantastic with its totally flattering film-grain image quality texture.
Awesome video. Please make more like this.
omg Venice is my fav place on earth.... can't wait to go there for the 3rd time in September
What's your process for developing your film and getting it into your computer?
You actually pronounced the market name correctly, good job 👍
Thanks!
Please help. 3 sigma art lenses 16/24/35mm 1.4 or canon 16-35 2.8 mark iii? Thoughts?
I just have one quick question. Is the GR III coming this year???
Love this, Kai! More of this series!
I can't believe the woman hid behind her kid when the seagull attacked. Crazy.. Nice vid bud ;)
i'm actually using the Ricoh GR1 now! Great camera
I think we'll see a small full frame digital camera in a GR2 sized body in the near future as technology accelerates forward. For now, I use an EOS M10 + EF-M 22mm lens as my fixed focal length walk-around camera or as a second camera to use for low light shots at events.

Get a Heliopan or B+W Vario ND. They have hard stops so you won’t get the pattern and the image quality is the best.
Film really has a certain quality that's so hard to emulate when it comes to digital photography. I've been holding back trying it out but it seems like the result makes all the work so much worth it. Great review!
I'd love a Full Frame Ricoh GR :) Nice video & Thanks :)
Please bring back the F word! People are still crazy about film.
Kai, what a wonderful entertaining video!
Finally Kai!! Finally uploaded a new video.....
Have been waiting for quite sometime ...
Did you scan the negatives in order to get the images in the video, or did you make prints and scan those?
I was lazy and got the lab to do high-res scans for me
That's always a good strategy
SharkEatsYou Interesting ... What was the resolution of the scans? I want to take my film camera out but I don't trust the labs to do a good job.
great vid! sadly we'll have to wait another year for a f word episode😧😂
