- This is a little 6"x 9" pastel painting I did for my dear brother, Garrett, of his darling little Yorkshire Terrier "Elle". I am using CarbOthello pastel pencils in combination with soft stick pastels. Some of my favorite stick brands are Rembrandt, Sennelier, Unison and Schmincke just to name a few. My paper of choice is Strathmore Illustration/Bristol board 500 series cold press Vellum 10 ply

+Jennifer .Barrios Hi Jennifer! Thank you, that's so nice of you and I appreciate it very much. :)) Roby
Great to see you work again Roby. This little "Tyke" as we call these beautiful terriers here in Yorkshire, is magnificent. How you deliberate over each hair is wonderment to me. You somehow manage to even capture the soul of the animals in your work. Thank you so much, and season greetings to you. Robin.
Hello nosineb! Thank you so very much! I love doing the details with the hair and all but it's the eye's that take it to the more personal level I think. You can see their personality and the story they are telling us with their expression, that's so important to me. So nice to hear from you again and thank you to Yorkshire from sunny California! :)) Roby

Hey Roby just here for some tuition. This will always be one of my favourites. It was the first one I ever saw of your work. I was hooked from then on and now I try my best to not copy but achieve as close to your quality as I can which is quite a massive distance. But aim for the top and get as close as possible is what I always say. Your definitely the top as far as I can see. 😊xx
Hi Lee! Aw, thank you so very much for your lovely compliments, blushing! So glad that my work has been so helpful to you and your art career, that's wonderful! Seeing your work Lee, you're doing fantastic! Even if you copy you'll be putting your own technique and style, it just happens that way lol. If you have any questions I'm only a keypad away! Thank you so much again! Your forever friend.... Roby :)) xoxo

Hi Sally~ Thanks so much! :)) Roby
I love your pastel paintings. You did a beautiful job on this darling Yorkie you captured her beautiful little face perfectly. I enjoy watching all of your demos. I love to do animal portraits as well and would love to paint full time now. I wonder if you would share a few tips on how to find a following so I can get more commissions?
Thank you for your time and sharing your talents.
Hello! Thanks so much for your support! Getting a following is difficult and you have to be determined and a little lucky too. I started entering in Juried shows and picked up ribbons here and there. I visited galleries in my state and then started doing the Arts and Crafts shows. I got a great following that way. It's really hard work but well worth the effort. That was 15 years ago and all of the time I kept practicing my passion daily! You can advertise in magazines, vet clinics and anywhere else that fits your style. Good luck and thanks again! :)) Roby
I'm so happy I found more of your videos. I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying them. Do you ever have art showings in gallerys? Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful talents.
Hi Jeanene, I'm so glad that you are enjoying my videos. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to comment and for your support. I do have exhibits in galleries some times. Thanks again! :)) Roby
you are absolutely amazing - I try to paint my dogs and the one giving me a challenge is my little Dorky called Dizzie that I rescued 10 months ago
+Heather Flack Hello Heather ~ Thank you so very much for your sweet comment! You know...I've been drawing and painting dogs since I was a little girl and it took lots of practice to achieve the level that I'm currently at. If drawing gives you joy then keep on, it's the passion that drives me to improve. Good luck and have fun with it. Thanks to for the rescue, wonderful!! :)) Roby
So Cute! Excellent job.
Kim Smith Hello Kim ~ Thank you very much, I appreciate your support! :)) Roby
I remember you mentioning that roby. I'll invest in one because I do find I snap the ends quite a bit with my knife. No painting for me today though I'm in bed with a virus so I'll just continue watching your lovely videos to cheer me up entertain and teach me :)
+Lee Ludlow I sure do like them. I know that other artists swear by the knife but like I said I am always on a time crunch so I'll stick to the electric and you can't argue with the great point produced. So sorry to hear that you're under the weather, that's a bummer!! Get well fast and again, I'm so glad that you are enjoying the videos, sweet! :)) Roby
Amazing!!!!
Hi Cecilia Kiss ~ Thank you! :)) Roby
This looks even more realistic than my Yorkie!

Beautiful work.... Loved watching this... May apply some of your technique to my digital works... I owned a Yorkie for 17 years and we recently lost him to old age.... You def capture the spirit of a Yorkie in the expression and eyes
Hi Jenny M. Stead ~ Thank you very much, I'm so appreciative for your lovely compliments. Wow, your little guy lived to be 17, that's wonderful! You're so very lucky to have him for so long. I'm sorry that you lost him though. Thank you so much for stopping by and giving me this lovely comment. :)) Roby
my pleasure :D
This is just brilliant! You capture everything and the eyes are especially good. More please, I think I've seen them all now. Great!

