- I have been asked to paint owls many times and I decided to start with a Barn Owl. I used to raise Persian Cats and the face of the Barn Owl resembles the sweet expression of those cats. Though the eyes are always one of my favorite things to paint, I enjoyed the challenge of the intricacy of the feathers in this painting.

I favorited this video probably around a year ago. Last month or so I bought a print of the finished piece without realizing where I'd seen it before, until just now when I was going back through my favorites and found it again.
You are gifted, love your paintings, made me cry.
Thank you for sharing. This owl looks so real, it looks like I could touch it. Very well done. Just beautiful. I love owls.

Magnificent again.
Fantastic!! I love your work! I love your Videos it is real time! Thank you..pleeeaaase more!
Beautiful!
As always, beautiful work, Roby. I aspire to create works even half as wonderful as yours. I would love to see you do some (even if brief) tutorials on how you render various textures (like feathers and fur) and other things, like owl eyes, etc. Thank you.
Hello DJ Stephens, thank you for your very nice comment! I sincerely appreciate it. I haven't yet built the confidence to actually talk lol!!! Maybe sometime. I can tell you though it's all about layering and blending one color in with the next when using the pencils. I lay in the first color then use the next color to blend them both in. As for doing hair, it's like putting shingles on a roof. One over the next working your way down. It's time consuming but the results are worth it. Thanks again for stopping by! :)) Roby
WOW so great you have a great talent.
ART and painting is my hobby i gonna plan to make an owl butt i did not know what owl i gonna chose so you inspired my for BARN OWL. Thanks Roby.
Wow it is owl real, awesome.
I have to say, I absolutely adore your talent! I am a huge fan of artwork, and love to draw or paint, but can never seem to get the face-shapes down correctly. I am in agreement with you about drawing and painting eyes; they're wonderful!
Great work!

Hello pigeon ~ Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to give me this lovely compliment! :)) Roby
Thanks! beautiful work, you make magic with pencils, so subtle but with such a realistic visual punch.........I'm painting an owl for the 1st time...I'm discovering that feathers are a subtle undertaking............
Hello tpe54~ Thank you very much for your great compliment, I appreciate it very much. I hope that you have a great time working on your owl painting feathers and all!! Thanks again for taking the time to comment! :)) Roby
Beautiful work, Roby. Thank you for putting these out for all of us. I had never considered pencils and chalk before today. Always wondered how in the world! And now I have seen your inspirational talent. Thanks again, San
Hi San! Thank you very much for your nice comment, I appreciate that! I enjoy doing the videos and will continue to do so. Give the pastels a try...just might be a great fit for you. Should you have any questions don't hesitate to ask me. If I know the answer I'll share it. Thanks again! :)) Roby
Wow! Literally so incredible, thank you for sharing!!
Very generous of you to share this beautiful piece, in response to the feeble criticism re: tracing photo, would be very interesting to see said persons work! Wonder if he has ever traced?? so what!!!! it served a purpose and the drawing skills are surely there if you are able to render such accomplished work. Bravo!!
Hello Victoria~ It's my pleasure to share. Since it's a linked comment I didn't see the tracing criticism. I have worked very hard over my artistic journey and have practiced thousands of hours to hone my drawing skills. I'd go one on one with anyone to prove that I have NEVER traced anything!! To me the graphite drawing is the hard part. I use a see through ruler (had this one for 40 years) measuring distances against my reference photo keeping me on track. The pastels are like I'm a little girl again coloring in my coloring book lol!! Thank you so very much for your support and "having my back" that means a lot to me! Your friend... :)) Roby
Not to butt in but did you use colored pencils before switching to pastels? I have a set but they see very hard, but they will erase! lol. Right now I'm just doing graphite and charcoal but wonder if you went through a colored pencil stage?
Hello Donna! Thank you very much for taking the time to give this wonderful comment and supporting my artwork, so much appreciated! :)) Roby
Hello! I am using the X-ACTO Powerhouse electric sharpener. I get them at Office Max. We have a local store but you can get them on-line as well. They don't get that great of ratings but I've never ever had any problems with them. If you get the warranty as soon as it gets dull you can return it for a new one, love that! When it gets dull enought to start breaking the points off consistantly, thats when I return it. :)) Roby
By definition if you fill all of the paper with pigment it is defined a painting. If the background paper plays a significant roll in the finished artwork it is defined a drawing. Because the pure powdered binders and pigments are the same as in all colored mediums including oils they are considered a painting medium. The debate on this rolls on but I consider my pastel artwork paintings as do most pastelists. :)) Roby
So beautiful! I have never tried pastels but plan to! Thank you for posting these lively videos & advice! I look forward to seeing more!
Hi Carol, thank you! I appreciate your nice comment. I hope you'll enjoy trying the pastels. Of course I love them! :)) Roby
@Twilight4Real Hello! Thank you so much!! Practice is so helpful, the more you do the better you get! :)) I use dry chalk, stick pastels and CarbOthello pastel pencils. My favorite stick pastels are Unison, Sennelier, Schmincke and Rembrandt to name a few. Thanks again! :)) Roby
Phenominal!
Hi Bruce Osborne ~ Thank you, that's very nice of you! :)) Roby

