- In-depth video of Katy's hydroponic, Dutch bucket tomatoes nutrient solution, how she mixes it, her tank and pump system, and other growing tips. We included specific measurements and the types of nutrients that are in the formula. Then, Devon shows how to get hydroponic cucumbers trained on the bobbin strings and a quick tour to see all of the updates in the greenhouse. We do an unboxing of our new order of wire hanging baskets with coco liner at the end. Look for homemade hanging basket videos soon!

Ya'll should get one of those stirrers that's used for paint it would stir your nutrients in better and faster. Just found your channel a few days ago so far I've loved every one so far. Keep up the great work.
Your farm looks fantastic and you seem like a lovely family , good fortunes to you and your work.
Thank you! You too!
I look at you and I see your Mothers Smile but, when I look at your Mom I see your smile. Isn't that ust wonderful? Thanks for sharing your Greenhouse activities, we very much enjoy watching your content. Don't forget to create a "why we built a greenhouse and how we did that" video!
Couple of hints: 1/ If you mix in your acid to your stock water before adding in your nutrients you will probably only need about half of the acid you are using now. All due to ion chemistry which I won't get into now. Just ensure your plants are not hit with too low a pH between adding your acid & adding your nutrients. 2/ Always add your calcium nitrate to your stock water before adding in your Hydrogrow. Again, it is all to do with ion chemistry reactions, but swapping around the order of adding your 2 separate nutrient solutions to your stock tank will result in less calcium coming out of solution over the next couple of days. Don't just take my word for it, try it & see for yourself :) 3/ Use a short stiff hair broom instead of PVC pipe to mix up your nutrients. Really easy!
Keep up the entertaining vids!
If calcium is precipitating out of solution you should switch the ph down from phosphoric to nitric acid.
Hmm, interesting, Started using MasterBlend and everyone keeps saying mix the CalNit last. Will have to give your way a go, thanks.
@@gloriouspopemantom373 Yes, I know most people (& even Masterblend) say to mix the calcium nitrate last, however it is the calcium that reacts with the trace elements to then form an insoluble mixture of compounds in the bottom of your nutrient tank. If you mix the calcium nitrate first, the calcium levels are no longer concentrated & so they won't react with such vigor when you later add the trace elements.
@@derekgore1268 When there are A and B powders when you buy nutrients, is one of the powders only calcium nitrate?
@@chrisjowaisas95 if it is the Masterblend the second part should be the CalNitrate. The first part has the rest of the nutrients with epson salt already mixed together. It should be labeled to state what it is. CalNitrate is typically small lightweight white balls.
Thank you for another great video. Can you please, show us how greenhouse winter heating system work and which type of grow lights used?
Of course! We are currently planning a technical tour video with my dad soon. He designed the heating system. We only have fluorescent grow lights over the nursery. The lights over the rest of the greenhouse are just so we can see to work when it's dark.
This was incredibly wholesome.
Glad you like!!
Thank you Katy, thank you Devon
You are very welcome 🙏
Wow...very useful information..can please share the details of nutrients given to the tomatos by stage wise...that means from the seedling stage to harvesting stage...
That is one clean operation.
Hi Devon tuned in to watch your video and see you’re beautiful smile!!!☺️☺️
Thank you! Hope you are doing well 💚😊🍅
Beautifull one and beautifull work
@@HomegrownPassion beautifull lady and beautifull work
I always buffer water PH to 6.1-6.3 first.
Then I dissolve the NPK 4-18-38 with water and add to tank.
Then I dissolve Epsom salt and add to tank.
Then dissolve the Calcium Nitrate and add to tank, then measure PH again and buffer to 6.1-6-3.
Then measure EC to target 2.6.2-8 for mature plants or 3.2-3-3 for young plants.
Higher EC for young plants?
I really enjoy your videos. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
This is the first video I found of you guys and I'm impressed with your setup.
Where are you based out of? You mentioned yoder and amish country, would you be talking about the amish community in Yoder, KS? If so, I'm not too far from there and would love to come visit your greenhouse
Thank you very much! We are in Ohio between Cleveland and Columbus. There is very large Amish community 30 minutes from us. It a fun place to check out. Lots of good shops and old fashioned stores.
I was curious as well. Being born in Lancaster, its known as amish country. And then I saw a Florida hat and got excited I could come visit. But your up north! Enjoyed the video.
Hi ladies, Question, or sort of a question. I just got my first Crop King 10-36 system, and had a heck of a time building the table. I built it wrong by putting rails on the pole that the legs are attached to to, instead of on the legs themselves. Anyway, I fixed it. My question is, can you show me how the drain system is attached? I read the instruction's, but they do NOT do any justice in how it should look as I am trying to build it. Also, I am using to 100 gallon tub, do you think I should get the blue barrels for nutrients in the future? I'm using the Master Blend nutrients. I like how you mom mixes the nutrients separately, I'll start doing that. Love you guy's channel, keep up the great work!
I will have to look into that. Not sure how it is supposed to drain. Do you have a container to catch discharge then recirculate?
One of our dog's names is Petunia. Can't wait to see a market video. Thank you.
That's a lovely name! I'm looking forward to making market videos.
Nice Love the setup ❤❤❤❤🙋♂️🙋♂️
I noticed that when your getting water together for the initial dilution I think you mentioned "warm water" is that correct? If yes does it help the mixing the dilute? I haven't tried doing that but it makes sense to me rather trying to do the same in cold water. Good job
Yes, warm water helps the dissolve. we also fill the barrels and let them sit a few hours to disburse chlorine. (We have tap water)
I am just soaking all this knowledge in!! It seems like the same nutrient mix for most things you grow.
