I'm going to call it now: Aerith doesn't necessarily have to die now. If we are in a new timeline split influenced by a version of Sephiroth from the future, then he may strategically hold back from killing her. Aerith's death not only further mobilized Cloud and his party against Sephiroth, but Aerith returning to the planet gave her spirit the opportunity to call on the Life Stream it to support Holy's power. Without the Life Stream coming in to play during the original end to FF7, Meteor would have still hit the planet.

So going forward I think it's important to acknowledge that the entire FF7R series will very likely be divisive, and while it will lead to interesting debates, I think we should also try and remember to be civil and respectful of differing viewpoints on the series. As someone who's more on the negative side of things after the first Part, I fully believe that both those who aren't happy with the big story changes and those who are happy have valid points, & the situation is more nuanced than just "this side's right, the other one's wrong." Trying to shoot down other's opinions on things or being disrespectful will just lead to the fandom being toxic bit by bit. Let's be better than that.

Aerith is trying to change the OG timeline which is why she says everytime the whispers touch her she loses something. She wants to save the planet AND humanity so the planet is trying to take away her memories or feelings for humanity. The planet likes the OG outcome since humanity is wiped out and the planet lives on without humanity destroying it slowly. Since Aerith sent the info about the future to her past self via the lifestream, she is now trying to find a way to save both.

My personal take on it is that Sephiroth is the one changing the OG timeline, and he's influencing Cloud from the very beginning to take charge of destiny. It's likely he's traveled back, and feels if destiny can be beaten then he stands a better chance at surviving and winning. The third timeline, being Zack's survival, may be Aerith's attempt at reforging history. If Cloud fails, then Zack may succeed in his own alternate timeline.

I think the joke here is that they can actually do both! they can kill her in one timeline then save her in the other. probably we will get another 95% faithful remake, then in the end show the other timeline where it went the opposite direction. eventually converging at some point for a big fight against god or something.the more clear it is that there are two timelines the more clear its SE having its cake and eating it. they will following the og story while at the same time showing a different "happier" path and then merge at the end so we have everyone who dies being replaced in the end with their alt selves. this way everyone can die but nobody stays dead.

    • @AkatsukiBoss13
      @AkatsukiBoss13 4 года назад +3

Yeah it's something that gets forgotten about but in FF7 the ending is actually bittersweet for another reason, that Humanity ultimately goes extinct despite stopping Sephiroth. Hence why in FF7R, when they see the vision of Red and his cubs from the ending of FF7, Red treats it as the outcome of them failing in the battle against the Harbinger. Because if they don't defeat the Harbinger and the path that Destiny has written for them, their efforts will ultimately be for naught. The Planet will survive but Humanity will still be just as dead.
And frankly I think that's why Aerith herself is fighting against Destiny. While I have no doubt that would want to save Zack, I don't think that's her primary goal. Her goal is to save the Planet AND Humanity.

I think at the end of AC, when Sephiroth said "I will never be a memory" he realized he could use the Lifestream to send his mind back to the point where he fell into the Lifestream so he was able to intervene through anyone who carried the Jenova/Sephiroth Cells(ie Cloud, Zack, the numbered men, and Jenova pieces).
I don't personally think that Zack survived, so much as that was Aerith seeing a vision of Zack's last stand, him trying to save Cloud, and maybe a hint that he still lives on inside of Cloud's subconscious mind. Kinda like how he appeared in Cloud's near death vision at the end of AC with Aerith and gave him the strength to win.
And maybe the Aerith in the Lifestream was able to fallow Sephiroth back in time to warn herself?

    • @ProjectGenesisMusic
      @ProjectGenesisMusic 4 года назад

Did you not watch this video? Zack survives in an alternate timeline mainly to show that there can be new possible outcomes with destiny defeated. The timeline in this game Zack is dead. It seems like Aerith saw the outcome of the original game when she was looking into the Lifestream and that's how she knows everything and why she is startled in the alley this time hence the teasing of Sephiroths theme.