Fantastic!!! :)
+Aina Rønningen Hello Aina ~ Thank you!! :)) Roby
Hello. Your pictures are stunning. I've viewed most of them and I find myself being more impressed with each I see. I'm an artist also but never use colour just graphite. Ur pictures along with Colin Bradley have inspired me to start using colour. So I have bought faber castel Pitt pencils and one day aspire to reach a level such as yours. Thank you so much for putting your videos on which are responsible for re igniting a passion for art in me which had been dead for a lot of years. Best regards
+Lee Ludlow Hello Lee ~ What a lovely letter, thank you so much for taking the time to write and for your support, that means a great deal to me. Thank you too for watching my little videos. I really did them for fun but it seems that a lot of people like them. The Faber pencils are fine but also try the CarbOthello pastel pencils. They fit a little better into the electric sharpener and are a little different consistency. You can purchase them by the color which is very nice too. I'm so glad that I've re-ignited your passion for art. Now get going and make some beautiful paintings!!! Kind Regards, :)) Roby
Also...would love to see the photo you are doing your animal portrait from...your art is exceptional!
très beau chien . Merci pour ce partage de technique. J'adore votre travail. My
Myriam Masselin Hello Myriam ~ Thank you for your lovely comment, I sincerely appreciate it! :)) Roby
Thank you once again Roby I like you owned and showed dogs but my last dog was a Yorkie which I owned purely as a pet and your painting is so like her Unfortunately I had to say goodbye to her in May due to her having CancerThank you once again for sharing your wonderful talent
Hi Maureen, Oh gee...I'm so sorry that you lost your little Yorkie due to cancer! Show dogs or pets they all love us and we love them like our own babies! I'm so glad that you're enjoying my artwork and that you have taken the time to give me your support, it's very much appreciated! Thank you!! :)) Roby

Hello Vselennaya Kometa ~ Thank you such a nice thing to say, much appreciated! :)) Roby
Hello Vselennaya Kometa from Russian! Thank you very much for your lovely comments. Thank goodness we have the translate feature as I don't speak any Russian! Your compliments make me happy and I appreciate you taking the time to give me this wonderful support, fantastic for sure! It's great that even though we don't know one another we can still correspond from around the world, thank you social media! I will be posting a new video in the next couple of weeks or so another Arabian horse head so look for that soon. If you have any questions you may ask me, if I know the answer I'll share it. :) Thank you again for your lovely compliments, so very nice of you! Kind Regards, :)) Roby

