I had to check what matzo meal was, because I dont think we have it in italy, and apparently it is made from the matzo bread breadcrumbs, if I understand correctly. I'm always surprised that there's nothing jewish related around here (at least as far as I am aware). Anyway, "pane azzimo" breadcrumbs seem to be what i have to look for.
Illy, my grandmother makes a legendary Matzo-Ball soup! She was so happy to see a “young person” talking about matzo balls. She adores your animation style btw!
Love this! I’ve been cooking for a long time and grew up working in my family’s restaurant but my confidence in cooking still gets depleted sometimes! Cooking beloved family recipes (especially easy ones,) is a great way to feel better about your cooking skills and remind yourself of what you’re capable of ❤
I feel like I’m the Jewish person who doesn’t like the actual matzo ball but loves the doom but I’m also weird cause I LOVE matzah I eat it even if it isn’t Passover lol
I never understood why gentiles like matzas, maybe cause they didn't had to replace all the bread with matzas for 2 weeks once a year. When I worked in Tel Aviv in a supermarket near Passover, me and the other Jewish workers were so grumpy when we started to put matzas on the shelf, but the Arab workers were over the moon, bought a year supply of matzas
My mom raised me on cooking Puerto Rican food , my boyfriend doesn’t like rice, beans, or any of the seasonings I tend to use so now I only cook that when I’m alone or when I go home to visit. Otherwise I’m always trying random recipes, I’ve tried all the meal kit boxes but the only meat that was worth getting was chicken, pork, or ground beef, steaks and nice seafood was not good. Plus I got tired of all the meals not being that good. So it’s all up to me now, I must feed my man 😂
One of the most important things when cooking is simply don't get distracted, don't watch videos or shows or anything, especially if you're inexperienced so you won't burn anything mess up the recipe
If you do end up getting distracted or accidentally mess up your recipe, remember that it's not a big deal. Worst thing that has a /probable/ chance of happening would be making a gross dish or just burning it.
Literally me on Valentine's Day I gave my boyfriend food poisoning trying to make chicken alfredo. The worst part was my stomach is so used to me shiting cooking I wasn't even sick must have an iron gut after all the crappy food I cook for myself over the years 😭😭😭😂😂😂
When we were dating, I made fried chicken for my boyfriend. He bit into it and it was not cooked all the way . I had worked so hard and messed it up. I started to cry and he was like, "babe, its delicious, I love it". And he ate it! He just kept eating this hemorrhaging drumstick and telling me it was great. I have never been more touched and horrified in my life. I married that foolish man and this April is our 3 year anniversary. And no matter how bad I mess up a meal, he always eats it with a smile.

I'm definitely a "learned to cook as an adult" person, I didn't really start making meals for myself until I was 20 and got off my school's dining plan, and it... it can be a lot. A lot of tragically burned garlic ruining dishes. But last year I perfectly replicated my dad's matzo ball soup recipe for the first time and it was one of my proudest cooking moments :) The secret ingredient is mushrooms, it's what makes it better than any other vegetarian matzo ball soup out there. Even if you're using chicken broth, toss some mushrooms in there, it'll be great
Congratulations! That is an awesome achievement. You got this :) And as someone who cooked a lot as a kid too (and just as much now) sometimes it can seem a bit jarring that someone your age or older than you doesn’t know how to do ___, but just remember everyone comes from all different walks of life ❤️ A walk which may or may not have included cooking, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Girl I thought I was the only one that was scared of turning on the stove. Like it’s so scary for no reason. And don’t even get me started about touching the pan when the stove is on. I just don’t wanna burn my hand 🥺😭😩
When I walked passed that magical matzo ball soup kit remembered this video, now I’m rewatching as I’m making it and eating it. AND IT IS SO GOOD!! Thank you for introducing me to this amazing soup and I love your videos!
I've been cooking since my mid-teens; inspired by my mom's cooking. And ever since this summer after moving into a new house with my dad and sister, I started cooking way more. Almost every week. I've cooked chicken and waffles, cheesecake, borsch, brisket, and pasta dishes. It is a lot of fun exploring new dishes and brainstorming ways to plan batches of meals for a low cost. One piece of advice I can give you, Illy, and anyone else reading this (which I should have learned way sooner) is to never overcomplicate things. Last month, I attempted to make those viral potato noodles. The recipe calls for one part potato to one part cornstarch. It took A LOT of work. Boiling the potatoes, mashing the potatoes, mixing the starch, boiling the noodles, and chilling the noodles. Kneading all of that dough was exhausting. And once I tasted the noodles, they were not good. No amount of sauce could obscure that strong taste of cornstarch. Plus, I bought the wrong kind of squash to go with it as the skin made it too tough to eat. So, yeah.
I remember one time I mixed up the salt and sugar in a cake 😀 Bonus points because I couldn’t test the batter due to my raw egg allergy so I didn’t notice until it was fully baked. *that was a fun day.*
My style of cooking is: 1. Comes up with some random combination of ingredients 2. makes it 3. enjoys it, while my family suffers in the background. (my personal favorite outcomes of this are macaroni and brioche sandwiches, and caramel chicken nuggets)
soup time lyrics: soup time soup time bout to get a pot for some soup crimes soup time soup time veggies in my hand lookin MIGHTY FINE soup time, soup time, gonna peel the potato- (oh woops) pt.2: injury time injury time time to account for my cooking crimes
I was the kid that started cooking at 7 years old. By the time I got into high school and started taking cooking classes, I was the kid that impressed everyone around me by knowing how to do all of the techniques already, since I had been doing them for nearly 10 years. In college I attracted my now wife by making pizza from scratch. And now, with all of that experience and drive to cook more complicated dishes, I've become the person that everyone among my friends and family get super excited when I cook. A few of my friends even ask me to taste their leftovers of dishes they were proud of, because they want my opinion. They know that I'll give my honest thoughts on it, and they want that so they can become a better cook. And I love that so much. A friend even asked me to take notes at her wedding on all of the food (which I did, and felt really awkward doing while I was there). All of this to say, I love when people start learning to cook, and I especially love it when they try more difficult dishes that they weren't 100% sure they could pull off. Last thing. The number one most common critique I give is "don't be afraid to use more salt." Most people under salt their dishes in fear of over salting. The seasoning will be great, but the under salting just leaves the dish with a little something missing. And imo, I prefer a slightly over salted dish than an under salted one.
"I first tried cooking in college" it's moments like these I'm glad I grew up with many siblings and had to cook a lot to help my parents. Propably one of the best abillities to have.

