This is what I fear most about FF7 Remake part 2: that the story will become as convoluted and idiotic as Kingdom Hearts. One of the great things about FF7 and FF in general is that the stories are fairly straightforward without being simplistic. KH however is just a hot mess. Fun to play, but narratively I don’t know what the story writers have been smoking.
It's funny how in the original game, everyone wanted to find a way to resurrect Aerith and now that the remake gives the very possiblity that Aerith might not die, everyone hates it.. LOL
Well I didn't want her to die while playing. But I loved it. From a storytelling point of view that was amazing and even needed. FF7 wouldn't have been FF7 with Aerith surviving, would it?
@@TheRedCapesClan Honestly the twist of it not being a faithful Remake wouldn't have landed quite as powerfully if it was hinted at more strongly than they already did in the title alone.
The fact that they made us NOT want Aerith to die in the first place is the whole point though. It shows that they had a character that we grew to actually care about in that original game. That’s at least why I’m worried about what they’ll do from here. I wouldn’t want them to risk cheapening her death scene.
I think the name Final Fantasy 7 "Remake" wasn't intended to be a "remake" as in remaster of the game, it's a remake of the whole timeline of Final Fantasy 7.
"The reunion at hand may bring joy. It may bring fear. But let us embrace whatever it brings... for they are coming back." This quote from the original trailer makes A lot of sense now.
Except they are not, because as stated by Aerith right before we enter that clusterfuck of an ending, once inside there's no turning back and even us (the characters) aren't going to be the same anymore.
@@BritishSplendor Precisely. "Why I was hesitant" is pretty much the devs screaming we were hesitant to remake this in fear of pissing off the fans. Well I know one way to not piss us off, don't fuck with the story and that they did. I would have been perfectly ok with the whispers being left out, and staying true to the original with more things flushed out like they did then end after the highway boss saying "the journey will continue".
@@ppmguire god, wouldn't that have been beautiful. honestly, it would have been perfect. i would have felt so fulfilled and satisfied. but nomura is involved, we'll never have nice things again so long as he gets to touch final fantasy with his filthy hands.
to be fair aerith death is beyond played out. we've had 20 years to digest it.. we could watch aeriths death in 10k and it wouldn't have the same impact as it did 20 years ago.
@@xxSpike1989xx Yeah, that bit about "change ourselves" IE maybe now it's a branching story and there's the possibility of having Aerith NOT die? What would that do to the story?
I think that the Zack scene was just to show to us that from now on events can unfold in a different way. In a different timeline Zack survived, in the og both he and Aerith died, in the Remake timeline who knows what will happen. Maybe they'll bring in everyone, maybe they won't. I'd love to see an updated version of the og game as well, but with this ending I now have so many questions, expectations and anticipation for what's to come. It's no longer familiar waters we're sailing in and it honestly is exciting. I'm practically hyped up for a game that hasn't been announced yet.
I personally think that because they destroyed fate, the ripple went forward and backward in time , or at least backwards in time where the whispers intervened to make sure came to pass was erased. Meaning he is now alive somewhere in the timeline they walked into by challenging fate. We can't assume he is dead or it's a different timeline because there are little things different. Just have to wait and see, though it doesn't hurt to speculate as we are all doing.
sadly it all wrong with i learned not to long ago the devs want the whispers on the OG game and they are in the ff7 lore. it the black stuff coming out of seph hands in AC. which means they are do as they told you they would, they said think of it as expanded story with all ff7 lore in it.
Zack is dead and will be dead in the remake that ending was cloud having a flash back in the next part we will play as zack in the past zack will not ve alive in the present idk how people are missing that or dont get it yet dont get your hopes up zack will not be alive
@@JesusIsELOHIM The more I think about it the more I think Zack is still dead and its like you said a flashback (although I think it's Aerith sensing, not literally seeing, Zack due to her connection with the lifestream - the visual representation is just for us). He is injured and its just starting to rain - when he died in CC it was pouring down. I think its just going to play out a little differently with Zack succumbing to his injuries just moments after that scene we saw fade away instead of being gunned down by the 3 new Shinra soldiers that showed up after the big showdown in CC - but he is still going to die in the pouring rain, pass off the Buster Sword to Cloud so that he can dull the edge that Angeal and Zack tried so hard to keep sharp, and Cloud is still going to build up his false memories.
I think a lot of people aren’t understanding that they did this in order to create the same emotions people had when they first played the game. They’ve said that future instalments will still closely follow the original plot, and given what a fantastic job they did of that in this game I feel assured they’ll continue. Sure other prequels and sequels haven’t been super well done up to this point, but judge this game by this game, not by other things they’ve done. On top of that, they’ve now managed to show us that there will still be some surprises along the way, what is the best way they could recreate the tragedy of aerith’s death? By telling us it might not have to happen, by giving us hope.
Breaking the 4th wall as they've done here does the anything BUT make you feel emotions as you did in the original. It completely takes you out of the story/world and makes it impossible to invest in. What meaning does a death have when you know there are just 20 others where it doesn't?
Of course they’re going to say that. They also said this was going to be a “remake.” Why would they say “oh yup things are going to be different with the next game”? That would ruin any surprises they have in store for us.
@@GOHST13ly And what about new players? people who waited for the remake to experience FF7 for the first time and paid 80$ for it. Who is supposed to be happy with this except Crisis Core fans purely cause they want more Zack regardless of what it does to the original story. They didnt make this remake only for old fans. So yeah if it's not a remake but a different timeline sequel OF COURSE they should've branded it as such.
Why are people so mad about the remake? Not to mention the ending doesn't actually prove Zack didn't die it just showed that Zack didn't die at that point for all we know Zacks death is a constant in all timelines regardless of how he dies kind of like in Avengers Endgame Ironmans death or dven just Black Widows death is a set occurance so the fact she died cant be changed. Maybe Zack is meant to die either which way and the remake ending is effectively just him biding his time unknowingly. People who are mad are just against change, it's the same thing with the MCU people are made it doesn't follow the continuity of the comics when it was never meant to as for the Remake sure the expectation was its a remake in the way of copy paste the story and just fix mechanics. I don't recall prior to the remakes release or during marketing and such they ever said it's a true remake I think people just made an assumption because they saw the word remake and thought "yea same game!!!" even I did when I first saw it, but I love it even more now because it's something new. I don't think it's correct to say "oh the next game is something brand new" because at rhe end they are still following the same story line they are still going to go defeat sephiroth and Cloud still has a personality disorder the remake didn't take all that away what the remake did is change some actions the crew might make in the following game. They will still defeat Sephiroth but how they defeat him is going to be different
12 year old me would’ve been happy at the prospect of Aerith getting a chance to live, 29 year old me knows though that that’s not the reason why the game stuck with me for so long 😔 smh
If you watch the end of part one Aerith opens a portal to a different time line... In this timeline Zack fair has survived unlike in the original ff7.... In the boss fight against the arbiters who are basically trying to repeat the events in the original ff7 however cloud defeated the arbiters and fate itself plus the flash forwards of the future they saw in the boss fight to which red13 replied that this vision would be the result if they failed to defeat the arbiter but they were successful and they have denied their original fate so the story is bound to change and I really hope aerith survives......this first part has given me hope and so have the words of the developers I hope she survives..
Mighty Bro yes I know, I clocked it last night, im missing what you’re trying to get at here? Im saying that there’s a whole lot of character development that won’t happen now that they’ve opened up this whole possibility of different timelines and having characters like Aerith survive now. And remake vs remastered.. there’s very little difference in these words and they still give off the wrong impression about what this game really is: it’s re-imagined. I think people are allowed to feel a bit cheated by this
Tbh I'm fine with it. So many people are gonna be mad about this, but Im part of the group that says if you like the original so much, at least Square is still validating it by making it mandatory for you to know the story so you can tell when the party is defying fate in the new series. And yeah, people are gonna have mixed feelings about if aerith dies or not, but I guess I'm just so used to alternate timelines in other games and anime that it really doesn't bother me anymore cause you can just pick whatever time line you want to be "your" canon. You like the og canon where she gets impaled then that's fine, but if someone else likes the time line where she somehow lives, then that's fine too. I will also say that while I know people are disappointed this isn't a faithful remake, I thought Nomura said they wouldn't ever remake the same game twice so that basically gave it away that when they confirmed the remake it was gonna be different to a point.
I totally agree with you! I for one really love the concept of alternate timeline/parallel universe. It's exciting to see where the new story is taking us while in the same time it doesnt negate the glory and tragedy that took place in the original
There is one canon, it already exist and it's pretty damn well explore and the reason why we love FF7 some much, don't get me wrong, I like the remake a lot, but if it's going to be a retold history of the original game with a lot of changes in the crucial parts of it, they should say it, because i was expecting a remake of the game i felt in love with a long time ago. So it' just make sad in the End. Even thought like I said, I love the game.
FTGrimm Yea the whole first 95% of the game is a remake with a few changes and then the other 5 is for the next game. Where it won’t be called remake most likely.
@@ftgrimm1016 it is called a remake for a reason. SE is going far beyond the definition of it in the gaming. Let's be fair, the fact it is assumed that the story remains the same doesn't mean that this is what every remake should have. You just accepted the idea that videogame remakes are just modernized same experience because that's how market in general gives it to you.
They said it way back during interviews, that the original story is intact but this isn't actually a remake of FF7 it's a reimagining of it. That means they were going to make lots of changes while keeping what originally was intact. they all know what was in store for them more or less but now things are going to change. I have multiple ports of the original so after just finishing FF7R, makes me more than ever want to go back and play FF7 og. I love getting to have more of the game told in a new way by the OG creator of the game, cannot wait for more!
You missed " i miss the steel sky" that´s a reference to Crisis Core, when Aerith felt more safe in the slums than under the real sky. It was less troublesome then.
@@riccardinofuffoloakafuffy3388 it was very intentional. And saying i hate this sky doesnt hit as hard as her missing midgar as soon as she leaves. imo at least. I would call it awful at all
I’m pretty sure Zack is still dead in the timeline we play, and that we were seeing an alternate timeline where he survives. So in our game world, cloud has still absorbed some parts of his personality and will still have a mental break about it, like in the original. I think his “survival” was just a fan servicey way for Square to show the impact of fate changing. But idk. I guess there could be shenanigans where Zack and alt timeline cloud meet the group we play, but I hope not. I hope the timelines remain separate. I also think the sephiroth we faced was an alternate timeline sephiroth, but that’s a whole different can of worms.
with Nomura putting his turd hands on it you never know my predictions Aerith lives, Zack lives no one dies, if someone does they just spooky ghost time travel bullshit it back to life because Nomura can't stand the concept of loss
Thank you someone else also thinks that biggs looks like Charlie sheen. Everytime I saw him in a cutscene I was like you really look like Charlie sheen haha.
@@Lykon His involvement in the original plot was quite limited - he was principally a concept artist - and ultimately Sakaguchi had final authority. You know, the guy responsible for pretty much every golden age FF.
Just an opinion, but perhaps it wasnt a significant enough change that would alter the entire course of fate itself. Or perhaps it was just in there for some comedic relief.
If you beat Sephiroth while wearing the Enfeeblement Ring in Hard mode, there's a bonus scene after the credits roll that shows Chadley taking off his VR headset and winking at the player from his parent's basement.
My insane theory: The Sephiroth we see here is actually Advent Children Seph going back in time to jumpstart the Reunion plan faster, with the Whispers trying to stop him. The Whispers fail, makes AC Seph stronger by giving him the power to defy fate and now destiny is broken.
