There's a pretty big "lore" in Ghost: There's this ancient satanic cult called "The Ministry", which wanted to spread the word of Satan in the most effective way available. In the late 60's/early 70's, since Rock music was on a global hype, they decided to spread the word that way, founding a rock band called Ghost. The lead singer would always have the title of "Papa" (which means pope). The first one was called Papa Nihil (the one we see earning the face paint and the white eye in 'Dance Macabre' video). Following the downfall of Rock, Ghost went in the shadows and was never seen again... until 2010, when the band suddenly reappears, now with a new lead singer: Papa Emeritus I (eldest son of Papa Nihil) releasing the first album (Opus Eponymous). After that, each album has a new frontman. That being said, we had Papa Emeritus II (younger brother of the previous one) in 'Infestissuman' (2013), Papa Emeritus III (youngest of the brothers) in 'Meliora' (2015) and then all 3 were mysteriously murdered, leaving the frontman spot open, but no more Nihil sons to fill in. Because of that, they were forced to, for the first time, use someone out of the bloodline, and, as so, he couldn't be called "papa". So we had Cardinal Copia for the 4th album ('Prequelle', 2018). Papa Nihil dies onstage and now, with the old leader dead, Sister Imperator (the woman we see initiating Nihil in 'Dance Macabre') promoted Cardinal Copia to papa, officially named Papa Emeritus IV and he was the frontman for the 5th and current album, "Impera', from 2022.
The music video for the song 'Kiss The Go Goat' (supposedly a song from the old days when the band was formed in the 60's) reveals us some details that fill some holes in the plot. Back then, Nihil and Imperator were lovers, but as he was becoming a rockstar, he was getting too much attention from his female fans and for that reason they broke up. Sister Imperator was pregnant at that time, but never told him. Now, in current days, she was actually the one who ordered all Nihil's sons to be killed, so she could point someone new to the role and that someone was Cardinal Copia, her and Nihil's bastard son. That way she got her revenge and at the same time could put his bastard son in his place of right, as papa and leader of the band.
Obviously, all that is just fiction and was being told and revealed to us slowly through the years by the band in all sorts of media (specially short lore videos they release on the band's RUclips channel). The lead singer behind the mask (all of the masks), songwriter and creator of it all is Tobias Forge.
Albums are always conceptual too. The first 3 were 3 parts of a same story. 'Opus Eponymous' is about the annunciation of the Antichrist coming to Earth. 'Infestissuman' is about his birth and first contact with mankind. 'Meliora' is about the relationship between him and men growing stronger and stronger, to the point we reach the absolute absence of God.
The next 2 had a new concept of their own. 'Prequelle' compared faith and blind beliefs to a plague, fast spreading and dangerous (having the Black Plague as the conceptual background). And finally, 'Impera' is about the mankind's fetish for power and how frail it is. It takes empires as an example, since every single one of them throughout history has risen and then fallen. Never failed and will never fail, so also modern empires, no matter how much they seem to be unbreakable, will eventually fall. It's just a matter of time.
Well... that's only the tip. The iceberg is way bigger. And I can tell by your reactions that you will dive in naturally. You've been ghosted :P
as a new ghost fan trying to catch up on the lore.. thank you for this.
much appreciated
this is the best short version of the lore ive ever found
Such a good job 😃 some people either give too much info for new people or make it too simplistic in an attempt to make it less boring, i think this was a great balance 👌🏼
WE CAUGHT ANOTHER ONE! EVERYONE! Another addict!
Always room for one more in the ghost family 😁
🤣 NEMA!
A NEW GHESTIE
Welcome to the cult - CLUB! I said club!
so the funny thing is, the frontman (Tobias Forge) USED to make the kind of music you were expecting from Ghost. He was the vocalist of a death metal band called Repugnant.
There are a few Ghost songs where you can hear him growl, though. "Mummy Dust", "From The Pinnacle To The Pit", and "Twenties."
Tobias is a "Satanist" from the pov of the metal community, because he's luring metalheads into the world of pop, and outsiders into a "false" church of metal.
Don't be put off by the aesthetics, they are not actually Satanic as in devil worshippers, Tobias is pretty agnostic and uses occult themes to make philosophical and social critiques, and uses the pop culture devil as a counter culture figure!
They fit pretty well with the ideology of the Satanic Temple, which is also not a devil worshipping organization.
Best band last 20 years.....brought back 70s rock!
It makes me so happy that more people are enjoying their music!!
Darkness at the Heart of my Love and Respite on the Spitefields are SO good! Def recommend alongside the others people have mentioned here :))
Respite on the Spitalfields is such a masterpiece.
My guy. Those are my
Favorite tracks off of Impera. Darkness has a unique vibe I don’t get enough from that album like I do
Most ghost albums. And respite is basically the greatest song I’ve ever heard from
Ghost.