Also in the ending Barret says that if they go through the portal there is a possibility they are never coming back. So at the end:
    1. Did they go back to the Remake timeline after Sephiroth's defeat? If they did it would have a single Remake timeline.
    2. If they didn't, it is possible that they created another timeline where our heroes no longer exist as they vanished forever. Creating a Vanished Heroes timeline where Sephiroth of that timeline wins.
    3. And if they made it to another timeline where duplicates of themselves exist would create another timeline altogether.

There are much more things Zelda and FF have in common. (Going from their latest installments)
Both have a hero (Cloud and Link), who is chased by an inescapable evil. Both are exceptional swordsmen and are very socially awkward and stoic, having a hard time speaking about their true feelings. And both fall in love with the heroine they just recently met. Both of them have burdens, which they can just share with their respective heroine.
Oh yeah. And both got some memory issues. And not to forget both have crossdressed lol.
Both games have a heroine (Zelda and Aerith) that met the hero recently and becomes close to him very quickly. Also both heroines have some sort of divine power and a destiny they have to fullfil. They both never had anybody to bear their burdens to until they meet their soulmate, which is the hero. They compliment each other and have a natural relationship.
And both games have the second love interest (Mipha and... Tifa lol), which are both childhood friends of the hero. They love the hero since their childhood, but are to shy to open up to him about their true feelings, which leads to them being unhappy.
It's actually funny how many things these two games share. ^^
And that coming from a giant fan of both of them.

The ending of part 1 was one giant metaphor and message from the development team that we gave you your remake more or less, but from now on it is a new game, but with the same quest and locations.

Now with the FF7 Remake with the Whispers, they are now incorporating core themes of Berserk (overcoming destiny) to make it different from the OG

If there is a timeline where Zack lives, Cloud wouldn't have adopted Zack's memories/identity or have the Buster Sword. But Cloud would still have survived with SOLDIER mako treatment. I didn't think Zack survived when I played through FF7 Remake but the scene of Zack seeing Midgar surrounded by whispers doesn't make sense. Zack's death takes place well before the events in FF7s intro. Cloud is nursed to health by Tifa after being partially braindead and he just suddenly gains Zack's identity/memories of SOLDIER. Idk. I am hoping they release Remake pt 2 soon but... It seems like the main reason to live now is to hold out long enough to experience that for years to come.

The FF7 Remake is going to be created to lure in old fans and players of the original franchise whilst trying to do something new with the story. All that being said, the makers realize they must hit each note of the original storyline in order for them to even contemplate messing with the original story and how it's told. The devs want nothing more than to have diehard fans feel like they're playing the original but be surprised as to the new elements brought to the story. This has brought us to this current timeline split we have before us. The story is going to continue to become more elaborate and at the same time the makers are going to make sure to hit every note, place, and instance that the original has to offer. The biggest piece of evidence of this is when Barret gets KILLED by Sephiroth but then comes back to life because that wasn't his destiny. IM SHOCKED NOBODY BRINGS THIS UP IN THEIR EXPLANATION OF THE ENDING AS THAT IS THE SMOKING GUN THAT PROVES THE MAKERS WILL DEVIATE FROM THE MAIN STORY! My worry is that they spent so much time in Midgar that they may not have time to follow the original story and hit every town and nuance of the original. Was it really worth it to have players spend 8 hours walking back and forth in between missions and to introduce characters like Roche when he has no baring on the story and doesn't even show up in the original?! These are all just time wasters where me as a player would actually be further in the story or exploring the world before me. We have to keep in mind that Midgar in the original is debatably the worst part of the story! We still no NOTHING about the main characters at this point in the game! The true essence of why we play is through the latter parts of the story at the end of disc 1, and all of disc 2 and 3. In order to fulfill all these gaps they will need at least three games for sure. Kalm, Golden Saucer, Cosmo Canyon, Costa Del Sol, Corel (and the Dyne/Barret backstory), Mideel, Forgotten Capital, Bone Village, Weapon, Knights of the Round, Neibelheim, Rocket Town, Wutai (which has huge implications on the remake), and even the slap fight! All of this and more will need to be in the game even if the makers are going to do something different with the story. My only worry is if they spent this much time in Midgar then that means the rest of the towns may get lost amongst all the changes. The one thing I know for sure is the ending to this game is going to be a complete mystery until it's played. Fact is, we're all on an incredibly long journey where the nuances of the original will be present but the outcome will be much different than what we experienced in 97'.