Maybe. It would make a lot of sense for them to explore Zack throughout the game, given that Crisis Core details the events that ultimately lead up to Cloud becoming who he is, so I imagine it would also make sense to merge Advent Children into the game, telling the full story from a total 'canonical' perspective, from the very beginning, to the very end. Comprehensive and definitive, ultimately wrapping up the franchise in a way that the original fans and newcomers can both understand.
Also possibly making the story vulnerable to becoming a disgusting convoluted mess and a mediocre disappointment. They might find themselves walking a very fine line, but it all remains to be seen, so who knows.
I have the same feeling... He is to much the same like Advent Children... And Look, Cloud Never to the end Forgive himself, death of Zack and Aerith... So Maybe He will be have time to reapir it... One think is Sure... This will be also EPIC
I honestly really liked the surprise twist in the end. We have to take into account that this game only covers Midgar. We also do not know the whole story of why Sephiroth seems to know about the whispers and the process behind altering and changing the timeline. I feel like we will still see the other places that we remember from the old game, but maybe, we will see New Midgar rebuilt like how Reeve originally intended it to be. It seems like he wants to rebuild Midgar to coexist with the planet in a way that it is not harming it instead. I know purists out there wanted the original FFVII game to stay just the way it was. The remake, to me, seemed to accomplish just that; reimagining the characters and places that we were all familiar with, while at the same time, making us want to clamor and find out more about the game because of the new timeline that was established. Final Fantasy VII REMAKE to me is a fitting name for this game because the the characters are remaking fate and destiny itself into something we fans do not even know about.
can't agree more. to my eyes, REMAKE is more likely to be the title of this game and not an indication of bringing the exact same story back with modern tech. Final Fantasy VII : REMAKE but i still feel bad for the purists who wanted the identical thing. they at least deserved a fitting remaster after all these years.
if Sephiroth did somehow manage to travel back in time, then why bother with Shinra? why make his presence known to cloud? sure, he needs Jenovas body for the reunion, but why stick around for cloud? if anything, he made better progress in the original by getting Jenova and leaving. by staying around, he now has Cloud even closer on his trail. also if he is from the future, he knows where the Black Materia is now. just send some clones and take it up to the crater. he doesnt even need cloud now, if thats the case. adding a concept like time travel just adds so many plot holes. which makes me wonder if this even is time travel. i did hear a theory that its not Sephiroth, but Aerith that traveled back. which then wouldnt cause the plot holes i mentioned. which would also explain alot of her strange behaviors throughout the story, and why she became so assertive towards the end, acting almost as if she were the party leader after the final fight. but even then, shes a Cetra, her power comes from communing with the planet. she cant draw from that energy within Midgar. (see the prison dialog in the Shinra Labs in the original. The Cetra part of the Shinra tour in the remake hints at some of this info, since the remake cut the prison scene.) she shouldnt be able to do some of the things she does in this game, like opening dimensional rifts. even if they are on the outer skirts of Midgar, both FF7 and Advent Children show that the land is dead for miles around the city. so you could say that shes the one with ulterior motives. but i just chalk it all up to bad writing. because any kind of time travel doesnt explain why the entire last last few hours messes with almost every character. for example, how does Hojo now recognize cloud? hes one of hundreds, if not thousands of experiments. cloud was noone special to him. its not until cloud gives sephiroth the black materia that Hojos memory even starts to get jogged. that entire last act jumped the shark in more than just plot, but character development too. none of it makes sense within the context of the original. thats why i dont think this is a time travel plot, i think its just another spin off like kingdom hearts. familiar characters and story, but definitely not the same. if youre on board with that, more power to you, i hope it turns out well. but to me, changing that much, alters the entire story setup from Before Crisis all the way to Dirge of Cerberus. it doesnt even lay within the continuity, it doesnt seem like it wants to. which is fine, because it doesnt mess with what is a great set of stories.
Why would ppl want to play a game they already played before and know everything that happens?? That's stupid, might as well play the original game smh. There'd be no point for them to make a complete remake of a game to the last detail, spend tons of money, upgrading the animation and art, etc...and the whiners shouldn't want that either. Who wouldn't want something new and fresh that they haven't seen yet?! It's moronic to buy the same game again like it's new when it's just a modernized version but everything is the same and the story hasn't changed lol. That's like marvel remaking spiderman over and over but with the same actors, same plot, etc..., who wants to keep seeing the same shii (are ppl that obsessed and fanatic over FF that they'd really buy a game that was already created just to see the new art since the story & plot is the same)?! They should be happy that they aren't getting ripped off and buying the same game, and getting new surprises and plots and stories that they never seen and can look forward to seeing what happens, journey along with the characters, see their favorite characters go through different scenarios and dangerous situations, new events and newer threats and new background information!! They're literally getting a favor, a game company that actually is giving them their money's worth!! I find it hilarious people are mad because they wanted it to be EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE OG, like huh, how stupid are they to want that and waste money when you could just play the other fucking game smh!! People truly are dumb as fuck and deserves to be wiped out, if only FF was real and humanity no longer existed. I'd be pissed buying a game I already played before just with better graphics lol, like oh a remake, that sounds awesome, get to play the game again when I already have it ahahaha. Idiots smh!!
Right. I'm happy that now they change things. Give hope for the ones Who died in the original to stay alive in the new one. (I really hope they don't sacrifice Tifa, cloud or anyone else how ever) And it's called remake for a reason not final fantasy remastered. Sure is would be nice to have a remastered version too, but it's to late for that. They put so much work and effort into this. People should just take it and enjoy it.. I usually don't comment but I need to get this off my chest..
Did you catch when sephiroth said to cloud "seven second till the end, I wonder what you will when you have the power". THAT scene in the original lasted seven seconds from drop to fall. This game is just magic if you played the original.
I gave four days of my life to that game. There were many aspects that I loved, several I didn't like, but on the whole it was an incredibly positive experience--until the ending. Now I have been insulted and disillusioned by a story to a degree which I did not think was possible.
I can identify with that. I've been pissed at that outcome for four days straight. I go to bed with it, and I wake up with it. It's quite unproportional, since it's "just a game", but that's how I feel.
@@SpoonfishLee It's not "just a game," though, is it? If the purpose of art is make you feel something profound then video games are undeniably an art form. Therefore, the strength of out feelings towards them is entirely appropriate.
@peachesgalore7689, @SpoonfishLee I resonate with both of your sentiments exactly. FF7R is brilliant in combat, variety, and (most) of its filler content--I'd say 90% good, 10% bad. I really hated the lack of urgency in stopping the plate falling and us not seeing a blood-filled Shinra building after realizing Sephiroth was there--because I guess blood is not allowed in this game or something--and of course this so-called ending. I am going to take a few deep breathes, knowing I'm not the only one frustrated by the big story revamps, and come back to this game in a couple days to work on Hard difficulty. Thanks for sharing.
I’m in the same boat, never been so disappointed by a piece of fiction my whole life. It’s so weird too seeing more and more people finish the game every day, with this same feeling.
I was very close to tears after realising after years and years of wanting a remake and then finally getting one, Square Enix decided to just lie through their teeth to everyone and do this to us instead. I completed it on the 6th April and I'm still angry.
No, what she means is SE is taking everything that made FF7 meaningful and watering it down to some clichéd rainbow & sunshine story because of fan service.
@@unclesuave You serious bro? Biggs, Wedge, Zack, and possibly Jessie (her gloves) are alive, and now are hinting that even Aerith might stay alive. So they already are heading toward that direction. It's true we have no idea what's to come but keeping everyone alive, having literal sunshine & rainbow P1 ending and introducing multiverse and timetravel is corny and dumb & will definitely result in overcomplicating and massive plotholes.
Meta-sequel is more like where it's going. Which I'm fine with, but a pure reboot wouldn't acknowledge the past iteration, I think. EDIT: nowhere in my comment am I saying it's okay that we were deceived. I love the direction, but think it's stupid that people weren't primed for it.
It's a sequel that repeats the same events of the original with the whispers thrown in for like most of the game. Towards the end they go on full sequel.
I'm actually fine with the direction they are going with. I want it to feel new. I'll always love the original, but I noticed when it comes to remakes in general now a days, people are always up to criticizing everything and nostalgia clouds our eyes. I think it was a notable thing with SE. They built up the nostalgia factor on purpose. In a way, the people playing that played the original are the Whispers. We know Aerith dies, we know the planet will be saved. We know every moment, and truth some probably felt anger more towards the whispers because they were there every moment, preserving everything. It's no different to how OG fans act. To preserve every memory of something because its what helped define us as we got older. But now, we are in uncharted territory. The path is no longer set, and leaves us open to journey past what we know. We can experience new things now and be left surprised.
So don't do a remake them. Invocation and imagination is far from dead. grow some balls and do your own game instead of hijacking audience out from nostalgia. I'll never excuse developers using remake to safely do their next game.
@@domx7zero157 sad news for you, I don't care about IGN, considering some people pay for good reviews. I'm just not closed minded. 1 for 1 shot would be boring
@@Sampawende “From here on out, we’re not drastically changing the story and making it into something completely different than the original,” “Even though it’s a Remake, please assume that FF7 will still be FF7 as usual.” From a Kitase interview, don't believe all the fan theories on youtube.
Here's the thing...there are references to Crisis Core throughout the entire game, most are very small, such as the Banora White (Dumb Apples) advertisements on the walls in the bombing mission. They also reference Kunsel in the Shinra tower. Never mind the faithful recreation of the dialog, down to the letter, that Zack has with himself before his fateful battle with Shinra. The thing I noticed. Aerith is standing on the exact spot that Zack died when you see the ghost of Zack and Cloud walk through. Aerith responds to something that Zack says in his dying breath. The line iirc correctly was, "That girl. She said the sky scared her. I find it, liberating. Those wings, I want them too." When Aerith states ,"I miss the steel sky," it's almost as if she's responding to that line of dialog. Maybe this is the planet telling her of Zack's fate and showing her that the reason she see's so much of Zack in Cloud is because him and Zack are very directly connected. The other thing I noticed is, despite all these, let's call them alternate timeline events, is that despite this, Cloud still has the Buster Sword in the final cut scene which would indicate that somehow he received it. Maybe Zack dies anyways and there's precedent in the story itself. The final cut scene is not an in engine cut, because if it were it would have showed Cloud with the sword I used during the final fight, which was the Hard Edge. They did this for a reason. Note that fate locks Wedge in when the plate falls, but he lives. That is not part of the original plot. He later is trapped by the whispers in the Shinra tower and it's more than heavily implied he died this time. This tells me that the whispers can fail at their goal of preserving the events, or even, if it's not a failure to do so, maybe they pick and choose which events to preserve. Also note, that the whispers make no effort to stop Cloud and company from re-entering Sector 7, which is another plot beat that is entirely different from the original. There's also the whole injuring Jessie so that Cloud is invited on the Sector 5 mission. In the original plot, she is very much there. There's even a conversation between her and Cloud about the IDs where she admits that it was her fault and Clouds ID specifically that caused the alert on the train. It seems to me their ability to intervene is limited because, regardless, the sector 5 mission would be different by sidelining Jessie. It's also important to note that Wedge is also on the Sector 5 mission in the original game as well as you see him disguised on the train with Biggs and Jessie. Also, why would Sephiroth delay the final battle between himself and Cloud? That's odd, if fate were truly broken, why would he choose to delay their final confrontation when he could have easily finished it at the edge of creation when Cloud denies him. Even Sephiroth, to some extent, has reverence for fate. Nomura, is a messy convoluted writer, there's no denying it, but he's rarely lazy. There's often a point to everything he does. Whether or not its satisfying, is another thing entirely.
