Bob Clouser Tying His Famous Minnow Pattern

- Legendary fly tyer Bob Clouser invented the Deep Minnow in the mid-1980s, and found the sparse fly was incredibly effective for smallmouth bass on the Susquehanna River, his home waters. The Clouser Deep Minnow is simple and easily customized. Today, fly-fishing anglers tie the Clouser Minnow, and variations of it, on a variety of hook sizes and types, depending on the target species and type of water. The belly and back are tied with various color combinations of bucktail accented by a length of flash. Lead, brass or tungsten eyes provide the weight to animate the fly and get it down in the water column, where it behaves much like a conventional jig. A popular version is the Half-and-Half, wich shares elements of the Deep Minnow and Lefty's Deceiver, created by Bob Clouser's longtime friend, Lefty Kreh.
In this video, the inventor of the Clouser Deep Minnow shows you how he ties the fly that has caught fish all over the world.

Very cool to see Bob Clouser tying his fly and giving all those pointers.
The clear explanation of these subtle techniques is priceless!
I tie and use these Minnows extensively. Thanks Bob!
This is one of the best instructional videos I've watch. Having it demonstrated by Bob is an honor. His Clouser helped me catch my first Oio (bonefish) here in Hawaii.
This is a very special video. I am very thankful for the posting of this tutorial...from an absolute LEGEND!
Watching a tying tutorial featuring the pattern's original creator. Great stuff! Can't get any better than that.
Would love to see one of these with Bob tying his Crippled Minnow.
Thank you Mr Bob Clouser for a timless classic , and a true legend at the vise .videos like this are an absolute treasure thank you
Bob's a great guy and his deep miniw is one of my favorite flies.
Wow a masterclass from the master , as of today ill be tying this minnow correctly after all these years doing it wrong lol , many thanks Bob : )
Interesting how his own tying of this fly has evolved ever so slightly and how his demonstration of the finished profile should look 👍👍👍
Brilliant. A classic. Still works today. I was using a Marryat reel and caught a large fish. A fisherman came over and asked tosee the fly. After looking at the fly he noticed the reel and said "that was a good reel in its day." Out of my smart moouth popped - "Good thing the fish don't know what year this is." Same for the Clouser Minnow - a classic that works. I like it in yellow slow and deep for Fall run Brown Trout. Thanks for the tying instructions.
I bought some clousers from Bob’s shop 25 years ago, bought them from him that day. I still have some of those in my box today.
An absolute treasure. So simple and fun to tie. It will catch anything that swims. Just made 2 new ones for the WI opener this weekend.
Bob, you’re tying it all wrong😉. There should be a Noble Prize for this fly; thank you for your fly and the tips.
The voice and hands of experience.
Absolute legend.
Very nice looking!
Species I have caught with various color and size Clousers: Ling Cod, Rockfish (several varieties), Kelp Greenling, Sea Run Cuthroat, Bull Trout (in saltwater), Sculpin, Striped Bass, Coho Salmon, Chum Salmon, Chinook Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Lahotan Cutthroat Trout. Next up going to try it for Bonefish in Hawaii. Thanks for a great fly! It's my "confidence fly" in saltwater.
I took a class with Bob and Lefty (separately) 25+ years ago. Lefty was like "This works." And Bob was like "Do it like this, because it works." No wonder these 2 guys were like peas in a pod.
The ultimate pattern.
Bob rocks!!
Thanks
I can tie a Clouser Minnow better than that fellow. The nuance and detail that make such a simple fly special on display by the master himself.
Just awesome!
Somerset,N.J., Met Gartside, Popovics, Lefty and Bob. Bought Jacks and Bob's stuff. Bob had a kit made up for crayfish which work. They were all genius' as you know.
A friend of mine was at a Fly fishing show a few years back now. There is Bob tying his fly. Suddenly this guy gets up and says "That's not how you tie a Clousers Minnow!!!" ......sigh some people.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Clouser minnow, and fish it all the time. But you have to admit this is just a buck tail jig for the fly angler.
