I’m happy that I’m bought 8GB ram and upgraded ssd to 512GB. This machine works better than my base model 16 inch mbp that’s insane what they done with m1 🤯

@@junaaaoo I don’t know which software you will use but I’m using my mbp to daily work as a iOS developer and everything is working fast and smooth without any issues so if you don’t use your Mac for something like heavy 4k video editing or 3D modeling I would choose 8gb with 512gb ssd.
@@ShredzZ I’m about to start my career in digital marketing now (plus install an x-flight 11 as also starting to do pilot course) . Makes me wonder if MBP 8RAM 512 SSD if enough
Based on your review, I believe that 8Gb is enough for most people. For me, 16Gb is the right choice. I will have 40 chrome tabs open (youtube and other pages) along with word processors, video editor, and dev tools. This is normal for me. I will get 32 Gb if it becomes an option. Better to have RAM 🐏 and not need it, than to need RAM 🐏 and not have it.
This will be my first time buying a mac and I'm low key freaking out. In addition to everyday use, I will be using it to learn sketchup, indesign and photoshop. Also plan on keeping it for several years. Basically until it dies. lol What configuration would you recommend?
Getting an M1 MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM this Friday! Super excited since I’ve been saving up money from work for it:) since my current phone is pretty trashed I’ve been fantasizing abt the iPhone 12 so this would be a dream come true!
I'm just about to order the MacBook Pro with M1 chip. Just doing my final research. I've always wanted a Mac and now here I am researching to get one. I'm so excited!
Matt thank you for the information. I was hesitant on buying the MacBook Air M1 with just 8gb but you've helped with my decision. I am going for just the 8gb of RAM.
Funny you should mention, as I’m on the way, as we speak to our local Apple store here in Houston to upgrade my current Mac Pro (2009) to a brand new 16gb Mac Mini (2020)
I’m debating which model to buy. I’m currently using my mid 2012 13” MacBook Pro. It’s slow and can’t handle much work. Anything is an improvement. I’m just wanting to record guitar/bass tracks using Logic.
Thanks for the informative review. I think I shall opt for the MB Air with 512gb storage - seems like the best compromise. Good luck with achieving your 100k subs! Cheers.
I'm a Graphic Designer from Jamaica who's ready to upgrade my 5 year old MacBook Pro. I plan to get one of the new M1 MacBook Pros but given my limited budget, I've been researching if 8GB of RAM can handle the work I do, or should I fork out the extra $200 for the 16GB. I'm leaning towards the 8GB, your video has assured me that it can handle my workload, but let's see what happens after a little more research.
I have ordered 16 gb macbook pro 256gb by cancelling my previous order of 8gb ram 512gb model for the same price. your video helped to make that decision. Thank you matt 🦋🦋
Thank you for this excellent video. It was just what I was looking for to decide which Macbook Air to buy and in this case it will be the 8 GB. You helped me to be sure of my choice. Thank you for the good work. I saw the channel today and already subscribed. Keep up the good work.
Wonderful explanation, thank you. I have already bought the basic MacBook Pro - you have confirmed that this was the correct option for me. I am absolutely delighted with it.
I have a MBA 16GB/512GB ordered from Apple (delivery scheduled for 12/23/2020). But I watched this video because I'm considering cancelling that order and going to Best Buy tomorrow to pick up a MBA 8GB/512GB -- in stock. Trying to decide if I'm going to regret the decision (and should keep the order) or if I should be happy to save the money and get instant gratification.
I just recently bought the new M1 MacbookPro 16gb 512ssd. My question is, is there a way in which I could run AutoDESK INVENTOR? I know that AutoDESK only has Inventor for Windows, but if I install the virtual Windows, would that run Inventor or is there a way that I could run directly from Mac? Thank you. So far you seem to the most knowledgeable about this topics.
Nice overview! I am a PC guy thru and thru, but have been looking at the M1 powered macs kinda heavily. I ran a hackintosh on an MSI Wind netbook I had and was intrigued but had issues (after all, it was a hack). Would love one of these... even the low end air just for a nice laptop for away-from-desktop use. (subscribed)
The M1 Macbook air is very likely to be my first step into using a mac... I may well just go for upgrading to 16gb just to futureproof the investment a little more, as I'm hoping this can be a daily driver for me for at least 5 years.
