If you think about it, Angel's name (or Spike, for that matter) pre-vampire could be construed as Billy. Liam is short for William, which uses Billy as a nickname.
01:03 - 01:24 The kid from the"Nightmares"episode of"Buffy"(1x10)was called Billy.
This episode's writer, Tim Minear, worked on this while the September 11 attacks occurred.
One quality in a person doesn’t rule out any other quality. They exist side by side, good and terrible.
Socrates said something along those lines, just a lot better than I could.
I loved that once Gunn knew he was under that spell he went with the plan of getting Fred to knock him out.
Ya, Gunn wasn't under it very long, and wesley didn't realize he was under it when it first started taking effect. Then there was seemingly some small time jump since a secne jumps to him asking her into his office? I'd probably have to watch the whole episode to be sure.
for the longest time I would never rewatch this episode whether it be by myself or reactions something about it just really got to me especially the wesley and fred stuff this episode just makes me feel like I need to have a long shower once it is over
I saw domi with alley in their videos
I love the msgs from the future it’s very timey wimey
This is so interesting because other reactors have in fact criticized this episode for the exact opposite. They thought it was somehow giving men TOO MUCH of a break which didn't sit well with me as a man to be honest.
I actually applaud them for taking such a big swing with this episode but I'm not sure if even they completly knew what point they were trying to make with it.
While all humans have the capacity for evil & respect is a learned behavior, bigotry (of all kinds) is also learned behavior. Whatever the writers intended, I've always wondered how much of the misogyny was passed from Billy to the men he manipulated with his touch rather than "awakening" the misogyny within. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
@@becca1189 maybe it was awakening some caveman-esque underdeveloped parts of their brain that just wants to hit things with a club. Who knows ?
While I don't have kids myself, I have two nieces that I've seen grew up and both had their own unique personalities from a very very young age. So in my opinion there are some character traits that we are born with that are not learned.
And this is not giving anybody a break. It's just the truth.
I don't blame Angel or Cordelia or even W&H so much as I blame The PTB for waiting to show the group this as a punishment. Punishments involving the death of innocents don't make The PTB's seen in a good light. The group could have fixed said mistake without anyone or too many people getting hurt if The PTB'showed Cordelia a vision earlier. The purposely allowed deaths for a lesson Angel didn't learn, if he was willing to do it again. The only person worse than The PTB's in this senario is Billy himself.
Question is, would they have figured it out otherwise? I guess if they showed cordy glimpses of billy, that might make it easier, but she didn't know who he was.
@@Heldemon Not giving the group said chance to try only kills off people who didn't need to die, in my opinion. And Cordy didn't need to know what Billy looked like to have the group figure it out. It played out that way in the series, also. That isn't something that would change either way even if the vision didn't show Billy. But dependng on what and when The PTB's showed, I see it more on said PTB than on anyone else (except Billy himself).
I actually quite like this episode. Not for the Billy making men evil stuff, other than enjoying watching Alexis show he can do creepy evil while chewing the scenery. I like if for how Fred beats Wes, for Cordy's speech and general Cordiness, and for Lila finally finding a line at WRH she shouldn't have crossed, and correcting her error - with gunfire. The mini-arcs the women have in this episode are great.
I disagree that the intended message is that all men are evil. There is a debate happening in this episode about whether men have evil in them or can be influenced to do evil even if they weren't evil to begin with. Fred clearly believes that the power was external and not something that was already inside Wesley. Angel has some weird beliefs about being a vampire making him "above" that sort of behavior. But there's no reason to think he's right.
And then again, as we learned in Angel's epiphany, all PEOPLE (not just men) have evil inside them, they all have the capacity for evil. That's why they're not angels.
I understand your interpretation of the episode Domi, but do we have to take Wolf, Ram & Hart's explanation that Billy brings out a primordial misogyny in men as fact? Another way to see it is that patriarchy and misogyny are demons that capture men and take them out of their natural selves. This is kind of consistent with Ken in the Barbie movie for example.
I believe it was Lilah's explanation that referred to it as inherent in men, but we should suspect her point of view, with how she's climbing the evil corporate ladder as a woman and has had to deal with those kinds of men who don't have the excuse of being infected by a twisted misogynist. Fred's interpretation is correct, it was done to Wes, it's not really within him, but because he was so consumed by it, it makes him rightfully question what kind of person he is. Not just because he was made to feel and think as if that was him, but because he has always been someone who doesn't believe in himself.