Seeing you instantly vibe when the song starts hitting is so satisfying. Square Hammer is just THAT SONG and YES!!!!!! Glad you're enjoying. I'm a new fan as well and seeing the these immediate reactions to hearing such good music is fun
If you’re trying to stay on the Ghost vibe train your next stop is Dance Macabre ..trust me
For the record, Ghost frontman Tobias Forge is often seen sporting an Iron Maiden tshirt. He’s a huge fan and based a lot of his sounds around old school metal
Square and hammer masonic symbolism in plain sight. Love Ghost! Great reaction, bro.
Rats, Ritual or Year Zero, next 🤞
Year Zero will definitely trip you out. 😂
HEYYY I JUST SAW UR REACTION TO MARY ON A CROSS BOUT TO SEE UR REACTION TOO SQUARE HAMMER BUT CAN U PLEASE REACT TO LIFE ETERNAL ITS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SLOW SONG
It's always funny to me how people come to the "defense" of the band saying they are not really satanic. So what if they were? Literally no worse than following any religion.
Friend you have to listen to Life Eternal, it's one of his best songs, I think and you might like
Your the man! Love how you got into Ghost just like me. This band is killing it. Like a mix of Scorpions, Alice Cooper and Kiss. Best band of this century. Period. Greetings from Germany Dude.
Beste Band 🫶. Bin ich voll bei dir. Bei uns läuft Zuhause Ghost rauf und runter. Wir lieben diese Band und hoffen, dass sie in Deutschland auch noch deutlich mehr Support bekommen.
I see that your gonna listen to rats next I can already tell ur gonna love that one I also thing your gonna like spillways cirice and if you wanna hear one of their heaviest song it’s called mummy dust
We need to take a shot Everytime he says vibe
I would happily be drunk :)
The square hammer and being on the square is a reference to the Freemasons.
linda camisa aimgo
gracias por tu contenido,
Your wholesome and relatable vibe is really appreciated!
This was the song that got me into this band
Josh: "I'm not ready" (to swear before the devil)
Me: *mutters* "You will be..."
Oh nice! I didn't see you did this one, glad you're continuing to enjoy the ride. I know you say in this video that you're not ready to swear right here right now yet, but keep it up and you soon will be, haha
Anyway, copying and pasting my recommended list I put in the comments on the Mary On The Cross video.
Other songs to check since you liked this one so much that will have similar feels:
Dance Macabre (4th album)
Spillways (5th album)
But some other killer tracks that get into much different style of sound:
Year Zero (2nd album)
Cirice (grammy winner, 3rd album)
He Is (also 3rd album)
Stand By Him (1st album, 1st song they wrote too (but not the first track on the album))
You mention Rats is next. I think you'll like that too, of course. Lyrically, there's a lot of different layers packed into it. But of the three that you'll have listened to, that's probably the one that packs the most punch so far when it comes to unveiling actual critiques against Christianity, and using their Satanic gimmick for more of a purpose. If you'd like to hear another one along those lines I'd recommend Kaisarion (5th album.) And if you want something that's actually heavy with a clear political slant, go for Twenties (also 5th album)
Also, awesome shirt! I want that, lol
Oh you kept going down the rabbit hole welcome to Ghost. They purposefully make their songs catchy AF, for the Lore and just because it sounds awesome. There is a lot of old school Vibes to them, I would say there latest album Impera has the most with Spillways and Watcher in the Sky being the most 80's sounding thing that came out this year. I can't wait for Rats as its probably my second favorite song, first being Dance Macabre. I first saw them live and that song changed me.
Oooh you're gonna love Rats.
Love the tee btw !
Im loving the shirt bro. Im a 50 year old metal head. Ive seen Iron Maiden 4 times starting in the late 80s With the 7th son of the 7th son
you should give spillways a listen.
Hey there just subbed you :). Cheers from Sweden. Well if you liked this one id suggest "He is", "Bible", "Ritual" and either "Cirice" or "Dance Macabre " ;)
you should try to listen to spillways, from ghost too
🤘🏻
Please continue the Ghost road! 👻 I'll ne there! BTW , I subscribe for more Ghost 🤟 TX from Québec Canada 🇲🇶🇨🇦
Please please please react to spillways🙏🏻🙏🏻💖
Square Hammer 🫶❤️🔥
You should react to Dance Macabre and Twenties! I think you'd like them very much :)
The ominous vibe is satan . Hail
The Satanism in Ghost is played for laughs - basically directed at the people who think all metal music is 'devil worshipper' music - they just leaned into that and made it all about it. Tobias is quite critical of Christianity and its oppression, but he doesn't actually believe in or worship the devil. That's just theatre for the songs.
It's great stuff though, recommend 'Spillways', 'Kaiserion' or 'Griftwood' if you like the 80s sound, 'He Is' or 'Dance Macabre' if you want to see what I mean about the Satanism as parody, 'Cirice' or 'Respite on the Spitalfields' if you want just a generally amazing song, and.. maybe.. if you're up for it - check out 'Year Zero' one day. They REALLY lean into the Satanism there, but it's a badass song
I like the music but the devil worship is frankly bummer. I don’t care for it and as much as I like the music I find it a buzz kill to enjoy a well made melody just to have Tobias crank out some ode to a rehashed over and over and over character. I understand that Tobias has great plans for his band. I am afraid that if he keeps harping on the same shit it’s eventually going to get old and stale. I think it’s time for Ghost to pivot and abandon this old and worn out Shtick. It’s gimmicky and shallow. A Satanic rock band is so cliche. I am sure that Tobias is so talented that he could find other sources for inspiration. I love their melodies but I cringe every time they go there.
