Snape was a truly tragic character. He lost the only woman he ever loved to the man who bullied him - James Potter. Later, he became a double agent in order to protect Lily. After her death, when her son Harry eventually came to Hogwarts, Snape protected him in many unseen ways because of the love he still had for Lily, in spite of Harry's resemblance to James. In the end he came to care deeply for Harry, and gave his life to protect him, in hopes that Harry would be the one to finally destroy Voldemort.

I wouldn't define him as selfish since he also sacrificed himself and certainly a person who sacrifices himself cannot be defined as selfish but rather as a courageous person, even Harry eventually recognizes Snape's courage, calling him one of the bravest people he has known.

This explained everything and certified Snape as the best written char in the series for me (not my fav Char, Luna's still my fav, but he's up there). I don't know if you're aware of this, but when the movies started up, the 4th book was out. Rowling actually had to tell the actor (and only him) what would happen to Snape in the long run so he would know how to portray Snape accordingly. But yeah brilliant acting by Alan Rickman, RIP.

Who never read the books can't understand that Dumbledor knew stuff all along but he also hoped there would be a way for Harry to survive. And in the 4th book when Voldemort used Harrys blood to come back to life made Harry and him even more connected. They shared the same blood. So when Albus heard that he smiled. In the books he smiled. He realizied that Voldemort made a mistake and gave Harry an extra life by mistake. But it was essential for Harry to never know this. Thus Albus only told Severus one fact and he never told him that Harry wont die. It was essential for Harry to want to die to sacrifice himself for others as Lilly did. Without that I don't think he would defeat Voldemort.

I think most reactors realised that Snape sent the deer but failed to realise that Lily's Patronus was a doe and Snape's became a doe also because of his love for her.

Its painful to watch this people reacting to snape patronus without knowing the context. For those who want to know snape and lily have the same doe patronus snape patronus took the form of a doe because of his deep feelings to lily and even she was long gone snape patronus still take form as a doe.

I'm sorry but I'm seeing way too many Pro-Snape comments on here. Let's get something straight here, people. Yes, Snape loved Lily. Yes, he was bullied, but just because he loved Lily does not make him a good person. Pretty much every child experiences bullying of some kind growing up, and again, this does make him a good person. Snape is the one who called his only friend Lily Mudblood in anger. He willingly joined the Death Eaters, of which you don't join and then not participate in maiming, raping or killing innocent people. He took out his anger and frustration with James Potter on Harry, who never even met his father or knew of the rivalry between his father and Snape. He abused his authority as a teacher practically everyday Hogwarts was in session and despite being a grown man he acted like a petty child with Harry, insulting students(children) essentially any student not in Slytherin and the cherry on top is the one who told Voldemort about the existence of a prophecy which ultimately led to the death of Harry's Parents. I think people are seeing Alan Rick man and not Snape which is making him "likeable" in the movies. SNAPE IS NOT SOMEONE TO ADMIRE OR FEEL SADNESS FOR!

You're wrong he was a better and angry and made the wrong choices but he didn't deserve to die like that especially since he was protecting Harry.

A lot of people that get bullied end up shooting up schools or becoming serial killers so its not abnormal when someone comes around promising revenge on the “good people” that treated you badly that you join them.
With Lilly it was that classic kids not knowing how to control their emotions so when Lilly stands up for him it was a “what is a girl gonna fight your battles for you?” Kind of situation and Snape as a kid didn’t handle it well.
I recently read through the books and I don’t see any case of him abusing his position/power so maybe you can enlighten me on that one, but yeah he was a teacher that didn’t care for kids much so he wasn’t great to them but none of it was abusive but immature sure Snape was not written to be a perfect or even good person.
With Harry, even tho he hated his dad and took it out on him he still went out of his way and risked his own life constantly to save him and guide him that even Harry forgave him for it in the end. But also I think at least 50% of his frustration with Harry wasn’t cause of his dad but because he knew Harry had to be the one to save everyone and Harry didn’t try or apply himself in a lot of those situations (like occlumency).
But even tho Snape isn’t what we might consider a “good person” the reason people are crying, the reason I consider him and dumbledoor to be the best written characters to me, and the reason he redeems himself is because not only is he a spy risking his life every single day to protect the world but he kills his mentor and the only person he cares about above all others because he is asked to and knows that he is going to die from Voldemort for the elderwand and still willingly dies so that the world can be saved. Which is why Harry calls him the bravest man he ever knew and I agree. So it’s fine if you don’t like Snape or agree with his choices but to say no one should feel sorrow for him to me says that you don’t fully understand his character.
