I am very happy the continuous focus to ON setting has made all the difference for you. I had an early struggle with AF on my R3s, particulary with sports. Glad you love your R3 again, and I look forward to your inspiring sports photography videos.
Yay! That's brilliant news! I was surprised with the issues you were having as I had never had anyting similar, HOWEVER, I turned that setting off to test it and sure enough the focus would miss every now and than (I just did it testing in my garden, no nothing important). I can see why the setting is there, but maybe the description of it could be better, as us sports shooters most definitely want it on. Really good to see you smiling and loving the camera again 😀
I never post comments but I had to ! Ive had my R3 for 18 months now and I also brought the RF 70-200 2.8 at the same time. to start of with I was pleased with the upgrade from my Canon 5d mk4 but couldn't get the settings to work for me! just thought I had to get to know how to get the best out of the new camera with practice. stumbled across your post and thought I'd give it a go before the Goodwood Members meeting this weekend and wow what a transformation , tracing cars perfectly just like the Canon R3 promotional video! I up dated my kit to the new R3 just before going out to Italy for the 2022 Ferrari World Finals in Imola. I was happy with my pictures and the AF was much better than my Canon Mk4 but not brilliant! I really thought that I had made a mistake in spending so much on the R3 Ive not done the edit on my Goodwood Members Meeting pictures yet but I'm now more than pleased with how it preformed over the weekend!!! 1 11 days ago I am very happy the continuous focus to ON setting has made all the difference for you. That’s great news and so pleased that it has helped you out. I’ve just about got my R3 set up just the way I want it now after making that one little change, made all the difference! Would love to see some of your Goodwood images on the photography chat page.👍🏻
Hi Mark, So pleased you have got sorted with the AF on your R3 camera, it can be very frustrating when we can not fathom out certain things in the menu anyway glad to see you smiling again.
Glad you were able to solve the autofocus issue with your R3. It drives me nuts if I have a problem that I am unable sort out with my cameras. Cheers & safe travels.😊
Damn. I too have been underwhelmed by the R3's AF for sports, which didn't seem to find and keep focus as well as my R5, so this video caught my eye. I was disappointed to find that this setting was already 'On', so I'm still looking for answers 😞
I had the same experience a month or two in with the R3. You want it seeking as early as possible. Sitting in your office with an older short lens it will hunt nack and forth that way sometimes. In the real world with sports lenses it's not a problem. There will be other tweeks to conquer ....
I think you were confusing the option AF4 "Lens Drive when AF Impossible" with the option AF1 " Continuous AF". but both exist and they are not the same. By the sound of it, what you thought the former is doing is what the later is doing, which is basically AF hunting even when you release AFON. However that is not what Lens Drive when AF Impossible does, but rather it tells the camera that if after hunting for AF it fails, to try again and again for as long as you keep AFON. That is ON by default and that is what you want so if focus fails it tries again. However you should keep Continuous AF turned off, I have no idea whey you would enable that.
Brilliant Mark , You sounded the same as I did when I had issues with my 1Dmk4 (according to the guy at CPS) , which is so annoying when you pay all that money
Glad to see the smile is back, but.................... did you read the (downloadable) INSTRUCTIONS ??????? ..............when setting up the R3 ????? Ha Ha - NO???? neither did I !!!!! But I wish I did like a lot of others!!!! The "Quirky" menu can be a little confusing in a few places causing a couple of problems until you READ THE INSTRUCTIONS and do a "Full Reset" and start again!!! Like I Did - LOL. The "Continuous Hunting" you mentioned in the video is "Preview AF" (AF-3 in menu) directly above the "Lens Drive When AF Impossible" - "Disable" this as it causes severe battery usage. Love the vid's (and Humility) LOL 🤣🤣
Haha, you’ve got me there! I’m guilty of NEVER reading instructions🙈 My own worst enemy with things like that! Yup, got the Preview AF disabled. Sent me crazy when I enabled that on test! Thanks for watching John, appreciate it👍🏻
@@MarkKerton lots of these options (including the one you talked about) have a quick explanation when you press a certain button (INFO on R6), basically it explains that when off, it rather stops the search and waits for another user-driven attempt, than doing lengthy refocus from 'grossly out of focus state'...they specially mention super telephoto lens 😅
I have a new canon r3 and rf100-500. So I have two big problems focusing: 1. When I shoot from the servo, the focus point of the marker is selected in the center, but in the greatest sharpness there are objects slightly below and to the left of the focus point and this is clearly visible. This is somewhat similar to the Back and front focus on dslr cameras. But here in sharpness there may be an area both above and below, although it should be in the center... And it happens all the time. Canon cps confirmed that this is in the tolerance zone, but I doubt it, since I have been shooting cars and moto sports, Formula 1, Le Mans, rally and so on for more than ten years. This year, using canon cps cameras, I also observed such a problem on some r3s... What is it, marriage or software? According to my data, the Japanese gave some service centers a program for working with r cameras and there it is really possible to edit the internal focus settings of each camera sample in a non-direct way and prescribe each lens. But canon is officially silent... 2. The problem is low-contrast objects.
I was having similar focusing issues with my R3 too. I shoot fastpitch softball and the focusing was driving me bonkers. Some shots blurred and some shots sharp. I'm going to try your suggestions and see what happens.
My one main huge issue with the R3 is on the video shooting side. For some reason, when connected to an external monitor via hdmi, you cannot send a clean video out via hdmi, while menus are on the cameras tilt screen. It's baffling. Another Canonism. My 1dx2, 5d4 both send clean out while menus are displayed on cam screen. The options are right there in the menu, except on the R3. Called Canon CPS Canada, they agreed it's a huge oversight. Sent the issue up the chain of command. 6 months ago... Maybe do a video on that!
Mine was already on and still can't get a single shot of a bird sitting still all on focus. It's driving me nuts. I have tge ef lens adapter for the r3
I shoot action sports with an EF 70-200 on the R3 and it works pretty well. Was having occasional AF issues at full 200 mm but it got better as I got better. Canon tech did not expect the EF to inherently have problems and stood behind the EF quality even though the RF has two focus motors. EF firmware is not user upgradeable but not always a typical issue. You can get that lens custom matched to your camera, for tiny impact but that's not your issue here.
So it was not the GPS as some others suggested... One wonders why such setting as this even exists, or perhaps I should say, why it has such a poor wording on that setting!
@@MarkKerton Yes, because the label on that setting is quite obtuse! You have to read the full description, then it makes sense once you know that. But it's not self-evident.

@jgzphotography are you on Facebook on any of the sport related groups or Instagram ? Would love to ask you more about the R3
AFAIK, it will always try and focus and chew a shit load of battery with that setting on...

Just want to say thank you Mark for given us what Canon should have set the camera with this setting ON in the first place!!!!!
Nice one, Mike as in my last comment, pleased it’s helped you out. The R3 is one beast of a camera and it does take a lot of setting up!
fantastic news. Im pleased it's sorted out now. Im now off to change the settings in my R3

Have only noticed a mildly improved hit rate with Preview AF. Haven't noticed an impact on battery even though it would common sense to expect that.
great news your R3 works properly! Obviously Canon got it wrong as for using super telephotos ( like the 400mm) it should be turned to 'OFF'
