- Patients who have had a stroke often experience reduced arm and hand function. Occupational Therapists use a range of hands-on
therapeutic techniques to restore these vital functional abilities.

You can see that woman is a very nice lady very caring loads of empathy
1st rule to be a therapist , you have to be sympathetic.
@@biotopiawaves9849 Not sympathetic but empathetic. Sympathy is the least thing expected from any Therapist, it compromises intervention.

Very nice video - I am an occupational therapist - worked with more than 800 stroke survivors over the past 6 years in London- all that I want to say - please do not stop using your hand after stroke, use every bit of movement that you have (it can be just flickers, means a muscle activity), rehabilitation should start day 1 after stroke, 'if you do not use it lose it' is the basic principle. There needs to be more education around role of hand in walking, and how foot placement influences outcome of hand exercises. Simply please do not give up. Wishing you all the best.
Wow, that sounds very interesting? Foot placement and hand? I have to look into that, thanx so much.😊
and what if you cant use it from day 1 its already lost?
Thanks for helping people we r proud of you..... I'm so happy when i help people in this situation and see them recover their health ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

It's when he breaths out at the end when you realise how hard he's been working through all of this. Simple movements we take for granted. That's some resilience.
I have the same problem and it's very very difficult n disappointing when you can't do something that you have done all your life n take for granted it's not easy at all. I work very, very hard just to lift my arm up to near vertical as possible n I still can't manage it easily it's flaming hard work 😪

I am currently a massage therapist exploring a career in OT. It's nice to know that my massage techniques can still be of use when I become an OT! Thanks for the videos :)

I had a stroke 6 months ago I'm still paralyzed on my right side after intense ot
I really am enjoying watching this... It's what I do and preach almost every day with my clients!
Are you an OT as well? Or PT?
Thanks for the video. I am working with my first stroke patient by now. I am a masseur and a nurse. I see to follow both the science and the instincts. I do body, limbs and facial massages, we train reading, talking, mimics, we excercise, and I have put some kinetapes on the foot, arm and hand. My client is improving so much, really. It has been 2 weeks, he can walk, slowly, but steadily, he articulates much better, the leg and glutes muscles are coming back, the palm starts to straighten. The client is 68, male. He is also my friend, so he trusts me and helps a lot. I come every day and he continues working after I leave.
Guys, there is so much we can do! Don't give up on relatives and friends, it seems bad and scary at the beginning, but it is doable, we can do it!
Btw, I work with him 30 to 60 minutes a day, also helping with showers and encouraging for occupational jobs like cooking, cutting apple, dressing on his own, and making sure he understands the progress in order to keep faith in recovery.
Important point, and my friend knows, too. Strokes can repeat! So educate your clients to stay sensitive to sudden changes and to ask for assistance immediately if they feel like "it", in order to get help ASAP, and to preserve maximum of the gained.
Lol to all.

My dad recent;y got a stroke. I hope that with PT and OT, he can regain his right side mobility.
Ahh, I love your fetus Yoongi pfp!! My mom just had a light stroke on her right side less than a week ago now, and she's feeling hopeless because she can't afford physical therapy, in order to restore the muscle function on her right side (as well as general motor function). Hence why I'm looking at these types of videos.
From one ARMY to another, I hope your dad is able to recover his mobility, I'm wishing you both the best!! 💜
@@shaleemichelle I am so sorry that happened to ya'll. I seriously pray that ya'll will get through this. I will tell you an exercise that I do is lifting my dad's arm up and he needs to look at it (15x) so maybe ya'll can try this. Nothing will recover immediately but give it a try! Another exercise I do with him is one hand holding his elbow and the other hand put pressure on his palm. Good luck and yay ARMY!

There are many materials at home that can be used as therapy materials. Why not start crumpling a t-shirt for finger strength development. As well, let him start standing to develop his knee and leg power.
She knows her stuff, great video!

great video gives all stroke victims a real hope
Hope to find an Occasional therapist like her to help my left arm to move..
Thank you, too bad my OT didn't help me this much. I'm sure I would have been farther along than I am now, 10 months post-stroke.
Same here. My OT only worked with me a few times. My lower arm/hand is WAY behind. Almost a year now since the stroke. I'm trying to walk on my own. Can do so very short distances. But the arm, still difficult to raise and lower and it's swollen all the time.
If what happens to the scapula happens as you described it at the start of the video, getting you fingers between it and the ribcage to massage the rhomboids is a much better way of solving the problem than just trying to range of motion it free.
This is a really good video.I love my stroke recovery exercises from the UK charity Arni. Some great tips here that I will do too.

Thanks doctor. I need to learn how to make right arm, hand, right leg and foot of my mother start moving. She had had a stroke in July last year. Physiotherapist is constantly working but it is not result oriented. She is nearly 68.
This man must be lucky, because this doesn't happen to everyone.
I wonder how’s the patient doing right now, any updates please
My wife had a rhs stroke 2 1/2 years ago. We've been doing all these exercises, and more, yet hardly any movement in her right arm and hand. It is so distressing and discouraging to see my sweetheart go through this. I don't know what to say.

great video! Thanks!!
I am confused. How's that OT and not physio/physical therapy?
Thingolness you cannot begin with functional activities before you mobilize the joints and stretch, make the movements easier when you are working on funtion
OTs also tend to deal with more fine motor skills than PT, though there are some therapies like behavioral occupational therapy that don't focus as much on that. But the fine motor practice of holding his arm up and moving it in a small circle would be considered occupational therapy fine motor practice

I'm surprised the patient wasn't positioned in sidelying? I feel like its easier to manipulate the rest of the arm and mobilize the scapula in sidelying.
You're right but there could have been a number of factors they didn't. Plus she had to release the pecs & lets say after releasing traps, teres, supra & infra, levator, when he goes to turn supine (to release pec major & minor) it would use a lot of posterior muscles she just released. He also could have extreme difficulty using left arm

Hi i have a few questions. Im in the OT program now and i dont see these types of techniques in our curriculum. I was wondering if this is something you learned outside of school. Also when doing this kind of therapy as an OT dont you always have to link it back to adls and such.
spektrumFTW education continues well beyond the masters OT curriculum. Its all rudimentary while youre in school
she uses occupation as means when she instructs him to reach for bottles of medicine there. managing medicine and reaching medicine is IADL.
I recommend bobath or NDT certification
