    That was really good to watch. Between 2010 and 2012, I used to work with maintenance of hardware and computers in general, and I always liked it a lot, it was something I did because I found it fun and not for the money, and watching the video it seems that I was there with you disassembling and assembling! Unfortunately the card seems to have failure cause after 2-3 mins after mac starts freezing and then some color lines.I go to a local Mac service shop and they told me this card does not exist anymore.You know any kind of card that can feat with the same abilities? I 1st I don’t want to give a lot of money cause Mac it’s old and 2nd I have this Mac for music and Netflix.Thanks very much I wait for your answer...

    • @MacintoshMen
      @MacintoshMen  3 года назад

      I'd recommend you to get a Quadro K2000M or K1000M, those are relatively cheap cards and can be flashed to have a bootscreen. If you want native Mac support ("plug and play"), you'll have to track down a original Apple Radeon HD5670 or so out of an iMac. Stay away from the 6000 series, those are notorious to fail. I wouldn't get a Apple card though, since those don't have Metal support so you can't run Mojave or Catalina if you want to do that. There are many infos how to flash on MacRumors and my website, have a look at the links in the description.

    Moin, gibt es Limitierungen für ein GPU Upgrade? MXM Type A oder Type B sollte es ja schon sein, das weiß ich. Aber wisst ihr, ob AMD Grafikkarten auch nutzbar wären? Die AMD r9 m200x ist preiswert und würde theoretisch passen. Ob MacOS das dann aber akzeptiert und auch annimmt, ist natürlich eine andere Sache.

    • @MacintoshMen
      @MacintoshMen  4 года назад

      Hi, Mac OS akzeptiert AMD Karten ohne größere Probleme (im Gegensatz zu NVIDIA Karten). Bei den Hackintoshes zB sollte man deswegen auch immer AMD Karten verwenden, da die quasi "Plug and play" sind. Wenn man googlet, findet man immer wieder Leute die AMD Karten in diese iMacs verbauen. Den Bootscreen und boot switcher hast du aber leider trotzdem nicht.

    Great video. Just a quick question, I've asked other folks as well. This question is more directed to the baking process before replacing the GPU. I have a ATI Radeon 4850 512M and I've been getting the vertical lines. Trying my hand at baking the GPU before I move to replace it. Question is, do you know if it is recommended to use a dedicated oven to bake the GPU? Meaning an oven that you don't intend to use for cooking again, or does that not matter? I've been reading and getting conflicting information, so just wanted to get your experience. Also, would this GPU work for the 2009 i5 27-inch, Mac 11,1 model? Thanks!

    • @MacintoshMen
      @MacintoshMen  4 года назад +1

      I personally have never baked a GPU or motherboard before, but I would not do it in the oven in my kitchen. Who knows what toxic stuff might get released while the baking process, ths is after all a GPU; consisting of a PCB, chips and components who are SOLDERED together. I'd get a cheap used mini oven off the local classifieds.

      I tried this very method on another iMac 21" (500 GB HDD, 120 GB SSD instead of optical drive), unfortunately none of the drives are showing up in disk utility. I stil have to try if it's a hardware problem I caused (like a not properly plugged in socket or so) but the fact that both are not showing makes me concered that the iMac might not like it.

    So just to be clear, all brightness controls are lost? In other words you are stuck with whatever the factory brightness is? Also, have you tried to hookup and control a second monitor via a mini display port adapter? I’ve heard this is an issue and that’s a deal breaker for me.
    I’d love to juice my mid 2011 because it’s got what I believe is a failing GPU and I could use better rendering programs for work stuff with metal support but that brightness thing bums me out, so does losing the security of a target boot drive

    I have an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010)
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i5

    ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB

    1. You say that the Nvidia GTX 770M would be the better option but Is there any other GPU better than this or is that best option out there for my upgrade?
    2. What CPU can you recommend or is my i5 ok ? (using for video editing and music production but now seeing lag at times)
    3. If I was to upgrade CPU do I upgrade this before GPU ?
    4. Do I upgrade OS to catalina or mojave before installing the new GPU & CPU as you say there will be no bios on boot? or is one of the OS supported by apple so a normal OS upgrade is possible and what does this do for the future of the upgrade?

    • @MacintoshMen
      @MacintoshMen  4 года назад

      Hi, thanks for the kind words. Regarding your questions: As far as I know, there is also a GTX 780M available, which is even more powerful than the 770M. About CPU, you have to decide for youself, but a Quad Core Core i7 870 for example would be a nice upgrade from your Dual-Core i5. It made mine worlds faster (but I also came from i3).
      Yes, if you upgrade CPU you should do it BEFORE GPU to make sure the system works correctly. And about Mojave and Catalina, that's a bit of a headache to install on these iMacs. Officially only 10.13 is supported. So if you want to run later versions, you will have to install it before the GPU upgrade and also make sure to disable "legacy video card support" in the Mojave patcher when doing it. (In Catalina; I unfortunately don't know how to do it). In my honest opinion, I'd just stick with 10.13 right now if it does everything for you. It's just way less hassle. I hope I could answer your questions. Generally make sure you install an OS before you upgrade the graphics card because otherwise it will be hard to get one on there!

    Does this upgrade resolve the issue of a 2010 iMac not being upgradeable to Catalina?

      Yes and no xD You can run catalina and mojave because the GPU supports metal, however the process of actually installing the OS is rather difficult. You can try to install it BEFORE the upgrade but in that case you must make sure the patcher does not patch with "legacy video card support" or sth like this.

    Hi there! Great videos, thanks for that! A bit of hope for me! :D
    Can I upgrade the GPU without upgrade CPU? What you think?
