Loading Cattle the Small Farm Way

- Today we have to load cattle, and we're doing it the small farm way - straight from the pen and without a chute. Our Dexter steers are fairly tame, but it still can be a tough job to get them on the trailer, and I give some tips for making cattle loading on small farms a bit less stressful, both on you and the cattle!
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours
-We do not ship our farm's products
-We do not sell live animals

Grew up cattle farming. Loved as a kid. I would make them pets. The one we'd keep always got a name like supper, freezer or dinner. It was was the way of life. Going back to that this year again.
You know exactly what your animals have eaten and what they have NOT been injected with!! Wish I was closer to purchase your product!
He's not playing God. He is a man that is doing what he loves, and feeding his family as well as others...Happy father's day! Pete...

I life in a city, I don’t butcher my food chicken pork or beef. I have been to a butcher and watched and on a farm and watched it strengthens my belief that I want good farmers and good farms to supply my food. I like to see my food is well cared for. We are very lucky to have a “farm to butcher to me “ shop near our home. Have met the farmers that raise beef for this butcher and they have a day we can go to their farm if your up to it. It really makes a difference knowing where your food is raised
I had someone actually say, "Why do you kill animals? You should just get meat from the store and leave the animals alone" To much separation from reality is a really bad thing!
At first I laughed reading this but I stopped suddenly. This is not a joke. This is sad!
@@poulthomas469 i guess they hear too much about the fake meat Bill Gates is pushing!!!
😂😂😂😂😂
Logical explanation of the process of raising beef cattle for sale at the local farmers market.
Last year we started buying small stocker calves to raise. From the first day we explained to our then 3 year old is they will become hamburger to feed us and others. But our job is to give them a great life while they are here. Raise our food with integrity and ethics.
That's the way we are with our livestock to be getting a great life take good care of him make him happy to be alive.
I don't know how they enjoy the screaming of the little ones but other than that they have a peaceful place to live.
Thanks for being with those great animal lovers.
Yup, that's exactly how small farmers and ranchers look at the evolution of their livestock---well spoken and non-apologetic; I like that! Thanks for another great video and for taking me down memory lane again.
Thank you for this excellent video. As my husband and I are just starting out with cattle, your videos are so valuable.
Hope you had a fine Father's Day Pete - Told one of our locals who had been whining about sound of machinery during planting that the farmers were really WOKE they woke up at 4 A.M and worked to after dark P. M. to keep her and the rest of the county fed - really enjoy your videos!!!!!!!
My wife and I love your channel. You've been blessed with a great setup that came through your family, and you're keeping up the old ways and the old farm.
We just bought a rusty trailer like that as we prepare to get our first cow/steer. We needed one anyway for the sheep and goats and pig we have, so this is an upgrade for us from heaving them into a cage in the truck bed! We used the metal roofing coating/paint to cover ours. Here in AL, the shiny aluminum look reflects the heat away and keeps the animals cooler. Our barn cats now use it as a daytime napping area. It took an afternoon and not much $ since we had the roof coating from patching the barn up. We love your videos and are thankful for all you share. We've learned so much. Hubby is binge watching all the hay videos as this season is this first time ever cutting and putting up hay. :-)
Growing up we raised or hunted all of the meat we ate. It's just part of life.
Happy father's day to you Pete. Have a great day with your son.
Happy fathers day Pete
Domesticated livestock wouldn't exist if it weren't for people eating them. You do it right, thanks for sharing.
Happy Father’s Day to you. Raising cattle for food is part of the life cycle.
I just discovered your channel and already I love it. I’m starting off on my venture of cattle breeding on our small hobby farm in Australia. Lots of hard work and hopefully… rewarding times ahead.
Thank you 🙏
Get to continue my childhood farm experience with you,I don’t get dirty or smell like the barn yard as I tag along, win win for both of us.Glad I left the farm to successfully accomplish another career but you and Hillary really are very contented with your production of videos and I always feel more connected with life after I watch you in real life activities.
Your a great farmer Pete and Hilary. Respect your daily work to care for animals during their time of life. Most people buy beef, pork, and poultry at the store. Yesterday here in SE Virginia, I was driving behind a large semi truck pulling a large pig trailer full of young pigs going to the Smithfield plant not far away. My wife sees their eyes and freaks out. All I see is bacon and smoked ham slices. But, how were these pigs raised? How are they going to be slaughtered at the plant. Smithfield plant is now owned by the chinese. I would rather consume Pete's pork since it's raised in excellent conditions. Thanks Pete and Hilary.
