- Today we dive into a band that I’ve heard of but have never listened to and that is GHOST name of the song MARY ON A CROSS.
I’ve heard some pretty dark things about this band so.... let’s see how this goes!

This was Ghost's tour. Mastodon opened up for them. And Ghost plays every genre. All they care about is that the song has killer melodies. Doom metal? Check. Killer melodies. Pop metal? Check. Killer memories. That one "death" metal sounding song? Check. Killer growl melodies. It's always about the melody.

Mummy Dust has some Death Metal influences. The Ghost's vocalist had an Death Metal band.
Someone said Ghost sounds like Abba meets sabbath, and that is pretty fucking accurate
And probably their two biggest influences.
And Candlemass that first album is very Candlemass esque

I love the confusion people get for not expecting That from Ghost. They do satanic things but its a stage production and honestly done tastefully. But then we get Lyrics like "Tickle you Internally, and I see nothing wrong with that." its meant to disarm you with the ridiculousness to show you its not serious. They Experiment with so much and they sound amazing. The First two albums lean heavily into that satanic theme but the last three while having its moments does pull back and does the experimenting outwards.
I think that Tobias gets pretty tired of his christian fans asking him all the time why his lyrics are so satanic and Tobias has to answer that he doesn`t want to offend anyone or something and all of that is just a gimmick and no one should take it seriously, that`s why he tends to write softer lyrics that are more Halloweenish than satanic :D Anyways, Ghost music is doooope!
Since you liked this one, you may like Square Hammer or Dance Macabre. Though personally I'd also recommend Kaisarion or maybe Griftwood.

According to Ghost lore, this song was first sang at the Whiskey A Go Go in the 60's by the current singer's father (hence "this is a song my Papa used to sing").

Ghost in general is a whole vibe. Glad you enjoyed the song, it was cool watching your reaction. Ghost is very tongue in cheek. I would recommend Dance Macabre, Griftwood, Square Hammer, Rats and Call Me Little Sunshine. All Ghost songs have some sort of hook and imo these are all irresistible ear worms.
Welcome to the club, haha. Hope you'll explore more. And yes, that audience was most definitely there for them. They've exploded the last few years in particular, and I can't wait to see them again.

Oddly enough, Mary on a Cross is just one of two singles they released simultaneously that don't belong to any of their core albums, although it came shortly after their 4th.
Regarding their "satanism", yeah, its something that keeps a lot of people away. And you'll run into a lot of people who insist its just a gimmick. I feel like its actually somewhere in the middle though. Modern day satanism is really just atheists making a political point about separation of church & state and all that. It also deals a lot with pointing out the corruption and hypocrisies that can be found within organized religion and its leaders.
On that last part in particular, Ghost is not afraid of directing very pointed criticism at religion. Their last album in particular covers an array of topics relating to priests with choir boys, religious fanatics tearing down societies and people they label as heathens, and very specific politicians who use religion and its followers for their own selfish gain.
So no, Ghost is not literally endorsing Satan, so in that regard, it's a gimmick. But it is a gimmick with a purpose still.
WELCOME TO THE GHOST TRAIN! I first found out about them back in circa 2016 and really dug a few of their songs, but only in the last year did I finally take the plunge into their discography. I am so glad I did, because this band is AMAZING! I hope you check out more of their stuff. I see a couple more recent videos in my recommendations as I type this, so you obviously have already, but I hope you keep digging.
Also, if no one has said so, I recommend checking out the lore of the band. That's actually why this particular song sounds so much like a throwback to old school rock and roll.
Good reaction!! Ghost is one of my fave bands! I have seen them live 3 times and once in their home country of Sweden and yes, they have a huge fan base. Rats, Square Hammer, Faith, or from their last album, Call Me Little Sunshine, Watchers in the Sky and Hunters Moon…All good songs to check out!

Me too. Every time. It's so beautiful. I think this is the perfect Ghost lineup. I hope they all stay in the band, especially Swiss who sings like a soaring angel. Honestly, they are perfect, the song is perfect, the musicians are perfect, everything is perfection and Tobias is one talented genius.

Okay so if you love this vibe I would definitely suggest checking out Spillways, but if you wanna hear some of their more I guess I could say more traditional rock, because well Ghost is a sound all of their own that they make, I would suggest Mummy Dust, Rats, Year Zero, and Call Me Little Sunshine. And just some info, if you do listen to more Ghost each album is different. Because the leader singer, Tobias, plays these zombie priests who lead the band whose mission is to convert the masses via music to Satan. These priests get killed off after their album and tour is completed and a "new" lead singer is introduced. Right now we're waiting for the current lead singer to be killed off before the new Papa (they're called papa basically making fun of the church saying father) is brought out. And when he's brought out the band will change their look, the nameless ghouls is what the rest of the band are called btw, so the masks will change as well.
I would not say zombie priests. He, Tobias, is pretending to be this satanic Pope, who wants to take over the world with his dark music. And if he's not doing his job well, he's replaced by another one. The reason we call them Papa is because the real Pope is called that too. A lot of the Ghost gimmick is taken from the Catholic church. But used in a different way off course. Like the Ghost logo with the upside down cross. And all the costumes he's wearing. The dresses are based on the regalia the pope sometimes wears. Or the cassock Copia was usually wearing. That similar costume is often worn by real Cardinals. The whole Ghost thing is actually a prank on the Catholic church. And all that's going with it.

Consider reacting to their newest album! it's their most technical of all the albums, and my personal favorite because of all the growth they've had in their sound. The masks have a lot to do with the lore of the band, and the entire idea of the masks was that the creator of the band had to "become someone else" because he thought he wouldn't be able to become a star because of his background, and that's how the mask thing started with the live performers.
Old school metal meets swedish pop makes quite a good hybrid genre, never really thought of it! Lovin ghost!!!

He can also do more heavy vocals!! The live version of mummy dust is a really good example, its one of their heaviest songs,, or the 'live from the ministry' version of spillways has some moments while still staying lighter sounding like this song

Ghost is incredible like I said they're religious satire you got to listen to all the words you really got to look at some of videos that show them talking about like just different stuff when they're I can't explain it not when they're doing music but can't explain it you just got to follow the storyline that's all I can say along with the music videos and then you understand it more ghost is incredible I am hooked so hooked I'm 52 years old and I am hooked on this band I was supposed to see them with my son but unfortunately my son was murdered back in Sept. before we had a chance to go see them it's been hard I miss him so much his name was Joshua Barnes and ghost was one of us and if you really like his favorite song was square Hammer so check them out so I'm going to have to go by myself and watch it for both of us or he'll see it from above . I didn't want tô go alone considering cim 51. But I'm going to go when I can afford it and when the come closer to Norfolk. VA