There is so much to learn, we are still learning too! I have different recipes for the leafy greens and vine crops. They use almost the same nutrients, but different ratios,
@@HomegrownPassion thank you! Yes, I’m still on a postage stamp lot on Oahu, but my dream is to join you guys in that kind of life at some point :-)
When you mix the nutrients for the nfts, do the other veggies do well on the lettuce formula? Like the cabbages and fennel?
Yes, they do. Anything I have grown in the NFT channels does well. The only nutrients that are different are the plants in the Bato Buckets (Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, green beans etc. are using a modified vine crop formula. My next video is going to be on nutrients.
Looks like a interesting video I'll be watching the rest later. Just subscribed.
Awesome! Thank you and let me know if you have any questions 💚
Amazing and so good of you to share..can I ask was it trial and error with mixing and with the leaf vegetables adding iron.did you get advice .im asking because what you and your family have done and are doing in such a short time is amazing especially all the success your having .love the video again thankyou so much for all your effort it has such an uplifting affect as well as being informative..take care devon and love to the family from over the pond 😆 paul x
It was a mixture of trial and error, research and advice. We appreciate that! We all have fun trying different things and seeing what works best. I'm glad to get the postive review, it means a lot. Take care too! Thanks, Paul 💚😊
EC 2.3-2.5 pH 5.7
Hydro Gro Vine : NPK = (4.4-13-34) (Mg=3.7)
Cacium Nitrate : NPK = (15.5-0-0)(Ca=26)
Ratio approximately : 1 part Hydro Gro Vine, 1 part calcium nitrate
Is that right???
Thanks for pretty cool video. Greeting from Tajikistan:))
I have a question that concerns growing tomatoes in a dutch bucket system our tomatoes are at a height of 7-8 feet we've had blooms and good growth early on at the lower levels of the plants. We prune and maintain our plants twice a week. problem we are having is very few blooms and no production on the upper levels of the plants. Should we cut the tops of our plants to encourage more blooms and production? any suggestion would be appreciated.
Make sure you take off suckers and leave just one stalk. Pollinate everyday
How do you get the water that drains from the dutch buckets that are sitting on the ground back to the nutrition tub? Are they on some kind of pump, or is there a slope to your concrete?
the greenhouse was built with a 6% slope they sit on a pipe. Check out the other videos on bato buckets and you can see how they are set up.
I have a "First Time" Dutch Bucket System and am having a BOAT LOAD of problems. My PH is between 550-680 all the time. BUT, by TDS seems to be off by a lot, I mixed the Nutrients Master Blend. at 2grm per gal, Calcium Nitrate at .8grm per gal and epsom salts at 1.2grm per gal. I have a 34 Gal Sump and am mixing 80 grm of M.B., 25 grm of C. N. and 40grm of Epsom salts. All my tomatoes. Zucchini and Cucumbers are wilting. What am I doing WRONG? Thanks,
I have a super small (3 plants) tomato Dutch bucket system in my basement under a grow light. I did the first set up following your recommended nutrients but here I am 3 weeks later and my nutrients read the same on my ec meter. Do I just keep using the water until the ec drops? So I need to add more or change out the water? I don’t see any algae growth currently.
I'm not sure i would just watch growth make sure no yellowing. our ec changes up or down all depending on uptake from plants. if there rowing well just let them go I would say
What is your bato bucket setting, recirculating or drain to waste? Really enjoy your videos, awesome
Drain to waste
I use for A npk 12-12-36 me 850g
Nitrat of potasium 350g
Sulfat of magnezium 400g in 10l water
B nitrat of coliseum 1000g sthelat of fe eddha 6% 35g for 10liter and i use A and B 1 liter from each for 100liters of water.
Hi,
EC is always 2.3 from beginning till end? Ty!
one more question, where did you find the filters?
Do you recycle the drain water from the Bato buckets back through the system or do you discharge it to the drain? Thank you for the videos.
Of course! It is discharged to the drain. We try to set the timers so only a small amount is actually drained out.
Again good day God bless your family😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you! God bless! 🥬🙏
please let me know what fertiliser materials your are using?
Hello what nutrients you added to you plant as lettuce or tomatoes thabks you
How do you pollinate your plants?
we use an electric toothbrush for the tomatoes everything else is self-pollinating.
Really enjoy your channel. Do you have problems with cucumber pollination? I use a camel hair brush. Is there a better way or a plant that works in the greenhouse? Thanks!!
Thanks, Tom! We have self pollinating cucumbers, and they do pretty well. The variety is called Tyra. We do have to pollinate the tomatoes and we use an old electric toothbrush.
@@HomegrownPassion Awesome, thank you. I raise Rebelski and Sun gold, they seem to self pollinate well, think it might be the circulation fans. Thanks Again!!
Hi where do you get your calcium and hydro grow thanks Carmen
We buy all our nutrients in bulk and use a recipe that was formulated for us based on our tap water. Nutrients were purchased from CropKing. They are about an hour from us so we can go and pick them up from their facility saving on shipping.
Where do you acquire your fertilizer what company
CropKing sells us our nutrients. Let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you
where in the video you sit on the buckets? like cover photo/
We just took that photo as a separate thumbnail pic. Why???
@@HomegrownPassion i like shots of simple seats in videos
Do you cycle your nutrients? Meaning do you run it for a while and it's off for a while or is it continuous?
I should specify for your lettuce.
It runs continuously for the lettuce.
Thank you so much.... 😊
Bon courage
i would love to work in your green house, i would do it for free to learn and gain experience!
Wonderful greenhouse, i have a simple question is it possible to have this kind of set up here in the Philippines? Thank you and God Bless. 😊
Thank you so much! It definitely possible. Have you heard of J&Gs backyard lettuce? He builds hydroponic systems, is very nice, has great videos, always responds to comments and is in the Philippines. Here's the channel link. God Bless 💚