I’ve been using an iPad Pro as my main computer for the past five years and the M1 MacBooks are just what I was waiting for. So, I’ll be definitely buying a MacBook Pro as soon as possible!
My MacBook Pro mid 2012 retina has served me well. I plan to update to the MacBook Air - mostly because of battery life and a lighter machine - my actual MBP is still running well aside from those things.
Absolutely awesome, thanks for your video I ordered my Apple mini M1 and wasn’t sure about RAM before that . I ordered 16g but I have to wait 3 weeks to be delivered!! Can’t wait for your update about Windows installation on M1 , cheers.
Thanks for this video Matt! I was thinking of getting the 16GB M1 MBA, but now may just go for the 8GB, as when I use FCP, I usually don't have anything else open (except possibly Safari). Happy Xmas!
I just purchased a Mac mini to replace my old 2011 the new on is Mac mini 16GB of ram and 512 GB storage and Also purchased a LaCie 8TB 2 Big dock thunder bolt 3 RAiD storage thanks for the video I am from Maine USA
Comment for the possible iphone (although I would have commented anyway), I'm right now looking at the macbook air 8 core gpu 512gb 8gb ram but on the fence if I need 16gb or not. As software start becoming programmed for m1 specifically, they'll get much faster and the 16gb won't be needed as much as now but as more programs are written that may be more ram-intensive, more ram may be needed. It's kind of like picking investments. Not sure which way I'm gonna go yet. Your video helped with that though.

Thank you very much for this interesting advice. I am going to order my new Macbook this week and I had great doubts about choosing 8 or 16 GB. Now I already know that 8 GB is more than enough for me. Saving some money is always interesting and so I can invest it in some accessories. By the way, something I'm sure going to need is an USB adapter, something portable and lightweight that I can carry in my pocket. What is your advice on this topic? Thanks again from Barcelona.
Great Video! I'm thinking about investing money on this new macbook air, and I think that for a normal usage of a student, 8GB will be more than enough! Apple is the best when we talk about ram, in my opinion is incredible that a 6gb ram iphone is faster than some 12gb smartphone. If I had to choose a window laptop, I'll certainly start with 16 gb ram. But with this new macbook I'll be very happy when a base 8GB model. ;)
Looking to get the M1 16GB RAM MacbookPro. I do a lot of multi-tasking so it will be useful, else it will also secure it for a good long term use. Btw, I am a new subscriber here. Great content Matt! :)
So what if you hook up an external 4K display and run with an extended desktop. I wonder how much memory that takes away. In other words, will 8GB RAM still be enough in such case?
I'm buying either a MacBook Air or Pro M1 -trying to decthide which one - after listening to your video, leaning toward 8mg- thank you for the great content!
Probably getting the 8gb mostly because of the shipping time... The only practical shortcoming of this seems to be that when really pressing the MB with 8gb up, it uses swap memory which may have negative effect on the ssd in the future. However, I'm not gonna export 8k footage on a daily basis and barely gaming few times a year so it should not be that big of a deal.
I'm looking to replace my elderly iMac with either a MacBook Air or Pro in the near future but deliberating between 8GB or 16GB ram. I'm just want it for everyday use and watching a video so thinking after your video of going for 8GB but have heard if I want to have a desk monitor with keyboard mouse etc. then may need 16GB be great to hear your view on this. Cheers in advance Ian I waiting to put the trigger and hope this puts my name in the hat on the iPhone 12 😃
I’m picking up my Mac mini M1 minimum spec today... it’s replacing my 11 year old Mac Pro that’s been modded through the years. Kind of crazy that I am considering a £700 machine to replace a 6core 32gb, Rx 580GPU. I’m going for the entry level just because I’m curious how transformative this thing is... please put my name in the hat for that phone.. great vid!
I want to buy a Mac pro with the m1 chip now but, I kinda of want to wait till the second generation of the chip comes out. I’m glad Apple has taken this route to their products as it’ll allow for more synchronization between the software and hardware.
