The original idea was to keep their identities all anonymous and it worked for a while. Only grave diggers knew who they really were. But after a law suit in 2016/2017, all their names had to be revealed, so this anonymous thing was cast aside (even thou they still wear mask on concerts and are called by their personas, never the real name). Tobias Forge is the founder, leader, songwriter and the only permanent members. All the others are kinda "hired stage musicians". There were periods where the changes were almost weekly and it was hard as hell to keep track of who was in the band. The current line up has been steady for a long time now, giving the "whole band" vibe again. And yes, Tobias was the only singer since the very beginning. He can also sing gutural and he's very good at it, actually. He had a Death Metal band previous to Ghost called "Repugnant".

Tobias IS Ghost in the same way Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails or Mikael Akerfeldt is Opeth. He pretty much writes and records most of the music you hear on the albums (although to say he does it all himself would be misleading). He has a group of touring musicians that essentially get paid a salary but aren't "official" members of the band, and many of those people have come and gone. There's so much more that can be said and discussed about all of it but that's pretty much it in a very large nutshell.

This was a good choice for this album, this song was their first “hit” if you will, not in the sense that it got them crossover appeal but of that first record it was the go to song for concerts and the most popular from the album I’d say. And yes, all of their albums have different sounds, the first 3 being my favorite of theirs but I think you’d probably like a lot from their 4th album Prequelle.

You described Ghost pretty well! They have a lot of haters between metal elitists annoyed by their image and lack of metal and, of course, the evangelicals. I iust think they're good fun if you can avoid trying to play genre police. You're right that they change their sound up a lot. It's mostly from album to album, but the last couple are just filled with variety. I like "Rats" and "Faith" a lot.

Based on what you said you've loved most about Ghost there's 2 songs you need to put at the top of your list. 1) He Is (I recommend the video). This is arguably the best thing Ghost has ever written, and it's 1000% distilled and concentrated cheerful/beautiful/glorious Ghost but about "bad things". It's my favorite Ghost song, it's absolute fucking genius. 2) Zombie Queen. Quirky, upbeat, insanely catchy. Both songs are heavy on vocal harmonies, both are deeply beloved by fans. Can't WAIT to see you react to them!

  • @malreynolds7309

Do they sound like a completely different group every song? Not on the first album. But after that, they start shifting genres more regularly as each new album comes out. By the third album, you can't really predict which genre they're going to play in from one song to the next. All Tobias cares about is writing good songs. He doesn't care about the genre of rock so much.

When you look up the lyrics for Ritual, it is actually showing it from their life performance of the song on the "Ceremony and Devotion" live album. They are playing in San Francisco and that's why he says "Frisco" when talking to the crowd.

Great! Tobias loves death metal and ABBA - both which show up here. Ghost has evolved with every album. The 2nd album (with Year Zero), the band had more budget and added choirs, and more varied instruments. With the 3rd album (which had Cirice), they had some of the best in the business to produce and mix. Check out Rats, and Faith from their 4th album, or Spillways or Call Me Little Sunshine from Impera from 2022.

Ritual is awesome 🤘. Check out Elizabeth or Stand By Him from the same record ❤️ Ooh, one more thing. There is no band. It's all Tobias Forge . On Opus Eponymous he wrote the whole album, plays guitar, sings and produced. Only got help with drums (Ludvig Kennberg) and Gustav Lindström (Bass) but they are not part of the live band. Gustav was a member of the live band for a very short time but Ludvig never played live. And the live band never played on the records except Martin Persner who plays a little on some records but is not a part of the group anymore.

Aksel played drums on Infestissumam. And live...so not quite true😊. Tobias is Ghost, but would not be what he is without the other musicians. In a band everybody has an input. Small or big. Tobias has the last word, but to say he does everything I think is a bit misleading. He also depends on a lot of people around him.

“One notable departure was the major split between vocalist Tobias Forge and the rest of the band in 2016, which resulted in a years-long lawsuit over allegedly unpaid royalties. The lawsuit was decided in Forge's favor in 2018, and an appeal by the former bandmates was thrown out by a Swedish appeals court in 2019.”

    Ghoul explanation:
So, Ghost is mostly just a solo project of Tobias Forge. He writes, composes, comes up with ideas, even plays most of the instruments on the studio versions. (Like the ones you listened to.) Except that live, he can’t really play all those instruments. So he hires the nameless ghouls to play at concerts. They don’t really talk, they have these identical outfits, and of course, they don’t have names. But they used to.
The band started out with Tobias and some friends to play as the ghouls while he played as Papa, and they even had names at that point. In 2017, the ghouls sued Tobias because they felt like they deserved a bigger place in the band (basically. it’s a long story but that’s a short summary), and so when Tobias proved how much of Ghost was his project the ghouls lost the case. So then they were gone from the band and then Tobias hired new ghouls (and even some ghoulettes) to take their place.
Now they don’t have names, (not officially, but the fans gave them names that everyone generally agrees on) and some new roles were added for instruments. And throughout all that, there were some times pre-2017 that a member might leave for a bit so that’s why at some points there were replacements. And it’s easy to because of the masks and outfits. Right now the current ghouls seem to be here to stay though, so it does feel like a band. Just a band where one member does most the work, lol.

The first album is heavier than their 2nd and 3rd albums. But Meliora (Ghost's 2nd album) is their best album. Not one bad song on it.
What do you get when you combine Blue Oyster Cult, Abba and the lyricism of Slayer? You get Ghost.
Satan doesn't come as your foe, he comes as your friend. Then you're screwed.
    Fun, poppy, and slightly evil.

Tobias is the only true member of the band, at least on the albums. The touring band has been different people but the current touring band is made up of people who have stuck around the longest and many fans now consider them "the band." As for Tobias Forge, he was also the vocalist & songwriter for the 90s death metal band Repugnant. So if you wonder if that's him doing darker vocals (on this and later songs), yep. And on the albums it's not as heavy as live. His growly vocals are great and sometimes I lament that Repugnant never made it big because that was a really good 80s style death metal band.

You don't get it. They were not sacrifices on an altar. They sacrificed there lives, as a soldier would to get the ancient knowledge to people. Did you not hear " Through pestilence and famines, these ancient scrolls arrived."?
They also ask the people in attendance to " pray for those who died". So, it's no different then when a Christian sings about Christ and those who were faithful dieing for the spread of Christianity. I think you need to go back and hear it again.if this was your take.
