    A Dutch Bucket system is a system used in hydroponics to sort of recycle the water. Hydroponics is growing plants in water instead of soil/compost. I googled this! You're welcome :)

    Growing vegetables you plan on eating in a bucket that contained rat poison is probably not a good idea, plus the pastic used for those buckets is not food grade, so there are two reason not to use. Any bakery or deli, grocery store with a bakery, will have free buckets that are free and food grade quality.

    • @Eddygeek18
      @Eddygeek18 7 лет назад +4

      honestly the amount of shit and chemicals they spray on fields of your raw lettuce, cucumbers, corn and whatever else i wouldn't worry about a trace amounts of rat poisoning in a bucket

    • @TheFritz423
      @TheFritz423 7 лет назад +1

      You could eat a chunk of rat poison and probably be okay (I wouldn't). The trace amounts in the plastic are negligible.

    • @tannenbaum3444
      @tannenbaum3444 7 лет назад +1

      Eddygeek18 Generally, when you raise your own vegetables, the intent is to get away from all those chemicals, not to add, especially not rat poisoning. Most Bakery Depts in grocery stores, give large buckets away of free...I don't know anyone who would even consider feeding their family food grown in rat poisoning containers. Plastic absorbs it's contents.

    • @tannenbaum3444
      @tannenbaum3444 7 лет назад +2

      TheFritz423 In reality, they should be food grade containers, the kind grocery stores use for baked goods decorating, but never, ever, anything that contained rat poisoning.

    • @TheFritz423
      @TheFritz423 7 лет назад +3

      That's the difference between being a zealot and a pragmatist. I'd rather eat food that I know is prepared with common sense and an eye to quality. I don't really mind if the wood I use for my garden boxes was treated with chemicals to preserve it from rot as long as the risk to me and my family is minimal.

    I would have to say the rat poison probably permeated the plastic in those buckets and soaking them constantly will likely leach the poison right into the plants, therefore slowly poisoning anyone who consumes them. The design is nice, basic hydroponics, but if you are going to do this use clean materials. BigGuy Bob...I love your garden, great use of space!

    Very informative video. What I do like about your system is the consistency with materials (other than the buckets, and those are so darn expensive). PVC piping looks neater and much better and I like that the nutrient feed can be switched off on a bucket if it's getting too much. Really good work.

      @@600gleable IT is a form of Hydroponics, some people use 4" pipes, in this episode we are using buckets. Fair enough! They will still work. I don't like the 1/4 turn valves, I would prefer a float of some kind to allow and stop water (Nutrients), specially if they go away for a week or so. Gravity fed is the cheapest way to go.

    Wow, what a great idea! Using cheap PVC, This would be great with my tiny guest house to water all the flower beds that go all the way around it, where last year after it was finished with the build and all was planted I was blown away at the costs of my water bill. I use a well that my late husband had put in with an to system that turns on at the same time of day to water all the main house grass, trees, & all my many flowers and flowering bushes. While we had county water and sewer for the house it's self, but thought that without his intelligent mind to come up for something for that area that this summer I wasn't sure if I'd be able to water them at all with that kind of water bill that's always twenty something during the winter months! So I certainly thank you for sharing your inventive idea's as I was lost with no idea that i could do something like this, but am so glad that you did, please thank your wife for sharing your ideas with us that lost our husband's in my case at a very young age! I will have to rewatch it as to get all the exact info. but I saved it just for that. God bless you and all those that are dearest to you!

      Where I reside it rarely rains, you get clouds coming over but no rain. So I am in the process of building a copper pipe condenser via a peltier (thermo electric peltier cooler water system) that will cool the water being pumped through the copper pipe done as a coil. Water condenses on the coil which I will collect into a water tank. With solar the 60 watt power use will cost zero while the sun is out.

    my bucket system worked great BUT I put it in the wrong place to close to my other beds so I am moving them. I use dark Buckets the don't grow moss or algae. the video was to show how I make them. my system is dark buckets. lowes Gray ones are ok but light still gets through. but black get HOT here in Texas. my system is also getting moved because I am setting up a new Fish room and the water will drain in the sump for my system feeding the plants.

    I have a question , what are you growing in the buckets, and are they just hooked up to water hose or gutters?
    And at 7:51 you said it's your "West wall" ...that the sun rises over here...I think that's your East wall...
    Tomatoes might grow good there...

    For those still curious a Dutch Bucket is a component of a fragmented media bed system. Think of it like this, a group at a restaurant sit at a large table when the bill comes the individuals each pay their portion of the bill, even though they are all part of one group, this is called dutch. Dutch buckets are media filled buckets each holding specific plants. The collection of these buckets make up the whole of a garden bed.

    • @j3utton
      @j3utton 7 лет назад +37

      You can look at this guys other videos for context, which would tell you it's an aquaponics setup. The water supply is a giant fish tank somewhere else in his yard. These buckets will have media (rocks or hardened clay pebbles or something) with plants in them. Fish water will be constantly poured over them and the plants will extract the nutrients (fish poop) out of it filtering the water for the fish. In these systems people generally grow tilapia in the tanks and veggies in the media beds supplying them a lot of fresh food from a closed system that, once set up, doesn't cost a whole lot to operate.

    Two items, well maybe more. I have discovered empty cat litter buckets [yellow square ones] can be had for free if you ask around. Second thing, I have had wonderful luck using 5 gallon paint strainer inserts and pearlite as a grow media. Lighter and cheaper than clay and fill to only about 3 gallons. Also, instead of the large pvc pipe and valves for each bucket, I use a fountain pump feeding drip irrigation pipe as a manifold and inserting emitters with 1/4' tubing into each bucket. I run the pump via a timer set to 30 minutes 5 times a day. It grows giant tomatoes for me in Illinois.

      Greg, I did that too last year. In Texas my tomato plants grew leggy and all the bottom leaves died until I had a six foot stalk with no tomatoes. I did have nice algae growing in my perlite. I used 3 gallon icing buckets from Kroger with the paint strainers. Great luck for you....yours grew....mine died. We have hot sun here. Thanks for your comments. Phyllis

      "I use Lowes or Home Depot buckets"
      I use Found brand buckets exclusively. If there is a restaurant in your town, drive around back every time you pass that way. They use them regularly for Lard, Oil, pickles, etc. Construction sites (esp large development sites) toss Drywall buckets - and many other usable commodities - in those Dumpsters .
      I have scored as many as ten buckets (often with the lids) from a single restaurant and can honestly say I have never bought a bucket!

      CLureCo Oh no no no no... you can't wash the fungicide from hydraulic oil out of polyethylene plastic. Some of those fungicides/biocides are amazingly toxic. Pick up a 5 gallon bucket which was used for dill pickles to prove it to yourself. Try the same wash you used and see if you can still smell the pickling spices. I'll bet you $100 that no matter how many washes you use, you'll still smell the spices *_clearly_*.

      Regardless of what you say, or add, or whatever explanation you have; you made a video, clearly showing poisoned buckets, you must be dense. People watch videos and think if that's ok, then any old bucket will do. They may never notice or understand any explanation and these comments are not an adequate place to try and warn them.

      This is a lie, blatant lie. Don't confuse Facts with bullshit opinions. "May 2016, a working group of 23 scientists from 10 countries reviewed nearly 500 relevant epidemiological studies and determined that coffee had no carcinogenic effect for pancreatic, female breast and prostate cancers. The risk was reduced for liver and uterine endometrium cancers, and evidence was inadequate for any conclusion to be drawn for more than 20 other cancers." Science dumbass, try it sometime. Just admit to the stupidity of using your waste poison buckets and get on with it, stop making yourself look more like an idiot.