Sorry, but a Split did NOT happen when Zack survived, had it, the Shinra Mascot would have been the same. This must have happened before the mascot was created. The destruction of the Arbiter of Fate probably had such a profound effect that it did not just affect the original FF7 timeline going forward, but it also affected it going backwards (hence Zack's survival and the change in the mascot). The Arbiter's of Fate probably exist in non-linear time, meaning their destruction affected all of time, not just the original FF7 timeline at that point. The two Sephiroths nugget we got recently could explain this, but Aerith seems to also been aware of what is happening... maybe both Sephiroth and Aerith exist or perceive time differently than the others due to their Ancient nature. All I know is that I am excited to see where we go from here.

It makes sense that Sephiroth is messing with time, when Aerith says going through the door there is no coming back and the edge of creation which doesn't exist is what sephiroth says.
He knows he can't die but living in purgatory must suck for him becoming one with the planet really sucks and he wants to change that, you have to remember also in the Dirge FF7 genesis is alive which he is sealed under by minerva and if you beat dirge you get a secret ending which shows the seal being broken.
You never know they might flip the scripts and bring the whole cast of dirge to the scene and genesis is the boss and this time sephiroth joins up but that's just a theory. Also the fact that they show some of the jessies gloves near the end also could be a big change especially when cloud walks past zack carrying cloud and he survived the attack which killed him in crisis core and the fact zack seen the ghost swirling around shinra. also the fact he see's things happening he seen before like building coming down and he ducks and guy goes are you okay? even seeing her die and the materia dropping. so yeah sephiroth is messing with the timeline for sure.

Had more time to let it sink in the ending, the ff7 remakes guys had to reset our expectations for a new game.
The producers said to themselves, we've shown the world we can remake ff7 and done a very good job thats 50%, the next 50% of games coming up is a fresh new take on the story.
So 50% original, next 50% a fresh new game. So they are giving fans best of both worlds.
Same world, same characters but different story.
    They done it well tbh.
But I hope the differences of past events, by beating the Whispers are shown as flashbacks for information only of how different it woulda been, like a 'what if', and not a different timeline that ppl are aware of. Coz in the actual ff7 remake we played Zack is dead, but we need flashbacks of past to inform players of how different the story will be.
Use flashbacks as information only, to show the changes due to our consequences and we play the future result.
Remember, with ff7remake there's alot of stuff in the past that happens.
In hinduism funny enough, we don't believe in destiny so much, because it's unfair if your born having to live a life pre-destined for misery. We believe you have karma, which isn't how the west believe it as what goes around comes around, that's wrong.. There's no scale system. Karma means action, your action can rewrite your life regardless its up to. This is what is happening in ff7 remake. They players know their future, they will change it if they can.
Remember, gaia is a sentient planet that manifests how it feels.. So concepts such a defence system when threatend like the weapons as represented and whispers to show destiny.
So I'm slowly beginning to accept it, but will hate it if there are too many timelines like dbs or chrono trigger.
So flashbacks of past I. E. If Zack is alive, is just information to players of how the past story has changed given the defeat of planet whispers I. E. Destiny manifest, still the same timeline and not alternative one. I'd like it like that.
The producers used the planets sentient nature, to drive the storyline and change it.
Gaia is alive and has defence mechanisms of concepts to manifest. If its in trouble, weapons come out. If destiny is not followed in the planets belief, as it believes in it whispers come out to help.
It's just that sephiroth or the effect of whispers showed the ff7 characters their fate. They wanna go against planet.
So it's ff7 team vs sephiroth and Gaia.
Tbh after completing the game I never got how different they were planning to change it, after doing further research.
    Just to be clear..
When I say alternative time line I mean for example that I don't want the current ff7remake team to meet future or past ff7 remake team and have multiple storylines.
I accept though that the ff7 remake story will change due to Gaia whispers and sephiroth evil plans. Flashbacks I. E zack, only correcting what we already know to update our knowledge.
So we will have the original story line of all ff7 compilations and this ff7 remake as a spinoff.