Cloud has the bustersword at the end, because zach is still dead in his timeline. Zach surviving is a completely different timeline, which was affected by cloud defeating the whisperers. The only thing I don't know....did the party return to their original timeline after "winning" or were they transported to another one? I really loved this remake, but am kinda worried about it becoming super convoluted in the next games.... that's why I never played kingdom hearts. Too convoluted and I don't care about Disney and it's weird connection to the game
@@X5J2UY It looks like they did. Because we see slums, Biggs and Marline. In the end we also see what happens in two timelines. Remake - the team is overlooking the city while in Alternate timeline - Zack and Cloud approach it. At least that's what I think. Maybe there will be a spin-off game where Zack and Cloud work as mercs.
Thomas we know for sure there are 2 different time lines now. Now theres gonna be room for more story. In opinion clouds universe is my favorite than any other universe ( not saying any of the other games weren’t good ) but I would wanna see more of clouds friends go on more adventures and I would wanna see the side where Zack does live and how a new story could be created.
Why would Sephiroth delay the final battle between himself and Cloud? Because he needs him to retrieve the Meteor Materia and take it to his sleeping self up north.
Loved everything about this remake, was so addictive. Very excited to see what is going to happen in next parts. The only thing needed is iron patience in waiting for them ^-^
Hopefully modding will be able to do it one day. I mean, even with minor tweaking you can make this game closer to the original one. Just remove all the scenes with the flying di**s, adjust some dialogue and you are good to go. Even the extended Sephiroth was not THAT bad.
I don't mind them changing things but I do mind NOMURA changing things. When has he ever stuck a landing? When has he even had a landing at all? KH is still going on. The fact that there's a twist at all is cool, but the chances of this ending in not-a-mess are slim.
Pretty much. My one true fear in all this. Its a bold, exciting choice..........until you notice who's behind the wheel. Then you want to get off Nomura's Wild Ride but their are no brakes and you're trapped, bound to sit and watch as the vehicle of the journey you are on, is about to careen head long off a cliff.
8:46 This scene is very interesting because in Japanese version, REDXIII says "This is the scene we are about to throw away". I think the nuance is a little bit different.
Pity. There are a lot more twisted translations all throughout the game. Sometimes totally changing the personality of the characters. Sometimes just plain wrong.
Yeah, I use the Japanese voice with English subtitles and what I've noticed is they don't really translate the Japanese script to English but use the English script as the subtitles.
I was loving this game up until the last two chapters. Now I feel conflicted and confused. I didn't like the whispers and all this fate stuff. I would have preferred if they did it more like capcon did with resident evil.
That feeling means you know what they did here was a bad move and ruined the experience. It did for me as well. They lied to us for years. And this game was not justifed at a 60 price tag for only 30 hours of game and they didnt actually expand much other then filler hallway fights.
@@stryder8460 To quote another commenter, if I come to your house and shit on your dining table, I am _also_ not afraid. There's nothing particularly admirable about that quality. The game is about as 'mind blowing' as an r/im14andthisisdeep post.
Honestly, coming from having a sense of dread that biggs, jessie, and wedge, who were characters i've grown to love, were going to inevitably die made me wish the story deviated from the original. The fact that they went on to survive (fingers crossed for wedge still) made me glad that its going to be a reboot in later installments and that it was addressed in a meta way (like bravely default). That and if the next game's as good as this one, then i'll be happy with whatever vision square has in store.
@@OKG2000 well Biggs shows up in the end of remake. Considering that Whispers were involved in the process when Jessie passed out just like Biggs there's a big chance that she survives as well. As of Wedge, I'm pretty sure he's ok.
Well said Lord Genbu! Though that scene in Shinra tower where the whispers seemingly attack Wedge and push him back then the screen goes dark and you hear glass shatter, sorta makes me think they made sure he did die the way he was supposed to, by falling to his death.
I actually disagree here, not because I am heartless I really like those characters but because I am really hoping they aren't changing this to an "we can save everyone, happy ending" type story. I honestly liked that characters we enjoyed died, it made the game more mature and nuanced I felt when confronted with these deaths. If we can save Aerith and Zack, okay that's cool I am open to change...but honestly I am hoping there is some sort of price paid. I don't want this to become another Kingdom Hearts where everyone survives with the power of friendship lol. Maybe it is just me.
@@OKG2000 On a way to a smile, case Tifa reveals that pretty much the only Avalanche survivors were her and Barrett. It is stated she lost dear friends (including Aerith), and neither of them are said to be alive. Else Barret and Tifa would've met up with them during the years prevoius to AC.
I just finished this game a couple of hours ago and yeah, I'm definitely torn about the direction this game is heading. In one hand, I agree with what Aoife said that the main reason I love the original FFVII is the story and how it gives me an emotional experience I haven't really got from other games. To deviate from that story in a blank slate would mean that it's not the thing I love, yet it's heavily using elements from that thing and that makes me really anxious. It made me realize how much I'm attached to the story of the original game. In the other hand, I honestly think the team has done something really special with this remake... the gameplay, the interaction between the characters, the music (my god, the music!) are excellent all the way through. Even the new added things, especially chapter 4 with the Avalanche proved to me that they are at least capable to tug the heartstrings like the original. IF they're able to bring all that to the new direction they wanna take, then it could be interesting. A possibility of something new but with similar emotional experience of the original is at least a little bit exciting. But then again, that whole chapter 4 thing is possible because the original narrative still allows it to happen. If they're going with completely new storyline and doesn't have the original narrative as the guideline, then it'll be pretty much a fanfic. Ugh, my head hurts trying to think about all this.
@@Neezy2 Oh I know what you mean, that's one aspect that I'm anxious-but-excited about. Again, this is probably just wishful thinking in my part, but if they could manage to do the same quality as this first part in the next one, I'm kinda intrigued what story alterations they could come up with and how they would tell it. I think if there's one thing I'm most worried about is whether they will preserve the themes present in the original one. Like for example, for me one of the most poignant themes in the original story is how the characters are dealing with their losses. How you cope with it is the difference between being consumed by it or coming out stronger because of it. With this first part, we now know that the original fate of Wedge, Biggs, and Zack have been undone. But their demise *was* crucial to the development of certain characters. If this is gone, then the affected characters wouldn't have their story arc, unless there would be 'substitute' hurdles for them to overcome. Not that I'm rooting for tragedies, but it's one thing to ponder about.
for me i play this game with a different mindset. Since like the way its heading... Even from the start its hinted as a different game from the OG. Its already shown that the world is not the same even before you play it.. things like avalanche is a organizations instead of just Barret party, Whispers is first time met with aerith, jessie biggs and wedge die a lot earlier in originals. the bombing of MR7 is not an inside job from original... so is not faithful even from start and even as a demo... so by then i know its different from original people mad since they expect same game.. but i like it and love it.. treat it as marvel multiverse... both spiderman earth 616 peter parker (amazing spiderman) and peter parker ultimate universe are canon but storyline different, don't need to be afraid of the changes..
The question is, how is a player ment to traverse such a huge overworld? It will be FFXV all over again with a car. We all know how that shit turned out... 80% car riding, 20% gaming.
@@Snoken127 I honestly hope they skip the huge bland traversing of the original (my least favorite part of the OG FF7) I would rather have a world map with fast travel to different highly detailed locations and cities a bit like the galaxy map in say Mass Effect I would take that over a huge empty open world any day and i hope it is the way they go.
It's probably gonna be open sectors. Like Kalm, Chocobo Farm and Midgar Zolem/Mythril Mines being one large section, then have Fort Condor and Junon as well as Yuffie's woods. Something like that makes the most sense because 1. That open world in the original is barren as hell and if people take of the nostalgia goggles they'll realize that's the case and 2. That would be a loading nightmare, with probably lots of moments of slow walking and talking sections to hide the massive amount of loading required. And that's if they choose to do open sectors. It could just continue the Final Fantasy X linear sections leading between locations that they did in this remake as well, and that's the one I honestly expect to happen as disappointing as that might be.
That's a very good point actually. They had 23 years to change and add whatever they wanted through BC, CC, AC, DC and even Last Order. For once, I would have loved if they kept it the same... but oh well.
It is believed that they where building things up for an FF7-2 but it never happened. By the looks of it they seem to be combining that idea with remaking the game.
@@braddl9442 Well it can be argued that they kinda are, remake the game while also having it work as a sequel of sorts. Two birds with one stone. Regardless this is what they're going with I just hope we get good games out of it.
@@christianlopez707 NO, they marketed this as a faithful remake with some expanded content. They should not have dont this. This was pure sleazy bait and switch. And they did everything to hid the fact they were doing major changes until launch date. If not for the Pandemic they would have gotten away with lying to everyone. This is not defensible.
@@braddl9442 You do know they showed the whispers in trailers right? If that didn't give of the impression that they where gonna change things, what would?
I am 100% with you on this Aoife. I had the exact same hopes and feelings about the ending, especially because 90 percent of the game were near perfect. It's definitally a bitter aftertaste for me, and I am not one of those fans who can't handle even a tiny change from the original, I am actually really open for adjustments to fit a more modern and fleshed out game. Let's see what the future brings.
Im so happy they are going a new route for this version. I care more about seeing the characters again and now i wont go into the game knowing everything thats gonna happen. The end made me realize that im definitely open to a new direction this time around
Exactly how i feel. Plus, I really hate the idea of paying 60+ dollars in who knows how many different parts, just to get the same plot and storyline from the old game that I’ve already played many times. This one feels like a fresh experience and like a total new game! I felt so sad and annoyed when Jessie, Biggs and Wedge (especially Jessie, I really wanted Cloud to pipe her during that pizza date 😏) died since they did a better job to develop their characters a bit more in this one, but was very happy when I saw them surviving at the end bc of the gang beating fate. It’s such a cool concept to play with familiar characters but not knowing if they’re going to die for sure. They should also be very careful with how they approach this in order to not mess this up since it’s going to be a new game. In a perfect world, they should make this game with the options of having it exactly as the original as well as with this new timeline. Idk how but if somehow they can still pull this off, everyone will be happy. But I don’t mind playing a new game since my money will feel well spent as opposed to paying lots of $ just for mainly HD graphics.
@@NoLongerGrilling if biggs and zach are confirmed alive, as we know wedge already is, it kinda misses the whole message of the original, about death and learning to live without loved ones. I don't mind the changes too much, but the core message of the original should be kept intact.
Yes. They are an analogy for the fanbase that want to keep the storyline intact. The Whispers actively try to maintain the original order of the story but the characters (developers) want to deviate from that and tell something slightly different. It's pretty meta.
@@GaryMcAnim Or it represents the divide in the player base between those who like the story as is and those that wanted to do stuff like... saving Jessie and Aerith.
I said this as a joke when they attacked Seventh Heaven to make sure Jessie broke her ankle and Cloud went on the second reactor mission. I stopped laughing when it turned out to be true.
@@andreseh87 it will just prevent Aerith from dying in the middle of the story. Then in the final moments of the final installments she may realize she has to sacrifice herself (or maybe Cloud will, who knows). I think the writers' objective was tokeep her around until the end, not necessarily to keep her from dying.
@@swalhal3701 if that the case, then that will be awesome. My hope is, with Fate gone, in part 2 we can get branching path where our decision and action can determine who live or who die. We can stay with original plot or new plot.
I'm overjoyed and enjoyed this re-imagining of the game, and can not wait to see where our new path takes us. Also, not only is Biggs alive, but on the nightstand next to him is Jessie's Glove
I see a lot of people hating on the ending but I'm with you I really loved the whole thing. They managed to include almost every single little tidbit I wanted from the original.
After killing highway robot Me: Nice now the highway will end and we will be out of midgar Game throws a huge breaking immersion/logic monster at me. Me: What the hell is going on in here!!????? After game ends. Me: ...
