Give Adina Porter all the awards.
She is amazing.
No matter what you think about this episode, you have to agree, she is acting her butt off
My thoughts exactly!
I loved the art of this episode, the poetry, emotions, the higher self speaking to her younger self, what it’s like to relive memories. Everything about this was deep, what I got from this episode was Lillian returning to relive her dark night of the soul as to remember why she continued to push through despite wanting to commit the big S. We saw what she went through that night, maybe she saw a scared Brian in the dying man, I’m excited for the finale and the reviews to come.
Give Adina Porter all the awards.
She is amazing.
No matter what you think about this episode, you have to agree, she is acting her butt off
The actress who plays Lilian did an amazing job
Both actresses were incredible
I believe Brian tried to kill Apollo because he may have assumed Charles was the real father. And he just spazzed out.
Possibly
Yes she killed brian because Brian was trying to kill Apollo
I think this was incredible. Anyone who’s willing to really listen and pay attention, instead of just seeking shallow amusement (nothing wrong with that,) will find this very informative, interesting and the performance was unreal! Already so many responses to this post make me feel a lot of people checked out during the episode. - unfortunate because of how truly awesome this is.
Yeah my main issue was the placement of the episode but overall very impressed by the acting and the production
I felt like I didn’t breathe for an hour! Literally bewitched……… I think some people are expecting a space battle ffs 😹
I so agree! I do get that it didn't advance apollo's story as much, but the actual story being told here was so engaging, clear to follow, and an awe-inspiring piece of work by everybody involved.
I completely agree with you.
Enlighten me because I’m lost af
I think the comparison between the sick man in bed and younger Lillian making a plea with her older self are that in both scenes the older Lillian appeared before them both as a godlike figure or fairy maybe. She granted both their wishes from their point of view, and older Lillian was in per present timeline while she relived those moments, thus displaying her power. Also maybe the witch that Emma had visited by the lake, and been told by the local bartender not to let her touch you, was a future version of Emma 🤷🏽
Appreciate you sharing your insight
I too thought that the witch by the water was possibly a future Emma
Look at the hotel signs. It spelled Gire and it means fall, hidden and few other things. This episode has so much answers. Don't take it for granted...
Great observation! I also noticed that the crossing of the signs of the “Hotel” sign and the “Girls” sign, the e wasn’t lit and the letters that were lit spelled “Hot Girl” I’m not sure what that signifies, it’s just something I noticed 🤗
Great eyes 👀
Charles B the papi of that baby 😂😂
The thing that bugs me the most is that next week’s finale is only 29min long… like you said I feel like it will be rushed. Thank you for the breakdown it definitely helped. But honestly this episode shouldn’t have been the one before last! I’m going to have to read the book at this point
@Movie Files I enjoyed this episode. The use of allegory allowed us to see the depth of Lillian's POV of her interior world. This is not typical TV. This episode use of a dreamlike narrative to explore a black woman's psychological complexity was an interesting way to convey her storyline and I'm here for that. I appreciated the showrunners not spoon feeding or not giving me intellectual credit to to be able figure out it out.
It challenged us viewers to pay attention and think.
We've seen this type of storytelling on other critically acclaimed tv shows like, Atlanta and Lovecraft Country, and didn't resist its method of storytelling. The Changeling is a fairy tale so elements of the fantastic should be expected.
Well said and yes I had a feeling that some would literally hate the episode because of how it told this very specific story.
I agree!
This episode completely lost me or either it makes my brain hurt. I think it was put together eloquently but I constantly found myself lost trying to tie every little thing to the other episodes. But this is what I could gather: Brian was hella abusive, Is Brian really Apollo’s father? (I dont think so - Apollo is 100% black not bi-racial, now Emma on the other side is for sure bi-racial). So did Lillian get pregnant by her boss maybe before she and Brian got together, and thats the mistake? Does Brian THINK that Apollo is his or realizes that hes not and tries to drown him? Was Apollo really killed by Brian and Lillian made a deal w/ another world to exchange Apollo for a Changeling and indeed Apollo is a changeling?? Really Lost - but I love your review
Honestly, from the beginning, when I observed the casting of LaKeith Stanfield playing Apollo, I knew his character was not a biracial character, leading me to believe Brian was not his Dad. I understand people who are biracial have different features for each person, depending on genetics, even down to skin color and hair texture. However, I still felt that way. If Charles is Apollo's Dad, that fact confirms how I have been feeling. Also, I agree with you Elliott that the characters were talking in riddles and honestly, I only understood the episode to a certain extent. I am happy and relieved that you decoded this episode. The scene with Brian and Lily Ann at their picnic was the most chilling scene. Brian would smile while making dark comments and coming off like he was joking. I think someone is more scarier when they tell you how they are feeling and their motives in a playful tone than if they were serious.