Don’t they have other things to talk about?
@@te2540 Their last two albums were literally about different things than satanism. Abandoning everything the band is about would be dumb. Your suggestion is stupid.
I always looked at this as are you going to be square with me; are you going to level with me? The reference to swearing before the devil, if you look at it this way, if God is all-forgiving, then there's nothing to be afraid of concerning being square and on the level. The devil, though...
I think they r talking about the free massons
Ghost are the bastard child of KISS and Blue Oyster Cult if he had been raised by King Diamond.
dude try out its a sin from ghost or zenith
watch the live version of mary on a cross
You know how you see bad people pretending to be good and nice all the time?
Ghost is the polar opposite of that. They’re basically good guy pretending to be the devil.
This is peak sarcasm…
It's about the Masons little brother
I would love for you to listen to mummy dust or year zero
You should make a Absolution song react!!!
Tobias is a pretty big Mason. The entire band is basically formed around the ideas and precepts of "black lodge" (Luciferian) Masonry. The "G" symbol is not just short for "Ghost." It's also representative of the pseudo-mysterious "G" in Masonry (G representing the all-important # 7, the generative principle, gnosis, etc.) . I bring all of that up because this particular song is making no bones about it - the square and compass are simply replaced with the "square and hammer", and the very theme of the movie they're watching is about mastering alchemical power - "powers clandestine" (an essential teaching at the highest levels of Masonry and other occult schools). "Are you on the level?" is also a well-known question Masons sometimes ask to see if someone is a fellow traveler (fellow Mason). This is one of Ghost's many "initiation ritual" type of songs.
You are SPOT ON! Thank you for posting the info about Free Masons. Most people (probably 99% of Ghost fans) have no clue that these are the people who have ruled the world for centuries and infiltrated every facet of government and society. The ones that are totally evil are 33 degree and above. They sacrifice children to molach or baal. It's sick and evil.
You probably know about what they do to children while sacrificing them and how they drink their adrenilized blood known as: Adrenocrhome, which they believe is the fountain
of youth. Pedowood celebrities as Tom Hanks, Oprah, Ellen and many others have been doing this for years. Keanu Reeves and Mel Gibson have been exposing them for
a long time, which is why both are not liked by Pedowood anymore.
I'm not saying Tobias is part of this or any of his band members, but it's dangerous to put out this type of lyrics knowing that kids think this stuff is cool and want to emulate it.
Parents who take their kids to these concerts are really ignorant to what the lyrics mean, the symbolism as throwing up the horns sign represents and just how evil satanists
truly are.
As a fan of great music and someone who loves classic rock and lived through the 80's music, Ghost's musical talent et al is excellent. I wish they did''t use this satanic bs
in their songs. There is NOTHING cool about satan! He is a demon and causes all death, destructions and suffering in this world. I'm not saying they can't question
organized religion. As someone who was raised in the church, I question many things but don't sell my soul to lucifer to do so.
5:49 a cardinal?? Lore??!?
Listen to
MONSTRANCE CLOCK.
REACT TO IT
Ghost as a band uses a lot of satanic imagery and lyrics, but the members are not satanists. You may want to avoid the older albums as the farther back you go in their discography, the more overtly satanic it gets. Rats, though, I think you will enjoy.
Brooo plis plis my english is very very bad but reaction to kiss the go goat- ghost... plis bro
You need to watch their video shorts, chapters 1 through 14, they're hilarious.
I think it would be funny if you watch the year zero music video and the song is a jammer , let’s add twenties to the list
Please listen life eternal kiss to thw goat and monstrance clock
If you haven’t already try twenties!
It's about Freemasons. He uses their factual words and rituals in this song. Out of context of course. So it seems like they are devil worshippers. But who knows? Maybe they are?
The title Mary on the cross didn't give satanic vibes?
Every single song from Ghost
Is Satanism..from all angles.
Go back to very 1st album, 1st song, 1st verse, 1st WORD he sung.
LUCIFERRRRRRRR.....WE ARE HERE!
You are being enticed by the lyrics...subliminally.
YOU.
The song has Masonic theme
I love when people mistake Tobias for a Satanist 😂
By now you probably learned that the whole satanic theme is a satire, a mockery of the Catholic church. They don't worship the devil, LOL
Ghost is horrible sorry not sorry 😂
I feel like I've been ripped off in life that I didn't find this band sooner. Heard Stay featuring Patrick Wilson the actor and not many know he's a viciously talented singer. Now I'm going to see them in Aug and I'm PSYCHED.
I dig the breakdown, but you missed the point. It's not satanic. It's the opposite. He's a villain in this song.