My head canon on this that made it acceptable to me is that Billy actually infected those he touched with the base misogyny that then took over the men. Whether or not they had any such feelings, I think Billy's claim to not hate women was a lie and he put his own hate into them.
The concept of a primal ghost lying dormant awaiting for a trigger is not unthinkable.
I'm a man and most of us are gentle but it takes a great deal of awareness and unlearning to be such.
@@abbesatty9498 Maybe for you it did. Every man is different.
@@maxpayne232 I'm talking generally based on the culture and history but if you want to take it personally, well, go for it!
@@abbesatty9498 sounds more like you made it personal first.
@@maxpayne232 How?
Well well well Domi is back😅
I think everyone, male or female, has some good and some bad in them - just in different ratios. However I choose to believe that most of us have such a small amount of bad that we rarely (if ever) are exposed to it. Too naive a viewpoint? Maybe
❤❤❤
You really don't remember a lot of what you watched, huh? XD
Hi domi ❤
I like the idea we all have a "darkness" inside we all fight against but I agree I don't like the way it skews to all men have a deep misogyny inside that hates women. I think that says more about how the men are viewed then the men themselves and I agree I don't like how that could be seen as an excuse for those actions. I didn't think about that the first time I saw this episode but definitely do not like that idea.
Wesley's guilt and his struggle to figure out what that says about him should have had a bigger part. Wesley's struggle is real because even if you can argue that it wasn't his fault it was still his action. I don't like the "all men have a deep seeded misogyny" but the question if you give into that what does it say about you is powerful.
I do really appreciate in a time when hating men is a feminist trope you don't just go with the see this is why all men are evil but see the layers and nuance that as much as the story is problematic makes it meaningful.
@@apou121 Unfortunately this view of "in order to be a good feminist as a man you have to believe that all men are deeply misogynistic inside" still hasn't died down, even after 20 years.
I wish the whole "speaking of saliva..." comment was explained
The season 3 finale of Buffy (Graduation Day Part 2) explains it. Wesley and Cordelia kissed and he drooled all over her, which made her realize she wants nothing romantic to do with him.

Kind of an unfortunate stretch of episodes, huh? First this, and then such an underwhelming Buffy episode next. ;)
A Joss Whedon project implying that all men hate women? Well, if that isn't projection I don't know what is.
DOMI - THANK YOU VERY MUCH for sticking up for us men. There are A LOT of man haters within the Buffy fandom (both male and female), especially in the gay community, who think that masculinity is the root of all human evil, instead of the source of female heterosexuality that it, in fact, is. I've heard Buffy fans, in reference to this episode, claim that the world would be a perfect paradise if men could just become feminine like women, or that men are simply "imperfect women," as if women have zero flaws. Your friend Alley herself, when she reviewed this episode, suggested, in her post-episode commentary, that masculinity is the source of all misogyny, instead of the source of all protection against it that it, in fact, is. I called her out and a female bigot within the comment section falsely accused me of being an incel, and absurdly suggested that the source of female heterosexuality are gender neutral traits like "kindness" and "niceness," which are things that will only produce a platonic friendship. The man hate is extremely strong within many noticeable aspects of this community, and I am SOO GLAD you, and a few other wonderful reactors like Jules Reacts, have rejected that toxic narrative! You have my appreciation and you are a genuinely great person!!!! Thank you again! Us men appreciate you!😊
Also, despite my genuine appreciation of you being hard on this episode, I think that the end was precisely a subversion of the hateful narrative that both you and I reject. Joss just loves subverting both sides of the political spectrum, and the climax scene where Angel proves that it's not all men was a huge slap to man haters everywhere. They didn't think that Joss would subvert THAT stereotype, but he did! Angel proves that Lilah was wrong and that misogyny is NOT inherent, thus rejecting an extremely hateful cliche that left a bad taste in both our mouths. So please, don't forget Angel proving that it's not all of us, thus redeeming this episode in a very climactic and "last minute" way, as Joss loves to do! 😊
Other Billy's??
Billy Wilder, Billy Bob Thornton, Billy Crudup, Billie Burke, Billie Busby, Billie Piper, Billy Batson, Billy Goat, or maybe Billie Eilish! Does Domi live in a small bubble maybe?😢
Oh on that subject of violence.... if you want a film to scare you to the core, watch The Accused (1988) with Kelly McGillis & Jodie Foster. But PLEASE- DO NOT watch alone! Watch with a trusted friend or family member during daylight hours. The film is based on a real event.
