- Forced to take shelter from storms in Mackay we take the opportunity to explore inland to Finch Hatton Gorge and hunt for duck billed platypus at Broken River. When paying for a marina berth we try to make the most of the facilities by doing all the jobs that require fresh water. With the bad weather continuing we decide to head back out anyway.
We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat.

Florence used to belong to my Grandfather. We spent many happy nights on Florence going up the mast and pretending to steer her.
Thank you for taking her on so many amazing adventures, it makes my Grandmother very happy to see her sailing the world! I'm sure it would make my Grandpa happy too xx

In 42 years I've seen 2 platypuses and 2 Koalas in the wild. The platypuses were probably the same ones in this video.

Wow sounds like we were lucky then, we found them after half a day and still felt very lucky to see them.
I have finally caught up! After finding your RUclips channel about a week or so ago, I've been binge watching every video you've posted. I must say, you both have produced a show as good or even better than most of what's on the Travel Channel, Discovery Channel or even BBC. I used to think that show by the Canadian couple (D.S.) was great. I prefer your videos hands down! Well done!
I love the way you edit your videos, explain things so well and even match the music to the situation. That care has not gone unnoticed. I love the way you're both very calm, proper and don't use profanity... a big pet peeve of mine. You seem to really be humble and appreciate that you have the opportunity to fulfill your dream.
You seem to be a great match for each other as well... in both skills and temperament. Spending that much time together can put a strain on even the best relationships. Lad, you're lucky to have found a woman who works so hard and still remains ever the Lady.
I'm an old geezer or I'd at least be sailing cheap boat around the Caribbean.

Matt, you and I have one thing in common. We both spend our time with women that have a quick smile and a happy disposition. Add a sailboat and that is probably as good as life gets.
Remember guys, when running before the wind, more sail is better and safer to minimise the shock loading on the rig, sails and rudder, whereas when sailing into the wind, less sail is easier on the boat and crew!
I’ve swum in Finch Hayton gorge before and I can vouch for the fact, that even in Summer, it is FREEZING!!! (I bet the care heater would’ve come in handy afterwards! ;-)
You’re incredibly fortunate to be able to see Platypus in their natural habitat and are well ahead of me. I’ve only ever seen them in captivity! :-(

Come to Queensland and take a trip to Eungella, they will be waiting for you. They're likely to out around 4pm, look for the bubbles and set your camera to sports mode.

So many earthly heavens...awesome! ...and the shipping in pictures gives reality to the areas importance. So much to see, to do, you’ll have to just travel around a second time to see it all, nothing ever being the same...

Mackay is a great place I used to live there about 10 years ago
This video came up as I sit here anchored at Brampton Island sheltering from 25 knot winds. Just like you I also just spent a couple of days at Mackay marina and was equally trepidatious at leaving its shelter. You captured it all beautifully.

In 1985 my Grandmother and Aunt visited from the UK,, The area was in a drought,, Broken River was just a few water holes ,,,, Hahaha , got drunk on Brampton in 1964 ,, I was 16 1/2 ,,, :-)
You were very lucky to see the Platypus, I've lived here all of my 70 years and never seen one in the wild. Well done.

I had the opportunity to travel to NZ and Australia with my son 4 years ago! We were in Cairns for a bit and I remember seeing roads signs for Mackay to the south Queensland was beautiful! Looks like you had a great visit!

Thanks for another great video. Nice to see Queensland in such a positive light. Mackay marina is very good. Great facilities as well as restaurants and bars right there. We spent some time in there storm sheltering and getting engine services done. It feels safe with the cyclone rated berths and the tall piles. We entered the swing basin with a dead engine and were "rescued" in there by the volunteer service. It was too rough for them outside.

Hi guys, so glad you got to see those cute little platypus. As you've recognised, they are a very rare sight, and not many Australians have even had the opportunity to see one in the wild. So glad you're loving Australia. :-)
If you get up near Cairns, great swimming holes are Cascades and Douglas Falls. When it's too hot to swim anywhere, they're nice and cool.

They have small washing machines on Amazon that use one gallon of fresh water per load, and have a spin cycle that gets clothes almost dry, for about a hundred dollars USD. I have one for when I travel, it works better than the set I have at home. It'll work with water from the tap, or a river. With biodegradable soap, can be used anywhere, and they use very little electric

Just though I would say "hi" after discovering your channel and watch over the last week (mostly in order) you back catalogue.
Please keep doing what you do. I really, really enjoy the "down to earth," "basic" sailing you do. I really love your approach to "keep sailing" and don't use "Marinas."
I did a little dingy sailing back when I was a youngster (which is a long, long time ago :); just enough to think I would really like to sail - Clair Frances "Come Hell or High Water" as the book for me. I made other choices, so I never got into sailing personally. As I enjoyed those opportunities, I wouldn't want anyone to think that not sailing was a regret of mine; just something I could see myself doing.
I asked a sailing acquaintance of mine, a few years ago, if starting sailing in you 50s was possible and he said not. I think he is right. One has to be really, really dedicated to take up something like sailing when you're getting older; and I'm not convinced that I have the "right stuff" to start now. But I can enjoy people like you going for it, and live my "dreams" though you. So thank you, very, very much for the content you produce.
To that end, do you have a PayPall account so I can make a one off contribution. It won't me much, £10 probably, but I would like to make a small contribution. My situation ATM is such that a regular contribution is something I shy way from.
Also, may I suggest some "how to" videos for complete newbies like me. I know nothing about blue seas sailing, so anything that shows me the basics would greatly enhance my enjoyment of your content. I know I have so much to learn, and while I may never put into practice what you may choose teach into practice, it will help me appreciate all the more your videos.

