Hi Everyone - This is a long, comprehensive video! Sorry for the delay in posts - getting caught up and digging myself out! Almost there.
I worked for awhile on this video and wanted to get it out. Today I am covering the Autel X-Star premium. Previously I did an unboxing and I really wanted to get familiar with it, give it a thorough running through and not just do this in a couple of hours. I spent some time really going deep with it and finding little nuances and things that I like and what I thought could be improved.
Overall impression -
This is a solid quadcopter, it borrows HEAVILY from the DJI Phantom 3 but also has some of it’s own concepts built in (improvement to the controller). This is a solid choice for someone not wanting to spend $1300-$1400 on a Typhoon H or the Phantom 4 and compares almost directly against the Phantom 3 Pro.

I also put up a comparison between the Phantom 4 and the Autel X-Star premium. Not a lot of difference in video quality.
The automated flight modes are laid out well and very easy to use. I would like to see improvements in the waypoint mode that gave you an option to have a course lock type concept through the entire waypoint route so you can freely pan and rotate without it taking over at each waypoint. This would give you the opportunity to get more uninterrupted cinematic type shots in way point mode.
On video quality, I would like to see a D-Log type option available (*correction, D-Log is available if you scroll down, I didn't notice this). For my feel, the video by default has a bit too much sharpening applied, but you can adjust that and contrast and saturation to your liking.

The package comes in a nice case, a single 4900mah battery good for a little under 20 minutes of flight time and a 64GB brand name microSD card.
This is a great package overall and I would say stacks up pretty equal against the DJI Phantom 3 Pro

It is more expensive than phantom 3 advanced now 749 vs 699. So I guess still better to go with DJI?
Yes probably better - rumor has it Autel will be shutting it's doors soon.

The Autel compares more to a Phantom 3 advanced which means they cost about the same and you save nothing. It all comes down to who gives the best service.
Ive been doing my homework and researching several drones. I just purchased the X-Star Premium. I rather hope everything will run as smoothly for me as it does for you in your video. I saw a phantom 3 Standard in action in New Hampshire 2 weeks ago. I was immediately impressed. I bought myself an Syma x5sw to practice with. I also ordered the Syma X8W to practice with as well. Which is similar size to the X-Star. Can you record voice audio while videoing from the air? And have you had any App malfunction? And what happens when Quad goes to far? Out of range? Does it return back to home if so?

not much a difference? its $100 cheaper than phantom 3 pro, comes with a nice built case, a 64gb card and you can remove the gimble possibly for future products from autel. also, 2.7k at 60fps, 1080 120fps and 720p 240fps. that sir is more than a little difference. dji case is another $100. a 64gb that u would also have to buy, i mean come on. no brainer
NIce video, as a new X-Star owner, I appreciate the info. I also have a Phantom 3 Pro and would give the X-Star the slight edge in construction quality (also more robust). The mobile device mount is much better then DJIs, so I appreciate that much more. Still very few accessories (no ND filters, for example) for Autel X-Star - they could really do with a Sunshade as well. Thanks for the videos, keep up the good work, I'm happily subscribed to your future.

I think all you gotta do is draw the destination on the screen under the hybrid map mode then it will not stop at each way point. I use a stylus and I have smooth results

Hi Bill - really enjoyed the video. Very thorough. I think I'm going to get an Autel to replace my DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ but one thing that bugs me is I can't find any raw footage out there to download. Would you be able to share a clip of the 4K video without posting it on RUclips? I'm thinking just a 30 second clip. I'd be interested in seeing the footage raw and not processed by the compression that RUclips uses. Thanks again for the great video.
Please advice how to set up or increase the distance over 500 meters of DJI Phantom 4. The limit set up is max only 500 meter and when I fly away about 500 meters, it announces to over the distance. What should I do? Thanks a lot for yours advice and I'm very appreciated that.

Nice vide review of the X-Star Premium. Thank-you! I'm on the fence between the X-Star and a Phantom 4 Pro. What I like about the X-Star is what Autel is advertising, the capability of upgrading the camera to a 20MP camera that will be available sometime this year (2017). And for printing larger format photos a 12MP camera just doesn't cut it. Also of course the price of the X-Star is appealing. So the X-Star does not have Active Tracking like the Phantom's have? In other words, the X-Star will only follow the remote?
Is there a reason you filmed 1080p@60 instead of 1080p@120? Just curious, Im honestly not very familiar with filming/photography terminology and settings etc. so thats why i asked... Very nice review by the way, thanks for taking the time....

Not sure what you mean? You get warnings, you can manually change it if that is what you are asking.
33 is the min for orbit on the Autel is that the same on the dgi ? I want to do a tight circle around the car

Hows the speed pitch punch and acceleration. How much fly time with camera and without the camera? How would compare this quad to the Yneec 500 4K?
Do you feel as if the video is jumpy/jittery when you pan/tilt the gimbal? I've seen a few instances like this. Also, compared to DJI, how do you feel about it, image quality wise?

I have a samsung galaxy s7. If I buy this x star and record video in max quality settings, can I just put the memory card into my phone and playback the video in max quality without it looking all glitchy n pixelated etc? will stills be shown in great quality?
I don't have a computer or laptop etc, my phone is my jack of all trades. If its literally as easy as swapping the memory card into my phone and seeing the awesome video quality, then im buying this in orange.
My bro in Law has the P4 and when he sent me the video in whatsapp the video was so compressed it was pointless watching, as long as it doesn't do this directly from the memory card Im happy!

