  • Today we're exploring the era of National Rail from 1995 to 2002(ish)
The National Rail Corporation was founded in February 1992 after an agreement between the Federal Government and the State Governments of New South Wales and Victoria. It took control of all interstate services previously managed by Australian National, FreightCorp, and V/Line, starting operations in April 1993. National Rail launched various business units such as Intermodal, SeaTrain, SteelLink, and Trailerail. They mainly operated on the 1435 mm standard gauge. By 1998, they could compete for intrastate contracts and added services transporting various materials like blue metal, iron ore, limestone, and coal. In 2002, it merged with FreightCorp and was acquired by a consortium, subsequently rebranding as Pacific National. Initially, the corporation inherited a mix of old rolling stock but later modernized its fleet, ordering 120 NR class locomotives by September 1995, with the entire delivery completed by October 1997.

15:17 M2 freeway construction works at Epping. A lot of history to cut through in that embankment with that 1920s stanchion base and all. Not to mention all the homes they demolished leading up to it.

You knew the day was coming, was only a matter of time. Sure did make things interesting though with the steel trains outta port Kembla though, never knew what was going to be on point.

Great collection and presentation Allan, well done. What a waste of taxpayers money only to have National Rail sold off in February 2002 after just 10 years of service. The Chullora footage brought back some memories.😉