Emma is biracial and she definately doesn't look like Apollo
@@leahm1883Yes, Emma is biracial and does look completely different regarding her features.
Now it completely makes sense i was lookin like Brian aint that boi pappy
It appears that Elk Hotel is a central place for the Woods that Emma is looking for. Elk Hotel seems to be an Altar where the fairies feast on the dreams and longings ( tasty secrets ) of the living. Also, we see the principle of of the three - Emma’s 3 wishes and Lillian’s 3 traumatic day experiences of men dying in her arms. The trauma victims seem very attractive in terms of identity - they loose who they really are, like Brian. Dreams and longing together with desperate covenants seem to be a central theme for the fairies since the ocean scene in the first episode.
I feel like Brian figured out that she was cheating and tried to kill Apollo. Idk if it necessarily has anything to do with him being a changeling. It’s all in whatever the details are if this deal she speaks of. It said Apollo ended up having to pay the price which I’m assuming is his son Brian being taken by the trolls/fairies.
I think you should rewatch the episode
That scene was terrifying
Brian wasn’t Applos father her boss is his father
I absolutely loved this episode. Hands down one of best episodes so far. But you had a few things wrong. The guy that died in Lily arms was her brother, not cousin, go back to the flashback scene when he got shot in the car. He stated “I don’t want to leave my sisters”. Also, the girl that “William” was roughing up in the bathroom was named Angelica, not Angela. Great content 🤍
In 1967 Lillian and three cousins were traveling to the capital, Kampala, when they were pulled over by three men claiming to be agents of the GSU. The four cousins sat quietly as the agents inspected their identification, then demanded the only male cousin-Arthur
I absolutely have no idea where you got that from. But you need to rewatch the episode. He literally said his sisters
His sisters were the two girls in the back seat.
In the book the character was her cousin. The series has the character as a brother.
@@nayb9773- The term "sisters" & brothers is a way Africans refer to each other. It isn't necessarily literal.
This was a BEAUTIFUL episode! It was done so well. The performance, the emotion, the message, the imagery. It was my favorite episode out of the entire s1. At first it does make you kinda step back like hmm the switch up almost doesn’t fit but it’s necessary at realizing self-truth. I loved how the went about it; sometimes confronting your demons is the only way to progress forward & find answers.
I enjoyed it. A little more on the campy side than I like, but it comes with the territory in regards to horror/thriller/psych thriller shows/movies. The acting was nothing less than phenominal; obvious sign of a well-seasoned, gifted and trained actress!
I think Lilian made a deal with the monster to get rid off Brian and the monster took baby Brian as payment.
Definitely a possibility
I agree mostly… hated the backtracking but thought is was a good show. I don’t think they will be able to wrap it up with this last finale episode smh 🤦🏾♀️
Thank you for the breakdown you gave me more clarity and made me rewatch each episode to get a clearer understanding and I feel the same way about the episode arrangements
They could’ve condensed all that info into the first 15min and got on with the storyline the way it was going smdh. This is really making me think the season finale is going to be a late down.
👀
I didn’t care for this episode either and thought it was very out of place as well. I’m glad you had the patience to rewatch this a couple few times and give a very decent decoding of what in heck was all going on. I’m now going to watch your other videos on the other episodes and subscribe. Thank you for making these videos!
Yeah there was alot to unpack. Appreciate you watching and subscribing to channel. Welcome to the community!
Do you think Apollo kept seeing Brian with a blue face in his dreams due to the cartoon they were both watching before Brian tried to drown him? If so, what's the significance to the cartoon they were watching?