Who knew that all lures imitate shit fish eat.
What size hook and lead eyes is he using?
Luar biasa
Please do not add background music to these videos.
Too late! Did the Marine Corp teach biching?
Thank you Bob for sharing and giving us so many great flies!
Bob’s Clouser is responsible for me catching many big smallmouth through the years. Thanks Mr. Clouser !
in boy scout lashing class...we were taught that the "helicoptering" around the eyes was called "frapping" ... fun word, good old days about 40 years ago lol.
Arguably the best fly pattern ever invented.
No argument needed😅😅
@@djavidianmx1832 , Wolly Bugger is a good contender
What an amazing teacher. I learned a lot from this. Thank you!
One of my favorite patterns. My favorite fly for Chinook Salmon in Chile. Deep finder, easy to tie, cheap and so effective. Thanks to Bob for that one. 😁
I love that this is preserved on video for posterity, thanks!
That was an exceptionally instrumental video by the Man! Thank you for the video. Immediate sub.
Happy to see this in my feed today. Thanks Bob. Tied with you at Bears Den in Mass some years ago. Great Instruction as ever.
I tie so many variations of this here in Alaska and they all work amazing
I saw him tie a few years ago. I started moving the led eye further down the shank like he does. Now my clousers glide and sink more evenly and not in a nose first jigging motion.
It surprised me to see him place the eyes halfway the hook. He didn't mention why, but now i know. So logical .. Thanks!
Yep, that's a huge detail I discovered too.
Those lead eyes feel especially good when it bounces off the back of your head.......lmao Anyone who knows just knows what I'm talking about....😂
Wow. I've had his book for decades now. I've seen him in person many times and this video still does it justice. Caught so many fish . Between Bob Clouser and Bob popovics, they got me into the game in my early 20's .
Thank you
Oorah.
Just rewatched. Thank you again sir 🙏🙏
A true Legend
Gorgeous fly, but the pitch of your voice diving at the end of every sentence will haunt my dreams till the day I die. Great fly though.
I've been really considering switching to Solarez, this seals the deal!
Awesome. It's like he's done this a few thousand or more times!
Fish for life! But isn't every fly that he ties called a Clouser? 😉
So many incredible little details that so many tyers miss. Met him and Lefty at the TFO booth in Denver 15 yrs ago. Both great guys. Bob told a funny story that he was doing a demo at a show on this fly and a very determined young man kept telling him he was doing it wrong. He knew because he had just learned how to tie this fly in his fly tying club the week before. Needless to say they all had a great laugh....WITH the kid, when the kid's buddies told him who he was talking to.
I have tied these fly's from size 12 all the way to 2/0 adjusting to the fish I'm after from panfish to large mouth bass. this and the woolly bugger let's me fish for fun and to eat. thanks for the video.papa wishing well .❤️🙏🕊️😁
wonder how many people have caught there first whatever on a Clouser deep minnow? millions I would guess
The first bass I ever caught fly fishing was on a Clouser minnow. It wasn't very big but one of my most memorable.
Thanks for giving the fly fishing world such a nice gift!
Great video and lovely to see the originator tying one if his own famous patterns for posterity.
Awesome, some nice little tips there. You get the sense that he has tied a few of these over the years! Lol.
Awesome fly ,I love the way Bob takes his time and shows us newbys how to tie it
The Lord of the Fly. Thank you to a true gentleman.
God bless this man.
👍👍👍👍☕☕☕
Beautiful fly
So, there's someone named Clouser responsible for the legendary Clouser minnow....Is there a guy named Bugger out there somewhere?
I’ve fished with Wooly a few times, cool guy.
@@canadiangemstones7636 I fished with Crazy Charlie and to be honest the guy is crazy..
What a gem. Thanks for sharing.
