    Beautifully explained, easy to see and I hope to follow. Perfect shape, nicely rounded, ever so gently coloured - it all comes together so well. I never knew pastels could be layered so nicely, the overall effect is fantastic. 🙏💕

    Excellent Video, Emma. I had made a start at my own videos on landscapes, but after a week's preparation and scripting work came to the conclusion that the preparation and the need to have someone skilled handling the camera, probably ruled out the idea. Perhaps I will have another look at it...... I will certainly subscribe, you deserve the support. Peter

      Thanks Peter, it's still a learning curve for me but I feel I managed to edit this one a little better than the others. I don't have a fancy set up either, just a small camcorder set up on a tripod while I work. It's the editing stages I find laborous and confusing! Hopefully it'll get easier.

    I am new to the velour and I have been working on the Irish Setter. I had the eyes all drawn out perfect and during the course of putting the color, I seem to get them crooked. I also pressed harder with the black and then pushed it in but then I wasn't able to get any white over it.
    I'm thinking that perhaps I should take one sheet and cut it up to smaller pieces and then practice on the various parts of the body - animals and people portraits.
    I've had a hard time even starting a portrait on the velour since it's so expensive and the only way I can get more is if I can sell something. That 1st portrait that I did was on Sennelier - you would know the one of my niece - where you gave me a 2nd place with the prize of a critique. Velour is so different but I love the soft quality it gives your portraits. [That was the contest for Patreons back in May of 2020].

    well good morning to you Emma.
    I'm not Graham, but whilst he was looking up guitar/ukelele videos your's popped up as well. JUST what i'm into, pastel, velour Faber pitt pencils the lot. You are a real answer to prayer.
    loved this and the final picture is beautiful.
    My struggle is with backgrounds I love the way Fudge and Oriol are on the sofa. Really homely but I struggle with this sort of thing on velour.
    (and there is absolutely nothing wrong with your lovely soft voice, it complements your work brilliantly!! Hope Spain was enjoyable)

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  7 лет назад +1

      Hello Graham's other half (haha you didn't give me your name!) We have a lot more in common I think with a partner who sits looking up guitar/ukelele videos! Glad you've found my tutorials helpful. I'm in the process of making more but workload has taken over for a couple of months with tight deadlines. I hope to cover a lot more subjects in the future and will do my best to get my two new videos uploaded very soon. Backgrounds were always my weakness too, especially landscapes. So those are what I worked most on for a few years. Happy painting!

      Hi Emma thanks for that I did do a reply but dont know where it has gone! I have had a go at 'blurry backgrounds' on my last three pet portraits (SAA Painters online gallery)Lola Pebbles and Charlie. They dont look tooo bad but I have a lot of work to do yet,
      Yes Graham gets sidetracked with wi fi headphones and guitar and ukelele but then i dont mind hiving off and painting!!!
      Thanks again. I look forward to your next video. Goodness knows how you manage to find time to do them, but they are so appreciated.
      Enjoy your travelings while you have the good health.
      God bless Joan

    That was fantastic! If you have a video on s horse's eye please let me know ❤️ a lot of what you taught would be applicable. It's just that eye has a rectangular pupil and I have seen other pastelists that can not seem to get it right and it's easy to have it to flat into the head or protruding too far. They are such beautiful creatures I would love to do them justice. Also , thank you for sharing your knowledge, you are a good teacher 😊

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the feedback Teresa! I don't have any horse videos at the moment. My library is small as they are time consuming to make. I'm working on two people portrait videos right now and will keep the horse subject in mind. I have painted some horses which you can see the progression of on my blog at www.emmacolbertart.com/category/horses/. Not sure I took progress of the eyes though.