You are talented, thank you for sharing
Great job
Hello Carol ~ Thank you! :)) Roby
Thank you so much for your reply roby and thank you for the kind advice. I've just ordered a pack of the pencils you suggested and Bristol board. Also I ordered a pack of 90 Rembrandt soft pastel sticks so will give those a go too. I've just started sketching out a horse ( inspired by your amazing video of the horse you did which is just breathtaking) so as I do them I shall take some pictures and upload them. Maybe you could take a look. Won't be for a while yet tho as I really need to learn to take my time. I can have a picture done in 3 hours and as we know that isn't long enough if it's done properly.
+Lee Ludlow Great, I think you'll like the CarbOthello's and the Bristol Board 500 is my favorite. It works great for my style of painting. You'll need a good sharpener and I find the X-ACTO Powerhouse electric works very well. I'll give you the link for that. Good luck and I'd be happy to take a look sometime. www.officedepot.com/a/products/595511/X-ACTO-Powerhouse-Electric-Pencil-Sharpener/
so schön, super :)
Hi anipepps~ Thank you very much! :)) Roby
You are Amazing!
Hello Anupama! Thank you I appreciate that! :)) Roby
Roby Baer So did you use Pastel pencils? what type ca you please share.Thank you.
Anupama Mahabhashyam Yes, all soft pastels. I'm using CarbOthello pastel pencils in combination with soft stick pastels. Some of my favorites are Rembrandt, Sennelier, Unison and Schmincke. I purchase my supplies at Dick Blick on-line. :)
Roby Baer Thank you!
amazing! I'm trying to teach myself how to do this so I can make a drawing of my moms yorkie who we just lost 2 weeks ago. she was our best 4 legged friend and we are so lost without her.
Hello Lauren Mac ~ Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your beloved little Yorkie. It's always SO hard to loose our darling little companions! There is nothing to do but remember the best memories and let time soften the pain of it all. I know, I've been there many times! Good luck with learning and I hope that my video will be helpful and fun for you. Healing thoughts :)) Roby
@@robertarobybaer thank you. ive never been the type to cry but we have literally cried every day since she left
ROBY, YOU ARE SIMPLY AMAZING! I CAN´T BELIEVE YOU ARE SELF TAUGHT HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO FINISH A PAINTING ? HOW DO YOU FIX THE PASTEL TO PRESERVE IT? THANK YOU VER MUCH
Fantastic;
Hello Nicole Julien ~ Thank you! :)) Roby
Elle is such a pretty wee dog and your pastel painting is just superb Roby. You have such a wonderfully light touch and an amazing talent!
How do you deal with all the excess 'chalk dust'? I end up covered in the stuff ....
Edith McClelland Hi Edith ~ Thank you, such a nice compliment! When I'm working on a painting I don't stand at my easel as I have a touchy back. I purchased a lap top lounger and it slides in my comfortable chair and has a tilt table. I attached a strip of rag foam core all along the bottom and it keeps my painting stable ( I use wood close pins to clamp at the top) and the dust falls into the slot. I don't "pile" on too much chalk with my style of painting. I also keep baby wipes at my side for a quick clean up when needed. Thank you again for your nice comment! :)) Roby
MAGNIFIQUE MERCI POUR CETTE VIDEO
Hello Mady ~ Thank you for your lovely compliment! :)) Roby
Really awesome picture, would be great to see the full unedited real time version of this to learn more of your technique, especially in finishing the eyes and nose. Thanks for sharing
Hello MaZEEZaM~ Thank you! The video's would be really long as it takes me a few days to complete a painting of this size. I try to show the most important parts because most of it is just so repetitive. I'll try to be more mindful of doing a complete eye or nose next time. Thanks again! :)) Roby
Cheers thanks, I intend to watch other videos of yours but this alone has inspired me to get back into drawing and to give pastels a go. The last time I used pastels I think I must have been about 7 or 8 years old in primary school, I am now 30 :D The pencil form of pastel will make it much more accurate and far less messy :D I am looking forward to getting a hold of a set. Unfortunately as with most things it seems in Australia they charge more than twice the cost of the UK and US prices for Art supplies so I am getting it from overseas where possible. A question though, how do pastels go with mixing the pastel with say water colour pencils? will they work together or do they clash somehow?
MaZEEZaM I'm glad that you will give the pastels a try, that's great. As for your question, since pastels are water-soluble, they work well with watercolors. So jump in and do a great mixed media painting! Good luck and have fun~ :)) Roby
Thanks :D the products are on there way, Im really looking forward to giving them a try.
MaZEEZaM That's awesome!! HAVE FUN!!!!!!
I am so amazed at how realistic this is, and it's really nice to see that it's not fake! Fantastic work of art. You have talent (:
Can you please draw a white Cockapoo puppy? They're my favourite breed of dog (:
Hi Karen! Thank you, I appreciate your nice comment. The Cockapoo's are really cute... maybe someday. :)) Roby
lindo, lindo, lindo!
Thank you Angelita! :)) Roby

Tal Créavitalité Hi Tal ~ Thank you so very much for this wonderful compliment! :)) Roby
muy bonito me encanta tu talento
Hello Paisita 1 ~ Thank you so very much, I appreciate it! :)) Roby
Roby, Absolutely Amazing !!!! You have said you use CarbOtlello chalk Pastel Pencils but I also noticed Stabilo pencils in this video wondering if one is better than the other ? And you said in another videos comments that you use an X-acto sharpener ??? I was told that you have to sharpen the chalk pencils by hand !!! Just wondering !!! Thanks
+Dawn Olmsted Hi Dawn ~ I didn't see where I answered you regarding your question, if I didn't I apologize lol! The CarbOthello and Stabilo pencils are one in the same! Using a electric or a blade is pure and simple a personal choice. I choose the electric because it is so much faster and once you get the hang of it, much less waist too. :)) Roby
I wanna be like you ):3 Your artwork is amazing :o it looks so real :O
+Tigerclaw1462 AJ Hello Tigerclaw ~ Thank you, that's so nice of you! :)) Roby

Your work is impeccable. I can only wish to be as good as you one day. What brand of pastel pencils are you using? Thanks for the great tutorial.
Hi Susan, thanks for stopping by and for the lovely comment! I am using CarbOthello pastel pencils in combination with soft stick pastels. Thanks again! :)) Roby