My brother in law LOVES Matzo Ball Soup! And I will forever remember when he was sick and my sister and I were going shopping and she was frustrated they didn't have the soup mix at the store. She exclaimed "How can I make my husband feel better without Matzo Ball Soup!" It makes me laugh even years later

Everyone in my family makes matzah ball soup for Hanukkah and it is the BEST THING EVER! It’s my favorite Jewish tradition, but the best part is when they don’t turn out too perfect. (Whether the matzah balls are too big, or the potatoes burn, or my mom adds too much baking powder etc) it just makes everything better when we learn from ours mistakes, plus the soup ALWAYS tastes a little different than it did last year. It’s so cool to see others cooking my favorite recipe 🥰

i think a huge reason why ppl struggle w this skill as an adult is bc their parents never taught them. so a parenting tip is to have your kids help make dinner also bc they'll be proud that they made it and wanna finish it, and they'll gain that skill.
Mhm. I was taught how to cook starting at about 9 years old. The first time I went to college and food came up, I was a little shocked to learn that some folks just never leaned how to cook…. And I enjoyed the learning process! On some days off, while my parents work, my sibling and I would clean, and I would cook sometimes. My mom will come home with a warm meal ready for dinner on those days. Well. One of those days, I need to ask my mom how to make pozole.
Ahhh, perfect parenting advice, that is the exact same thing that happened with me, I went from learning how to cook rice at a pretty young age, to making dinner most of the time, with a slight interest in food science.
2:22 these are both the proper way to hold a knife, it just depends how much pressure you need to apply. The one with the check mark is for precision and control. The one with the x is for cutting large and thick ingredients, think eggplant or large cuts of meat when you want to cut up the bone as well.(use a cleaver when cutting up bones)
I love cooking. Since during my childhood my dad worked a lot of hours, I spent all the day with my mom, so I watched her doing all the house work, hence by the time I was 12 I knew how to do them, but out of them I loved getting into my kitchen and start making food for my family. And yes I have cut and burn myself a bunch of times, some even left a few scars, but I take those as a medal of honor to show my efforts to make progress as a cook.
Hey. I burned myself on cinnamon rolls once cause I wasn't paying attention to where the base of my hand was while taking it out. Still see the burn sometimes
@@Scarab3271 yeah, oil is dangerous, I saw a restaurant burn because of it. Someone left a dirty cloth near the fryer, some oil jumped... The next thing we know, we are running for our lives.

When I grew up I used to eat “fish balls” and no stop thinking that it used to be made out of fish but now it’s made out of toufoo and has some mince in it it wasssss sooo gooood
I finally got to make matzo ball soup too today and it’s delicious the matzo balls look like bread after cooked but are so soft when you bite into them
The Matzo Ball Soup sounds like a dish made out of being poor and using whatever is left in the kitchen… and as someone who grew up in a poor income home, my mother got crazy in the kitchen and she made some meals that are so nostalgic and so basic lol.
Same, hell, the stews are by far the most nostalgic dishes out of them all for me. Like cabbage stew, that *sh-* slaps, and is the personal flavor and food of home and love for me. Specifically, cabbage and sausage stew.
You're actually not that far off for a lot of dishes! Dishes that became iconic staples of different ethnic cuisines aren't just what the nobles were eating. Especially as far-flung spices and ingredients became more affordable to the working class. From tacos to sushi, poor people need to eat too.
thank you guys so much for your patience and support

My mom raised me on cooking Puerto Rican food , my boyfriend doesn’t like rice, beans, or any of the seasonings I tend to use so now I only cook that when I’m alone or when I go home to visit. Otherwise I’m always trying random recipes, I’ve tried all the meal kit boxes but the only meat that was worth getting was chicken, pork, or ground beef, steaks and nice seafood was not good. Plus I got tired of all the meals not being that good. So it’s all up to me now, I must feed my man 😂

I'm definitely a "learned to cook as an adult" person, I didn't really start making meals for myself until I was 20 and got off my school's dining plan, and it... it can be a lot. A lot of tragically burned garlic ruining dishes. But last year I perfectly replicated my dad's matzo ball soup recipe for the first time and it was one of my proudest cooking moments :)
The secret ingredient is mushrooms, it's what makes it better than any other vegetarian matzo ball soup out there. Even if you're using chicken broth, toss some mushrooms in there, it'll be great

So, yeah.
