@@jbb8382 No. The Indians pitching was simply exhausted. Remember they lost Cookie Carrasco in the last week of the season, when he was hit in the pinkie by a shot up the middle. Then Trevor Bauer gets that stupid drone injury to his hand. The pitching of Corey Kluber and Andrew Miller powered them through the playoffs, but they just had nothing left for the seventh game of the World Series.

I feel like I was "at" this game, though I was not in the ballpark. I had just moved to Cleveland a few weeks earlier and was in Lincoln Park Pub in Tremont with some friends on Taco Tuesday, watching this on TV. I think we stepped outside on the Sexson home run to see if we could see the HR fireworks from the park. We couldn't (we were too late), but it was fun trying. It was an early bonding experience for me and my new roommates, and watching this brought back a lot of good memories.
...And in the playoffs, we WERE able to see fireworks on a Jim Thome homer in the playoffs against Boston from our place in Ohio City. Or maybe we just heard them? Either way, this Indians team will always be one of my favorites. The Indians/Guardians aren't my actual team, but I've always had a great deal of fondness for them because of my time in Cleveland, and because of this '99 team.

More like their scorebook. Even using the bigger team style book, you only have so many spaces for each batting spot. Baines had bad knees and was timed with a sundial by that point in his career. Justice was slowing down too. Hargrove wasn't beyond putting a pitcher in the outfield in a pinch and using an infielder like Carlos actually saved him from putting another pitcher in a OF spot. Nagy was more of an athlete so putting him out there wasn't so much of a defensive liability. Losing Junior really hurt them more than anything that game but his backup ATM wasn't too bad.

The more famous August magic occurred 2 years later against Seattle: Cleveland down 14-2 in the 7th! Omar tied it with the bags juiced triple in the 9th!

Seeing this today, with all of the changes made to speed up the game, really demonstrates how slow the game used to be. The short walks around the the pitching mount, the step backs to take a few cuts, all add up to a lot of time wasted. I ended up watching this on 1.25x. In person, the slower game never bothered me, but on TV, it was always terrible, especially now with my phone reduced attention span.

Anyway I faintly remember switching back and forth between the Brewers/Dodger game (I live in WI so I didn't get Fox Sports Net Ohio where I live) and Baseball tonight. I remember how ESPN would do the updates and them showing Richie hitting the go ahead home run. I had no idea that he'd soon be a Brewer. I was like, wow that was a crazy comeback. I believe the Tribe also had a huge comeback against the Mariners that was on ESPN.

I love baseball. It's late August and the season is grinding on. Only in this sport can the unlikely and absurd happen. Geez. I forgot about Harold Baines with Cleveland in '99. Got him from Baltimore where he was hitting .322 in 107 gmes with 81 RBI. He then put up Keith Hernandez numbers: 1 HR 22 RBI. In fairness just 28 games.
Anyways, I was surprised (like many?) Baines made the Hall of Fame. I always thought he was no better than Chil Davis, but, Baines hit 34 more HRs, than Davis' 350 and had close to 500 more hits (2866 to 2380) in three more MLB seasons. Baines AVG higher than I thought, too: .289. Davis career was .274. Davis managed to score over 1240 runs by drawing more walks than Baines. Davis managed the higher career OBP .360. to .356. Baines still had more runs scored at 1299.
    So,
Anyways, great 1999 comeback. I haven't watched all of it yet. Percival was a stud closer for a few years for California but struggled against Cleveland a couple times!