I am very amazed with apple silicon!!! I was actually thinking of changing my old toshiba satellite laptop with new one. Now I’ve decided of purchasing the new Macbook Air M1 thanks to you!! I am glad of cleaning up my decision!!
I'm definitely going to buy a MBP this weekend (I think Apple is doing a $150 gift card if you purchase one, not sure if it would apply if you use their student discount of $100). My issue is, considering that this is the first generation of apple silicon, I will definitely be considering upgrading much sooner rather than my usual upgrade interval of 6-7 years. Because I might upgrade to a potential M2?, M3? chip, should I just purchase a base model with 8gb and go pick up one up at the store instead of having a "custom" 16gb build + waiting a month for delivery? I'm leaning on getting the 8gb at the door because I do not do much editing at all, and if I do, I can live with waiting for the job to finish. I also have a built desktop with an i9-9900K + an RTX 2070. Seems redundant to purchase a workhorse laptop!
Yeah bro since is the 1st generation of these processors I don’t think would be a great idea to spend in a macbook with more than 8 gb of ram, u can save now a bit of money, and then when they’re so much powerful u can spend more and keep a laptop for more than 5 years
Yes, I will be picking a Macbook Air with 16gb of RAM because I tend to multitask with Photoshop, Excel and a LOT of tabs open in Chrome. And also in order to future proof. I wish you hit 100k very very soon not because I look forward for you to pick me as the winner of the iPhone 😉 but because you deserve it!
I will buy an M1 MacBook Pro soon because I need a laptop for studies. I am still unsure if I should go with the base model or with 512 GB of storage. 16 gigs of RAM seems to be a bit overkill for the tasks I have to do with a laptop.
I’m contemplating which one i will get. I’m new to apple Tech thanks I found this vid and made my final decision. I will wait for the next gen of M1 the fully furnish version hahaha! No just kidding I may go for 16gb if have extra but for now my pocket is in tight situation 8 gb is enough for me for editing vid and other stuff. Thanks man! Really appreciate your vid✌🏼
Going to be picking up a 16GB MacBook Air once the back to school deal goes live again next July, I’m a sucker for free things when I can get them :p always shunned my sister for her 2017 MacBook Air but I just can’t deny the performance is amazing on these :’)
Im buying a macbook for 2 years now, so i think that now is the right time with those M1 chips instaled.. I will probably go for Macbook Air 8GB, because i looks enough powerful for me!
I have ordered my new iMac m1 with a 8g ram. Waiting on it to be delivered. Would love to get the iPhone 12 Pro. I do like my current iPhone 12. Best phone ever.
I'm deciding to buy the 8GB or 16GB macbook air for at least a 2 monitors setup with at least 10 chrome tabs plus a youtube video running as well as CNBC Live Running. Concurrently, the interactive brokers TWS will be running multiple charts on the 2 monitors. JAVA + CHROME = RAM KILLERS! On my Linux Setup, it maxed out at 7GB RAM usage (consistent).
I own a 2016 MacBook Pro, i7, 256GB, 16GB, Space Gray. Trading it in to Apple for a 2020 MacBook Air, M1, 512GB, 16GB, also Space Gray. Will receive shortly after Christmas. Can’t wait!
@@MattTalkTech To be honest, it probably would be. However, I don't know if I can mentally handle a super fast FANLESS power house AND only needing 8Gb RAM. LOL Right now, I think I mentally feel the "need" for 16gb over 8Gb. Its something that will take me a while to get over. Twenty nine years in the software engineering field and its always been more is better. Thats not necessarily true in this case. 16Gb is more about making me feel better. ;-P
I’ve already decided on just 8GB RAM, and 512GB storage. My only question is do I get the 7 GPU core or 8 GPU core Air. I am a bookkeeper for a nonprofit and I will be doing some gaming on it. My current Windows computer is about to crap out, it’s almost 5 years old
I am a computer science student and I use it for MS Office, Discord, Zoom, Chrome, and I code in Java, C++, and Python. I don't play games. I'm planning to use Adobe Creative Cloud products so should I get 8gb or 16gb?