There is no time travel at all.
What everyone sees, from our heroes to our villains, are only all the possible outcomes that can occur. However, that's all they are: Possibilities and probabilities. Sephiroth, via his insano powers obtained from Jenova, somehow saw a future where he lost so miserably without any hope of his mama, Jenova, reconquering the Planet. Aerith, via her Ancient powers, saw the potential future where she died and ascended as a Lifestream entity. The scene where Zach carries Cloud back to Midgar is just a probable outcome, but not reality. For all we know, maybe the so-called "world" where Zach still lives, maybe that's some kind of pocket dimension forged from the Planet itself, forged as Aerith's personal afterlife: Remember that the Planet is alive, and Aerith can commune with the Planet. In fact, I do find it curious that apparently no one addresses the probability that the Ancients weren't extinguished by Jenova, but rather abandoned their fleshy bodies to merge their souls with the Lifestream. As for the Whispers, they're extensions of the Planet's will, neither good nor evil, doing their duty to maintain balance over the life and death of the Planet, but still susceptible to the corrupting influence of a being as OPd as Sephiroth.

"Find Marlene, right?" and when she calls Barret Marlene's Dad without knowing. (Felt weird the first time through but passable. On second playing it's mind blowing.)

I don't think we have enough information at the moment to make a call as to the events of timelines. it is very possible that in the FF7R we have Zack again now that the Arbiters of fate are gone. Thus it was no longer Zack's fate to die there for the events of the original timeline to take place. I don't think anyone actually acknowledges time travel at all in the game in fact. but they merely got glimpses into the future they were destined to have. at least that was my interpretation. I don't subscribe to the Futurama alternate dimension/timeline idea. (where pretty much all timelines are the same but with one or two inconsequential differences. in this case being Shinra's doge mascot.) it really depends on which version of time travel they go with. if they even try for timelines and time travel. it's pretty open actually and I think they did this on purpose. in the event that the fan base hates this new direction, then the dev team can course correct. Or, if the new ideas are welcomed the dev team are free to try out new things but I really don't think they are going to deviate too much from the tried and true, proven to work, beaten path set by the original.
my only argument for this all being one new continuity to replace the original is that the Arbiters of Fate seem to exist outside of time itself. meaning that if the Arbiters you fight are created by the future that is to come, and they exist in the past, (meaning their boss fight) then they would essentially exist across all of time. destroying them really at any point in any time and then they cease to exist basically altogether. rather then they exist and control over an infinite number of timelines with again, the only difference being inconsequential banners, mascots, colors of T-shirts, which boy bands rocked out loud, or in the case that this video is getting across, timelines that's only difference being that there are only a few days to a week in difference in time between the very start of the game, and the ending scene where Zack walks past the Avalanche team in alternate dimensions.
This is where messing with time travel really starts to hurt your brain. As much as I hate to be that guy. yes, FF7R is a game for the fans. however the games still need to be able to draw in new audiences. how many of us were kids/teens when we played the first FF7 23 years ago? how many of us have kids now that will play these games? I'm sure the Dev team learned their lesson from how poorly received Kingdom Hearts 3 was. don't go crazy with multiple timelines and alternate dimensions. multiple timelines, means multiple Sephiroths. where did we see something like this before? Sephiroth seems to be the only one able to move between the timelines, or at least access and move between dimensions. meaning if they want this to work, they have to keep to really one timeline without dragging in characters from alternate timelines running parallel to the one in the game. meaning that seeing Zack at the end of this game just to show there are now multiple timelines and nothing is ever planned to be done with them is a waste.
we also have to remember that we see Biggs alive at the end of this game as well as it being hinted at that Jessie made it out too. the Arbiters were swarming the streets and the tower at the time because that was destined to fall and take out as many people as it could. however there really is no reason to suspect that they are in a different timeline from the one Avalanche is in right now. my theory on this is that by destroying the Fates, you wouldn't prevent their influences after that point in time, but you would undoing everything they had destined for people throughout time itself. (Since the Fates seem to exist outside of time) meaning, Zack, Wedge, Biggs, and Jessie would all be alive and well in this new timeline. to erase to one in the original game 23 years ago.