    Love the speed you work at & love the sound of your voice, don't fret about either! I have just come across your videos and am looking forward to seeing more of your short tutorials focusing on just one area at a time. I enjoy painting animals with pastel pencils using the Faber Castell pit pencils only. After watching you, I would like to try working with the soft pastels as well. My greatest difficulty is keeping the paper free of smudges. I use paper under my hand, but somehow still manage to smudge. Any tips?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  7 лет назад

      Hi Reni, thanks for commenting, I appreciate the feedback. My main tip for not smudging is to try and work from the top down which is a natural thing to do a lot of the time working from the background to the foreground. I always ensure I have a clean place on the paper to anchor when I need to. But when working with the pastels you can free up a little more than with pencil so I know there are times I don't need to lean. Have a go with some soft pastels along with your pencils, I think you'd like it. I have links to some info on good pastels in the description below the videos.

      Emma Colbert Art - Hi Emma, thank you for your prompt reply. Just one other query please. I have done some "googling" on velour papers. So many people say that their work just falls off if they give it a tap on the back to remove excess pastel dust. How do you overcome that? I love the look of your work on the velour paper but these remarks have me thinking if it's worth paying so much money for the velour. And how do you cope with the pastel dust in your magnificent mobile home? 😝

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  7 лет назад

      Hi Reni, if you check out my blog post at www.emmacolbertart.com/2016/04/15/pastel-tips-using-velour/ you'll find lots of tips on working on velour. Over the years my work has become really stable on it as I've figured out different ways to improve how I work on it. I post my work worldwide and it arrives intact ready for framing. I have no real issues with velour any more, however I went through them all at the beginning and it can be frustrating. The most important tip is mounting the paper on something firm. Taking the flexibilty out of it is the best way to start. Hope you find the rest helpful and good luck!

    Love your art. So Beautiful! Thank you for the explanation. How do you make the initial sketch? Why does nobody ever show that? Is it a secret?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  6 лет назад

      Thanks Irene! I think the reason I don't usually show my line sketch process is because I'm trying to teach pastel specifically, not drawing. But it is important and the current series of short tutorials I'm filming show me sketch from the beginning. I have to transfer my sketch onto the velour paper I use as I can't rub out on velour. So it's a bit of a long process for me. It's different for every artist though and there really is no right or wrong. I often use a grid to speed me up a little.

    Hello Emma from Italy. We need something positive to focus on at this time! I like the idea of one feature at a time. It is easier not to be overwhelmed this way. By the way, you dont seem to be using glassine to protect smudging. Do you use a stick or something to not touch the paper with your palm. Wonderful work..thankyou!

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  4 года назад +1

      Hi Elena, I tend to work upright at an easel. I think for this reason I don't always lean. But when I do, because I work mostly from top to bottom, I don't ruin finished areas when I lean my hand on the piece. This is an older tutorial before I upgraded my equipment. Make sure you check out the full playlists of newer ones :-)

    Hi Emma, Love your instruction here, lovely video and your voice is beautiful. However, I heard you blowing the pastel many times throughout the video and I have always heard that you shouldnt do that, the pastel will get into the air and your lungs and all over everything.. I tap the back of my work from time to time and let the pastel dust fall straight down into a catcher. I hope you dont mind me pointing this out to you. Brilliant pastel painting here and I look forward to looking at more of your work. Thanks

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  6 лет назад

      Thank you Loren and I don't mind you pointing that out at all as it's a point I agree with. This being my first tutorial I didn't think of the sound track. As a rule I don't normally blow on the pastel, but when working up really close to the eyes I do give the pupil a blow to remore the tiny amounts of residue I'm creating. It's a very directional blow just on the eye which doesn't produce a classic puff of pastel haha! But I'm aware of the negative reinforcement it's giving by being in the video. Will make a note of mentioning this in a future tutorial :-)

    do you ever use a fixative on your work?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  6 лет назад

      I don't tend to use fixative as it doesn't help the velour much. It's fine to spray the lower layers a bit, it's really personal preference. I think I started rubbing it in and not applying the pastel as thickly instead. Once framed behind glass that is their true protection for life.
