In the studio versions, he often does backning vocals also. But on stage, they are 9 persons, and several of them do backing vocals. I freaking love this song!
Your reaction is 100% the same one I had, hahaha! This song was my introduction to Ghost, because I'm a basic bitch, apparently. Since then, I've become completely enamored and can't stop listening. The live version of Mary on a Cross, live in Tampa, is fun to watch. If you're curious about the lore/background of Ghost, check out all the "episodes" they put out on their channel.
This has become my fave channel. Your take is pretty much mine. Your insights and wry sense of humor add a lot. I bought the vinyl the day it came out. Liked it a lot but it has since grown to one of my favorites. Keep up the good work!
Mary on a cross was first released back in 1969 with the original singer of Ghost, Papa Nihil! In fact it was released on september the 13th which is the same day Scooby Doo premiered on American tv. It was re released 50 years later in 2019 with his son Cardinal Copia singing. All of this is of course made up by Tobias and not true except for the Scooby Doo part that actually premiered that day and of course Tobias who has been accused of playing Scooby Doo Metal by the people that hate Ghost picked up on that and gave them the finger Back without them knowing it. Yes, Tobias never leaves something without a plan behind it. That's something you have to remember every time you listen or watch a video.
Saw them live finally for the first time back on August 4th. Ive been to alot of shows and Ghost easily was at the top, from the presentation, to how the band sounded as a whole was flawless. Cannot recommend seeing them enough will blow you away.
Highly recommend you check out more of their other stuff on their newest album, IMPERA! Would love to see you react to songs like “Griftwood” and “Watcher in the Sky” next!
Now when you have done the lyrics version (thanks fot that by the way), you should really treat yourself to watch the official live video. It´s pure magic in all senses, sound, vocal performance, audience participation and so on.
l love tobias forge's voice and ghost's songs be so catchy they has become 1 of my fav bands the "l will tickle you internally" can be a polite way to say "l will f*ck you" least that be my take on it and yes the ghouls do do backing vocals and harmonies ya can see them doin it on the live versions of ghost's songs
Bloody Mary, drink with alcohol in it. Mary on a cross or Marijuana cross, funny type of cigarette that will tickle your insides. Keep speeding the cities while riding high. Keep having fun with music.
Thank you for your reaction) This is what I've really been waiting for. Your reaction to Mummy Dust will be interesting. At concerts (rituals) it follows immediately after Mary On A Cross.
Ghost, Tool, and the Sugarcubes are the three bands I'd take with me before happily stranding myself on a desert island. Edit: Also, you're first RUclipsr who's really given the line "I will tickle you internally" the justice it deserves. Well done.
Like most viewers of your Ghost journey, I hope you will do a video of the "Live In Tampa" version of this classic song. Also, as Tobias himself might say, "I suffer you to watch & review the music video spectacle that is "Spillways" in the very near future". 😈🤘👻
Maybe it's just me...but to tickle is to make someone laugh... internally, like in the heart...to make someone laugh in their heart... but that's how I see it anyway. But Tobia's leaves a lot up to personal interpretation... it's just part of Ghost. :)
My bf is a fan (and found Ghost before me), so he'd know what I'm talking about if I said that line to him. He'd probably turn it around and say something to make me flustered though.
If you laughed at the “tickle you internally” part, please please please react to Kiss the Go Goat, the other track on the same EP. It is another really catchy 60s esque tune with the same amazing Ghost aura over it
First, the song lyrics are about trying to make it as a band and failing but enjoying the ride. The chorus is about a marijuana cross, which is three joints fixed into a cross. The marijuana smoke tickles you internally. Bloody Mary is probably Tobias' character from Repugnant, Mary Goore. And none of the touring ghouls perform on the albums. His daughter performed on the most recent album, but I think Tobias does all the male vocals himself and hires musicians for the studio to perform everything else. He writes all the songs. No one who tours with the band now has written any Ghost song. In fact, only one former member of Ghost not named Tobias ever wrote any songs (Year Zero, your first, was written by Tobias and Martin, a former "nameless ghoul"). But he's been out of the band for 7 years.
Aha on that Bloody Mary reference. Always thought of it as "not another boring alcohol based drug". But right, it could also refer to Tobias killing off Mary Goore and his death metal engagement just to give finger to the haters of what he and Ghost have become.