Couldn’t be more true. The EXACT feeling I had. I thot maybe they would through a teaser of what part 2 would be like with the world but boy was I wrong.
So when I finished the ending, I thought that was an incredibly epic fight and when I realised it was a kingdom hearts-eque fight did put a bit of a downer on it. However this project does have the original writing team involved here and this is the story they want to tell. As such, I'm going to play the next few titles and judge this accordingly but for the time being, I want to be patient. I dont want to accuse them of lying to us, because they have said that they were changing the story to accommodate the Remake. In saying that though, I would like to throw out a theory and opinion. The original did mention in passing with Bugenhagen that the lifestream preserves the flow of time and with Sephiroth seemingly taking the power of "destiny" from the arbiter of fate. It would seem that the events of the original game will still play out but now Sephiroth knows everything that happen (and that's how he can kill Aerith and do other-fuckery things). Now the team must fight against a Sephiroth that knows the future, not too unlike the original tbh, only now they've explained how he can see/predict the future and be all-powerful. With Zack being an alternate timeline, it's very possible but it could just be to emphasise it was in the past? Perhaps Stamp had a redesign after the war. Even-so, as they pass by each other the rain begins to fall and that would indicate that's when Zack dies. Crisis Core retconned Zacks death into something much much bigger than it was, he was jumped by a couple of soldiers. I believe this will still happen. How else would Cloud have the sword and memory problems. Shortly after they "walk past each other" a fatigued Zack gets gunned down by a lucky trooper and they leave Cloud to die as they assume he will. I have to believe they wont be changing the story too much, obviously there will be new elements to the story but the main narrative must be intact as they have already done with Part 1. Either way, I loved the game and hope it continues to be this quality through each subsequent release!
I agree with you and also I want to add to what you've said: I believe their choice to go this route is because they know the fans of the story already know what is going to happen. They chose to do this so that the story will feel new again, and so that the scenes we remember will surprise us again. And also the title "Remake" sort of gave it away for me, and when I finished the game it got even clearer. They chose to name it "remake" not because it's a remake, but because they are "remaking" the timeline. It's actually pretty clever in some ways. However, I totally get that people are disappointed, I am too in a way because I was expecting a certain story....but I am also super excited to what might happen, what they might change. Because then it's like playing the original all over again. I also cried hysterically over the fact that Zack might be alive....and that he and Aerith might have a happy future together ; o ;
@@StrandedLoner The fans of the original already know and love what happens, but almost the entirety of us, surely, wanted something more akin to a remaster than a profound overhaul of the narrative.
Hello to Aoife, Eurogamer gang, and all super fans. I understand that many of us are confused at some parts of the storyline. It's actually much clearer in the original Japanese dialogue than the english lines written. Not sure if you know about this, but the american translation of the original Japanese dialogue is terrible. Absolutely terrible. It's almost like the translators had no idea what the original lines are supposed to mean, and just wrote their own lines just to fit the scenes and broad story, but effectively changing the characters and meaning of many spoken lines. It's not even localisation, it's more like distortion to fit their own biases. As a result of this blatant disrespect and incompetency, so many of us are confused at many story points. Just a few examples as quoted in this video. At Barrett's scene, Red XIII's line is more accurately translated as "Does Destiny supercede even Death?" It's more of a question pondered out loud than a stereotypical line of exposition by the smartest in the room. On the "glimpse of what will happen _if we fail_ " line. This translation makes the meaning so wrong. The actual line is more like "This is the scenery that we're _throwing away/leaving behind_ ". "Scenery is a literal translation, the meaning is more like "the scenes, the fate that we're leaving behind". As you can see, they're really not trying to actively avoid something . Red XIII was more like describing the consequence of their actions, with no positive or negative connotation. And then there's the translation of "the edge of creation", completely exposing the translator as a believer of creationism. You know how they're like. The original line is literally "the front edge of the world", basically the beginning of the Universe, the Big Bang. And on Sephiroth's "not yet" line, this is again wrong. The original Japanese line is more like "lightweight", basically saying that Cloud is not strong enough. It's not about the timing, it's about Cloud's strength. Let's not forget that at this very moment, Sephiroth is still cocooned somewhere. He still needs Cloud. There are many more lines throughout the entire game, which totally changed the context, meaning, and even the basic personality of the characters. One of the most jarring being Barrett's line after Cloud and Tifa climbed down the air duct at the toilet. The original line is "so the plan is going well". I won't even repeat the blatant distortion here. So, if anyone ever felt any lines seem weird and simply doesn't fit, try looking up for the original line in Japanese and work out the original meaning. Things should be much clearer.
As for the ending, I can totally see the next game becoming something of a multiple ending type of story. If you'd like to preserve the original, you can. If you'd like to save Aerith, you can too. I doubt they will change much of the major beats of the game like the Weapons, Cloud's past, Nibelheim's recollection etc, but it also allows them to drop all the bits that casual fans don't even remember from the original, like (memory not found). I totally agree about the multiple timelines and the unnecessary complexities from it. Good spot of the dog btw, never would have noticed the signifcance by myself. Looking at it from a different interpretation, this is essentially time-travelling and meddling of the timeline, changing the past etc. This is really bothering me. The Feelers (the original term for "Whispers") are basically protecting the timeline, insert your favourite fandom term here, time lords TVA time cops time agents whatever. But still, I'd say the positives outweights the negatives. The potential of what could come, is probably more exciting than the predictability of knowing everything that's to come.
@@JohnSmith-mj8hn I wish the subtitles for Japanese audio actually translated the Japanese dialog instead of close captioning the English lines. Things would be much clearer that way... Anyway, I am personally not too bothered about getting a chance to experience some of my favorite characters in a completely new story based on the original FF7. If there are multiple endings (hopefully not THAT many), I would love to have an option of reliving the OG story as a remaster in the "east ending" and then getting the "good/true" ending based on additional quests/decisions/etc.
@@utube1255 Thanks! Really hope more people would know about this. I'm even seeing some Japanese channels promoting the -translations- distortions as a way to learn English.
im not sure how i feel about the implications of the ending as up until that last few hours i was absolutely in love with the game and the direction it was going and then everything suddenly started changing and i was left confused... then i watched this video and seen the stuff i didnt notice and now im right back to how i felt when they announced the remake was actually coming and not just endlessly teasing us. worried, anxious, fearful of change, ever so slightly hopeful... but im still trying to process my feelings about it. i think based solely off this game alone and implying the changes are interesting and reasonable, im leaning to thinking of it more like a "what if?" storyline. could be this was just them testing the waters so to speak and seeing how the world reacts to the idea of an alternate storyline or something.
There I was, fearlessly battling a mountain-sized manifestation of fate in an alternate dimension, effortlessly launching myself between uprooted streets and buildings as Midgar was ripped apart by a black hole. And to think, just a few hours prior I was crawling through a bathroom ventilation shaft, vulnerable and on edge in a desperate heist to save our captive friend. The weight of thousands of deaths still haunting me. It felt real. In those final scenes I felt the weight of the story evaporate. I couldn’t imagine those characters thrown into such a fantastical situation, neither comprehending or surviving it. The game took on a different genre of fantasy where the rules and tone shifted to one at odds with the rest of the game. It no longer felt real. It was as though a child had picked up the characters as dolls and was smashing them together whilst making magical crashing noises. I was bored, and finished the game less interested in how the story unfolds, whether they deviate from the original plot, or not.
Exactly this. I bet they could have made the exact same story changes, but presented in a more subtle way without the over-the-top obnoxious ridiculousness of it all, and it would be a lot more palatable and acceptable to a lot more people. Get rid of the fucking floating ruins in the sky and unbelievably giant fate-monster and go with something more grounded(literally and figuratively) like the Jenova Dreamweaver arena. Don't have us fight Sephiroth in the sky ruins, do it on the ground outside the gates of Midgar, even if it's otherworldly and stormy and in another "dimension" or whatever, like the "upside-down" from Stranger Things, different but still the same place. Both of those changes would have lead into the beautiful "edge of creation" scene so much more appropriately. Also the fucking Whispers should be more ethereal, they're too solid looking and they stand out way too much through the whole game. I think the TL;DR for all of this is just... Stupid. Anime. Bullshit.
I 100% disagree. They been building up to that point the entire game, or somehow you just missed that. Felt even more real to me when put against impossible odds, the characters reacted in the exact way we know and love.
I was bored and exhausted at the end. Where's our simple little scene at the end of the expressway, then descending to the outskirts of Midgar? No, they had to shit on it didn't they? smh.
@@Scott-M1 I don't really have such fond memories of that little scene. it was just a small minor impact scene for me personally. People keep forgetting they said from the start that FF7 Remake should be thought of as FF7 Reimagining. The majority of the story is going to be in tact but with some details and things are going to be different. IT was never intended to be a 1 for 1 Remake, a super HD remaster. For me personally FF7R ending is far more memorable and exciting and got me stoked for me than the original had, though maybe because now I have to wait for more and the original that was literally just the beginning. Also as they say I'm with them, I love the original, I don't want it to be exactly the same. If I want to play the game I love so much I'll just play the original whether it be my OG FF7 Black label copy, my PS3 copy, ps4 copy, steam copy, or switch copy. FF7R has surpassed my expectations and got me drooling for more.
You literally mentioned that there are multiple timelines going then proceed to say it undermines the ff7 story ? In the timeline that our party is in, zack still died. Nothing has changed for them per say.
But then who’s to not say that, when they stepped into Destiny’s Crossroads, they actually stepped into the timeline where Zack’s alive? Speculation of course, but it’s possible.
still no prove of timelines at all but still saying there are timelines, it make 100 percent sense once your way from wild unproven theories and look at ff7 lore for the answers and everything in this game is in the lore of ff7.
Agreed. I was completely enjoying all of it until the moment the giant Kingdom Hearts whisper thing started giving us glimpses of the future. I thought at first they were giving away too much information, and then suddenly they showed Zack living and I knew immediately something was off and from that point the game had lost me, which is incredibly unfortunate because everything leading up to that point was incredible just to have it blue ball you in the worst possible way.
And you already bought the game 😬 ; Well, this is just Nomura testinv ground for the FF that he is still salty about. This game gives hint on how he may handle verum rex.
Best FF ever and love the changes , I already played the old one I for one am happy it's different and can't wait for more to come without knowing what is coming
Square was never going to satisfy 100% REGARDLESS of how they chose to "remake" the game. I'm actually quite happy and excited (though also a bit nervous) about their ballsy decision. Could potentially lead to a drastically more dynamic storyline in which player choice potentially matters in the final outcome...
"Aerith's not gonna die" was the exact reaction I had to the ending. But I can also see it being a dramatic thing where the whispers stop Cloud from saving her and force that event to happen. It's really up to Square which way they want to go with it. For me, as long as they stay relatively close to the original - visit the same towns, meet the same characters, fight the same bosses for the most part - I'll be OK with it. I'm worried the success of this one is going to make them feel at ease to get really over the top and indulgent with it, but time will tell. I'm certainly not going to preemptively second guess them given the incredible quality they just delivered.
Mike Rentas I do think we will be visiting all of the same locations, and I think the main story beats will still be relatively similar. I’m of the mindset that Zack and Biggs being alive, the changed Stamp, they’re Squeenix’s way of explaining what could’ve been had the characters defied fate earlier in their lives, a visual example of the butterfly effect and, generally speaking, a way to fuck with us as an audience. I’m really hoping those guys stay dead, but I’m totally open to the idea that the characters now know they can potentially affect fate and make a change to the existing timeline. It’ll allow for some new story ideas which could prove interesting. As it stands, the characters are still following their original path, the original timeline, outside of Midgar. Kalm is still the nearest town and it’s the next place they’ll end up, regardless. All that’s new so far is that they know for a fact that they can potentially make a change and stop Sephiroth from doing his shit. So yeah, I don’t think the next parts of the story are going to be totally unknown, but Squeenix have definitely made it clear that things are not going to go the way we think it is. It’s a remake in the grandest sense. It’s worrying for sure but it could end up being something real fuckin neat.