I grew up on a farm. So I know what you’re saying.
Same here. Small farm in eastern kentucky. Raised hogs milked cows and killed beef for food. It's the cycle of life
Pete, you do an excellent job of presenting what needs to go on with the farm.
You're not only a great small farmer Mr. Pete, you're a philosopher too! Happy Father's Day!
Happy 😃 Father’s Day Pete
Pete, I really enjoy your channel. Thanks.
When you are a farmer, you sometimes have to put your feelings to the side about the animals. In the past, we hand fed animals because of mother's rejection (this is where a person gets attached) and still butchered them when of age. Great show and keep up the good work. Small farmers makes the world go around much better.
Pete you are absolutely right people do need to know where their food comes from and it's not from Cub Foods or Walmart.
Happy Father's Day!!
From this Bachelor Farmer, Happy Father's Day Pete! Everyone has a Father!
Happy Father's Day!
If you keep doing what you're doing, we'll continue to enjoy it. Keep it up Pete and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
I'm glad to see you use the old equipment and simpler ways ... It makes your channel more relatable and relevant to me.
Happy father's day great video
Pete you probably treat your beef cattle better then the beef raisers out west when they have thousands to take to get butchered. Thanks for sharing your video with us. Ed
On the family farm bulls and very low producers went to the auction or slaughter house. Can't afford to feed them if they don't produce milk. It's a business. Trailer is perfect for your needs. Happy Father's Day.
Happy Father's Day to you, Conan.
I see the John Lithgow resemblance Big Time Pete. Truly Enjoy Your Channel Sir. I myself am 62 years old, many of the times that I watch your videos, You remind me, A Lot of My Dad when he was in his later 40's. He died in Aug 1972, 4 days before his 50th Birthday & 1 month after I turned 13. For that I Thank You, Happy Father's Day to You Pete
If we can't use our actual working pens, we just make an alley out of panels and attach it to whatever pen the sorted loaders are in, back trailer up to the alley, push cattle into alley and up into trailer. Takes about 10 minutes, and the most force I use is shaking a rattle paddle now and then. And Im talking about calves, steers, big cows...I can't imagine having to plan a whole day out just to load a few steers. But, I reckon if you have the time and patience, keep on truckin', my friend. Happy Fathers Day to you.
I completely agree to your life stock handling! You give the animals the best life & least stress = good Farmer! Also I don't think you need a new trailer, but some new paint and and your logo would make good advertising. Many thanks for producing all these Videos, very informative and entertaining!
Happy Father's day buddy
I always give the animal the best life possible. Happy livestock = delicious table fare. Your care for the cattle shows.
Thank you for the video.
That’s what God give use animals for use to eat and Happy Fathers Day to you and Gods blessings for your family
Hi Pete and Happy Father's Day. Lost my dad some 34 years ago and you remind me of him a lot. God Bless and Long life my Friend.
Happy Fathers day Pete
Yes, we need to be closer to the process.
You do a great job with your herd!
Happy fathers day to you pete. Have a great day
Really true. Thanks so much. And yes, it's never easy but it's how it is.
I couldn't think of a better way to honor your father on Father's Day is to refurbish and revamp the Old Ranch I bet he's proud Happy Father's Day
Keep it up Pete.
The way you raised Livestock that has a mission to the world, good job!
Nice little trailer sweet rims bit of paint be a brand new rig
Just what I was thinking, bit of fresh paint, slap the logo on it, all's good.
@@ruthmeow4262 would take a while to do it though
The phase your are running a business which supports your family is excellent and also you maintain the rural life style. The product you is excellent and your raising of theses animals in my humble opinion is the best of ways.
Happy father's day all the best you guys are my favorite channel never boring always help full thanks
That was a really great intro, I giggled 😀
Happy father day pete
Circle of life
Happy father's day to you
did you hear about the scarecrow who won the award??
he was out standing in the field !!
I've been watching and enjoying your videos. I think Hillary and you are so awesome. Clean, hard working, great lifestyle. I truly appreciate your channel.
I have no issues with what you are doing. I don't think I could do it because I get too emotionally attached. I don't think I could even number them. It was odd watching and thinking, "This is the last few hours of their life." But you are 100% right, it's a business, that's the point of raising them, you treat them well, the beef is probably phenomenal. I'm very happy you present your farm and allow us to watch.