Back in Highschool I met a nice girl who was cute and fun and we had a movie date at her house. It was a Steven King movie where these monsters ate up the end of each day. Anyway while lying on the couch we fooled around and I tickled her internally lol. It was a good date and a fun time. There, now you have a story about that :)
The co-writers of this song have written songs for artists including Avicii, Axwell & Ingrosso, David Guetta, Katy Perry, Madonna, Swedish House Mafia, Seinabo Sey and Lady Gaga. Thats the reason why it is so catchy =)
@@guts9160 Yep, totaly wrong to wright songs with your pals. The music community aint that big in a small coutry as Sweden. And I guess that you know that alot of successfull songwriters have their background in rockmusic, and it usually spills over to popmusic.
@@guts9160Bit of an odd reason to lose respect, collaboration with those outside your usual wheelhouse can aid both your creation and yourself, even if you simply dislike the genre and culture of pop, I doubt Ghost had much of a problem with that considering they've previously covered songs like Crucified, which while very much a deep song with subtext against Christianity, can still be considered pop, the blending of genres sounds good, and at the end of the day is a good thing. Metal has historically been related to breaking the mold and going against the norm, I'd say if Ghost is going against the norm for Metal, then that's very on brand.
Huge Ghost fan but for some reason this one is a little cheesy. I do love that you’re getting drawn in by them though. Your facial expressions KILL ME✌️❤️👻
Another good one from you, Lauren :-) As I have said before, the band has a huge lore that takes more than a commentary field to explain.. but.. Behind the band (according to the lore), is the "Ministry of Ghost", controlled by a group called "The Clergy" who in the late 60:s early 70:s wanted to push the satanic message through rock music. The lore says they formed Ghost back then, and the band released a couple of songs namely "Kiss the Go Goat" and this one, "Mary on a cross". Thus the 70:s feel of the song. And, this being one of the first songs by the band after Papa Nihil got ordained, receiving his first face paint and the legendary white eye in the "Dance Macabre" video (that I now hope you have perhaps have had the time to watch? 🙂) Your comment on the similar "feel" is spot on 🙂 as they are from the same time period. Now.. I won't go spoil the fun here, but you _should_ watch the live video from Tampa that others have mentioned. That should answer some of the questions you had about the lyrics.. I will promise you. Once you watch the end of the live version, the lyrics "We were speeding together down the dark avenues", "But through all the sorrow, we've been riding high", "And the truth of the matter is I never let you go, let you go" and "If you choose to run away with me, I will tickle you internally. And I see nothing wrong with that"' now will make more sense. Mind you.. this is only one of the intended meanings.. there are other interpretations. As always with Tobias. He is a mastermind when creating music. Songs that are catchy ear worms and lyrics with double or even triple meaning. The Tampa video will also show that there are multiple nameless ghuols singing backing vocals. At least 3 or 4 of them. Two of Ghoulettes (maybe all 3 on this song live).. and Swiss Ghoul :-) Oh well, back to the lore again, the response to the songs and message of the songs were not what The Clergy wanted, so the band lay dormant until they "reformed" (according to the lore) in Sweden in 2006. They "re-released" (again, according to the lore 🙂 ) these two songs on the "Seven inches of satanic panic" single in 2019, for their alleged 50'th anniversary. This is such fun, Lauren.. Keep diggin.. So much more of the Ghost catalog to listen to and enjoy. I'd recommend you turn back from the poppy stuff and move onwards to either "Call me little sunshine" or "Hunter's moon" from the "Impera" album. Until next one 🙂
Yes, it’s catchy, but at the same time this is completely forgettable, for me, Lauren. The production is always spot on and there is massive talent, from the brainchild, on full display, but every time I start to get it they just lose me. I guess oxymoronic is the best word I’ve come up with to describe them as I I hear it……and that’s not a bad thing, I think?!? Dammit, Ghost!
You just gotta see the live version with a crowd full of rockin' nuns!
They are not rocking nuns. They are the sisters of sin 😃
The spike is from the portion of the song that went viral on Tik Tok last year.

Speaking of lyrics not matching the tone of the song, 'Witch Image' is one of my favorites from them.
Love your honesty by far one of the best reactions

Exactly that! These lyrics are not referring to sex although that might be what one hear first. Tobias has a really fun way of playing with metaphors.
Great timing on the Tobias drop 😂

100% the live version in Miami. It’s brilliant
