- Before War Thunder began, there was Wings of Prey, or Birds of Prey if you were on Console. Today I load up this 15 year old game to take us all back to where it began, where War Thunder was originally spawned from... Enjoy the nostaligia!

Early War Thunder had no added haze or smoke effect. It was high contrast, clear vision you could see for days.
Yeah it's weird it's like the textures got reduced between games.
Back in 2013 you could see the whole enemy team from your spawn with ultra low graphics, also could see through clouds.
It is actually pretty awful, style-wise. The contrast was WAY too high, and the tint was often hideous. Too much blue and green tint, and shadows that were pitch black with the sun high in the air. But hey, pros and cons!
@@TemenosL old war thunder (2013-2014) can run in a gt 610 w/ i3 3100.
@@TemenosL back then you could also see enemies before they were in shooting range, now its a tossup if they render at all

I remember back when I started war thunder in 2016 the flak used to be more prominent(visible) and emersive , I want that feeling back
THATS exactly what Flak used to look like , 10 minutes into a propeler match the sky would start being spammed with dark clouds from flak

played war thunder way back in 2014 when it was BARELY out of closed beta! never knew this hidden gem existed! i swear ANCIENT war thunder had that flak before it got the effects outright replaced by LASER CANNONS that never miss
WT used to be so amazing back then, as flying bombers was possible and not just a giant minus credit wise.

@@TehButterflyEffect I play it since closed beta in 2013, lost my accounts 3 times because of moving to different countries and Gaijin being so friendly and just banning me and years of progress.
Worst part is I played birds of prey but never connected the two but I also miss bombers being affordable to run n airbattles not draining me for every penny
@@TehButterflyEffect Incomparable dude. Now you have to get through literally 30 variants of the same plane to get a new one. In old WT it was maybe 3 variants per plane at most.
Bro I played the shit out of Il 2 Sturmovik and I had no idea that Gaijin made it until recently. Now I know why I got addicted to WT

This is a spinoff title. Il2 sturmovik is made by c1 games and it’s a way better game than war thunder. The newer great battles games that is.

I love that you can see the shell casings fall from the wings. This game is detailed AF
We had plenty of WW2 flight sims before that and shell casings were already standard. I remember some low poly P51 sim from the 90s doing it.
@@fonesrphunny7242 i didn’t have that luxury growing up. But now that I earned and worked my way up to having a system. Nice to see it all. New games worry more about micro transactions and everything else. I play war thunder religiously, just nice to see it in more detail. For how old it is it still as good as games today.

I was in college when this came out 18 years old. Loved it! I played every fight game made back then on Xbox. Including "Crimson Skies" - that was a good one! I was one of the first 100 players to join War Thunder while it was in Alpha.

"why does this game still lowkey look kind of good" funny you say that, games back then seems like they had better quality in passion compared to games today, when you look at games like battlefield 2042 compared to bad company 2 or battlefield 1, 2042 looks like a complete joke, warthunder still looks good. It's ridiculous, I miss when the gaming industry had more passion.
I put so many hours into Birds of Prey. Spent so long on the BoP forums. League tournaments (of which I won one: proudest moment). So much nostalgia. I love that theme music.

I'd definitely love to see more! Had the same experience u did a couple weeks ago. Played the game on ps3 growing up and when I fired it up a couple weeks ago, I struggled with the controls and asked myself how I used to play this 💀

Birds of Steel on the PS3 for me was my Wings of Prey. Absolutely loved that game, had every aircraft. 8 year old me still has a distinct memory of flying a H6K trying to do a torpedo run in a multiplayer lobby. I got hit by flak and a fuel fire started, I was amazed. A fire usually meant the aicraft was gone and it automatically made you bail out and zoom out. Yet here it was, I could still fly and watch my aircraft burning. I was completely stunned. Got my torps off before the tanks detonated. Unfortunately a decade old memory has been hazy so I have no idea what happened then. I don't even know what type of ship I was aiming for, I just have one grainy image of a burning H6K and a feeling of wonder.
The fact that i played this game on ps3 brings me back to my childhood. Thanks man. Now im gonna go boot it up and see if it still runs

