I have 3 film GRs (GR1, GR1v, and GR21) and a GR IIIx. By far, GR21 is my favorite. One and only 21mm premium compact camera. I bought it 20 years ago and still going strong. BTW, there is still a repair shop available for GR series. Namely those in Taiwan are quite good and repair pretty much anything including replacing a LCD board.
How do these GR21 cameras hold up? Do they also suffer from the “and then it died” issues the regular GR cameras suffer from? I’ve had both a GR1 and GR1s die for apparently no reason. I’d really be sad if this 21 suffers the same issues…
you should think about a similar series doing the history of some famous film stocks. guess a bit difficult as many are discontinued but sure some of your viewers could send you bits and pieces
Love the production quality on these videos. They have gotten so much better. You've found a good flow for these. I look out for these often and am excited to see your really pushing these out now. Always wanted a 'regular' GR, this 21 model has always intrigued me as well.
Superb camera with an amazing lens, but sadly like the Contax T series you face electronic failure. The same lens in LTM or M Mount however can be teamed up with a Barnack style Leica, or a high qualityJapanese clone such as the Leitax or Nicca for a tiny street shooting monster. But for half the price you could pick up the Soviet era Russar mp-2 20mm F/5.6 or the modern Lomo version and Soviet camera such as a FED or a Zorki. BTW nice to see some of your photos at last Bellamy.
I picked up the 21mm Ricoh GR LTM lens and it never leaves my Minolta Leitz CL such a sharp and beautiful lens. Not great for digital full frame color sensors because you get a lot of color shifting. But for black and white or film it’s beautiful
I’ve always wanted to try one of these! Even more so now that I’ve been shooting 21mm pretty regularly. Would be really cool if Ricoh did a digital GR21 where you could use the crop function to get 21/28/35 out of the lens. All my favorite focal lengths in one camera!
@@TheWutangclan1995 for sure, I just don’t like the added bulk of that lens adapter. The main thing I love about the GR is the size and that thing just adds a bit too much bulk. Native 21mm on a GRIII special edition or something would be the dream
Actually would like a supplemental video about the Ricoh company, how it started, why it clings onto making Pentax DSLRs when the world is going mirrorless.
I have a little issue while using flash on GR1S. Not like other point and shoots, GR1S still shoots on lower shutter speed in lower light conditions even when the flash is forced on, often creating undesired motion blur mixed with flash, instead of freezing a shot like other point and shoots do. I tried setting the exposure meter on minus 2 (lowest exposure), to somehow trick it and make it shoot a bit faster. The motion blur has improved slightly, but still nowhere near what I need it to do. Any ideas?
I'm surprised Ricoh don't look into manufacturing a compact film camera based on the GR range. They wouldn't even need to do it through Kickstarter, as there would be plenty of interest already!
Bellamy, it have been meta if you wore here the Ricoh GR t-shirts made by Uniqlo. Quite expensive though.

Out of curiosity, what year does the date imprint go up to? Although I don't shoot it much now, I still love my digital GR (the first APS-C one). It's perfect just the way it is, and I never did find a compelling reason to upgrade.
There’s one in my locale for about US$370. Wondering if I should pull the trigger..I love ricohs but I’m not sure about 1. The focal length and 2. The remaining lifespan on the camera
Lots of them GR films cameras have faulty lcd half work or dead and electronic wiring are not reliable cold or dirty soldering or broken wire . When they are in working condition they are the best , better than contax t2,3 , better than nikon 28ti, 35 Ti better than yashica t3 and 4 …. But they cost over $1000 “ over price ? “ and not last like many others .
Yup :/ only thing stopping me from getting one. All these old point and shoots are old with aging electronics but when this particular camera is known over all others to have a high failure rate that's not a good sign.
One of my greatest moments was finding a GR1 in a London charity shop for £8.
Id cry

I know 全泰 in Taipei still repair these old film camera and vintage lenses.

When my GR1s decided to stop working after 15 years and couldn't be repaired, I ended up replacing it with a GR IIIx and couldn't be happier.
🤩😍🥰
So good I'll watch it twice.
Awesome!

What a wonderful camera ! Really appreciate the trip down memory lane when thinking about this gem.

Really enjoyed the video. A GR1V has been on my eBay watch list for over a year. Maybe I'll finally get one...
A compact camera with a pc sync port?! 🤤🤤🤤
Would love to see a video on the Fujifilm natura s with it’s crazy 24mm 1.9!!!
With a roll of Natura 1600😁
Lol. I feel like if he does. The price will go up

Great video Bellamy!! ✌️

You can buy the 21mm lens but it’s screw Mount. I couldn’t score one for a good deal so just went with the Contax 21 for my g2. Fucking amazing lens.

I own the GR1s and GR3/digital as I prefer the 28mm focal length.Great video
Good choice!
hi mister Hunt. there are any other wide angle point and shoot analog cameras out there?
Actually would like a supplemental video about the Ricoh company, how it started, why it clings onto making Pentax DSLRs when the world is going mirrorless.
The lens has really nice vingette.
I would love to buy this cameras along with the Ricoh GR IIIx.
Dear Bellamy,
Canny video as always:)

Thank you! Cheers!

I love these, too bad they’re hard to repair nowadays.
There are multiple camera shops over seas that work on repairs for these babies
Any thoughts on the pixii rangfinder?
Locally I could have bought one for $150 this year, but the $100 bidder was already en route.
Fortunately for that buyer, I follow the code...
$150 for a GR21? There is no code 😅
@@MattLovesCameras The dude sold it too! Resold it immediately and I would have used that pupper forever.
@@punkrachmaninoff I’ve had that happen to me twice before when I’ve sold cameras at below market rates 😢

21mm is one of my favorite focal length, if the price tag of this camera wouldn‘t be so hefty. 😢 what film were the pictures shoot on?
Just shot on Kodak Gold 200

Lifespan is for sure the biggest concern, it’s purely a flip of a coin how long it’ll last
When’s fugufilm coming?? 🙂😉😘
When it comes...
May i ask which bag are you using in the video?
It is an Ona x JCH limited edition. Sadly no longer available.

The hat, where do I get the hat!
Was a limited run, sorry all gone :(
Looked at the price after this video… the price is into Leica territory:(
I've seen used ones for up to $2300. I guess Moriyama made them famous
Aren’t the LCDs on these cameras shit and 99.9% certainty to fail ?