Whispers don't exist anymore because Cloud defeated fate. However, it would be even more gut-wrenching if Cloud made the choice to let Aerith die in this game knowing the events of the original timeline.
@@deviltelletubbie The story cannot follow the same spirit as the original. The fate of the world is already known regardless if it turns out that way or not. It is no longer a lot of things happening creating a story but rather a bunch of stuff happening in between two events. Our characters now don't have any reason to mourn or suffer because they know that they can change everything. In the original when they think the world is doomed because of the meteor is now in question. It is not the desperation of what to do but only how. It doesn't really matter what happens in between any longer as it will always just be about defeating fate and not dealing with the present.
Not a fan of the ending either. Its not really what we wanted in a remake and like you said so much of this game was done really well, thats what we wanted going forwards, familiar scenes recreated. Hopefully they wont change things as much as we fear. I think they may partly be doing this for logistical reasons, to make it easier for them to split the story into 3 (probably) games. The most logical ending for part 2 is at the Northern crater when Sephiroth summons meteor, but to get there they have to create the majority of the games world. Most locations are visited prior to this, afterwards you mostly revisit past areas. This means a hell of a lot of work developing part 2. 'Changing destiny' could allow them to change the order of things and more evenly split the world creation over 2 games. For example, Red XIII's motivation is quite different here than in the original game. In the original he makes it clear he is only going with them until he reaches Cosmo Canyon. Here he is instantly on board with clouds mission. Theoretically this could mean the visit to Cosmo Canyon happens later in the story, part 3 rather than 2. Other things could change around in a similar way. At least I'm hoping this will mean mostly logistical changes and not massive story changes, but we will see. It will be a damn shame if they fuck it up after doing so well on most of this game.
I get what you're saying, its a tool for them to address issues like not wanting to do a world map/overworld etc, and perhaps gear/stat carry over. I fully expect more Wutai + Yuffie depth now. maybe she steals all your gear from the get go in part 2, allowing you to start "empty handed" god knows.
"Hopefully they wont change things as much as we fear" They literally opened a portal to 'outside of the remake'. It's over. Hope you liked the Final Fantasy VII you got, because you're getting Kingdom Fantasy from now on.
Ugh.. I'm an OG player, and this ending really disappoints me. Why fix what's not broken? The original story was great, that's why we all love and admire the game. There was no need to alter the timeline...
Yeah, your closing points pretty much sums it up for me too unfortunately. Nomura is having his way with the property and it is going to turn into another Kingdom Hearts incomprehensible mind f, full of multiple time lines, time jumps, obscure symbolism and cryptic dialogue. There was no clear reason WHY the party were trying so hard to defy the arbiters of fate. They were actually given just as many reasons to NOT defy them given how much the arbiters helped them along the way. Just a cheap way to keep Aerith alive imo. Fans are going to be out for blood if they keep her alive. As much as we all love the character, her death became the defining moment of the entire game and a moment synonymous with Final Fantasy as a whole.
The ONLY logical explanation I can give is that the party thinks that fate in their timeline ends in sephiroth winning. So they defy fate to prevent that from happening, not knowing that not intervening ends up with sephiroth...actually not dead given what happens in advent children i guess? I dunno...
I agree. I think, even Sephiroth, for better or for worse, is not satisfied with how Fate played out for him. The way it left him an eternal shadow/phantom tied to Cloud. Like being a disembodied spirit bound to Earth, unable to enter the Heavens. So the goal is to defy that Fate, risking it all into unknown territory. Nothing is safe, not even Zack's and Aerith's original Fate.
Is this the 'courage' that helped Apple ditch the headphone jack? How about letting a new generation experience Final Fantasy VII for the first time, instead of this masturbatory fans-only bullshit for card-carrying Squeenixers? Would that have been easier? Look, it's Zack! Remember Zack? OMG Sephiroth showed up, he's so cool he _sliced through the fourth wall! EPIC!_ Making a different game and calling it Final Fantasy VII Remake _is_ cashing in on the nostalgia.
@@KillahMate the irony in your response is that this is the way to let a new generation experience final fantasy 7 and the card carrying squeenixers are pissed af...
I was with you until the end. The multiple timelines means they can stay relatively close to the OG FF7 in the main timeline but give us something different in the Zach timeline. It is literally the best of both worlds. Saying that Zach being alive kills the main motivation for Cloud is wrong. Zach is still dead in the main timeline. Zach is only alive in the 2nd timeline. Zach being alive changes nothing in the main timeline.
I'm really torn about how I feel about this game. It has so much that i loved about the original but those last couple of chapters even before the ending was telling so much of what was supposed to happen that you could tell they were changing the plot. The more minor changes they made were fine and made a lot of sense such as everyone not sleeping at the bar and actually having apartments and houses to live in and they made me love all the extra things they added to expand the game with chapter 4 being one of my favorite additions. I agree with you 90% of the game was amazing but the last 10% just weird and changing everything. I just wish they had kept the original story for the most part and added things to make everything make sense with the additions of the compilations adding some plot holes that needed to be addressed.
Agreed. I started getting nervous when Sephiroth reared his head in front of Jenova's room. And my fears turned into utter disappointment. I was willing to go along with the Whispers being the will of the planet. Fine. Whatever. It's in line with the lore of the original. But that whole alternate timeline nonsense is inexcusable. And the final battle against that Whisper Harbinger and then Sephiroth???? WTF? How do you raise the stakes from that? The party can just fight Gods upon leaving Midgar and that's it? Ugh.
@@andreseh87 Also you cannot consider the whisperers to be the will of the planet because the planet do not want sephirot to win but still help him. It is like in endgame storyline where you somehow must go with a bad timeline to justify something else in the future but these whisperers are seemingly timeless beings and could not find a way to purge Jenova before the end of FF VII and lost in the future? They did fuck all when Jenova came to the planet and if they are "fate" then they are a cosmic force that knew Jenova would fall, to begin with. And they seemingly suck at correcting the timelines if dudes with swords can fight them and win. Sephiroth is explained as something that fate simply cannot touch but why? Jenova cells? If the whisperers are both entities of fate and the will of the planet then they are very bad at being either. I also agree with the fighting gods. I did not mind them having Jenova or sephirot as that was more or less inevitable but the whisperers really did fuck up everything. If they actually killed the will of the planet then the planet should not be able to use lifestream to solve the sephiroth crisis and is now doomed.
@@vincentgraymore they fucked up, they changed the best story of any FF and they gave us meta and more meta content. they utterly lied to us, we wanted a REMAKE not a reimagining, not a reboot. SquareEnix should take example from CApcom what they did with Resident evil franchise.
and another thing... is WTF in the OG almost every summon you got had a meaning, i m ok with finding them somewhere random but why the hell they have to be on VR? made by this chadley? that is wrong...
You also have to realize it would be boring since we would know what would happens Also last I checked not many people talked about the final fantasy 8 remaster do you remember it of course not.
Everything you said towards the end is exactly how I feel after just completing the game. FF7 is my all time fav game and I feel sick thinking im still not going to get a remake of the original game :(
They clearly split their audience at the end. Lots of people are already dropping out and will continue to drop out while others are jumping in (they'll be less).I wish them good luck, but I'm out. Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3 storyline was enough of BS for my entire life.
I am kind annoying with english localisation of the scene with Aerith saying "Everything about you is wrong." to Sephiroth and "This isn't supposed to be." In japanese, Aerith is saying "You are mistaken." to Sephiroth, and that "Sephiroth only cares about himself and the planet, and would do anything to protect it. I think it's wrong." I get localisation changes things, but that coveys the completely different message. I don't think Remake goes completely off the rails, ending has still party leaving Midgar to hunt for Sephiroth, and he isn't time-traveling, it's just Marco.
Pity. There are a lot more twisted translations all throughout the game. Sometimes totally changing the personality of the characters. Sometimes just plain wrong. I get why so many players of the "english" version are so confused. It's the terrible translations.
Well, I prefer the english version. It sums up many things. For me, there were opening for a lot of interpretation, like, the fact that what he's doing is wrong, the fact that he's the result of an experiment than shouldn't have happened, etc. And actually, it clicked, because that last part is what turned him mad in the first place. An you can see, at his reaction, that he didn't really liked what she said (it touched a sensible point), but you also see that he's past that and determined to go to the end of his plan.
My favourite scenes in the original were when we gradually discovered who Sephiroth was. I loved the cozy silence as Cloud told everyone his story. I will never get that back.
You actually will get that back, because they don't all know about Cloud's past at this point. He is still going to spill his guts, and we may even get a taste of having Sephiroth in our party.
tRupuyno 2001 I think he still dies. As the party stands outside Midgar, it shows a flashback of him carrying Cloud toward Midgar but it’s clearly after that battle. But then again maybe Don Corneo farted another timeline where Zack is a ticket taker at Gold Saucer. No idea with the direction they went.
neylandsmaxims No he most likely survived, but that zack is from a different timeline. We saw a poster of Stamp but it’s a different kind of dog, i think it was a basset hound? While in the ff7r timeline we have a beagle.
It’s a different timeline, in the FF7R timeline Zack is already dead but now we wonder what this scene implies, a cross section of different timeline in the future ?
it makes no sense, had zack survived, you really think aeris would've come across cloud, hell no, he would've taken aeris out of midgar and someplace far away, then, meteor would've destroyed the planet because aeris wouldn't have known about sephiroth and the black materia, the more i think about this, the more i realize just how much they fucked up the story at the very beginning, those ghosts are a distraction from the story they changed, where you're like wait, this isn't part of the stor-- oh shit more ghosts to fight
@@Shen7695 It is actually at least 3 timelines now. One that is the one we are playing and it is the one where sephirot somehow know he will lose. The original which is only used as a one-way information ticket as we already know that that timeline knows nothing of any other timeline, fate altering or similar. One where Zack lives but there is no implication of what that actually means. The dog is somewhat proof but that timeline seemingly was created by the timeline we play because the alterations were not a part of our story. Maybe the whisperers were guardians of all timelines but this was the one where they were defeated. Time travel and things similar always opens up a can of worms and this was sad to see in a game "franchise" that had none of it before (there are many FF games with timeline trouble but FF VII titles were spared of it because it made no sense to have in those).
Did Jessie survive, too? In the scene where Biggs lies in a bed, you can see personal items of Jessie on the table. I hope so. In the Remake (I do not want to discuss whether it is one or not) she got so much more personality.
Ernst Baum Dude, those are Biggs things. His glove and his red bandanna. Jesse has one too, but it’s clear it belongs to Biggs since he’s in bed with a head bandage.
I like it. The original is like reading a good book. It doesn't matter that the characters look like badly drawn transformers, their competent animation and the infamous story make it. There's no need for a graphics update or voice actors. If anything its current configuration works in its favour. That's not to say I didn't expect and hope that this was going to be a faithful retelling. Now that I see what they've done I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the new tale will unfold.
@@dmen0563 it you own theory that blocking you from enjoyng the ending, get away from the theory and look for answers in the lore of ff7, everything in this game is in the lore of ff7.
Part of me was like, oh I’m interested to see what they’ll do! The other half of me was like but you told me you were going to remake and you lied to my face. The whispers were the part I liked the least and now we have alt dimension or timelines, I really hope this doesn’t become a huge mess...
