Hearing that became a bit of drinking game for some fans. Pity, by many standards he had a great career. These were the most memorable World Champs there are have been. The last km drama, and then Big Mig showing he truly was a biggest of guys with that proud fist pump over the finish line. Stuff like that is why cycling has legends others sports can't touch.
You should listen to the Spanish commentary of it, surprised they never had an aneurysm with the level of excitement. Agree with you 100% on it being the greatest ever Worlds!
The facts are as you say, but that alleged hatred of the Spaniards towards Olano is not true. I remember that race as if it had happened yesterday. We all celebrated the double in Spain understanding perfectly well that cycling is a team sport and praising Miguel's class as a sportstman and as a person.
Gianetti and Puttini came from the very same region of Swiss, which is Ticino (the Swiss Italian part), the region where I live. As for Gianetti it was quite normal to see him as protagonist in this WC (he had a great season) but Felice Puttini was a real surprise, usually a gregario, but in Duitama his endurace qualities helped him. I have to add he was/is a very genuine and funny guy.
Olano looks soft and fat compared to today's GC contenders? I remember Olano he looked a little like Big Mig so naturally people expected him to be Miguel's successor. Unfair expectations.

For me this was best World championships ever. Great track with Cogollo climb. Bad weather. Best climbers of the 90s. Drugs. Epoc finale.