Whats crazy is Lilly ann said she hated Apollo thats how i know her Boss is the Daddy she was Glamour Brian was right about everything it wasn't insecurities it was intuition... He knew she didn't Love him thats why he was always saying crazy shit he knew as much as she hated him she wouldn't go anywhere because she wanted something from him she kicked him out for finding a receipt and accusing her of exactly what she did and instead of take accountability she kicked him out can we even trust her to say Brian tried to kill Apollo at this point?? She said it best she rewrites history that doesn't fit her agenda
The aids Guy was already deadhe was a spirit when she lit the extra candle its considered something to help unsettled find the light after she sing wich is what he wanted so badly and was keeping him from passing on he disappeared wich means he crossed into the spirit realm this is why she lit that single candle and blew it out after to close the door to the other side kinda like in that movie talk to me or if yu ever played with a Ouija board
I believe Brian isn’t dead, he’s not a fairy either. I believe William is a troll literally and figuratively. I think Brian is something else. Idk what but Will and him are not the same. Lillian is not a witch. She’s made a deal. But I think Apollo is a changeling just like his son.
Totally agree with you on episode placement.... perhaps next week will bring it all together.
I'm seeing this series as tragedy after watching this episode. All these characters have been hurt and hurt others in return. No one is "a good guy" in this series. The question for me is, will our main characters break the cycle of pain, suffering, and violence or will they succumb and just push it forward. Also, does anyone see the symmetry of adult Brian trying to kill baby Apollo and Emma killing baby Brian? In both cases the babies are not the offspring of the offended parent. One being biological in origin, and the other being mystical. Just a thought. 🤔
I definitely had mixed feelings while watching. I went from "oh wow!" To "what the heck?" several times! For the most part I liked it but my biggest issue was...why the heck was Billy in a tub of milky water while watching "Lena" perform! 🤔🤦🏾♀️🙄 I'm so confused!
Yeah there’s a lot to unpack
I agree if you watch more than once I feel like you see certain different scenes better and anything you might of have missed
100%
Im just hoping we get a s2 if any questions go unanswered. Considering this is the 2nd to last ep...Such a good show...imo
There has to be a S2
It's interesting that the book Charles gave to Lillian for Apollo is titled, "The War of the Worlds". ....🤔
I just don't like how some ppl are acting like they're smarter than ppl who say they didn't like this episode because I understood exactly what it was trying to do & some parts were interesting but overall it fell flat for me 💯and these last 2 episodes felt like filler , but this a good review like always✊🏾
Excellent analysis of this episode! You noticed so much detail. I found it very slow and dragging. I do think her boss is the father of Apollo. I sure hope the last episode ties things up, but fear that it will take another season to find out anything else.
I agree 100%
This episode was beautiful.
Thank you for that review & breakdown. You have helped me understand things I but more. All in all I feel the same. This episode was just so damn frustrating to watch because of where we are in the series. I guess if this were a 10 episode series maybe I could handle it but this really should’ve come earlier in the season or maybe condense things during this episode while giving us enough with the other plots to move the story along. This was well done and very creative but I needed more answers at this stage of the story and I was given a lot of questions. Kind of frustrated as I get up at midnight to start my day, watch a show and get going to work. I watched this because I was so excited for a great 7th episode and I passed on Loki, Gen V & the wheel of time. Bad choice, lol. Oh well at least I get done by noon and have all afternoon to catch up
Yeah the placement of this episode was definitely wrong in my opinion. Always appreciate the support 👏🏾
I agree with you. I'm extremely aggravated after this week's episode. Thank you for the recap ...
My pleasure!
❤️❤️
Great review as always. The last two eps haven't worked for me. Oh well, I've come this far might as well finish.😢
😂 wait till you see the runtime for next week
I met the director for this episode this weekend. This it that episode! This is art.
That’s dope. Did you see then after the episode and if so, did you asked them a million questions about what happened in the episode lol
@@MovieFiles and did!!! I tried hard not to embarrass my guy though.
