This was due, not only to the extreme hardness of its route, but to the tyranny exercised by the brutal Bernard Hinot, who, giving an display of power, tense the race from beginning to end turning it into a real hell for his rivals. A dominance and push rarely seen in one-day races. It took people to such an extreme that the Spaniard Juan Fernández, who won the bronze medal, declared that it was the toughest race of his life. Only 15 runners finished out of the 107 who started the race.
We all remember tough Cycling World Championships, but none as brutal as death race. It was an August 31, 1980 the date chosen for the test of Sallanches (France). The race consisted of a circuit that riders should give 20 laps, with a small ascent to the Cot de Domanci, of 2.7 km at 8.6% average slope. That means 6000 meters of positive slope, comparable to a very high mountain stage with mountains such as Tourmalet, Aspen and some more. Crazy.
