Your putting food scraps in the field, what do you do about rats and raccoons? Also how do you prevent hawks from attacking your chickens?

We do this on a smaller scale and don't have a problem with raccoons. The electric fence keeps them and foxes out as long as you move it often. Same with rats, as long as you disturb the area it seems to throw them off and you don't lose eggs. The chickens will run under the coop to get away from hawks and vultures. Late last fall we lost a bird to a hawk for the first time in 5 years but, for us, I think it's because I had an open day run for them without shelter. I put an a frame of wire fence over their water and a pallet on blocks for them to get under and we haven't lost anymore.

Thx for video. How’s it going w mobile coo now one year or so later? I’m trying to decide best design for similar goal. But we are in north Texas so very different climate. We’ve had chickens but now restarting and gearing up for bigger endeavor.

I’m trying to figure out egg production for 1,000 hens. If one hen lays 5 eggs per week, that would be .8 eggs a day x 1,000 = 800 eggs per day, or about 66 dozen per day. Does that sound about right, or should I reduce my daily production to 60 dozen to account for small eggs not suitable for sale, for breakage, and some lower production hens? What do you produce per day with how many hens?

You should start small and build your market before getting to 1000 hens. You can't really get a concrete number because it changes from time of year, weather, food, flock mood. It changes all year and year to year. It's better to run out of stock sometimes than have too much waste unless you're doing pigs too.

Have you figured out your cost per egg? I’m in Louisiana and just getting started with pasture chickens

Hi Eric - it changes as the price of grain changes and the increases in supplies change. It is something to keep and eye on and keep your expenses in mind when you set your prices or need to change them.