This is the 2nd video I have seen trying to explain tbe game that leaves out Red XIII's vision. Its a vision not only 500 years into the future but one EVERYONE saw. Didn't Barrett even ask, "What the hell was that?"
I think Red has a connection like Aerith and has seen the future himself at points. Its also why he seemed kinda gloom in his response. We also know what he saw.
I bet timelines are going to intersect one another, which is why there's both a sense of confusion and deja vu.
Finally, Sephiroth being at the edge of creation is interesting because the celestial background reminds me of the end of his Supernova summon, which, essentially erases creation.

There isn't any official release date but the FF7R team started working on part 2 pretty much as soon as part 1 came out, and with the groundwork for the engine, thousands of assets, models and code already created, it shouldn't take nearly as long. If we compare this to the FFXIII release schedule, then between FFXIII and FFXIII-2 it was 2 years.

but what's even more mind fucking. that sephiroth had infected so much history. there's no way to tell what histroy's actually the right one we are seeing. crisis core has given a hint something's a bit off with the whole Zack case. not only that but at the very beginning when he was in the middle of training than the date sephiroth appeared out of no where and angeal told him that wasn't meant to happen at all. even the anime version showed he died differently. crisis core he died from fighting for to long to the point he's in a blink of death. anime he had his guard down and got killed by a sniper. there's also the case with cloud keeps remembering differently "10 years ago" on between sephiroth had a mental break down and how Zack died. and here's date sephiroth once again in the "remake" appearing out of no where. and now I'm guessing sephiroth from the very start I guessing after he died. he already was trying to change histroy. would explain why the spin-offs felled a bit off on some places and the original game timeline I betting he was testing how powerful he is so far. would explain why he was playing puppet master from the original game. alot of things has happened in this game. but at lest with FF8 you have some ideas what was going on with what was real and what was not real.

Hello. Just to let you know, the title of your video is very likely a major spoiler for someone who hasn't beaten FF7R yet. Just saying.
Until proven otherwise, I personally do not believe that parallel timelines/universes/realities have been created, but that there is a single, linear timeline in the FF7 universe, and its events have now been altered. Allow me to explain: The existence of the whispers and their mission to preserve events exactly as they occurred previously tells me that there is but one reality, otherwise they would not care if things turn out differently in another timeline.
Some people say that there are now two Sephiroths in the FF7 world, but I believe this to be farcical as well. Look at Aerith: it is clear that it is her future consciousness possessing her past self. I believe this to be the same for Sephiroth: he came back into his body imprisoned in Mako at the North Crater, when he was at the height of his power, so that he could once again control all of the Jenova cells in the world and use his clones as vehicles for his consciousness. The difference now is that he has the added mission of changing the course of destiny, which he does through Cloud, in tricking the latter into destroying the whispers. He also manifests himself to Cloud and the others much earlier than he did in the original game.
For the ending with Zack, I believe that the deaths of the whispers has caused ripples across time, even into the past, where Zack is able to change his fate. Aerith, her consciousness being from a future that no longer exists, is able to perceive this change in the past in sensing Zack's survival, just as she once sensed his death in Crisis Core. Cloud, on the other hand, would instantly have had his memories altered, and he now must have obtained the Buster Sword and Zack's identity in some other way, since Zack in now alive with the past having changed. As for Stamp's image, well, it could have been that that was from the cartoon dog's early debut, which later changed into a beagle, and now will remain the original, unchanged terrier it once was for some as-yet unknown reason (the past has changed). Why this particular moment in history was affected is anyone's guess, but I personally theorize that it's because it was at this very moment in time that Sephiroth's consciousness from the future arrived and possessed his past self, but I could be wrong. (Conversely, I believe that we witness the exact moment Aerith's future consciousness takes control of her past self in the very beginning of the game, which is why she starts out with her eyes closed, whereas they were open in the original game. But we see the same scene at the end of FF7 with Aerith opening her eyes, indicating the cyclical nature of her mind.)
One problem, however, which some people may point out, is the recent translation from the new Ultimania which states that there are two Clouds which cannot recognize each other, and that the one still carries the Buster Sword while the other is helped along by a surviving Zack. While on the surface this does seem to indicate two alternate universes with two of every character, it could simply mean that there are literally two Clouds appearing onscreen at once. As I said earlier, I believe that this is Aerith perceiving the change to the timeline.
So, in a nutshell, I believe the timeline of FF7 to be one linear continuum, albeit one that sees major alterations, and that the events of the original timeline no longer exist. Until proven otherwise, this is how I will interpret the story.

