This is a really nice way to diy these systems. I love the idea with the rubber grommet, as it is reducing cost. I also like the nets you put into the buckets, although I could not find any of these to buy. For what it's worth, I'd like to share some different approaches I took in my dutch bucket system, which I personally like: - Fix the supply line to the wood, not the buckets. It makes it easy to swap out buckets. If you put the supply line on the same side as the drain pipe, you can just stick the drip emitter into the pipe. - Use standard irrigation tubing with the little thingies that you can poke a hole into your supply line. Much faster & cheap. - The small 4mm (1/8") micro tubing is sufficient. This will also reduce your problems on longer lines. - I use drip emitters with a little stake, so the line does not fall out on accident and drain your entire reservoir onto the ground. - I use 60/40 coco choir / perlite. That's preference, 100% perlite will word. There are up- and downsides, depending on your crop. - You did not mention your timer settings. I set my timer on 15 min for four times a day. - Finally, for a commercial grow I'd use bato buckets. They are not that expensive and the time savings are worth the extra buck per bucket. Thanks for the video!!
Im assuming the watering recirculates? How do/often to clean? What can/not be planted? What I need to install grow lights like I read need to be installed if I were growing things hydroponically indoors? Also are these buckets with perlite only used for starting to process, replanting something that has already sprouted, or from start to finish? I apologize for all the questions have never done anything like this but I want to very badly.
Water recirculates saving water. Just top off water, clean maybe once a year if needed. Literally anything can be planted. Even have papaya trees in the buckets. Grow lights indoors are needed. If only leafy plants you only need 6100K cheap LED. If flowering types like tomato and pepper you would need full spectrum lights. You can transplant anything into the buckets or start from seed. Thanks for the questions. Hope tis helped.
If you put your grouments in hot water,. They will become soft and easy to install. also, if you cut your PVC pipe on a slight angle it also is much easier to install into the grommets.
11:40 Hey you mention keeping algae down. Is the idea that you're putting the tubing down a few inches into the perlite, so that the top layer - exposed to light - stays dry? Algae grows so readily where I am it's insane
Yes, but it still stays moist, so the best way to combat the algae is H2O2. Light spray of diluted solution and also some in your nutient tank takes care of the problem. (also great for the plants) I will do a full video on that next week.
Depends on weather and plant size. I start at 15 minutes - 3 times a day. Check to see if moist below surface to adjust. Mid summer I do 5-6 times a day with large plants. Thanks
With 270-300 gph pumps, 14 is about max if you do the tubing as shown at the end of the video. Rather not do too many anyway because it it easier to keep the nutrients full and controlled. Also the electric usage of that size pump is very low. Thanks
Hi, love the channel! I'm from South Africa, and just starting my system now. I have a question I hope you could answer. I see you have a cobble floor for your greenhouse, any specific reason why? I am thinking of a concrete floor for mine, would you advise that or not, and if not why?
We have different floors in multiple greenhouses to test. Concrete is nice, but expensive. Gravel on top of heavy plastic, to keep weeds out, works good but not as easy to walk on and not good for wheels. We put a painted wood (osb) floor on top of the gravel in the walkways to solve this. Been great now for 8 years. Rubber mats on top also works great.
You can use gravel. You will need to water more often or even continually because the gravel does not hold much moisture. I have used gravel with great success. The net may not be needed if the gravel will not get into the tube. The net also keeps dirt, roots etc out of the tubes and water supply.
Do you have a product # or something on the grommets you use for buckets was looking at Grainger and they have way to many in the 3/4 size like how thick between the (flaps?) distance for a watertight seal on the bucket ect.
How long and how often should tomatoes be watered when growing in perlite? I bet once a day for an hour with kingrollers 2 liters per hour? Will it be ok?
I understand this system (flood and drain) is better for tomatoes than a continuous or NFT system. Is this why you are using this system? What else grows better in the system?
So what happened to the 1/2 inch sch 40 pipe ? Lacing that tubing thru all the bucket handles makes it impossible to remove one bucket without unlacing the tubing. You will have algae and wind problems with the perlite if you don't use lids on the buckets. Windy day and greenhouse door suddenly opens, perlite dust storm. Your stand is also not very stable.
Been working great for over 10 years. There is nothing perfect, especially to be affordable for everyone. We don't lace the tubing anymore anyway - easy fix.
You can use perlite, coco coir, clay pebbles, small gravel, mixtures. Just make sure it drains well, is free of disease, and check the PH. Watering times are more often with gravel and hydroton. Perlite is sterile and no PH problems, but most anything will work. Thanks
Question ☝️ how do you stop the vegetables from tasting like the solution? I did a hydroponic system with herbs and cherry tomatoes. I noticed the cherry tomatoes tasted just like the feed solution I added in the water. How do you weed that away from the ripened tomatoes, but still have others growing?
Using the MasterBlend 3 part nutrients, Our tomatoes, peppers beans, lettuce all taste amazing. Make sur your PH levels are correct for the plants to use the nutrients.
Watched your video. Was intrigued. Went to the website. Absolutely worthless. Then I tried to contact you by email. More wasted time. Then I called you. The person who answered was obviously over-indulging in what you actually grow. I put my wallet back.
Don't know who you are, but I have never talked to you and you did not show up as a visitor on the website. I think you need to check your facts before negative comments. I answer all calls and messages. Thanks

