  • This 2011 iMac is still very useable in 2022. I could happily do 90% of my daily on it. With the SSD and Ram upgrades It runs and edits 4k on FCP (although take a while to render/export). A testament to Apple build quality! Its a shame that the latest MacOs is not supported, however I am considering installing Monterey via the unofficial method!
Its actually an I7-2600 (Sandy Bridge)
    Original Spec 2x4GB Ram & 2TB HDD
    Spec now 4x 4GB & 500GB SSD!
Re-upload with sound! Thanks Charlie! :-)

Did this on my Mac and was pleasantly surprised at the increase in speed. I had to 3D print a drive bracket (although one can be bought at amazon). It took me about half hour. Upgraded to Sonoma using OpenCore and the computer is nearly as good as my Mac mini M1 (with a few software exceptions). The beauty of these iMacs is that they are upgradable to some extent unlike newer macs. I also upgraded the RAM to 20Gb for pennies per GB. Hopefully this will extend the life of this iMac for another 10 years.

That’s amazing. Did you really need the bracket after watching what he did in the video above?

Did you get 20GB RAM in an iMac 2011, or was yours different?

Great tip about not needing a bracket! I was just about to buy one on eBay but the electrical tape should do the trick hopefully. I’ve also bought a SATA Y-Splitter power cable, (for about £2.50) which also apparently sort out the fan issue without the need for thermal sensor.
    Thanks again. Great video.

Thanks for this video. Great presentation! Do you know if all the ssds have the same connections as this 2011 model? Trying to figure out which ssds will work with for mine. Id like to get 2tb that’s as fast as possible to give it a fighting chance. :)

So the server is actually still online the only thing is that you have to go thru a couple hopes to get to work

Yes. It is great. You might be discouraged by installers (etc) from going any bigger than a 500GB SSD drive since it's "such an old machine". On the other hand, if you have many, many CDs or videos, you might consider ignoring their advice!

Question : I got an "old" iMAC with that "?" mark folder flashing ................but the "command + R" combination did NOT take me to recovery. Actually, nothing happens. Not even a WIFI network prompt. Could it be that the drive is just DEAD ? If i throw a brand new SSD in there, will it boot up ?? Thanks