Interesting takes, thanks for writing this
"The existence of the whispers and their mission to preserve events exactly as they occurred previously tells me that there is but one reality, otherwise they would not care if things turn out differently in another timeline." -- the 'singularity' event (name of the zone of the final fight) essentially created the timeline split when king whisper was vanquished, so prior to this, there were was only 1 singular timeline (perhaps not 'timeline split' but for different timelines to become accessible as such)
"Some people say that there are now two Sephiroths in the FF7 world, but I believe this to be farcical as well..." -- agree with your para. It's not 'time traveling' as such, but Sephiroth traveling thru and influencing thru those with Jenova cells, hence his first appearance to Cloud in Remake was not corporeal
"For the ending with Zack, ..." -- hmm... I don't agree with your interpretation regarding the chip packet. I think it was such obvious placement that you must logically conclude it's another timeline, and would be a bit petty and cheap for the devs to throw us off that...
"So, in a nutshell, I believe the timeline of FF7 to be one linear continuum, albeit one that sees major alterations, and that the events of the original timeline no longer exist. Until proven otherwise, this is how I will interpret the story.
" -- I reckon the biggest proof point that there MUST be multiple timelines (in FF and I guess time travel as a concept in general) is that the Cloud we know from the Remake is still 'Cloud' even after Zack continues to live / killing King Whisper... essentially the classic issue of 'temporal paradox' when we talk time travel
In other words, if it was just 'one' timeline similar to say Back to the Future, then altering past events (i.e. Zack lives) would render the events we just witnessed no longer in existence (i.e. Cloud wouldn't be who he had been throughout Remake if he killed King Whisper to allow Zack to live, but then doesn't allow Cloud to be who he is in Remake, to have killed King Whisper, to allow Zack to live, etc....). If it was 'one' timeline then having vanquished King Whisper Cloud would just fade away and no longer exist... or not have the Buster Sword... or Aerith wouldn't have met Cloud... etc etc we wouldn't have gone thru the whole adventure in Remake

    • @GeonusKaikun
      @GeonusKaikun 4 года назад

@@tarutso I can see why you'd think Cloud would fade, but nobody has time traveled to prove this would happen. It could well be that the space-time continuum corrects itself by filling in information, however improbable. Cloud's memories would have altered on the spot, with Aerith's being unaffected because her consciousness is immune. Now instead of receiving the Buster Sword and his new identity from a dead Zack, it happened a different way.
I know I'm reaching a bit here, but I really dislike multiple timelines and I hope Square comes up with something more creative.

