Painting a Day Demonstration - Wolf Eyes by Roberta "Roby" Baer

- Painting this wolf was comfortable for me because I have painted many dog portraits over the years. The difference between painting a wolf rather than a dog is the intense eye color and the majesty that a wolf exudes. I have been able to spend some time around wolves and that has given me the ability to see more than just what a photograph can capture. This is the reason why I chose to put most of the focus on the eye in this video. I want to thank my dear friend Kelsey for putting together all of these videos for me. THANK YOU! Prints of this painting are currently for sale in my ebay store: stores.ebay.com...
Ms. Baer, you are truly a Master in pastels! Amazing craftsmanship! As per Heather.... I'm sure that Ms. Baer could painting anything just as good as she does with pastels or with a brush in any medium. However, she choose to perfect her talent in pastels. Art is Art in any medium. What's important is not the tool so much but how you execute it with the skills and the medium. And, Ms. Bear you are truly one of the best artist I've seen painting or drawing (lol) in pastels.
Hi Jasmine! Thank you very much for your most generous compliment, truly this means a great deal to me! My level of achievement has been a journey that I call "paying artist dues" they have to be paid in the form of practice. Having a passion for painting no matter the medium and some natural talent haven't hurt in achieving some goals. Thank you again for back up and your glowing comment, whether it's a painting or a drawing it's art to me and I love it! :)) Roby
This is not just a painting; you gave it life to step right out from the paper! You are an inspiration indeed. Thank you!
Roberta are you using Rembrandt soft pastells? I can notice the high quality pigmentation of them
Congratulations for show such high technique, be a self taught, better than many others that had pass trough an art faculty
Hello Angela, yes I'm using Rembrandts. Some of my other favorites are Unison, Sennelier and Schmincke. Thank you for such a lovely compliment. I always feel a bit on the shy side about my work because maybe I'm not doing it correctly but I just press on anyway lol! Thanks again... :)) Roby

Cool that you met that wolf in person! I know about the practice and mistakes part of this art stuff. My medium is clay and after many years I am still goofing up and learning. I say, "fail early, fail often" . I guess that's my motto. Anyway, you are generous to let us watch. Thanks.

So I love watching those of you who create animals, my favorite subject. Especially lions and wolves. 😊

What a beautiful wolf!!!! ♥♥♥♥ Very well done.
I hope the reason why 8 people disliked it is MJ song. Even that would be wrong. This is a piece of art, wonderful, amazing job, especially from someone who didn't visit art school. Bravo. I'm jealous.
O boy, if i would only be half as good as that...
Love your work.

Hello RickU5711! What a wonderful compliment to give me today, thank you very much. I appreciate that you took the time to view my video and then to support my artwork with your kind comments, thank you again! :)) Roby
@IringPalo I use Bristol Board 500 it has a fairly smooth texture with a great tooth for pastels so you don't spend too much time filling in the little white spots left behind by other papers.
@IringPalo Hi Palo, I paint every day as happily it is my job! I've been able to paint full time for the past 10 years and I love every minute of it! Not sure when I'll do the next video, since I just finished the Friesian horse video a week ago.
You are simply amazing Roby, started falling in love with u and ur art
Actually incredible! The fur is just astonishing, and obviously the eyes are too :)
simply stunning
Starting to like pastels over colored pencils. Watching as much of your work as possible. Just love your work💜🇨🇦
Hello Tanya Chmilar ~ I did try colored pencils many years ago and they're great but my preference by far is the pastel pencils. It's a personal choice as both are wonderful. Glad you're enjoying them too! Thanks so much for your lovely compliment and support. :)) Roby
Man, I love your artwork!!!!!!!!!
Hi again! Thank you for the information regarding the daily paintings. I will take a good look at that! Thanks for the heads up. :)) Roby
@debbiesanimalartwork
Thank you so much!!! I've been painting for a good many years now. I paint mostly in pastels but do other mediums as well. The CarbOthello pastel pencils are similar to the Derwent and others but they are my top choice! I use Bristol board 500 cold press paper mounted on rag foamcore. Thanks!
My mind just blew up...Great art you got here! I'm only 13 but i just LOVE drawing. I hope I can be as good as you some day. It's people like you who inspire me! Keep Up the AMAZING work! :)

LOL....cracked me up! What a nice thing to say, that's wonderful! :)) Roby
Hello Elizabeth! I am using pastels for my demo's. I do a full detailed pencil sketch first to keep me on track. Everyone has a different way of working and I need a reference photo and my drawing. The drawing for me is the most difficult part of the process. The rest is pure fun!!! :)) Roby
AWESOME talent....Your my hero....Pat
This is amazing! It's sooo beautiful!
Hi Lidia! Thank you very much, that's so nice of you! I appreciate your support! :)) Roby
and now am just so jealous and wanting to have your skills so bad! You are Amazing
Brilliant work, I thought the blue on the eye lid was strange when I first saw it in the vid, but once you were done and panned the camera back; it looked amazing.
Hi. Boy you got the "wolfness" completely. I felt that the wolf was looking right at you while you created his eyes. I can't believe I would be able to handle that much energy coming at me during the session
. Must be a wonderful feeling to be able to do such a fabulous job. You just amaze me. :)
Hello! Thank you! I use CarbOthello pastel pencils in combination with soft stick pastels. Some of my favorite brands are Rembrandt, Sennelier, Unison and Schmincke. My paper is Strathmore Illustration or Bristol Board 500 series cold press Vellum 10 ply. LOVE wolves!! :)) Roby
Beautiful! I did not realize that you could utilize pencils and have such a dramatic realism as you did in this pic.
Hello! Thanks! Good for you, keep it going. We always have something to learn on each and every painting. It's a fun and difficult and rewarding journey! Enjoy the ride! :)) Roby

Maria Denize Calígrafiaantiga Hi Maria! You're more than welcome...thank you for this glowing comment, so sweet of you! Thanks again from sunny California! :)) Roby
It's really great to see your technique, it helps me alot so thank you VERY much!
Hello Kayleigh! I am using CarbOthello pastel pencils in combination with soft stick pastels. Some of my favorite brands are Rembrandt, Sennelier, Unison and Schmincke. My paper is Strathmore Illustration or Bristol Board 500 series cold press Vellum. I get most of my supplies at Dick Blick on-line. I lay in the color then use the "next" color to blend the previous layer rather than smudging. Like what an oil painter does when mixing colors. I just do it right on my paper as I go. Good luck Roby
Hello! Thanks for the great comment. I does take a lot of work but I love doing it! Thanks for taking the time to write. :)) Roby