I have found working with cattle it is the best to have a mutual respect and recognize that they are large animals that can harm you. Loving the content, keep it up.
Happy Father's Day!
Thanks for all the great examples.
Thanks Pete, enjoyed Sunday as always
You're an inspiration to us, Pete! Happy Father's Day!
Always very informative. Thank you and Happy Father's Day.
LOL @ Playing God. Some folks just have to complain. Don't worry a second about negative folks and their comments. Only concern yourself with things you can fix, change, or give preventative measures. You and Hillary are fine folk Pete! Never forget that. Just keep on truckin. Some very good RUclips channels have burned out because they give weight or credence to the negative traffic. I and many other people love your info, jokes, and film editing. Love ya Brother!
WInter job,...Spray the trailer and put a small farms sticker logo on both sides...🙂
Pete just wanted to say thanks for all you do. I'm a small cattle farmer myself you do such an awesome job explaining how everything operates and the purpose for it all. Happy fathers day and god bless
Happy Father's Day Pete. Love your channel. Keep it up.
You videos are the best! I think I have viewed almost all of them. They are very informative and they cover many topics on a small farm that are harder to find information on. Thanks for such a great channel!
Cows would be expensive pets , yours seem so calm and relax around you can tell they have a good life as they seem to do on allot of the small farms my grandfather raised them and as children we knew what it was all about we respected the livestock but never got attached except for the Dogs and some of the barn kittens.
So nice to have you share with us. I think you have a great life now. Best wishes to your family.
Happy Father’s Day to you Pete. You’re a good man and I appreciate your videos and way of life. Carry on.
Happy father's day to all. I enjoy your video don't let other's negative comments stop you from what you are doing. Keep up the good work
Happy father's day to you Pete! God bless you, sir.
Happy Father’s Day Pete. I enjoy your videos.
Happy Fathers Day. Another time example of life and work.
Thank you, happy Father’s Day!
happy fathers day to you as well...I always love your explanations so clear and concise.. keeping it simple always works
New trailer heck no, the one you got has charm. Love old trailers. 💚💙❤️💜
Happy Father's day to you Pete, have a great day my friend 😀
Cool video

The management of turning grass into to meat is a time honored tradition stretching back to who knows when, and
I agree. If one thinks it is wrong to kill animals for food, they should not be eating meat, drinking milk or eating eggs.
It can be done, but it does take discipline, the ability to cook and B12 supplementation.
Love your videos. And the way you run your farm!
If someone asked that question then I would question "why" they would be watching your lovely channel. Those who either have no idea or those who choose to live a certain way should be encouraged to view your ethics (or at least, not to bother watching let alone comment) Thankyou for being such a great farmer & a wonderful person. Cheers from Australia.
Happy Father’s Day, greetings from Chilton, Wisconsin. Love your videos!!
Happy Father's day
Loved your explanation . And I love watching this channel .
Thanks Pete - excellent guidance as always.
Happy Father's Day
Great intro.. I totally thought you looked like John Lithgow but I just kept it to myself.. lol
You and your wife work seamlessly together, you make a great team. Happy Fathers day
Happy Father’s Day,y’all are doing a great job 👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you for helping us see it done. We are getting our first cows on Thursday and the rest of them on July 27th and I was questioning how we should do it ! Really appreciate you sharing!
I'm on board with you.
I've seen a farmer near tears when a old dairy cow had to go.
Other than the dairy cattle my Dad discouraged naming livestock so we wouldn't get attached.
Your stock trailer looks serviceable for your purpose.
Thanks for posting Pete.
We have a little farm here in Nova Scotia. We have 9 head if cattle . We picked up there from the summer pasture last weekend. We got our easiest 3 no problem. So today we went up 8 am. And we tried everything to get the rest. We got our last calf on the trailer and it turned and jumped onto my step fathers head . It was like a book bag. Knocked him to his knees but he got up with it on top of him and threw it off him. I could not get over to help cause the trailer was backed in tight. But we got them on. Then the crazy thing got up onto the front of the trailer inside and was relaxing. But we are all ok and home now.
Happy Father’s Day
Great video. Thank you for thinking of the small time folks and explaining how you do things. Look forward to watching more of your videos. #justafewacresfarm
Nice job Pete, keep up the good work!
Respect for your way of farm it inspires me! Greetings from the netherlands🇳🇱
