Physical Therapy Restores Walking After Stroke

- Upon admission to Helen Hayes Hospital following a stroke, Joe had right sided weakness and poor balance. At the start of his physical therapy sessions, he required the assistance of two therapists to walk.
With intensive physical therapy focused on strengthening and motor learning, Joe progressed from requiring two people to walk to walking with assistance from one therapist and the use of a cane and orthotic. The orthotic helped Joe control his right knee and foot during walking.
This is so inspiring!!! I was right where he is in this video. It's devastating to say the least! If you're PT or OT God bless your heart for getting into a field that requires such love and patience! If you master the craft your reward will come back to you!!!
Nurses, PTs, and OTs do stand out of all the allied health professions on the compassion and patient engagement scale.
So motivating!! ❤️🇺🇸

Those who help us to get back to our daily life without any physical contraints are actually GOD to my eyes. Nobody wants to be bedridden regardless we are poor or rich. This is the kind of treatment we expect from all hospitals staffs.

To those people getting mad about the gait belt situation: use your common sense!.Not all patients require a damn belt..Ofcourse if your patient is a fall risk, then use you clinical judgement and use one!.And some areas (US), consider it as a restraint..In this video, the therapist clearly knows her patient well and understands the risks..
a severino yup, what you said. I work at a rehab hospital, which this facility seems to be like, and gait belts are considered a restraint, therefore we also don't use them.
a severino I never used a belt or any fall risk or a cane after 4 months of my stroke I'm walking now and even driving both auto and manual, everything is in our minds and I suffered a stroke 11 months ago.Every stroke has different recoveries and my recovery is going fast 👍

So she was really getting Joe to weight-bear through the right leg and increase clearance when he swings the right leg(mini-hurdles). When Joe was going up the steps she cued him to step up with the right leg first as an exercise activity to increase weight-bearing and stability on right leg. Very effective activity. Generally though you want to step up with the strong leg first when going up stairs and step down with the weak leg first when going down stairs, as it is much safer. This is excellent Physical Therapy, just wanted to mention that to folks for their safety. Only practice these activities with your PT or once you get further along in your rehab with a family member or friend. Best wishes to all you stroke warriors who are fighting the good fight.
Watching this video have me crying I wish I could walk again trust me it is very sad not to be able to walk or help yourself dog better than you please some good samarthan out there help help please please

does the hand placement actually facilitate trunk leaning on the left side?
The hand placement on left side allows the therapist to facilitate weight shift to the right side while promoting upright trunk posture for improved control and balance.

Daddy had a stroke 5 years ago. He slept in the hospital for 10 days. Then he was put in rehab. When he was only 55 years old, he was put in an old people's home and all the residents there were so much older than him. 55 years old is pretty young. Daddy is almost 60 years old now. Mommy has to work hard every day to take care of Daddy. Sometimes me and my 6 little brothers help her with taking care of him. When Daddy had a stroke, me and everybody in my big family and our friends prayed for him to get better. And now he can walk, but he has to use a cane and a wheelchair and he can talk, but his favorite word is change. And Mommy always calls him dude. Daddy needs lots of therapy like speech therapy and physical therapy. Sometimes, the boys take him out for walks when it's nice out. And sometimes, Daddy's friends from his work come to the house. Like when I told my little brothers to take Daddy for a walk outside, they were sleeping. All of them were sleeping.
My mom had a stto me too she can move now but still can't walk she can talk but not like before I take care of my mom every day n I do physical therapy with her n speech therapy with my mom she's getting better at both thing's y'all can practice with y'all dad's like put a straw in his drinks that's good exercise that works the muscles and tell him to move his tongue left n right up and down n tell him to smile as well that always helps n try to do all the ABC letters with him n he'll start talking but always remember don't give up you can make anything impossible happen
My sister had a stroke recently and she is only 36. She has right side paralysis. I do hope she can walk again. It's only been 2 weeks. Hope and pray she gets better
Sorry to hear that Jackie h I'll hope n pray that your sister gets better too because I believe she will walk again for a fast recovery

Which country situated in this hospital??
United States-State of new York
Question: if re educating lower extremities after stroke & using walker, which leg do I start with? Do I start with stronger leg or involved leg??? Or does it matter???
Treatment varies by individual and diagnosis. We would advise that each patient’s treatment team look into the benefits of particular treatment options on a case-by-case basis.
How long does it takes for a person to recover from a second stroke. And can you just exercise once a day? I’m asking because I have little time to help my grandma exercise because I work.
There is no exact time frame for recovery from a stroke, as every patient and every stroke will be different. We encourage every patient and family to be in close contact with their care team for more information regarding their individual situation.
Still under therapy. Was doing better but u forgot that i can't carry and abuse my body. Back pain back. Scary.

Those are some loose legs, for some one that suffered a stroke. This may be fake. the effected arm doesn't square up against the mid section.
Thanks for your comment. Every patient’s rehabilitation journey is unique and we strive to document patients at various points in their recovery. This video features a patient towards the end of his inpatient stay, and we are very happy to have played a role in the restoration of his functional mobility.
