Nice video! A couple of comments for others: 1. Making a jig to cut bow-ties on a band saw is crazy easy!!! 2. When tracing with a marking knife, it is easier/better to start at each corner and cut inwards. That way, you cannot overshoot past the corner! 3. When chiseling at the edge, be sure to resist the urge to lever the chisel to break off the slice you just cut! Or you will bend the top of the edge outwards.
Only John can do a video about cracks and bow ties leaving the viewer with a good dose of humor and knowledge. John you “crack” me up. Nice job. Nice tutorial sir
I'm a green bay fan 100% but I love watching you and my second team to vote for if mine fails is the Steelers but I love your work and your teaching I'm new and have already learned so much from you thank you so much
John great tutorial. The inlay within the inlay is beautiful. I also have to tell you how much I love hearing you say "yinz". I grew up in Johnstown but now I live in Texas I've been here so long I catch myself saying "y'all". I need to get back to PA for a visit soon. No I am not a Dallas fan. I'm a Steelers fan till the coffin drops. And beyond. 🖤💛🖤💛🖤
I'm getting so many ideas for things I want to do from watching videos from many channels on wood working but I'm certainly binging a lot of yours and the best bit is that when you say if I get X many likes I'll do a video on how to do xyz I generally find you have already done it and I get to roll my binge right into that. That said you still get the likes from me and when I get my workshop set up I plan to try inlaying animal silhouettes to tables although I think it will take me a while to pull it off.
John, this is by far one of the best video tutorials I have seen on bowties. I am a big fan of your work. I am also a woodworker, I just do not have the big set up.... yet. From a veteran, I am also even more impressed by your ties to the veteran community. Keep it up big guy!
I’m so close to sinking all of my stimulus and rona money into woodworking and taking it to the next level. Watching all your videos has made me go out and explore my hobby but I think I’m ready to do work for commission as a side hustle
Dude just go at it full-time!!! Drop that shity 9 to 5 job and do what you love!!! I'm seriously dropping a two weeks notice at the miserable place of that I work at and jumping feet first into wood working!!! For me, I just have this really good guy feeling, that I will be so much happier!! Yes, I am some what worried about having a decent income, but honestly, I'm not going to stress and flip out over it. I just want to be happy.....and if it doesn't work out, I can always find some shity ass factory job!!!
I use a similar technique. I try to use a rip off of an end of a board so I can make several from one scrap then I cut the first angle and scribe a line so i can use it for reference and make minor adjustments to the size. I make a few extra so I can get the exact fit I want. It helps to have one of those screw down cam action clamps.
Really well done John! I'd love to see more videos on woodworking basics. Some dedicated videos on how you tackle dovetails or maybe mortise & tenon joinery would be a great start.
The blue tape idea is a good one for this application. The only caution I'd give to your process is the depth of the inlay. Being so thin in relation to the thickness of the crack, it's unlikely that the bowtie will do much to control seasonal movement of the crack. But, you can still do a similar one coming from the other side, which would help stabilize the piece.
At 10:05 you chamfer the top edge of the inlay, but we all make mistakes, no biggie. At least I think I heard you say the blue mark goes on the bottom. Well, it all came out great in the end.
He chamfers the "top" from the layout (non-tape side), because that side is actually going to the bottom. The side that is touching the table top during layout will be your top face at the end because it matches the line you cut. If you made your bowties perfectly square it shouldn't be a problem either way; however if they aren't square and you do it the other way you're likely to have gaps along the top where the wrong face doesn't quite line up with your slot.

Awesome video! The tape trick is magical!
Also, fun fact. Bats do actually have thumbs!
Bats have thumbs, yinz. Don't let this anti-batist fool you! Love version 2.0. Always good to show you're getting better!

These are my favourite things to do in woodwork working with basic hand tools brilliant video
Thank you - especially for the tip about the thickness of the inlay.
Tutorials are a good contrast to the extreme builds. Mix it up. Give us ideas within reach. Great stuff as always.

Bringing us together one butterfly inlay at a time

Inlay some pinstripes on furniture. Maybe a walnut bench, with maple inlay trim.