Hello nour3ain1~ thank you so very much for your nice comment! How did it turn out? :)) Roby
@TheRyanst Hello! Lets start with the paper, I use Bristol Board 500 cold press. I then use pastel sticks, some of my favorite brands.... Rembrandt, Sennilar, Schmincke (so buttery soft) Unison to name a few. I apply the pastel sticks and then push it into the paper with my fingers. Give it a try, it's fun!!
Hi there Tiffany! Thank you very much for you nice comment!! Sweet!!! :)) Roby

Hello Shirley ~ Thank you very much! :)) Roby
Hello! Thank you so much for the nice comment! :)) Roby
WOW! just WOW! did you go o art school?! and thx for the info on your tools!!! I LOVE your drawings Roberta!!!! when are you uploading another one?
@TheHorseLady1212 Hi! Aw, thanks for the sweet comment! My pencils seem to last fairly well. When you sharpen don't leave them in for too long. I have found that especially with a new sharpener you only need to leave it in about one or two seconds after your initial sharpening. Any longer and you just grind off needlessly. The sharpener that I use is the X-ACTO Powerhouse that I purpchase at Office Max. Get the warrenty to go with it, it saves in the long run!
@theeachuisge Hello! Thanks very much! I use Strathmore Illustration or Bristol Board 500 series cold press Vellum the 10 ply. My pencils are Stabilo CarbOthello pastel pencils and some of my favorite soft pastel sticks are Unison, Sennelier, Schmincke and Rembrandt. :)) Roby
Hi Dimitrios! Thank you very much, I sincerely appreciate that you took the time to respond to seeing my video, that's great!! :)) Roby
Hi Melanie, I'm using all soft pastels. My pencils are CarbOthello pastel pencils and I get them at Dick Blick on-line. To achieve the "fluff" it's about adding layers and contrasts. If you'll notice I lay in a color and then use next color to blend them both in. That gives you a soft look then continue on with the same process. For shading use your darker shades to recede and the lighter colors to stand out, that gives the painting depth and dimention. :) Roby
Hi Melanie! Thank you so much for the great support, much appreciated! :)) Roby
Hi there! If you love drawing just keep going with it! It will bring you joy :)) Roby
I think you could have just painted up to the eyes and beak being finished, and left it at that w the pencil drawing below and it still would have been stunning. W the completed full owl and background, it’s beyond stunning!
Hello Jessica ~ Aw, thank you so very much for your lovely compliment! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and support my artwork, so sweet! :)) Roby
Oh my god you are amazing! Who knew the white pencil was actually of use, haha. I can barely even draw stick figures. Give me your talent.
