    I don't know if anyone has said it but I will...It takes a wonderful, caring person to take the time to help everyone out with gardening. You are not selling any products, and you allow people to learn the best way of gardening by your mistakes so they don't make them. Doing that you are saving everyone us time and money.. I salute you and I know you well be blessed.... Thank you so much

    Nicejob. I've seen the system taken one step further and made into an aquaponic system. You could make your reservoir bigger, put a mess of perch in there and you have anaquaponic system. The fish keep the plants healthy, the plants keep the waterclean. Set your pump up on a car battery/inverter and solar panel to keep it charged.

    Just a thought: If you use just a small 1 inch square of paint strainer mesh you can slip that over the pipe going in the container then slip the elbow over it. This will simply put the filter in the pipe and you wont have to but but maybe 1 of the meshes for 100 or so buckets.

    BTW from year to year the paint bags degrade and some perlite might get through, thus the reason for fiter bag.

    it seems like to me that pea gravel would be better for the environment than pearlite and be easier to reuse and be cheaper if you buy it by the truck load.. you get one load and just keep going back to it over and over again.. it could also be used for many other purposes around the house. It also removes the need for a paint strainer.

    Hello I wanted to start out by saying that I love your videos. My question is what you thought of using pea gravel and perlite together. I was thinking that I would put some pea gravel in the bottom half of the bucket and perlite in the top half. The reason being is that it get so windy out here in Calhan Co i thought that the pea gravel would work for two reasons. One to add weight to the buckets and the other to keep the perlite from going through the bucket. Basically allowing me not to have to use the paint strainers.

    • @chriscook1468
      @chriscook1468 4 года назад

      Why not use pea gravel for the whole thing. It is drastically cheaper, just heavier. Maybe that is the trick. Buy it in quantity from a gravel yard/pit. Might not want to move the buckets. They will weigh a lot. Maybe, put a false bottom. Those roots don't seem to be going very deep anyway.

    This is the first video I've found that has a demonstration of how the bucket drains internally. Thank you for that.
    Well made and informative. Want to try the ebb and flow method, but don't want to spend a fortune on the actual bato bucket

    This is a great, very thorough video, and you deserve to be commended for it. However, at around the 16:00 mark, with the air stones, you are correct. They are absolutely unnecessary. Air stones aerate the water by disturbing the surface; that's what the bubbles are for. The bubbles themselves add zero air to the water. Because your water is in motion, running through a pump and then your feed-tubing system, the surface tension of the water is broken while it's in motion, and aerates itself while running out of the tube into the bucket.
    But I am quite grateful for the way you set this video up; how you went through everything. I'm looking at a hydroponics setup myself, just as an experiment, and this is the most helpful tutorial video I've found thus far. Thanks for taking the time to put it together.

      You are incorrect in your statement about how air stones add oxygen to the water. They create small bubbles with a high surface area which increases air dissolving in the solution. Disrupting the surface tension has no bearing.

    • @bradsimpson8724
      @bradsimpson8724 8 лет назад +1

      Absolutely it does. Given a bubble ladder and sufficient time to climb it(once common in CO2 systems in planted aquariums), the bubbles will slowly shrink, dissolving gas into the water. However, at the relatively high rate of speed that bubbles climb from the airstone directly to the surface, very little of that takes place.
      However, by disrupting the high surface tension that a body of still water has, oxygen above the surface has an easier time entering the water, typically to a level of approximately 7ppm(dependent upon altitude). This is why fast flowing rivers, which have very low surface tension, are more highly oxygenated than still lakes and ponds. The easiest way to see this in effect is to look at an undisturbed marsh or pond, and look at the layer of crud formed on the surface. These heavy particles(relative to oxygen) are supported by the surface tension of the water(buoyancy plays a part as well, obviously, as it does with oxygen).
      You're welcome to have any opinion on the matter that you'd like. However, the science very solidly and unquestioningly backs up my statement, and I stand by it.

    I grew in soil loaded fabric pot. The fabric pots allow the roots to 'air prune'. The result is a fine / dense root system much like the one you see on his examples. No 'runner' roots looking for soil. The entire pot becomes a root ball of fine roots. awesome growth.

    I like how you think of and share real world alternatives. So many hydrophonic videos end up being large scale commercial, rich men's games. I'm on Social Security in the US, but plan to move to the Philippines. I hope to learn as much as I can now, and take what I learn with me. My real interest is aquaphonics, but I found your video very useful.

    I've done dutch bucket tomatoes for years. I never use any growing medium such as perlite or rocks. I use nothing in my buckets but Masterblend and water for the nutrient solution. I do use an air pump to keep the water oxygenated. You might want to change the water Masterblend solution every few weeks. My setup works great!