@@tamaracharese lol I would’ve done the same thing - Hey so the scene where 😂
@@MovieFiles I did find out that the scene where she’s looking up was real plexiglass and they were physically there
This episode was sooooo confusing
Yeah definitely a lot to unpack
Hated this ep!! Hope the last episode wraps things up because it’s losing me 😭
@@Lauren-rb1jrI just found out the official runtime and it will make a lot of people feel a way 👀
@@MovieFiles for the last ep? What is it? 😭
Yea I feel the same way I feel like I have more questions than answers now I may have to rewatch it because it was difficult for me I just felt really confused
I think Brian knew that Lillian was pregnant when they married! They made a deal to get married to cover up the fact that Brain was gay! He always wanted a child so it was a perfect deal .When Lillian left him he felt like she broke the deal . Why did they make a big deal about the garbage strike ?
Does anyone else think the transgender person found in a sparkly dress might actually be Brian West. In the scene where Lillian was talking to the “devil” the narrator says the answer was in front of her the whole time and she went directly to the suitcase with the sparkly dress…
I love that they’re pudding us off, set us up for season 2. Leave us starving.
Apple has done a good job of giving their shows multiple seasons, so we’ll see 🤞🏾
I think we all just had the Glamour wiped away from our eyes with this episode
As I struggle to make coherent sense of all of the various pieces we has have been give over the past 7 episodes, I think I’ve reached the conclusion that “The Changling” is ultimately a story about generational trauma, where the trauma/ curses of the parents are inflicted on to their children. Emma is cursed with her mother’s mental illness, which affects her ability to mother Brian. Apollo inherits the trauma that he is mother brought from Uganda, and from American racism. His father Brian passes onto Apollo the effects of the abuse/neglect that he experienced from his parents in the form and fatherlessness, which thwarts his one wish to be a good father and husband.
I suspect that in the end this tale is not going to make literal sense, but fit together more as an allegory.
I was really lost in this episode ….. thank you for the review and breakdown
Appreciate you watching
You're bugging. This episode was dope.
I’m getting the book on Audible. I’ve got to see what happened in it.
This episode seemed sloppy and doing way too much. Lillian’s story is definitely important, but it seemed like way too much time spent on theatrics. It could’ve been much more direct being that there’s only one episode left this season. I get they want to be mysterious, but there’s way too many open questions to basically spin around for 45 minutes and then try to wrap it up at the end
Yeah I figured it won’t work for everyone
Adina Porter and Alexis Louder performance is impeccable.
What does this have to do with Norwegian trees? It's fascinating but I am more confusion than ever.
Am I the only one that feels like Lillian is not a reliable narrator?
reminded me of last night in soho
Similar vibes for sure
The purpose of having Brian play the role of the dying aids man. Is Lillian disposed his body in the elk hotel dressed with the golden dress. As mentioned in the beginning of the episode there was a trans woman found in a golden dress dead. That was Brian corpse. We can see the dying aids man in a golden liquid when Lillian was singing to him.
I completely agree with you. I even came on RUclips hoping I wasn’t the only one feeling displaced by this episode. I appreciate the performances, and the production, but it just did not fit the style of storytelling they had already established in the first 6 episodes. And the irrelevant monologuing just dragged along for such long stretches. I found my self fast-forwarding through the blabber a few times. This episode was filler and self-indulgent. Plain and simple. We got no answers and used up an hour just to create two new questions; is Charles the daddy, and did she kill Brian. A waste of the audience’s time this week. My bet is this episode only exists to stretch the series to a solid 8 episodes. We’ll be back to our regular scheduled programming in the finale.
The finale is 29 minutes long😒 My expectations for this show’s ending has dropped significantly. There’s no way they’ll be able to properly pace this story for everything we still need to resolve within 30 minutes. This further punctuates how much of a waste of time episode 7 was. It could have been a 10-20 minute scene of Lillian explaining this to our main character Apollo through flashbacks then moving along.
I totally agree with you. Considering that there were only 2 episodes left, I feel they should've spent more time on the main story.
@@anitabonghit5069 sorry, I meant episode 7. Episode 6 was also a bit of filler with Emma looking for the origin of a leaf whose tree is very common in the US lol but at least it developed some more world building and stuck with our main supporting character.
I read the book, and this episode made me extremely confused and I have no idea how they’re going to end this in one more episode
I know some things about the finale and I know it’s going to be a very interesting discussion 👀
I too read the book and felt exactly the same as NONE of this happens in the book. I think they’re trying to flesh out some of the stories for some of the peripheral characters…ie not Apollo or Emma…and take some liberties with the story itself so they have enough material to turn this into a multiple season show rather than a mini series.
