    I've noticed that in general extremely talented artists like yourself get relatively few likes on RUclips - it really is such a shame that talent and skill like yours doesn't get the reaction it deserves. The irony is that if one of the young youtube 'influencers' critiqued your work they would likely get tens of thousands of likes - fantastic work

      Hello ASHLEY OUT, Wow, what a wonderful compliment from you. You've just made my day with your comment! You're right and it seems that's the way it goes here on RUclips. I have worked so hard for so many years developing my skills before the internet was a thing and you could just go google it lol! I only wanted to share how I do my style of pastel painting here on RUclips for no other reason but to share what I've learned along the way on my art journey. With the nice comments from artists wanting more I kept filming and posting. It's because I nice people like you that I continue because there certainly isn't more than a very small pittance of monetary return for my efforts. I like helping out and sharing what I've learned even thought I'm self-taught. Thank you SO very much for sharing your thoughts with me and for your wonderful support! :)) Roby

    Holy Buckets! Another winner in the hper-realism and enchanting pastel category! This is right up my ally and I totally appreciate you capturing the charm this little bird exudes in my garden! I always love watching you do the eyes! So it hit me how much incredible detail you can do in really a small space! I'd have to bust out the magnifying glass! That touch of brown in the back ground absolutely made the eye POP! Perfect! Thank you for the video. I learn something every time and am always inspired!

      Hi Shelley ~ Thank you so much for your lovely compliments, very nice! Aren't they just the cutest little bird. They've always been one of my favorites so I thought it was time to add to my Chickadee collection lol. I started doing these small paintings for my collectors as my larger paintings are spendy and not for everyone. I want anyone that would like to collect my work be able to affordably. I wanted to give the same detail that my larger paintings have so I've been working hard to make that happen. So...long story short that's what spawned these detailed small paintings. So glad that you're able to learn from my videos, that's an extra bonus for me! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment! :)) Roby

    Oh wow Roby this is incredible. I’m blown away but your amazing skill. I love the texture in the feathers and tiny hairs. Your paintings are so realistic and draw the viewer in emotionally aswel. I honestly can’t imagin a better background for this little bird. Your colour selection is incredible. I really struggle with that part of every painting. I was watching and thinking “I’d have never thought to add blue in the wooden branch” and look how it works so perfectly. You make what is so difficult look like a walk in the park. This is truly amazing and once again you amaze me with your incredible skill as an artist. Truly beautiful Roby xxx

    Absolutely gorgeous work, it always baffles me when I see a wonderful video such as this and see thumbs down, of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I personal think RUclips should make it that when a thumbs down is submitted the individual down it should write an explanation. I only say this because RUclips have made the thumbs up and down thing quite important for the youtubers channel rankings and so to make sure that spiteful jealous people aren’t just causing problems, I feel a small explanation. I know when I get them on my channel I would find it so much mor helpful if I was told why they didn’t like the video and if I could fix it for the following video then that would would be a plus all round. Wonderful work

    • @robertarobybaer
      @robertarobybaer  5 лет назад

      Hello The Art Gear Guide ~ Thank you so very much for your wonderful compliments! I couldn't agree with you more about getting the thumbs down. I almost wrote something yesterday but erased it because I didn't want to sound like I was whining about getting these negative actions. Why don't they have to have their name or channel just like for a comment!? And most importantly give a reason! It could be something constructive to make the video better. It's so easy to just click that thumbs down and it's hurtful. It takes a lot of effort to film, edit and put these videos together and it's so easy to just click that negative. I realize everyone has an opinion and that's fine but if you're going to click that thumbs down think first how the artist feels when that happens, give a reason! Thank you so much again for your POSITIVE and wonderful comment and sharing the same feelings with me! Kind Regards, :)) Roby

    Beautiful work especially for such a small painting. On the subject of ‘thumbs down’, I think perhaps some people object to speed and no commentary because they are wanting free tuition. I always watch at reduced playback speed which enhances the video but messes up the music. Carry on the good work, I’ve only just found you.

      Hello Barbara ~ Thank you for your nice compliment, I appreciate that very much! When I first started to post my video's it was to share my style and I never meant them to be an actual teaching aid. I kept getting asked for more so I did keep adding but with no audio. I'm not a teacher and have never charged anyone for lessons. I simply just wanted to share. I've taken some criticism along the way and I have to say that it does upset me to get a thumbs down right off the bat. I get so many wonderful compliments like yours that does keep me going as this is really a pain to film and edit and post. Glad you found me and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! :)) Roby

    How do you keep those pencils so sharp? My pastel pencils constantly break when I sharpen them. Oh, someone asked the same question. x-Acto Pencil Sharpener. Beautiful painting.

      @robertarobybaer  Год назад

      Hi Holly, one of the reasons is that the blades are dull on the electric sharpener and that will snap the tips off. As soon as my X-Acto starts breaking tips I replace it. Also, try not to drop your pastel pencils as that breaks the pastel inside and they are impossible to sharpen. Thanks for stopping by! :)) Roby

    Thank u very much for this bird demonstration, which had to be seen several times. For me it is a marvellous gem - your pencil strokes, blending with d pencil tip-side so effortlessly, a lllott to pickup for me.... do u not use pastelmat or UArt papers at all ? Only CarbOthello pencils, not FabreCastell Pitt pastels or kohinoor Gioconda pastel pencils at all?
    Actually Bristol 500 / vellum etc are not available to my town in india.
    Hope some more bird pictures from u for which I am eager.

