Fly fishing for stripers didn't start the way I expected

- Stripers are awesome and yet so different than any trout I've every hooked into. They chase and eat flies aggressively! The fish I got weren't huge, but somehow my rods weren't up to the task. The current theory is they got hit by the seat belt in my car because both rods broke in a similar place.
@colbymyers6278 knows the river well, go sub him up for more
Both were covered under warranty and new sections are on the way.

I think I may have damaged them in my car. The seatbelt may have been tapping against them. They both broke in the same spot.
A striper video! Awesome. There's some dude on the Napa river with a 100k jet boat. He reports 100 fish days with the fly when they are in. I never believed the guy until I watched him catch a dozen in 20minutes. I've been wanting to fish for them with flies but I have a hard enough time with conventional tackle lol.
I kinda like the new editing direction on this one! Now I gotta check the seatbelts when driving with assembled rods.
So glad that you were able to get into some stripers! Sucks about the rods!
I learned a ton, wouldn't have found any without Colby's knowledge. The rods have been fixed, I"m back in action.
Cool video Eric. I can tell you why you broke your rods. It is possible you had a fracture on your rods which would have contributed but most likely the reason for the breakage is you are highsticking. You are putting a lot of strain on your rod when you are fighting a "saltwater" fish with your tip up high. Not only are you battling the weight of the fish you are fighting the speed of the current of the Sac. What you should do is fight it like a saltwater fish and use the butt section. You do that by keeping the rod tip level (or about level) with the horizon. Fight it from there. If you want to pull on him, pull from the side as oppose to upwards. The rod should bend at the butt section. Hopefully that helps you from breaking any rods in the future. Cool video. Sorry you broke your rods but at least you landed those fish.
This is what I was thinking too.
BIG TIME high sticking. He is trying to get it close to the boat but is putting far too much angle to achieve it.
Awesome video guys, minus the rods breaking of course. Colby is the man!!
Yeah, was a super fun trip. Those fish are way different than any trout I've hooked.
Proud of you for constantly pushing the envelope of your knowledge. When I fish the Sac for trout with my 7 wt. I always worry a striper might get my streamer!
Very cool new style vibe and edit Eric, I really enjoyed it and I think others will as well :)
You took breaking two rods in two minutes very well.
If you're taking suggestions I'd say don't do the 'orvis over the head' retrieve. Have your rod tip low, horizontal to the water. You will put more pull on the fish and you wont be pulling them to the surface of the water where they don't want to be. Also keep your hands on the cork (I think you were doing that already though)
Sorry the rods broke Eric, that sux. However another great video with a cool different dynamic! Stripers are fun👍
Take care dude✌️
That was painful and no wrap up at the end from Eric….probably crying in his dubbing spinner after those rods busted. Saw the pics of the seatbelt and while it seems improbable that could have caused it, having two rods break in the same spot with little rod stress seems weird too. Hope you can get them fixed and it’s not another Sage incident with up to 6 months backlog
Just felt like the video ended on a positive note and didn't need further explanation. The Colton rod already put a new section in my hands less than a week later. The cheaper piscifun rod I'm still waiting on, but they said they'd replace it.
This was an expensive video! Are Bass Flies in your future?! (Note- The Fly Shop in your backyard sells the Whitlock's Swimming Frog and it SLAYES for me in the central valley)
Eric you are folding your rods in half. Try to not force the butt forwards to bring the fish in like you can see around 7 m
Ouch ... Sorry bout them rod's...but yes you do have something to show for it. Hey Eric...
Awesome video and sorry about the rods! I saw that you use a GoPro HERO8 and I want to know how you use a battery pack with it (if you do at all).
In this case, the 3rd person pov was a hero8 and I did have a usb power bank plugged in. Just so I had one less thing to worry about. For my chest mount, I just swap batteries.
Brutal but hey at least you landed them!
Nice video! That was fun, come back anytime
That is crazy! And very disappointing, I don’t think I’ve ever had two rods break on a single trip. What brand were they?
One is a Colton tailwind 9wt which is quality. The other was a cheap piscifun rod. My current theory is damage.in the car because they both broke in a similar spot
@@driftstonein addition to the high sticking putting a lot of stress on the rod, they are designed to bend until the cork grip. When you pull from above the cork, more of the stress gets concentrated in the remaining part of the blank, then it can snap.
OH MAN, Eric. That is brutal. I'm not sure how that happened, and it's super weird they broke in the same place. Before I knew what I was doing with my fly rods, I used to take my Sage RPL out to Point Pinole and hoist stripers up to the fishing pier, and I really horsed those fish on that rod. And it's an 8 weight, so, I feel like you're right in that something strange happened. Either way, that's rough.
As an aside - how'd it feel chucking a spinning rod and crankbait? Bet it felt a little dirty. ;)
Lol it did feel a little dirty, but it was still fun to hook up on gear.
I stuck my rod back in the car where I placed them last time and the metal buckle from the belt was hanging against the rods right where they broke. I'm pretty certain they were fractured. Going to put the effort to use rod tubes now.
@@driftstone I use stick jackets and reel covers (I use Vedavoos). I use spey rods that I don't care to share how much money I've spent on, and I've never had any issues. And it's super convenient because you don't have to break down your rods.
High sticking the rod with a Striper on, of course the rod broke. Forgiven as you were honest and admitted you had no experience with the fish. Explosive power is a Striper characteristic.
I would never have thought a 16” striper could break a 9wt fly rod like that
moonshine rod?
You can’t have the rod that high with the fish that close bud. Angler error. That’s a stiffer rod. It’s less forgiving.
What wt were those rods your broke? Maybe too light for that aggressive landing? Pole was bending a lot im not experienced just asking for info thanks for the video
A 9wt and a 7wt, well heavy enough to handle them. I think there's a chance I hurt them in the car because they both broke in a similar spot