How many years do you feel you’ll get out of it using it the way you do currently?? By the way appreciate all the educated points you stated.. I believe that I’m going to purchase the 16gb only because of the longevity an the option to be able to be more efficient if ever needed..
I'm getting my very first mac and I want a macbook air. I was going to get the 16gb option, but the earliest it would be delivered is December 30th. I really need a new computer sooner and Im trying to work out if I am compromising by getting the 8gb instead.
So do you agree that 8GB is enough for most general users on the NEW M1 Macs?
Omg hiiii
Yeah it’s enough if your not a heavy user. I’m happy with my core i3 with 4gb ram
I think the 8GB ram is more than enough for me, ofcourse that's because I'm comparing that to my Toshiba Satellite that has a 2GB ram.
I think it would b enough for me!😍 I really like that Mac

Actually only with 8K video, where it made quite a difference, probably due to swapping. With 4K it didn’t matter that much.

I'm thinking of Ram 16 and SSD 256, if I need more, I will use external memory Do you think that a good decision buy? or Ram 8 SSD512
I am very amazed with apple silicon!!! I was actually thinking of changing my old toshiba satellite laptop with new one. Now I’ve decided of purchasing the new Macbook Air M1 thanks to you!! I am glad of cleaning up my decision!!
Excellent explanation, thanks 😊
Yeah bro since is the 1st generation of these processors I don’t think would be a great idea to spend in a macbook with more than 8 gb of ram, u can save now a bit of money, and then when they’re so much powerful u can spend more and keep a laptop for more than 5 years
Away love your comments on the apple product. Will supporting you forever!
I got a good deal on a 2018 Mac Mini so I won’t upgrade yet, but am excited for the future Apple Silicon offerings! Would love the phone 😊
Just picked up an Air 8 G today love it. Keep up the good work.
Planning to buy the M1 MacBook Air and this video helped a lot in deciding the RAM
I ordered a MacBook Pro 13" M1 with 16GB RAM. Thanks for the video!
Great video man! I’m planning to get the MBP for school and my engineering classes :)
Hello, excellent video. With 8gb is enough to develop Xcode apps or games in unity?
THANK YOU!!! I needed a video like this
Reason is in my country south Africa they don't sell the 16gig option. It's a custom order which will take 6-9 weeks
and complicated order process
Going for the 8 gig option. Thanks for the assistance. Hoping to with the iPhone 12
I am watching your video on my new M1 8g - my first ever Mac and I love it! Now to learn how to make the most of it.
Going to be picking up a 16GB MacBook Air once the back to school deal goes live again next July, I’m a sucker for free things when I can get them :p always shunned my sister for her 2017 MacBook Air but I just can’t deny the performance is amazing on these :’)
Exactly what I needed to watch right now!!
I'm gonna hold off for 32 gb ram. I use Logic and want to use multiple Vst, and many tracks with many plugins.
You should check out MaxTech's testing videos, although you still may want to hold off.
I own a 2016 MacBook Pro, i7, 256GB, 16GB, Space Gray. Trading it in to Apple for a 2020 MacBook Air, M1, 512GB, 16GB, also Space Gray. Will receive shortly after Christmas. Can’t wait!
Currently contemplating whether to switch to macbook air 8gb now or wait for 14 inch macbook next year.
I’ll be picking up a MB Air with 16gb and 1 Tb storage as I want to do some iOS development
To be fair 8gb would be enough for that....
16Gb is more about making me feel better. ;-P
With 7core gpu or 8 core gpu?
@@muradhasanov1363 Going 8 core
I am planning to buy an M1 MacBook. I was confused between 8GB and 16 GB. Now, I think I will go with 8GB. Thanks @Matt Talks Tech.
Going for the new MacBook Pro . Thank you for sharing your expertise 🙏🏽
I absolutely love my M1 MacBook Pro 8GB works absolutely great for photo editing and video editing!
It sure is great and more than enough!
Yes! I’m going to be picking up the m1 Mac mini 16gb soon! Love your vids man!