      Hello Abhijit Bandyopadhyay ~ You're very welcome, thanks for viewing! I'm really glad that you were able to pick up some pointers from my little painting, great! It really boils down to practicing, that's the key to improvement. I only use Bristol Board 500 series paper. I know it so well and an used to it. There are a lot of really good papers but I stick with the Bristol because it works for my style so well. It has plenty of tooth and I can apply several layers both with the pencils and sticks. I only use CarbOthellos as they are color fast and have a great soft texture that blend so well with my pastel sticks. They are in my eye's one of the top pastel pencils and my go to. They are not as soft as the sticks but work great for the details on my paintings. Can you have the Bristol shipped to you? That's how I purchase mine from Dick Blick on line. I'll give you the link. Be sure to get Vellum not Plate! Papers are a personal choice, I'd suggest that you try them out to decide which one works best for you. I will be doing a hummingbird and bee's drinking at my fountain for my next video so stay tuned as I'm working on it now. Thanks for stopping by with you lovely comments and support! :)) Roby www.dickblick.com/products/strathmore-500-series-illustration-board/

      Hi Randy, I don't use any fixatives. I know they're are some good archival fixatives but I choose to pass. I know that a lot of artists will use them in their layering process but not to fix at the completion. Thanks for your support, much appreciated! :)) Roby

    how do you get your CarbOthello pencils so sharp? mine just break :-/

    • @robertarobybaer
      @robertarobybaer  5 лет назад +1

      Hello Beth ~ I'm using the X-Acto Powerhouse electric sharpener and have for years now. The number one thing that breaks the tips is the blades are dull. Another reason is the pencil has been dropped and it breaks the pastel inside and you can no longer sharpen them. Also, you need to be sure that you hold your pencil very straight, if you angle it too much it will break the tip too. I purchase two at a time and buy the warranty which lets you replace it when the blades get dull and consistently break the tips. I consider the sharpeners a necessary part of my materials and find they last for a good amount of time. :)) Roby

      I've been using Bristol 500 for many years and it works great for my style. Actually it has plenty of tooth and you can achieve many layers with both the sticks and pencils. There are a lot of great papers, Bristol is my go to. Be sure it's the Vellum and not Plate as Plate is smooth as glass! Happy painting! :)) Roby

    Amazing drawing! I notice that your pastel pencils are very sharp to a point, may I ask which pencil sharpener do you use to sharpen your pastel pencils? I always break my pastel pencils when I try to sharpen them. Thanks!

    • @robertarobybaer
      @robertarobybaer  5 лет назад

      Hi Pawlps ~ I'm using the X-Acto Powerhouse Electric. I've been using them for years and love them. They don't get the best of reviews but I've never had one bit of trouble with them. Some of the reasons for the tips breaking is the sharpener blades are dull and that will break the tip every time. Try to keep the pencil very straight in the sharpener, if you're off and it's tilting that will break the tip. Lastly, be careful not to drop your pastel pencils as that will break the pastel inside and you won't be able to sharpen. Once your sharpener consistently breaks the tips its time for a new one as the blades have become too dull for pastels. You can still use them for graphite though. www.officedepot.com/a/products/595511/X-ACTO-Powerhouse-Electric-Pencil-Sharpener/

      One last thing, I don't use any other type pencils in this sharpener, just pastels. Once I retire it from pastels then I use it for graphite pencils. It will sharpen them without any problem for a long time!

    • @minipainter2

      bamabev79 Hi - I’m sure Roby will respond with her thoughts on this, but in the meantime, would you mind mine? I spent too many years thinking I’d use less expensive paper whilst I learnt my skills. Oh how I wish I’d have understood how important it is to have the best support one can afford - here’s the important part - save until you can afford the best and paint smaller images so the paper goes farther. For instance, the paper Roby uses allows her to achieve the detail and blended effects we love so much. The pencils are artist quality and can be bought individually, ditto the sticks. You’ll notice she uses only a few colors, all of which can be used for many different images. So you could buy one large sheet of paper and cut it into small ones, or find a similar small pad - artist quality. These supplies will last a long time. If you’ll paint the same image over and over, you’ll refine your skills much faster than painting a new one every time. You can slow the viewing rate of these videos to get a better idea of how the marks are made, as well as talking screen shots of the pencil/stick being used, to take with you to the art store/online shop to help with acquiring the colors. Eventually you’ll know what color is being used when you see it. The “tricks” for achieving this quality of painting are: patience, practice (and every painting is practice), top quality supplies, and enough detail in the drawing to guide your application of color. In time you’ll collect a wider range of supplies, so there’s no need to spend money on extras. Believe me, most artists are supply junkies (addicts), and you may have to fight your own addiction every time you go to a store, forcing yourself to bypass all the yummies put there to separate you from your money. No one ever said they regretted buying the very best. Good luck!
      Roby - I hope you’ll forgive me if you’d rather I hadn’t written this. I e learnt more from you over the years than I can say. God bless you and your family. - Linda.

      @@minipainter2 Thank you so much for your response! I am already an art junkie & have only just begun! I have, however, learned not to rush out & buy everything someone says is their favorite though!😊 I now know the importance of buying the best quality papers after wasting money, & time, on less expensive ones though! I will do what you recommend though & cut up my paper to do smaller works. People like you have made my foray into the art world even more enjoyable & I thank you so very much for your advice!