Great demo Bill. I was going to buy the X-Star Premium but settled for the Q500 4k. Wish I had got this one now lol
After this review and others, I purchased an xsp. I am finding pan slew in orbit mode to be very difficult to control. Sometimes it moves proportionally to the rudder stick, other times you give a bit of rudder and nothing, so a bit more and still nothing, then more, more again till like 3/4 stick and then it pans too quickly overshooting the poi. Also, the video quality is great but the quality of stills is rather disappointing..not crisp at any iso, shutter, wb setting. I would like to see you test still shots and use the equipment more in-depth before doing a review. That said, I still like my xsp, it was inexpensive and would work without having to buy an Apple product. However, iit leaves me wanting better..namely more smooth camera control and the aircraft to maintain heading in waypoint mode as the review pointed out.
I viewed this shortly after it was published. Based on this evaluation and others, I decided to purchase the XSP Orange.

If you create waypoint using the map can you do this while the copter is turned off to conserve battery? Can you save the routes for future use? And can waypoints be set using maps on the P4 also?

very informative video. You basically covered just about everything that came to your head. I really appreciated the calibration tutorial. I typically run with my shoes on but that didn't hurt the information in this video :-)
Did I miss something? Title says phantom 4, but you keep referencing the phantom 3.
Great video! For follow mode, can it only follow the remote and app or can it follow phone/ipad with remote within range. Example: you want to follow you while on dirt bike/ skateboard and you can't hold the remote.
I quite like the Autel, but they don't seem to ship to Australia. It also seems to have a few little negatives with the performance compared to P4. Really nice footage though, and looks like a beautiful town. I really like some of the videos I have seen of the towns located in the valley on the side of the mountains. I'm not sure if that makes sense but it is something I find appealing and is probably the contrast from the developed town, to the neighbouring countryside.

What are your thoughts on this compared to this compared to a DJI Mavic Pro? I like the Mavic Pro but seems like the camera on it sucks compared to some of the others.

The comparison for me boils down to how much value can I get for the price and this helped me make my decision. well the first problem I see you're not supposed to hold onto the legs when you calibrate it. that can screw up the calibration.

Hi Jake - I actually don't recommend any, except for the upcoming Epson BT-300 - I always keep the craft in within line of sight and I use the Epson a lot. Plenty of people use them though.

When calibration of the compass you should at least be 8 feet from quad an controller for best results
If I where to run out of battery where it returns to home And I took of under a tall tree the went around it when ascending will it auto land and hit the tree or can I cancel it when it's in return to home from being low on battery then just manually land it

Hey Bill new subscriber here. If you were starting a business doing realty, weddings and music videos with a drone, and you had a limited budget which one would you go for out of the x-star and mavic pro? Or would you save up a little more for the P4P?
between the first two, now, the Mavic Pro, but I would save for the Pro - I don't really know how much success you will see in weddings and music videos though. Good luck!

Collision detection, proven longer battery, Log settings for video (most critical in my view), the Autel tends to tip over more on landing than the Phantom.

Great video thanks. That is really impressive for the price but the Phantom 4 looks to have such a better tuned camera even if specs are very similar if not the same. Maybe that can be updated with future firmware updates. I like the controller better than the Phantom 4 with the buttons and the screen but the camera and the target auto-follow tracking feature of the Phantom 4 seems much better than the radio based following feature of the X-Star Premium. Once again, perhaps that is something that will be available with a future firmware update. By the time you get a nice case or backpack the Phantom 4 is literally twice as much though. This seems like an extremely nice alternative for the money.
It is a good alternative, like I said, I have an issue with the copy of the design, but it is very capable and stacks up nicely. I think with adjustment on the camera default settings you would be hard pressed to see any difference.

Great detailed video, Bill! I am flying the XSP and like many of the features. One of the biggest issues for me is the color balance changes while I am shooting video regardless of which setting I choose. The camera settings should include locking in the color balance. I spoke with Autel regarding this issue and they agreed it was an issue, but gave no indication that this would change in the future. I agree with you, Bill that the sticks need a setting to adjust their speed because it is very difficult to pan the camera left or right smoothly. I had to purchase a NVIDIA K1 Shield before I was able to obtain a video feed with little or no lag or loss of the video signal. Autel lists a number of approved devices, but since I am a Mac person, the Mac products did not work very well for me. I even purchased a Mac Pro i pad and returned it the same day because of its poor performance. I wish to fly professionally, so having complete control of the camera settings and the ability to create dynamic video in post production is important to me. Hopefully a firmware update will address these issues, but not holding my breath for this to happen.

I had my first crash in to a tree trying the orbit mode feature. Pilot error all the way. I watched your video numberous times, but made the mistake of setting a point for the XSP to fly to and begin orbit mode. Unfortunately I did not have enough altitude and things happened so quickly, I did not have time to exit the mode or push the pause button. As you know, it takes a second or two for the pause button to engage and that was not enough time. The good news is no props were broken and I had to only replace one rubber grommet and two plastic retaining pins. I flew it within 15 minutes of crashing and so far it is flying well. I will now send your video to my i phone and when I try the orbit mode again, I will look at each step from the video and hopefully do it correctly. Again, thanks for the detailed video.