I don't think they're going to majorly change the story and i'm pretty sure that what happened with Zack was that he survived his CC death and was going to his original death.
I'm sorry but would we really look back at this game and it's sequel in another decade or two with as much fondness as to call it the greatest game ever made as the original if it had just been the same thing? I don't think so, personally. I like the new direction because we don't know what to expect. Will Aerith still die? Will meteor still be cast? It's what they were saying. A blank slate.
@@Taygon45 I agree, FF7 was part of my childhood, but this is FF7 Remake its a retelling and its an alternate timeline in which events took place and the outcome is different. Just because you are seeing a different version doesnt take anything away from the original. To put it mildy you saw the original Avengers team and you loved it, then Thanos snapped and destroyed it, they went back and altered the timeline, now the Avengers are different. Do you hate the new Avengers or do you like them but differently. Its not all or nothing, you can appreciate both visions of the same product. you dont have to hate one in order to love the other. I am totally on board to see what changes happen in the next installment.
@@Taygon45 if FF as a series still goes on and strong in a decade or two, 7, original or a faithful remake, would still be remembered as the great game it was, or as the best FF for many. This one thing is certain, and making a weird spin off of it isn't. This is why to even make a remake in the first place. I don't want when asked about my favourite FF, I have to explain "my favorite FF is 7, not the remake though, that is shit, they're not the same". This new FF7 future is uncertain, of course, it could be great, or much worse.
@@vanthadoun1 That's a terrible example, Infinity War and End Game is not the same movie, they're a prequel and sequel, it is a ongoing timeline, from the view of the audience. FF7R is going to be a reboot, a whole new alternate timeline, from both the perspective of in game and as audience. From the audience's perspective, the original and remake has no intercept and thus, not what the majority wants. It would be a different thing if post original FF7 and AC Cloud decides to time travel and go back to save the day, it would be a different story, like your Avengers example, not that I would like it to go that way, but that's a different story.
I would expect the future parts to at least roughly (as in "not nearly as well as this one did for most of the time, but at least on big picture level") follow the original story still (we visit same places, for same or at least similar reasons, the character motivations and goals being the same or similar etc.) but some plot points will obviously change. Might even be that we get to actually influence how things turn out through player choice and actions (like we could save Aerith if we did something earlier in the game etc) as that would be very much in theme of this "fate is no longer set in stone" thing that the ending implies. I just hope they drop the time travel/alternate timeline thing now that that point is made and the whispers dead or at least don't make it a big part of the plot going forward, but since it's Nomura in charge of things I fear that won't be the case. Of course, they might make it completely different, but I wouldn't really see the point in that. They have to know that would piss off so many fans that it would kill any goodwill that they got by making this in the first place (they seem to have partly succeeded in that already with this ending). It would really damage the image of the whole franchise and them as a company. I suppose we just have to wait and see. I hope we get at least some info about the direction of the future once the dust has settled. There are just so many questions the fan base has right now.
If you've played the Kingdom Hearts sequels, you'd know that they are heading into a convoluted and only understandable under LSD story. The only hope for this series is to keep the people who brought this idea and all the whisperers thing as far as possible from this project.
I don't think they will deviate so drastically that let's say it's unrecognizable. What I feel they will be doing is taking the original story from ff7 and just maybe presenting it differently or having different outcomes. Like the ultimate goal is still the same...defeating sephiroth....what might change is how they actually defeat him. But your idea of saving aerith and how what we do in the game influences wether she dies or lives I think would be awesome and is something I thought about too. We did have it in remake it was minor but depending on how many side missions we did before going to save Tifa determines how Aerith dresses when infiltrating Cornaos house (like in sector 5 where you going to the orphanage and such and help out the kids with some quests) If people are mad that Nomura is doing something different then really they aren't understanding people. I like it when things get done differently not to mention the remake ending doesn't tarnish the story if the original it preserves it by pointing out varying timelines some people have even point out that the Midgard the group travels to after stepping into the light at destiny's crossroads is the original Midgard from the original game. I think people think of timelines as one straight line and if you go back and change something in the past that it effects the future but there is so much more media that depicts the contrary Dragon Ball is good example of this. Trunks goes back in time to make sure Goku doesn't die (which is the ultimate cause of his present) but him saving Goku doesn't change his actual present it just allows for another future to be born. From the looks of it this is true in the remake that the deviation the group takes doesn't actually effect their future selves. Ultimately just cause Aerith might not die in the remake timeline doesn't mean she doesn't die overall she just doesn't die in this timeline.
Aerith was trying to leave before she met cloud, the whispers kept her there. Cloud wasn't going to go on the second bombing mission, the whispers injured Jessie so he'd go. Cloud was going to kill Reno, the whispers stopped him. Whispers stopped shinra security capturing Aerith in the church. Aerith nearly fell to her death in the church tower, the whispers saved her. The party arrived at the support pillar too soon, the whispers delayed them. The whispers probably interfered and caused the mortal wounding of Jessie and Biggs as they're seen hanging around after the fact. The whispers held Wedge in place in an attempt to ensure his death as the plate fell. The whispers prevented Hojo from revealing Cloud is a reunion experiment. The whispers are presumed to have thrown wedge down an elevator shaft, as they failed to kill him earlier. The whispers attempted to prevent sephiroth from killing Barret but he teleported straight through them, they then brought Barret back. The whispers stopped a bridge crushing the party during their escape. This all makes sense in terms of the whispers trying to keep everything in line with the original game. All of this is unwelcome and unnecessary Nomura tier horseshit writing, and that's bad enough, but he can't even keep his horrible writing consistent. If his writing were consistent, the whispers wouldn't be trying to keep the party in Midgar, they'd be letting everyone leave. He's shoehorned in this fucking awful change and then flipped on it during the closing minutes of the game, with no real reason given. SE need to stop letting this guy write, he's a great character designer, but he ruins every series he writes for.
The way I sort of look at it (and I'm not trying to defend the choices made here) is that by the time the whispers healed up Barrett, they were losing control of keeping sephiroth in check. I think by the end they were frantically trying to keep sephiroth and the group contained in the city so the group could stop him, but this world's sephiroth just became too powerful. I guess what I'm responding to is that it might not be a flip on the original choice, because the whispers weren't trying to keep the party in Midgard per se, but maybe trying to prevent sephiroth from leaving. While the group is at the edge of the city, nothing is stopping them from leaving until sephiroth shows up.
15:06 I agree 100% with your conclusion. When I first played the ending I was hating the entire thing despite absolutely loving the rest of the game. Now that I've seen a lot of videos and theories and explanations of the ending, I like it a bit more but I ultimately feel like this is unecessary change.
I have mixed feelings of both disappointment and also of excitement to see where it till go. Unfortunately though, after such subpar (to say the least) installations as Advent Children and especially Dirge of Cerberus, I feel skeptical. I appreciate something new, but it's a huge risk. SE's track record with FFVII spinoffs is not very good. I hope that I'm in for a huge positive surprise, though.
That is also my feeling. If there's a group I don't trust with storytelling or straight-forward production, it's SE. This was the ONE thing I thought they couldn't mess up.
It's possible that the spinoffs sucked because they tried to stick to the source material a bit too much. With this, they have more creative freedom to push the boat out a little further, I see this as an exciting opportunity to add new locations and story elements meanwhile telling the same old main scenario.
Let's address some complaints now shall we. "It's different and therefore it is ruined!" Different does not mean bad. The original Ff7 still exist and you can play it on literally anything, anywhere. This games does not wipe that story from existence. "This isn't a Remake! I was lied to!" Unless square literally said that this would have the exact same story as the original with not changes, then you were not lied to. A Remake by definition means to make something differently, that is the literal definition of the word. Just because other games that get remade do something that doesn't mean everyone has to do the same thing. Overall, people dislike change. Any change. Regardless of weather or not it might be good or bad, if it's different, they hate it. Everyone knows at least some parts of the original story, and I'm glad they're changing things up and in an interesting way. They could mess it up in the future but for right now I like it. It's fine to dislike something. But don't act like your opinion is the only one that exist. Plenty of people like this new take on the story so if you dislike it, fine, just don't say that it "ruined" or that "they killed your childhood".
1. The original FF7 is 20 years old, has PS1 graphics, no voice acting, midi music, and poor localization. 2. Look up the definition of "Remake" you just described what any rational human being would call a "Reboot" IE, taking a franchise in a new direction 'inspired by' the original. The name of the game is literally "FF7 Remake" It's very deceptive. 3. Because all they needed to do was modernize an already existing game and they couldn't even do that right. Spyro and Crash are remakes, and they are both great and let people relive their nostalgia while enjoying various modernizations that improve the experience. It's not a hard concept to grasp and it's what fans have wanted all along. Nobody was like "YO I WANT DA MIDGAR PART TO BE 30 HOURS LONG"
I did look up the definition of Remake. It says to make something differently or again. Like i said, just because video game developers have done remakes largely in one way, does not mean that it's the only way to do it.
There's a difference between expanding and flushing out story that wasn't possible in the original, IE the majority of this remake, and completely rewriting 80% of a story people expect. Then you have that convoluted bullshit at the end that is the devs saying "thanks for participating in some nostalgia with us, now let us take you through some Kingdom Hearts bullshit". That's not what the fans wanted and they know it. They implemented a setup to completely change the game from the original at the end of this remake and that's clearly what most are pissed about.
Also if they explained everything in part one, then that would leave little mystery for the future. It's obvious they are going to explain everything later. Also "because Sephiroth" makes perfect sense. Saying that he can just go "fuck destiny" makes sense if you look at all the other ridiculous things he done over the years.
@@rockstarji21 Sephiroth 100% makes perfect sense in the context of the game, he is the embodiment of Jenova, he also is part human which means he has a part of the planet in him or he "IS" in a sense but because he has Jenova cells since he was a fetus... well he can't simply just go back to the lifestream, Sephiroth like everyone else when returned to the planet keep their consciousness and so anyone that has Jenova cells in them are still walking around.... he can just take over their body and remold it after a time into himself, Cloud constantly fights with Sephiroths will in the original due to Jenova cells' influence in his body, Kadaj in AC also took Jenova cells into him and transformed into Sephiroth IMMEDIATELY meaning sephiroth was waiting for that moment to happen, its no stretch that he could know as much as what the planet knows now that he is a part of the lifestream but has the inherent capabilities to be immortal granted that the Jenova cells are still present in a person This convoluted timeline garbage is nothing more than the devs shitting on us fans that have been asking for a decade for a game with MODERN GRAPHICS and relatively updated core game design... THATS IT, we don't want the overarching narratives to be changed, I have a sister and have been telling her for that long how great the story is, she just can't get into the original because of how dated the graphics are, so now I'm almost having to tell my own sibling... "Well they fucked it up already, might as well get used to the old graphics because SE likes to fuck up great works of art even the best ones THEY THEMSELVES MADE"
I am a massive FF fan, even more so a fan of these characters. But this is BRILLIANT. I’ve hated the idea of a remake. I want to take these characters on new adventures, see and feel new things. The fact this story is was a huge departure straight up FLOORED ME. FF7 didn’t have a perfect story, and where we left those characters was pretty depressing. The fact that they have a chance to make their own ending by fighting fate is beautiful. I don’t get why so many people hate this. I’ve never been so thrilled to see what happens next.
I agree. Since we already know the flow of the story of FF7, it's very exciting how Square Enix will connect the original story with an alternate timeline.
the reason why people are apprehensive is because the people in charge of the story have a horrible track record of telling incomprehensible anime brainfart stories. i would too be in for surprises but not when the fasion designer (nomura) gets so much shots to call
Honestly, I didn't mind the "changes" at the end of FF7R. I was curious how the game will end, knowing that this isn't going to be the complete game from the original. It just leaves more question to find out in coming DLC / Sequel(s). Yet, I'm not a die hard final fantasy fan.