You can start sailing in your 50's. We have a friend who we have been cruising with recently who bought his boat (an island packet 44) and learned to sail in his 50's, he is now very competent and has sailed from the US East coast to Australia so far. You are correct though you have to know it is definitely what you want to do, maybe try a few sailing holidays or courses to find out. Dinghy sailing is a great base to start from, we are both dinghy sailors. I have lived in Australia for 70 years and never seen a Platypus in the wild despite spending much of my life in the bush
Excellent video guys. Here in North America we don’t have many of the wildlife you share with us in your videos. It always makes me wonder if the theory of evolution is right. Australia has animals we don’t find naturally anywhere else in the world. I wonder why that is?

Good observation there. They have found some relationship between our wildlife and those in the islands to our north and also South America. They have a kind of tree kangaroo in PNG, but it has a distinctive look that is different from our usual kangaroo. Have to point out, we lived here 40 years before seeing a platypus in the wild.
Im only part way into this episode and I saw you washi g the topsides from a kayak. I just was on the hard and couldnt afford any more time after 4 days with in and out.
My question is, if topsides can be washed on the water can it be taped, sanded, gelcoat repaired and painted from a kayak or paddleboard. Or would it be better to sabe and go back on the hard? Whats your experience? What do you suggest?

In case you come across more creeks as you travel north and want to see the platypus, a few drops of fish oil in the water will bring them out!
Cold river pools are the best! In the cities now they pay for "Cryotherapy." Freezing your skin to alleviate inflammation. I always found a swim in a cold river served just fine.
Do you get motion sickness? Or, do you get used to the constant motion after a while?
Hi Todd, We get used to it but after a long period of calms it can take a couple of days for our bodies to get back into the swing of things. We have both been sick in very rough weather but not very often. Thankfully the human mind is very good at forgetting the bad bits and remembering the good bits! M&A
A strange thing I notice is that after 3 days I find every thing seems to settle down and feels very stable, then get shocked to look out the porthole and see the big waves out there.

Hey, I was wondering: how do you keep the fresh water tank clean?
It has big hatches so we can get our arms in there and scrub it out every 6 months. Also use a filter when filling it up from the tap.
Florence may be only 11 mtrs , but I bet she's considerably more nimble than those big bullies. Who knew

It's a decathlon kayak. Its only supposed to be for one but we squeese 2 of us in. It was gifted to us from a friend who had used it a lot for a year or so herself. It's been great for us.
“Eungella” no in mackay I’ve lived here my whole life and we pronounce it with slang young-galla but in one go... and since then to people who don’t live here all the grass has died and I’m in glenella and it hasn’t rained since 2 days before Anzac Day was the last decent pour and since then it’s sprinkled once and that’s it the dumb thing is we’re one of the wettest parts of the country

What's the price list for service at a marina or yacht club?
20 meter berth is about $70aud a night so maybe a bit less for a smaller berth
It varies a lot Mathew. From $34 to ridiculous amounts depending on the size of your boat and the marina. Probably not much different to a caravan/trailer park. Of course Mackay marina is very good, and does special bulk deals where you can book a number of weeks and spread the time over a cruising season, so it can work out to be very cheap. Their prices are reasonable and the marina is cyclone rated. The difference in price between long term and casual is big e.g., 1 night $60, or 1 month $30 a night. Some marinas that charge very high prices, have 5 star facilities such as private marble bathrooms with carpets, tv and furniture. But, some marinas charge high prices and have low rent facilities. Did I mention how good Mackay marina is!

I'm sorry to say that I won't be watching anymore. You are both quite handsome, like all RUclipsrs it seems, and I am just too lonely and sad about my single solitary life to spend it watching gorgeous young folks frolic in bikinis. It just hurts. I feel so utterly inadequate compared to you both who are doing everything and are so fucking happy and pretty. I know I have mental problems. I have depression, anxiety, PTSD, Toxic Shame, Shame-Existence Bind, Bipolar and probably a few more. You both seem so perfect and whole. Later.
Just a quick tip you were saying that the beaver is gone right about the time you get them in Focus their out little tip take a couple pictures in autofocus first that way you guarantee you have the photo then go to manual and do whatever settings you would like afterwards but make sure you get the photo you want first on an auto focus setting
It's not a beaver. It's a platypus. The trick is. Focus on the bubbles they make just before they surface, set your camera on sports mode so it will shoot continuously. When the platypus comes up press the shutter and keep going until it dives. The don't stay up for long.