@@HomegrownPassion i saw some of his videos they were awesome too, i thought your set-up is different from his hahaha! Thank you for your quick response appreciate it much, love from the Philippines! 🥰
Hi, how often do you completely change the nutrient solution with that size of reservoir?
The reservoir is 1200 gallons, and we monitor the salt in solution to determine when we need to do a nutrient water change. But I would say every 6-7 weeks. We keep the water and use it in our high tunnel.
Thank you. I have a 200 gallon tank that I drain once I topped fresh water of same amount. I live in tropical country and lettuce are drinking water like crazy. I may be unecessarily draining usable nutrients. I learn a lot from your channel
Can you tell me the name of ingredients please I need to buy but I don’t know the names please help me
Sure....what are you growing and what kind of set up do you have
What are the dimensions of that greenhouse?. And is the floor concrete only in the pathways - and the rest bare soil covered by weed mat?
The greenhouse is 5000 square feet, and yes the pathways and the floor under the Dutch buckets are concrete. The rest has weed mat with gravel on top.
@@HomegrownPassion thank you. So you put a layer of weed mat down - and then how thick is the layer of gravel?I know that where you are in the US gets very cold in winter. Do you heat the nutrient and the greenhouse then?
I think you want to add calcium nitrate first?
Hello-----I can just see you in a canoe and up the creek without a paddle and here you are with a couple pieces of PVC plastic pipe trying to row to the shore. PVC pipe makes a very poor stir stick simply because it is round. Make one out of wood with dimensions of something like: 1&1/2 by 1/2 inch to 2 by 3/4 inches and however long you want. I think you will see much better stirring action.-----Lynn
Where did you buy your gutter systems
They are from CropKing. Here is the link.

Homegrown Passion thank you much, I tried this in the yard late in season, had no yield but I know it works and was amazed at the growth rate of peppers and tomato plants and how full they were. Thinking of micro greens to sell locally but with Covid still affecting forecasts I have no idea if logistically I should even touch this
Homegrown Passion go figure, I’m within driving distance of this company lol
They have really nice hydroponic supplies. We love the Dutch buckets too. It is pretty cool how fast and big every thing grows in hydroponics.
Homegrown Passion yes, I was most impressed my growth, size of leaves and color was amazing which furthers the point from a lot of people who do this with farming experience....the US has dying soil and I have no idea how we haven’t put the type of vertical infrastructure in like Japan has been doing for years
Where did you get your pH controller at
I'm pretty sure it is from CropKing, but I'll have to ask Katy.
Good luck 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you 🙌
wow dam good education ladys
Hey Yall! This is awesome! I also grow tomatoes in my channel! Where is your farm located??
Hi Farmer Dre! Just subbed to you. I need to watch your orchard and berry videos. I have a few trees/plants, but I need to learn how to take better care of them. We are in Ohio.
@@HomegrownPassion Awesome! Thanks! If you have any questions about anything dont hesitate to ask!
Where did your mom learn that tomatoes need extra potassium after their third flower cluster? I learned something new today.
She learned that from the horticulturalist at CropKing. It really helps the plants put out lots of tomatoes.
@@HomegrownPassion Thank you for the reply!~
Great content and love the work. Would you mind telling the variety of tomatoes you have planted here?
Thanks! The ones in the video are rebelski and we also plant beorange.