@@tonydanatop4912 yeah, because ff13, ff15, and KH are totally not convoluted shit stains of a story. because the stories of ff13, ff15, and KH really captured people's hearts the same way ff7's story did. yep, given the track record, im sure this time, those competent people will totally rein in nomura's fanfiction down a notch.
GeranBeast Nomura’s not even writing this game, only directing, and his involvement with 15 was only when it was 13 Versus. And he had nothing to do with 13. I’m not the biggest Nomura fan, but the man gets way more hate than he deserves for things he’s not even responsible for
if they want to alter the story, then just do it - other remakes have done it before, why come out with this elaborate whispers/destiny/alternate timeline thing at all, and mess up the whole narrative along the way? And it's one thing to leave little hints and tie everything together neatly at the end, but it's very much in your face all the time, with dementors showing up to (needlessly) intervene and change major plot points throughout the whole game. I don't think i've ever seen anything as corny as characters LITERALLY fighting destiny, either.
Let it play out, the stage has been set, let's see the act before we judge it. At this point it can go either way. Meaning it can also be really good. Stay tuned folks.
This is true but you also have to consider that people can and will judge parts regardless if they are part of something bigger. This can turn out good but it is basically impossible that it turns out good and be canon. This remake, regardless if part of something bigger, cannot be put in between crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus or advent children and can be judged for what it is. This reboot requires either introduction of timelines, dimensions or similar to be even close to canon. In fact, it has introduced it into FF VII compilation regardless of intention. Even if this is supposed to be an entirely different universe that just happens to be similar to FF VII, people can and will forever link them together. It can still be good but people are torn on how to feel because it does become a vessel for new story borrowing and destroying the old. Both can exist but the old fans did not want timelines like in the Zelda or Kingdom hearts franchise but are now forced to drink from that well. I am torn myself and have tried to rationalized liking or disliking this game and don't know where I land just yet.
You're completely missing the point here. It doesn't matter if this part or the entierty of the project is good or bad. What matters, and what Aoife is rightfully pointing out, is that there is no Final Fantasy 7 Remake, because from here on out they won't be telling the same story we know and love. We've been played, fooled, mocked. Some will say it's a genius move, that we've been "Nomura'd". Others, like me, will say that's not what we asked and paid for, and not even what was being advertised to us. So, the other parts? To go on with your theatre metaphore, there's no need to see the act before judging it when you already know they're not going to play the act you wanted, even though that's what they advertised. One thing is for sure, I won't be setting foot in the SquareEnix Theatre ever again, their plays keep disappointing time and time again and I'm fed up of it.
@@vincentgraymore Understandable. I have considered the possibility that our interpretation of what occurred during the ending may not have anything to do with altering timelines and maybe just the fact of glimpses of the future due to aerith's and sephiroth's connection to the planet and jenova respectively. I will hold my ultimate verdict of that part until part 2 comes out.
Kingpin Enzo Oh trust me. I don’t plan on supporting SquareEnix anymore, and I will not buy the next FF7 "remake" game. About your other comment, the ending IS about altering timelines. That’s literally what the party does by fighting the Harbinger of fate, who just wants the story to go like the original story went. And that’s what is confirmed to happen as soon as the Whispers die/disappear, as Zack survives the Shinra’s ambush (he’s supposed to have died there, and it is in the past, not te future), and Biggs being alive when he should have been dead on the Sector 7 pillar. How and why this happened? I have no idea and don’t even care because I don’t care for the game anymore. But it did happen.
The only thing I’m worried about is if some how they kill Cloud off as a way to save Zack or undermine Clouds journey.. Otherwise I’m ridiculously excited about the concept of having these characters that we love dive into a familiar but different story. Excited but weary.. Great Video as always!!
The developers have outdone themselves. I love video games like this that turned a known Universe or what you thought or expecting completely over your head upside down.
In the original FF7 Cloud guesses Aerith knew she had to die to save the world and let Sepiroth kill her. I wonder if this new timeline will better explain how she knew. Or if she will survive the forgotten city but, at a different point in the story realize she still has to succumb to destiny...
Does the ending actually look like it's railroading down that new path, or is Nomura/SE going to have a transition point to where players can pursue the original storyline versus the new one? I shudder to think how huge that project would be, but vastly different branching storylines would be very cool.
That's kinda the vibe I got. Aerith is talking about how their choices will change things. the original had very few points where the story deviated even a little. Anything "optional" and thus missable was not relevant to the main plot whatsoever.
@@marhawkman303, that's what I got also. I don't think the party can actually change anything. They've been shown glimpses of the future in short and out of context fragments. They have no idea how to avoid them or what causes them. Their actions going forward will most likely guarantee their fates versus avoiding said fate. However, I do think the developers desperately want to change the story, but they played it safe with a vague ending. If the backlash too severe, they'll just retcon the last two hours of this game, or kill the project. They really can't afford to have this project fail, though.
I loved the game right up until the ending, which landed with me the same way. I'm generally up for fairly major changes to reboots or adaptations and we always have the original in any case, but doing an unresolved plot 180 in the last 1-2 hours of the game is difficult to take in straight away. Hopefully they have some interesting ideas of where to take the series that won't rely on simple "that's not how it happened in the original"-factor as a storytelling crutch, and tells the story entirely in-game without the need to reference other media (or even the original that much). It's a bit worrying that the main effect so far has been to retroactively undo some of the emotional impact of the Sector 7 collapse. The cynic in me thinks if they wanted to remake an FF where the main characters make unclear fate-defying choices based on blurry visions, they should have remade XIII... but fingers crossed it still works out!
Good points dude. True about ffxiii this game reeks of that direction. Part 2 of FF13 was confusing and some crazy chaos theory time travel shit. The whispers sound like the chaos. Hope SE haven't balls this up. It could be boring fighting Sephiroth in p2 + p3 as he's already super powerful and skipped alot of his story already. Hope they ain't balls it up.
I think she's right...I don't mind clouds head being so messed up that he has an alternative history to reality, but having an actual alternative reality starts to get a bit silly and far too complex. Plus I can't see why the current day team beating there fate can possibly effect events in the past namely Zacks certain death!?? In that alternative reality cloud won't have Zacks sword but is still infused with mako, so he could still be pretty handy after all he did plunge Sethy into the lifestream
Honestly do people not get it. Kept asking for an updated or HD quality of a 2000 game where a predictable story is bound to happen. you can search you tube about the story off FF7 and there would be no point of a so called "remake." Props to square Enix for giving us another great Final Fantasy game.
Its such a frustrating feeling as a fan because up until shinra hq the game was impossibly good. Graphically the game is mostly stunning (with the exception of some less than stellar skyboxes in places), the reworked combat system did a fantastic job of incorporating turn based strategy into a real time action based combat system. The materia system is to this day my favourite mechanic in any final fantasy and this did a great job of implementing that. The voice acting was great across the board, the music was some of the best that you could hope to hear and the writing up until shinra was actually really good. I loved the additions to the story, i loved the new character moments that were introduced and the side quests added just enough variety without actually feeling tedious. Then the whole last act for me leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The whole shinra hq sequence drags on for far too long. In particular the sequence in the jenova chamber reminded me of THAT sequence in ffxv that had to be patched, it just felt unnecessarily padded and throws boss fight after boss fight at you which results in them feeling more annoying than tense. I also wish they would have buried the lead with sephiroth more, i wouldn't have had a problem with him not being seen in this game at all, i certainly don't think he should've been the final boss. Then of course to top it all off the game ends by telling us that this in fact will no longer be the remake of ffvii that we were promised, that we've been craving for years. That instead we'll be getting an alternate timeline where nobody dies. Zack not dying would be like uncle ben not dying in spider-man. Clouds whole character arc revolves around his death and one of the major motivations for the group after leaving midgar is the fact that jessie, biggs and wedge all die. These deaths had a purpose in the original game. They carried weight and raise the stakes going forward. In fact i thought the game did a very good job of initially elevating the characters of jessie, biggs and wedge so that their deaths were more impactful. I really felt it a connection to them in a way that i didn't in the original but when they survive after being shot AND having a city drop on them all that tension is gone. The worrying thing going forwards is that it was heavily implied that either aerith won't die or her death will be altered to 'subvert expectations'. Frankly the way this game has handled the deaths of fairly minor characters I'm not sure if i trust it to do a good job of recapturing one of the most iconic scenes in the history of this industry.
Now, this is what you called a game for the new generation of JRPG gamers. I'm a huge Final Fantasy VII and seeing other games being remastered is ok and all, but staying stuck in the past is downright stealing what's in store for us in the future. Let us all move on and cherish what has come to pass and embrace and celebrate what's new to come.
Wow, what a take. Saying fans who wanted the original storyline are stealing. Bear in mind that nobody who played the original knew that they were going to play this card and all those players who asked for a Remake weren't asking for the story to be altered, they wanted to see Midgar and the rest in more detail, to be able to explore the world more, to see this story in greater detail, not for the story to be altered. This is not staying stuck in the past, not even in the slightest. Staying stuck in the past would be complaining that this game's graphics aren't like the original, that there's too much detail in Midgar, etc. How about you show empathy to those who were hoping to experience FFVII's story in greater detail with plotholes filled, characters expanded on and new graphics, as opposed to a different timeline reboot / sequel to the original FFVII and labeled as a remake.
There is absolutely nothing about ff7 remake that feels stuck in the past, to old fans or new players. So there was no need to throw it all away at the end. If the writers wanted freedom, they could have done that from the start instead of lying to everyone. Or just make another game. You could use the 'stuck in the past' excuse to discredit the idea of remaking a game at all, and simply demand it never be done and just make a different game instead.
So, "re:make" is not really a "remake" word that we expected before, but it's a main plot of this story now, just like if there's a trilogy it would be remake, and with other re: re: re: re: words, like reborn, rebound, rebirth, or reunion

Fucking made my day. I played Kingdom heart 1 and 2 both and loved them. But then I started playing the other games and they bored the shit out of me.
I hate that it was advertised as a remake but I want her to live. I’ve wanted that since 1997
@@TheRedCapesClan Honestly the twist of it not being a faithful Remake wouldn't have landed quite as powerfully if it was hinted at more strongly than they already did in the title alone.
Makes me worried for Tifa now though..

Hahaha! That was exactly what I thought when I finished the game...FFVII done pulled an Evangelion.

@@xxSpike1989xx Yeah, that bit about "change ourselves" IE maybe now it's a branching story and there's the possibility of having Aerith NOT die? What would that do to the story?
To be fair, there's always the possibility she could still die. Future is unclear, anything is possible. Let's hope anyways.
ff 7 what if
I think that the Zack scene was just to show to us that from now on events can unfold in a different way.
So, next cloud would use weapon name buster hammer..?
sadly it all wrong with i learned not to long ago the devs want the whispers on the OG game and they are in the ff7 lore. it the black stuff coming out of seph hands in AC. which means they are do as they told you they would, they said think of it as expanded story with all ff7 lore in it.

Who is supposed to be happy with this except Crisis Core fans
purely cause they want more Zack regardless of what it does to the original story. They didnt make this remake only for old fans. So yeah if it's not a remake but a different timeline sequel OF COURSE they should've branded it as such.
@@GOHST13ly I don't think "surprises" of this magnitude are a good call for either old fans or new players

@@ftgrimm1016 it is called a remake for a reason. SE is going far beyond the definition of it in the gaming. They said it way back during interviews, that the original story is intact but this isn't actually a remake of FF7 it's a reimagining of it.
