Born and raised in Chicago don't go to portillos for beef. Al's, jonnies, Scatchell's, Tony's, and Novi's all better than portillos and that's just off the top of my head.
Been in the area for a few years and definitely agree with that statement. If you go to Portillos, just stick with the burgers, dogs, and fries can't go wrong there.
When I lived in Los Angeles I got Birria as often as I could, which seemed to be made on Fridays. No matter how big or small the eatery was, they Always made their Birria in the traditional way: they dug an earth-pit, filled it with burning charcoal, laid down a layer of three or so banana leaves, nestled the whole cleaned goat down into it, laid a few more banana leaves on top, then covered the whole thing in more burning charcoal, and finally buried it all in earth. Then it roasted for almost a day. And Every Birria I ever had that was made this way was juicy, sticky & delicious. Then on Saturday morning my family went to Dim Sum in the 626, and on Sunday, it was all about Menudo. As an Angelino, you live a Mexican, Chinese, & Korean culinary life.

Speaking of Popeye's they came out with a Golden Chicken sandwich and a blackened chicken sandwich. And there is a version some of the sandwiches that comes with cheese and bacon.

In-N-out fries deserve some respect. They are the only fast food fries that taste like potatoes. Yeah, they're single fried so not as crispy. You can always ask for them well done.
If you get a chance to go back to portillos, you gotta try the cheese sauce as a side and dip with fries and pour onto each bite of the dipped beef , also try both sweet and spicy peppers on ur beef . And chocolate cake shake with a straw to drink it out of , no spoon . Cheers Mike

Franks and pizza are the best. He of course thinks Illinois has the best. You’re sorta kind of a tie breaker, because you live in N.Y. but travel off and on to Illinois. I'm sorry but there is a small family owned café in the Harz in Germany, that has way bigger cream puffs.. They might not be filled with vietnamese coffee but it's definitely bigger.