Hi Devon & Kathy..
Hey Chris, how have you been?
Hello , I find your lecture very useful and practical. I'm in Ghana in West Africa. I really want to try a simple non circularatory setup to practice here. Have you ever costed ,calculate for RUclips viewers electricity , nutrient cost, water , versus weight of produce ?
That's an interesting perspective to consider! It's important to think about all aspects of production and consumption. I have never taken it down to that level

Just great. 5 stars 🌟 for u.

Hallo 👍🌷
Hello again my friend! 🥬🍅
Hlov
you know what tastes much better...tomatoes grown in the ground
Wrong. I win tomato tasting contests at my farmers market almost every year against tomatoes grown in the grown. You just never had a good hydroponic tomato.
Must be sell really expensive to make any money
nope we beat the supermarkets and our products are better. we make a good living from the greenhouse-farm
you talk about ec right off the bat but dont say what an ec is??
ec is electrical conductivity. It's like parts per million, and is used measure the concentration of nutrients in the water.
Estoy enamorado de ella 😻
its a dutch system, so dont make tomatos in it :P
Aww they turn out pretty good 😊
Love you girls, keep up the good work and smile! ♥️
what are those filters you cleaned up for?
all the nutrient solution is filtered before it heads out to the NFT system or Bato buckets because we don't want to clog our emitters
Nice video! I do my Dutch buckets pretty much the same way except I use Masterblend, calcium nitrate and epson salt. I also recirculate my nutrients. Thanks.
Thanks! That sounds great and nice you recirculate. How long do you go between tank changes?
I replenish my reservoirs as needed and usually do a complete change at 6 weeks. My little greenhouse is not heated so I use a aquarium heater in each of my two reservoirs. You guys run a very neat greenhouse.
Hey Katy, where do you get your chelated iron? The stuff I’m getting is pricy. The pump in the 100 gallon tank looks like a utility pump instead of a sump? Where to you get your (timers and those bulb filters) and how many Dutch Buckets do they supply nutrients to with the pressure that comes from a 1/3 hp pump? I am in the process for revamping my system and I may try that instead of using the pool pumps that I currently have in that house.
Chuck
Hi Chuck. The iron I get is expensive too and haven't had any luck finding a cheaper alternative. Let me know if you find any thing. The timers are from Amazon, and there are 88 Dutch buckets in my system. The pump is going on 7 years old and does a good job. -Katy

Im starting a small indoor lettuce and wheatgrass farm. Im completely new to this.
May i ask:
-In hydroponics how do the roots get oxygenated? Would it be better to use fog misters or bubble stones will suffice?
-What nutrients do lettuces/wheatgrass need in the water? Do all plants require common nutrients but some need added special nutrients?

Hi Katy! Great video Devon!
Cucumber question, Do you prune your cucumber plants for fruit growth promotion?
Thanks for sharing. :)
Hi! Thank you so much! We prune them a bit, but sometimes they go a little crazy if Katy gets busy. I'm hoping to help out more this year now that my boys are getting bigger. We do clip off the first set of young cucumbers before they grow too much to get a bigger crop down the line.
Hello ladies , what is the potassium nitrate formula for Tomatoes after 3rd bunching? Thank you, keep up the great work!
hi , i just started watching this channel and enjoy your smiles and attitudes. yes i am curious about this too. I would like to know more about this as well. thank you in advance.
Hi Katy, Hi Devon, I preper my own stock solution and it doing very well. The EC for tomatoes 2.5 is peefect also cucumber doing fine. Also I"m using filttered water (100 ppm)
Hi that sounds great! It is very nice and easy to grow cucumbers and tomatoes together since they can have the same solution.
Devon is like Hollywood actress😮
Hey Devon! Don't known if it was said before but at what ppm/ec does your mom put the cucumbers at? and does she add anything to it as they grow? Also what variety are they? Thanks for all the great information! I love hydroponics and want to have my own greenhouse someday growing this way. Also being women in the industry is so inspiring!!🥰🥰
Thanks, Tara! She grows the cucumbers right along with the tomatoes so they are at 2.3 - 2.5 ec. If she doesn't have tomatoes going, she gives the cucumbers the lettuce formula, and they do fine on that too. I also would love to have my own greenhouse, just a small hobby one for the yard. I hope you can get yours soon! 💚
I have no questions yet, but I want to say that you & your mom are beautiful ❤. Keep up the amazing work, looking forward to learn more.