I read the book and turned this episode tf off lmao
Be careful what you wish for. I am wondering what if Lilian made a deal to remove Brian from her sons life and when Apollo named his baby Brian it took that one too?
I really wanted to like this series but it is all over the place. The pacing and continuity is off, imo. I dont believe the last episode will be able to wrap up the story well. There have been good episodes but as a whole, it has missed the mark.
I agree. I’m also not afraid to admit it was Lakeith that drew me in the first place. I appreciate the ambition especially as a black sci fi/supernatural thriller.. this genre is really expanding, but it’s far too convoluted and vague. The creative direction lost me after episode 3. It’s a shame because I had high hopes for this after watching Lovecraft Country and Atlanta
I also didn't like this episode but I think Charles is actually Apollo's father.
Yeah I wonder if he’s still alive
@@MovieFiles I think he'd still be alive but I doubt they're going to drag him into the story in any major way...except maybe in season 2 if we're getting that.
These people were cast in these roles, but Lillian doesn't know William, the guys from the park or Emma and Kim's father.
I think that’s were the writers took some creative steps to add existing characters to fill those roles
Believe Brian's experiences were a bit different.
i 100% think that’s his father.
Yep Charles was the real dad 😮. Wouldn't Charles of left the box of stuff? Or is this something we will never know.
My guess is as good as yours lol
How would Charles leave a book brian Loved and how would Charles get Brians box it showed he was the one with the box not charles
@@kingzeetv6535 you're right. I have no clue but will anyone after the last episode?
Exactly. If Charles didn't leave the box than who did? Because Lilian supposedly killed Brian when Apollo was a young boy. Unless Brian survived that hit to the head the same way Apollo survived that hit with the hammer.
I wonder if Lillian was abused by Charles in the elk hotel. Similar to how "william" abused Angela. Since Lester mentions you will be stuffed in a suitcase at the bottom of the sea. Lillian is clearly suffering during that scene, maybe recalling past trauma 🤔
Or maybe Lillian was a lady of the night at some point which resulted in Apollo. Maybe that's why Charles gave her the Job so she could change her life and take care of the their kid.
Well, Apollo is not mixed race. So I believe this theory 😂
I was completely loving this season until this episode. I can't believe they wasted an entire episode on this! So what, Lilly had an affair with her boss that resulted in Apollo's birth and she passed him off as Brian's kid. The makers of the show could've told her story and kept Apollo or Emma's journey in play. Most of this episode had strange filler that we didn't need to see. I hope they somewhat wrap up the last episode well.
Yea I agree this show is amazing but I feel like this episode was a filler episode and very confusing and not totally relevant to the show
I noticed a few other things. When Lily originally signed her name in the hotel ledger, it wasn’t her real name. It didn’t say Lily Ann West. (Correct me if I’m wrong). It kinda looked like Cily Ann Lester. I believe the third male Lily killed is the TG with the donut in the gold dress that apparently didn’t have a name when found. Maybe Lily killed her and stole her identity before meeting Brian???? . Also, Anyone notice the flashback of lily and Brian having a picnic was on the exact island that Cal and the other women are currently on?? Brian even mentioned how they used to sneak the crazy patients to the Island using a secret route (same route Emma and Kim used when she flipped Emma off the boat? Or maybe the underground people that Emma met in the last episode?) Don’t think it’s an coincidence. Not to mention, Kim being shown in this episode having shown the same actions emma and their apparent mother had?? Mmmm Kim is like 13 years older than Emma. Maybe Kim is really Emma’s mom, not sister
She had her identity when she met Brian in the 60’s and kept the same name, so I don’t believe she took her identity. She most likely used a different name because this was the location she met Charles at and probably didn’t want her real name to be used. She’s a glamour / only wants people to see her in one way.
You really believe a Ugandan was named Lily Ann West in the 60’s? I’m having doubts about that. And considering the whole episode is about Lily coming clean to Apollo, if she didn’t steal an identity, why did she keep speaking in third person this whole episode?? As if Lily was her American Dream girl that she made her alter ego.
If she didn’t steal the TG identity she definitely ain’t really Lily Ann West
@@nayb9773 Her last name is Kagwa, and obviously Brian's last name was west. Also I did see the similarities between the islands but I believe they picnicked on Roosevelt Island, and the witch island is North Brother Island.
