hey bro! a tip for you... if you are doing this and accidently break the lcd temp sensor you can actually replace it with the lcd temp sensor from the mid 2011 21.5 inch imac as the connector is identical the cable is just a lot longer... i found this out when i broke my oem lcd temp sensor and the only one i could find was one for the 2011 model...
Thanks for this video . I almost bought the i7 870 for my 2010 imac 11,2 when i actually needed the i7 860s .I had just recently picked up the imac for $20 on offerup and had to buy a gpu for it.i have a video on it too , but its up and running with mojave using dosdue1 patcher .Next i need to upgrade the cpu to the i7 860s .Today ill be putting an 512gb ssd in it.Thanks again for the info it was really helpful.i just subbed too
funny... i just got a imac like this also! but i got mine for 70$ a guy in a couple citys over got 17 of them because the local newpaper shut down and he bought all they imacs at an auction... i wish i could of scored it for 20$ like you did but everything worked on mine even the gpu.. which probably explains why i paid 70$ for mine... i did max the ram out to 16gb and i did put a 256gb ssd in it...and i installed catalina on it... you can put sonoma on it also with open core patcher but even with a ssd and 16gb of ram its super slow... dont put sonoma on it... it also takes forever to install too even if you do a upgrade install which is what i did... just use catalina or mojave on it..
these units were pretty upgradeable, granted with quite a bit of work. the gpu can also be upgraded to like a quadro k1000m 1gb graphics. although unnless its for tinkering is it really worth it these days?
You had only 8GB of 16 available initially? I did the same upgrade and had the same problem. I put back in my old processor and the iMac showed all the memory. I looked at the contact pads on the i7 CPU (from Ebay seller Snowzhen in China) and several were damaged -- I had received a defective CPU. What was your problem on the logic board?
Seems to be a different commputer when the screen is taken away,it seems to have an ssd drive already installed, but next closeup of ibside shows old sata harddrive still in place??
So you ran the patched and upgraded without upgrading your gpu? Catalina runs horrible on that gpu that you have. It doesn’t support acceleration. There are custom roms for the vbios of the newer gpu’s out there. I would suggest upgrading the gpu.
Yes I've reverted back to High Sierra for now. I did state in the video the GPU upgrade is next on the list. I'm just in 2 minds whether to buy a pre flashed Metal supported one or do the flash myself.
Someone please talk about the fact that these computers are no longer supposed with security updates from Apple. I agree that they are fantastic in terms of speed and power but what about security anyone who has knowledge of this please add to this conversation I just wanna understand it.
Older MacOs versions no longer receive security updates and are obsolete. You can update these older systems to a newer supported MacOs using Dosdude's patcher and they become current again. Search Dosdude's patcher for more info.

I'm glad it helped you. The i7 made a huge difference.

I'm about to do this on my 2011 21.5. 1tb SSD is less than $40 now. The spinner drive in there now is over a decade old.
It's well worth the effort.

I cleaned the DIMM contacts in the end and they all showed up.

It's the same computer. Just different shots due to editing.
Thank you. great video. I would like to put I7 to my 21,5 2010 imac. Have you had any problem with the fan speed? Thank you
No but your Mac will only take the I7-S models of CPU.
The power supply cannot handle the normal I7.
Intel Core i7 860S 2.53GHz works great
OWC sells a cable that will enable the installation of an SSD without losing fan control. It's fairly pricey, about $40.
Hi, Thank you very much for your video. It's really helpful. I am really appreciated if you can let me know the model of CPU number of that CPU.
I7-860S SLBLG
so you didn’t upgrade the graphics while you were in there?
It's integrated graphics not dedicated. Intel Iris Pro.
Wich i7 is that imean gen and whats the max that the mb can handle
1st gen and that's the fastest.

@@VanOnTour flash yourself, it’s super easy.
The iMac in the video has a Radeon 4xxx series GPU, which should work fine with Catalina. It's the Radeon 5xxx and 6xxx series that isn't compatible.
Question about the Ram upgrade. You only upgraded the ram storage and not speed. Don't these logicboards support a slightly faster frequency (Mhz)?
I believe so but I just used what I had laying around if I recall.
What can we upgrade from 1333
@@blakemccreery864 you can put in 32 GB of RAM, four 8GB modules, but it will still only clock at 1333 MHz
@@RobAnthonyDire you’re correct. I did just that. OWC worked and still does without a hitch.
@@blakemccreery864 I’m actually currently in the process of reassembling after upgrading the GPU. The screws are pretty daunting lol
What i7 did you install?
i7 860S

Can you use the non S model like i7 860
Only on the 27 inch model. Not on the 21.5 inch one. The 27 inch model has a better power supply to handle the non S variant.

This iMac can take 32GB of RAM!