I'm betting the new story will be about trying to create the best possible timeline.

Final Fantasy VII : REMAKE
but i still feel bad for the purists who wanted the identical thing. they at least deserved a fitting remaster after all these years.
By definition alone “remake” works just fine idk why people say it isn’t a remake
if Sephiroth did somehow manage to travel back in time, then why bother with Shinra? why make his presence known to cloud? sure, he needs Jenovas body for the reunion, but why stick around for cloud? if anything, he made better progress in the original by getting Jenova and leaving. by staying around, he now has Cloud even closer on his trail.
also if he is from the future, he knows where the Black Materia is now. just send some clones and take it up to the crater. he doesnt even need cloud now, if thats the case.
adding a concept like time travel just adds so many plot holes. which makes me wonder if this even is time travel. i did hear a theory that its not Sephiroth, but Aerith that traveled back. which then wouldnt cause the plot holes i mentioned. which would also explain alot of her strange behaviors throughout the story, and why she became so assertive towards the end, acting almost as if she were the party leader after the final fight.
but even then, shes a Cetra, her power comes from communing with the planet. she cant draw from that energy within Midgar.
I resonate with both of your sentiments exactly. FF7R is brilliant in combat, variety, and (most) of its filler content--I'd say 90% good, 10% bad. I haven't been this excited and hopeful since FFX
And as a life long FF fan, I don't... I guess they'll have a divided player base from now on.
Fuck yeah dude!!
There's also another CC reference when Hojo says he will breed Aerith with Soldiers with the S or G genome.

Basically yer. Nomura was kind and fucked over every FF7 fan.
I don't mind them changing things but I do mind NOMURA changing things. When has he ever stuck a landing? When has he even had a landing at all? KH is still going on. The fact that there's a twist at all is cool, but the chances of this ending in not-a-mess are slim.

That and if the next game's as good as this one, then i'll be happy with whatever vision square has in store.
i could be wrong but we dont actually see them die in ff7 so maybe they did survive
I just finished it, and it got me thinking everything else is about to be kinda “what if” if that makes sense
Not that I'm rooting for tragedies, but it's one thing to ponder about.
miburoushi exactly that, man its gonna be crazy
Well, nomura, kingdom hearts and verum rex; This is his test ground for verum rex .
for me i play this game with a different mindset. Since like the way its heading... Even from the start its hinted as a different game from the OG. Its already shown that the world is not the same even before you play it.. things like avalanche is a organizations instead of just Barret party, Whispers is first time met with aerith, jessie biggs and wedge die a lot earlier in originals. the bombing of MR7 is not an inside job from original... so is not faithful even from start and even as a demo... so by then i know its different from original people mad since they expect same game.. but i like it and love it.. treat it as marvel multiverse... both spiderman earth 616 peter parker (amazing spiderman) and peter parker ultimate universe are canon but storyline different, don't need to be afraid of the changes..
they probably trying to save themselves from making huge overworld lol

Same, I was so exhausted in the end.

How do you cock up what has up to that point been an outstanding game?
That's how.
I can't imagine what people who haven't played the original would have thought.
I agree with you and also I want to add to what you've said: I believe their choice to go this route is because they know the fans of the story already know what is going to happen. They chose to do this so that the story will feel new again, and so that the scenes we remember will surprise us again. And also the title "Remake" sort of gave it away for me, and when I finished the game it got even clearer. They chose to name it "remake" not because it's a remake, but because they are "remaking" the timeline. It's actually pretty clever in some ways.
However, I totally get that people are disappointed, I am too in a way because I was expecting a certain story....but I am also super excited to what might happen, what they might change. Because then it's like playing the original all over again.
I also cried hysterically over the fact that Zack might be alive....and that he and Aerith might have a happy future together ; o ;

Wow, thanks for the note about translation!
After reading this I am glad to have this game in German, because they translated really close to the original lines.
What is you will be able to choose your fate in the next installments? It would be based on choices. I honestly would be completely ok with that
still no prove of timelines at all but still saying there are timelines, it make 100 percent sense once your way from wild unproven theories and look at ff7 lore for the answers and everything in this game is in the lore of ff7.
So fate will decide if i get another date with Tifa at the golden saucer... i don't like these odds.
I was so excited up until the last few chapters

This is Nomura telling us: "I gave you a taste of the remake you wanted...now im in f'kin charge..."
Mike Rentas
I do think we will be visiting all of the same locations, and I think the main story beats will still be relatively similar.
It’s worrying for sure but it could end up being something real fuckin neat.
but the whispers have no control anymore. sephiroth has just become the new arbitor of fate..
makes him scarier than ever
Whispers don't exist anymore because Cloud defeated fate. However, it would be even more gut-wrenching if Cloud made the choice to let Aerith die in this game knowing the events of the original timeline.
amen
@@SnakeWorksStudio sounds like a trash game mechanic.
Jelly Bryce haha! Just trying to figure out what they might do next
"Hopefully they wont change things as much as we fear"
They literally opened a portal to 'outside of the remake'. It's over. Hope you liked the Final Fantasy VII you got, because you're getting Kingdom Fantasy from now on.
ff7 remake pretty much got nomura'ed. Get ready for infinite world + time jump + fate + heart bullshit for other parts.
No reason?? Aerith dies, the meteor falls on Midgar, the weapons attacking cities... A barren Midgar 500 years in the future. Yeah right.
It would have been easier to cash in on the nostalgia.
It would have been harder to make changes that makes sense, instead of dissonant ones.
But the changes will allow for more spinoffs/crossovers spread over the next 15 years.
EPIC!_
Making a different game and calling it Final Fantasy VII Remake _is_ cashing in on the nostalgia.
the real question is if it would have been more profitable, I don't think it would.
You also have to realize it would be boring since we would know what would happens
Also last I checked not many people talked about the final fantasy 8 remaster do you remember it of course not.
Years of excitement for the remake now its years of fear for the next part...
AKA Last Jedi Syndrome.
@pigjedi yeh i wasnt expecting that kind of ending I'm on my second play through now i love it, the wait for the next part is going to be a killer
I am kind annoying with english localisation of the scene with Aerith saying "Everything about you is wrong." to Sephiroth and "This isn't supposed to be."
In japanese, Aerith is saying "You are mistaken." to Sephiroth, and that "Sephiroth only cares about himself and the planet, and would do anything to protect it.
When we beat the entire game everything will return to the original -even the voice actors. ...especially for Zack.
I did so like Crisis Core's voice for Zack better but what can ya do lol. Still love Zack.
Hype level 100 when they showed the recreated ff7cc ending scene with zack...until he started talking
Ah yes, let's go back to the original FF7 voice actors of 20+ years ago!
Its not our Zack though :( its just some other timelines Zack.
Yes, definitely. Question is, will we get Angeal and Genesis back in on things? Would be interesting since Genesis had a cameo in Dirge of Cerberus.
If they make it a trilogy, my guess for the 2nd and 3rd title are Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 7 Reunion.
I'm actually with this.
I think youre right, remake-rebirth-reunion
So, remake is not actually a "remake", but it's the main plot of this story

me: WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?
tRupuyno 2001 I think he still dies.
@@SnowCoveredKK That's Jessie's glove, there is a metal part on it
Whispers were involved in the fight when she passed away, just like with Biggs. So I'm pretty sure she survived
Thank you for the breakdown of the ending since it made tons and tons of fans upset.
I would feel the same if it wasn't for kingdom hearts level nonsense instead of good storytelling like the original

I don't think they're going to majorly change the story and i'm pretty sure that what happened with Zack was that he survived his CC death and was going to his original death.
That's what I thought originally and then I kept watching theories and kind of spooked myself out. Ugh
Honestly, this is very upsetting. The game is amazing, but why not stick to the story that made us want a remake in the first place.
It is such an unnecessary direction. So ridiculous.
We did have it in remake it was minor but depending on how many side missions we did before going to save Tifa determines how Aerith dresses when infiltrating Cornaos house (like in sector 5 where you going to the orphanage and such and help out the kids with some quests)
If people are mad that Nomura is doing something different then really they aren't understanding people.
I just don’t know how I feel about this. It’s such a mean cliff hanger to leave on too!
how come u have materia in your name?
why do u have materia?
If his writing was consistent, whispers wouldn't even exist.
But it's Nojima and Toriyama that's writing the story? Nomura is responsible for the battle system and main character designs AFAIK.
I wholeheartedly agree.
I feel the same! Trying to have an open mind because honestly, this could go however.
That is also my feeling. If there's a group I don't trust with storytelling or straight-forward production, it's SE. This was the ONE thing I thought they couldn't mess up.
Maybe they try to fix the secret ending of dirge cerberus with this remake, oh i mean this sequel
@@rockstarji21 Sephiroth 100% makes perfect sense in the context of the game, he is the embodiment of Jenova, he also is part human which means he has a part of the planet in him or he "IS" in a sense but because he has Jenova cells since he was a fetus... well he can't simply just go back to the lifestream, Sephiroth like everyone else when returned to the planet keep their consciousness and so anyone that has Jenova cells in them are still walking around.... he can just take over their body and remold it after a time into himself, Cloud constantly fights with Sephiroths will in the original due to Jenova cells' influence in his body, Kadaj in AC also took Jenova cells into him and transformed into Sephiroth IMMEDIATELY meaning sephiroth was waiting for that moment to happen, its no stretch that he could know as much as what the planet knows now that he is a part of the lifestream but has the inherent capabilities to be immortal granted that the Jenova cells are still present in a person
This convoluted timeline garbage is nothing more than the devs shitting on us fans that have been asking for a decade for a game with MODERN GRAPHICS and relatively updated core game design...
Yet, I'm not a die hard final fantasy fan.
so you're a fan of time travelling, alternate timeline bullshit?
@@GeranBeast
Yeah when handled correctly said bullshit is actually kinda fun and namura has plenty of competent people to rein in is weird ideas so
@@tonydanatop4912 yeah, because ff13, ff15, and KH are totally not convoluted shit stains of a story. because the stories of ff13, ff15, and KH really captured people's hearts the same way ff7's story did. yep, given the track record, im sure this time, those competent people will totally rein in nomura's fanfiction down a notch.
@@sabrakt I respect your opinion and if that's how you truly feel then the clear option should be not to support them.
FFVII Remake ending in a nutshell? “Let the past die, kill it if you have to. It’s the only way to become who you were meant to be.”
YES, for me, this was SOOOOOOOOOOO amazing, i mean, such courage to do this!! Opens up the entire potential of a great story
The developers have outdone themselves.
I love video games like this that turned a known Universe or what you thought or expecting completely over your head upside down.
Agreed! Lots of hate on this remake but I am almost entirely happy with it!
They don't have that sort of talent or capability to make that big of a game. Hence an only Midgar FF7 Remake.
@@Shadowfox1300 I'm wondering if maybe it means that player choices can change the way the story plays out.
@@marhawkman303 What choices?
So just because it's not going your way your now comparing it to other things that's just sad.
So basically, the whisperers are the old developers shouting...
"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GUYS DOING WITH OUR MASTERPIECE!"
@@CustardBustard Exactly. I want to tattoo this on my face.
So, "re:make" is not really a "remake" word that we expected before, but it's a main plot of this story now, just like if there's a trilogy it would be remake, and with other re: re: re: re: words, like reborn, rebound, rebirth, or reunion
Heh... "Reunion"... now that word carries a special significance.
I just wanna see Zack and Aerith back together in another timeline. Because Zack was trying his hardest to get back to her
Aoife, do you plan on doing a live where you give your thoughts about the game ? I would very much love to hear what you liked/disliked and where you thing the game is heading in the future. Thx. :)