The nets are paint strainers- found at a paint/hardware store..
Been using dutch buckets for about 10 years. Great system! This was a great presentation-very well done.
Thanks. We are going on about 15 years now as well.
Hi John.
For a familie, if I have 10 bucket system how do I decide on nutriments - especially if I stage the vegatbles growing cycle?
Thanks for the yummy info and comedy segments... lol, Cheers!
Thank you from heart. Love!
Thanks for another excellent video, Bobby!
Great video.
Thanks!
If you put a party cup upside down through that pipe and puncture some holes in it it keeps the roots from growing into your pipe
run the drill saw backwards on plastic and its cut smooth, no burs.
Nice planters
Thank you for this video
thanks for the tip
Please wear a mask when pouring perlite. I find the dust is very heavy. Be careful, Sir. I wish you health
Hunted for hours For 1 person to explain How to do 5 dwc WOW thank you !!! What kit?
Just found your channel. I love your personality! New subbie here!💚🌿🪴🌱

Do you no where I can get the netting that goes in the bucket and the pearllite thank you in advance
Netting at www.completegrowing.com Perlite either Amazon or feed store or landscape stoes.
Very good 😊 and super
Are you still in business? We are in Barbados looking for systems to set up. 1st time viewing hoping to see an aquaponics addition
Yes. Sent you an email today. Thanks
What watering schedule should I program my timers too?

Do you run this 24/7 or on a timer
Timer. Depending on plant size and weather/temps, 2 - 5 times a day for 15 minutes each time.
its really hard to get these buckets in europe

Mitre saw is good for cutting piping.

www.completegrowing has all the right size, quality parts you might need.
Have a link for your buckets?
www.completegrowing.com
What pump did you use?
290 GPH sub. Brands change. but all made the same.
How long and how often should tomatoes be watered when growing in perlite? I bet once a day for an hour with kingrollers 2 liters per hour? Will it be ok?
I am glad Hansel McDonald left that life of modelling and that Derek Zoolander, to be a farmer. It's healthier.
Hi Ahmed is calling what type of solution that use it
We use the Masterblend 3 part nutrient. We have it on our website. www.CompleteGrowing.com
Have you had a situation where even with the mesh the bucket drain gets clogged from the perlite? Some of mine did when I was setting up my system.
Yes, but only in rare cases. Fixed by putting some gravel or clay pebbles in the bottom of the bucket for better drainage.
use a net
i cant find these 4 gallon square green buckets?
www.completegrowing.com just bought another 10,000 of them
I understand this system (flood and drain) is better for tomatoes than a continuous or NFT system. Is this why you are using this system? What else grows better in the system?
Seems like everything we have grown grows better. I do like the leafy greens better in the float systems we use. Thanks
where did you get the netting?
www.completegrowing.com
is it a problem if the water is left to flow constantly through the buckets
No. Just not needed. Make sure the medium you are using drains very well to avoid root rot.
Will the pvc leach toxins inthe water under the sun?
it would be nice to know what size pump he used
website shows all the details. www.completegrowing.com - It is a 290gph pump.
could you grow grapes in a dutch bucket system?
I have grown everything from root crops to small trees, so I don't see why not. Just make sure your nutrients are right for grapes.
Link to grommets 🙏
www.completegrowing.com Keep going down the page, they are near the end.
Thanks

No. It is the same as used for home plumbing/water supply.
smart desigm
Where can I get a pro life
Need more information. Thanks
Would like to see the plants in stalled
Or you can wire tie the hoses to the buckets just drill a hole in the top
Yep. Lots of options which makes this fun and easy.
Thanks
You should be wearing a mask when pouring that dry perlite Mr.
why is this better than DWC?
More options for plants. Root crops can be grown and tomatoes etc have more support for growth. DWC is also great for all the leafy plants.
Thanks
Why do you need the tube on the side can’t you just leave the whole
Water supply pressure
how much perlite does it take to fill all 10 buckets?
About 4 cubic feet - do not fill them to the top - 3/4 full is good. Thanks for watching.
@@rplatow4120 could I use the square yellow kitty litter buckets it has pp triangle with a 5 in it

Flush the tank and run with just water for a period before harvest

@@MarshallSmash That would work if you are harvesting all of them at the same time, if not all, then how?

The algae IS A PROBLEM….over time
Easily fixed with H2O2
I think crop king is cheaper
Does not include everything. They are actually a lot more if you do a true comparison including shipping etc.
@@completegrowing5427 not to me at all. I just bought a bunch from them. 40 nft 100 Beto buckets and more. But to each their own
every time I see a farmer drilling holes in pipe I cringe just use fittings its not that much more expensive any you get a professional build quality
I would not drill if there was any water pressure involved. I am an engineer first. Used for drainage only so works great and more versatile.
Perlite is a big NO+NO when it comes to breathing. This is where a face mask is actually highly recommended.
That is correct.