Oh wow… kinda reminds me of a game I used to play. Back when my Father bought me the 360 for the first time he bought 4 games with it. Cars 2, Bolt, Some car game I forgot and Blazing Angels 2.
Blazing Angels 2 was what got me into fighter aircraft. I was so invested into the story I enjoyed it so much. Thanks Dad!
this game is my friggin childhood! picked up wings of prey on steam a few years ago but i noticed the narration isn't the same sadly. also this has one THE BEST soundtracks out of any game. period. by the same dude who did the ost for skyrim ;)
Man I loved this game so much growing up. This is what reallyyy got me into sim. I got back to it every now and then. Its a lot buggier than I remember lmao. The comment about the flak at the start was hilarious, warthunder flak is so messed up its sad,

For the nostalgia
I remember playing this game as a kid and it had the most detailed graphics I'd ever seen in a WW2 flight game. I was also horrible at it lol but I remember being so immersed in the Battle of Britain mission and how intense that was.
I played the demo of this game every day before it came out and then played the game to death. Honestly one of the best games of its type for the time.

Damn that main menu theme hit me right in the nostalgia. This was one of my favourite games on the xbox 360
I tried out singleplayer campaign in War Thunder, and what I found out is this:
Kaga was supposed to be in the game since the beginning, since in Midway, you take off from Ryujo, and every other carrier from Midway is in the game. (you can see them on the Guadalcanal map)
Except Kaga.
Ryujo has been used a few other times too in place of Kaga, and it just makes me so fucking furious, that Kaga is STILL not in War Thunder.

My first sim game I played was IL2 1946 and Mig alley which were if im not mistaken both on 2 DVDs. And it was mainly because my father is an extreme enthusiast into military planes so he was teaching me how to play these 2, I was about 13-14.

I played this game once at my cousins house before i was allowed to have a gaming console .. years later i got into war thunder and i thought hey.. this game looks alot like birds of prey so i did reseach and came to tye realisation it made me happy

I remember the opening to birds of prey, and it made me very hype for air combat. They had a great music director and I sometimes play it when I fly War Thunder or DCS.
The game that got me into WW2 aircraft was Heroes of the Pacific on the PS2. Never played Wings of Prey. I think I'll check it out
That's a proper throwback! I think that was the first plane game I played but I wouldn't call it realistic. As for wings of Prey, if you've played War Thunder you've played Wings of Prey 😂
That was my first flight sim too. It had a fantastic music score!
I remember playing arcade multiplayer battles and using the IL-2M in air-to-air because of how overpowered the plane and its rear gunner was. I regularly shot 5 or more fighters off my tail without dying
I think the one that I played first before War Thunder was Birds of Steel or something like that. It had the Gaijin intro and the iconic theme as well as a full-on tech tree. And the mouse aim circle thing for console.
Actual flight controls. Beautiful. The camera moving with your roll is sorely missed.

I played the hell out of this game back in the day. I was disappointed that war thunder didn't bring the online game mode where you attempted to land on the enemy runway to take their airbase.

I was one of the cool kids who had a Logitech Attack 3 joystick for this game. Thing didn't even have rudder twist but man did it make playing this game so much fun way back when.

This is a evoltion of the "Warbirdsii" online game from 2003, Very good for the time.
The reason all the flak is better and stuff, is because gaijin was only working on aircraft and aircraft, gaijin has to work on three separate things in war thunder, and their budget as a result in split between the four trees of each nation
Thats not an excuse for already existing assets to be replaced with worse ones

It runs perfectly on the steam deck maxed out and is alot of fun. I recently just finished the campaign on steam deck.

Oh, I'm wrong... that's right, I did play a bit of IL2 on PS3 as well. :0 I remember it controlled better than BoS because it actually allowed L2+R2 to be used with analogue input. A feature Gaijin never resurrected, frustratingly.