@@GeonusKaikun I hear you dude. I'm quite anxious about all this potential multiverse stuff and the way I'm thinking about it to quell that anxiety a bit at least until we get the second game is, that what's happened in the original has happened and this is Sephiroth's next attempt at getting what he wants. And our heroes will have to go above and beyond to defeat him once again
I reckon some people including Maximilian Dood are thinking perhaps multiverse and then some type of convergence etc. I reckon they don't go down that route coz it gets way too convoluted, having multiple Clouds, multiple Aeriths etc. I reckon the Zack scene is really a memento for the Aerith in our timeline, in that having defeated King Whisper, there is a Zack out there who may be alive but they can never meet (unless in the lifestream of course), hence Aerith having sensed Zack is not happy or elated at all
Potential major spoiler from other FF7 canonical works / novellas etc:
I heard this from the Dropped Frames podcast where they mentioned that Cloud could be like a sort of a 'horcrux' for Sephiroth. In that, as long as people 'remember' Sephiroth, then he can materialise through them. So perhaps the anticipated 'death' of our heroes is not Aerith or Tifa, etc, but Cloud??? How crazy would that be dude...

    • @GeonusKaikun
      @GeonusKaikun 4 года назад

@@tarutso Whoa, that would be crazy! Imagine if Cloud, the main protagonist, just dies midway through the saga. We'll all be like, "What?"
One sticking point for me is that FF7 is now becoming too much like FF8. While I love both games, they are distinct, and will ever be grouped together because they mark the new generation of Final Fantasy games that came out after the jump to 3D. That's why you hear so many people talking about FF7 and FF8 in the same breath, and even hoping that this will yield a remake for the latter.
Now with time travel, the two games with too many similarities will be even more similar to one another. They've already turned Cloud's character into something too close to Squall's in this iteration, playing up his "not interested" attitude to the level of Squall's "whatever."
That's a concern of mine that I bet most people don't think of, at least not consciously.

    • @tarutso
      @tarutso 4 года назад

@@GeonusKaikun To clarify the horcrux thing, this isn't just a random thought the guys had,. It's based on some short passages called Lifestream White/Black in the novellas (?) which talk about how Sephiroth needs Cloud to continue to live (which blew my mind and explains why Seph esp in AC and Remake has a huge hard on for Cloud all the time and say shit like "run, you need to survive, etc")
Re FF7 and FF8 blurring together, a few points on this. I heard the FF8 devs (perhaps Nojima mainly given he was the writer) mentioned they initially wanted to put a lot of Laguna stuff in but was worried players wouldn't have liked that so pared back. Apparently, it turned out that fans loved the Laguna portion and would have loved more. So perhaps this is spurring Nojima in adding more of those types of elements into Remake. I do hope you're right that this doesn't essentially dilute the essence of what made FF7 original so unique - and having read thru some of the dev interviews including those who do the sound/lighting etc, they repeatedly mention respect for the original. Given what we've seen in Remake I'm cautiously optimistic that they know what they're doing
On slightly different note, I was following the streamer 'FF Peasant's' Remake ending discussion stream who just finished the game a few days ago, and he mentioned how FF7 OG was a huge gamble - moving from Nintendo to PlayStation, largest game budget in history, etc - and what we got was a landmark masterpiece. Clearly Square is taking yet another huuuge risk, mainly to do with the concept/theory/direction of the game (as opposed to say more technical/engine/investment risk) and I'm just hoping that this risk is taken for good reasons, and what results is another masterpiece of an experience by the end of this series of games
Re character development - good point re Cloud v Squall, haven't thought about it that way. IMO, even though 2 characters may be somewhat similar, they are still characters in their own right? We know the backstories are drastically different, so hopefully those fundamentals keep them distinct. But given Nojima is at work here, I truly hope he is very very conscious of this, and is developing the characters in a thoughtful way to ensure they are unique and true to fan expectations generally. The fact that he ain't a fucking mopey dude as seen in AC was a huge relief. But dude, I think there are also touches which make Cloud different from Squall (tho maybe perhaps due to technical advancement in Remake) - stuff like that small grin in front of Jessie he had when doing that little jumpey move right after reactor 1, or his quips and stuff w Wedge/Biggs/Jessie which shows some of his immaturity given he was frozen for years and lacked such development