Uh, helllo. She took on Brian’s last name at marriage
It was deep
Yeah very impressive production and acting
What if Brian is William 🤔he seems to have a vendetta of some sort . Didn’t William do time in the military also?
Maybe
I will admit, this episode in my opinion didn't really speak to me, I just see a woman singing but I don't think I can see what it's trying to tell me, maybe I have ignored some important parts but im sticking to it.
It's been a very wild and fun ride.
The finale is 29mins ! I just don’t know
I can confirm
Y’all want everything to be love craft country or Atlanta and it’s killing these kinds of stories
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. My only gripes are pretty minor: Adina Porter's accent and the singing of Stormy Weather. I love Lena Horne and I knew they were paying homage to her but that version was nowhere near her version of the song 😂 The singing wasn't that great either imho. Other than that, this episode was very moving and the acting was superb! I absolutely love the actress who plays young Lillian. I just finished it and am already looking forward to a rewatch. I DO wish this episode was shown earlier in the series. While watching it, I felt slightly anxious because there are so many unanswered questions with just one episode left. Had the same vibe as Servant's series finale.
This episode wasn't my favorite. It was very artistic, giving the movie For Colored Girls vibes. It gave a lot of information about Lillian's life after coming to America.
I bet the 3rd man is Apollo
Interesting 🤔
She already had 3 men. Arthur her cousin, the hiv guy and Brian
I thought that was her brother who got shot
It was her brother. The other girls in back were their cousins.
my thing is apollo doesnt look mixed like his paretns are black and white lmao
I hate it that this is the second to the last episode and they have completely wasted our time with crap we didn't need to see. They could have shown that she killed the man in 5 minutes and got back to the story about emma and the main character guy.. I didn't even like the episode that focus on Emma because it's so vague and doesn't give up any new information to this mystery how are they going to solve everything by 1 episode next Friday? Will they really stick it to/slapping the audience in the face and leave on a cliffhanger and then probably not even get renewed for a new season?. If we have to wait a whole year to understand more of what's going on I'm going to be so disappointed this should be a one-and-done series... . Is kindergarten a troll or not and did he interact with his mom in the past? I couldn't tell if that was him or not.. needless to say this last episode really annoyed and aggravated me.. slow paced with barely telling us anyting involved with the mystery. Other than the one reveal of her being a terrible cheater and murderer and horrible criminal that should be in prison.. . All the women in the show are batshit insane witches. Happy Halloween 👻🎃
It was giving cellophane from Chicago. Just kinda meh
Hated the episode boring could have been done in five minutes
I was steadily checking the time stamp as I was getting more and more confused at the writers and what they were trying to do here. Lillian’s story could’ve been told in the first 15 minutes of the episode had it not been for all the monologuing. I always prefer shows that “show” not “tell” and they’ve been so good at that up to this point so I was a bit disappointed. This episode could’ve been Lilian and Bryan’s story 15 minutes - Apollo and Emma - 5 minutes leading up to Lillian at the waters edge again panning down to the ocean creature.
Sorry you didn’t like it
I didn’t like it. I was so confused and ended up fast forwarding some parts
I don’t get why Lillian would still lie about the affair if she’s confessing what really happened. While recounting when Brian found the hotel receipt she says she doesn’t know where it got it and that he could of planted it himself. Then we see both her and the bosses name on the books at the same night implying the affair. I’ve always been skeptical of Brian being Apollo’s father because Apollo doesn’t look a bit biracial. I know genes and DNA play a big part I just always thought that was kinda strange. I did lose interest a couple of times watching this episode I had to keep rewinding and it does get on my nerves that lots of things are said in riddles but hopefully they can wrap this up next episode.
Unhinged… not in a good way. Tedious story telling. Sometimes a series doesn’t need to tell a story with sooooo much back and forth, & bits / pieces. The non-linear, dream series, past AND present approach, the “clues” aka confusion just drained the fun out of this series. Why was it so complex? there were way too many questions and this episode felt longer than one hour and I almost gave up several times because it dragged out for way too long.
series lost momentum in this one for sure. come ooooooooooooon.
Worst episode. Could’ve been a 5 minute scene
