- The new Apple MacBook Air M1 is here and after everyone I know has been bugging me to try it with its new M1 chipset, I gave in and bought one. So let's see how someone not using Apple's programs does in terms of battery life, photo editing, video editing, and more in this M1 MacBook Air real-world test.

This guy is doing some actual practical tests by starting with the lowest base model which most people will buy.
A lot of people have done tests with the base model.

This is the first M1 review I've seen with coffee and without benchmarks - one of those two things has earned it a thumbs up 👍

love these real world tests - great work!
1:32 while your friends have been very impressed with the performance of the new M1 MacBook Air, your workflow is probably more what the computer is actually intended for. I have had my M1 MBA for about 2 days and so far it is my favorite laptop ever.
One of the best real world tests I've seen on this Macbook
This guy is the absolute master at making it look like his camera flies over and sets itself up as he walks in a room.
I hate you for convincing me to order one of these.
I blame Jaime really
I misread your name as “Intel” and just about lost it. 🤣

Very nice 'real-world' review. I'm getting tired of seeing benchmarks and it's nice to see someone with a real appreciation for battery life.
Yes, more memory is usually the better choice and I really can't wait (nor even imagine) what the next Apple Silicon machines will be like. We've got a pretty exciting couple of years ahead of us.
I'm also a bit tired of watching video editing demos, but this is RUclips and the fact that you can even try to edit a video on the MacBook Air is pretty amazing.
This is probably one of the most well explained reviews I’ve seen so far. Also appreciated that you tested it out with Adobe since that’s also what I use to edit stuff. I guess you just got a new subscriber here 😉
Thank you!
so cool you're in NY. Also you're one of the vids that made me buy the XM4's. keep up the great work
every part of this video was everything i wanted and it's just so satisfying
🙏🙏🙏
The thing that impresses me the most is holding that phone for 30 minutes in your hand...
meow meow
Yep... Watching paint dry for 30min 3 times... That blew me away
@FirePhly really??? ;-)
Came in here to get convinced to get a Macbook, and that little glimpse of the Blade Studio made me want that instead. What a beautiful machine
This was simply an amazing video - love the tests for battery life - thank you for a great video
One of the better reviews I've come across. Subbed!
This is the most authentic video on M1 chip so far on RUclips 👍
The kind of video that I like most. I just bought. You convinced me and I'm very happy with my purchase. Thanks dude
This is the most honest practical review i've ever watched
I think it’s a smart move for Apple to move to its own chips. Hopefully, this will encourage/force intel, etc to raise their game. I only just bought a new MacBook about 6 months ago and so it’ll be a couple of years before I need a new one. Seeing as I don’t really use a laptop on the move, I might get a Mac mini or an M series iMac.
Great stuff, as always, David! Have been keen to get this sort of input on Air vs Pro ahead of updating a Pro in the New Year, so Big Thanks and I'll watch out for your Pro test in due course. Yeah, OK, I'll get on-board with Decodr too 😉
I love mine. I was a lifetime Windows user until a month ago when I bought the base Mac Air M1. I am very happy.
Most people misunderstand what's great about the "unified memory"
If your CPU has an integrated GPU, it already has to share the system memory with the CPU.
The great thing is that it's on the SOC, and that allows both the CPU and GPU to have very fast memory speeds.
Great and informative video man. Thanks
Thanks so much!

I was skeptical for new macbooks but when I saw your review which good and explanatory. I would try new macbook 👊
love the way u say coffee check
This was a great video. I bought a Macbook air '13 2020 about 2 months before silicone released. I'll wait till they get the bugs straightened out in a few years before jumping ship.
A really informative vid cheers mate 🍻
Coming from a 8 yr old VAIO, I’m SUPER EXCITED to get the new air!!
Great video keep it up as always stay safe 👍
This kind of video is actually better than reviewing everything inside a room, like to see this more 💯
Subscribe and you will 😊
M1 really is a game changer. Can't wait to see the development of this chip in future considering how good this first-gen is. Excited to hear that you want to buy the 16GB as well. I am very curious about how much better the performance can be with more RAM.
Finally a real life honest review..
most of my work is just coding and presenting and reading and no photo/video editing, so I bought a pro one with 8 gigabytes ram, just about 15 minutes ago... now after watching your video, I'm really happy with my new laptop
So glad I could help!
You just got a new subscriber! Nice upload.
I did the same test with the same spec fo MBAM1 and final cut pro and it blew through 4k RED footage like butter.
You've definitely helped me a ton with your info on this man! 🙏🙏🙏 I run Premiere and shoot with a Sony A7iii not the siii so this should handle my footage even better than my current desktop. 😅 I'm going for 16 GB of RAM. Not only is it good for now, but it helps future proof the laptop as well.
I like your video. I think there would be a lot more views had this come out a couple days earlier.
David, thank you for the videos and reviews. First, love the look of the apartment, the earth colors, and the wood. Second, you are a hard-core coffee drinker to be sitting outside on what had to be a cold day in NYC, I am very impressed. You need a coffee and coffee maker sponsorship for the channel. How hard is the transition to Apple products? Never used any of their products. Stay safe.
Good review and nice to see the motion elements added into the technical review , that lightened the overall mix and made what is essentially a tecnical Mac review into a very watchable video for this of us out there who arent MacHeads
Excellent video. I understand a lot more about my new MacBook now. Thank you.
great video, love the editing style
This was the most perfect video I could find, THANK YOU! When do you think Adobe photoshop will be optimized for the M1? Need need PH for work😂
This will be a great baseline test for pre optimised software. As soon as the non apple software gets optimised for apple I'd love to see a comparison.
Wonderful video! I just bought my first MacBook and I’m curious how the M1 chip stacks up against other competitors.
That OLED screen on the razer blade is sexy but the 60hz and power draw forced me get the 300hz screen on my RB15. But much happier than I would have been with a 16" MBP.
This video is literally professional and highly useful! Thank you!
Thank you!
The best video i saw so far about the m1 . Thanks!
Thank you! M2 MacBook Pro video coming soon too!
Awesome format. I like it.
Amazing real life video.. Thanks so much..
Appreciate it..!! 💫
Thank you!
Excellent video & review, thanks! I’ve the same MacBook too, same colour, but the 512gb version. I just love it! Fast & snappy with amazing battery life. Stay safe over there. Best wishes from Australia. 🇦🇺😁✌️
Thank you! You too!
This is the perfect in-real-life-use case video that I needed. I've been a lifetime windows user and I think I'm leaning more and more towards apples stuff
as someone who switched to Mac for educational purposes and experience with the OS, I can say its overhyped and not worth it.
I've also been a windows user since forever and never owned a Mac until the M1 Macbook Air and I gotta say that, for the money, this is the most powerful ultrabook out there at the moment. Mac OS is very difficult to use tho, lol
@@marbesto Exactly! I already have a powerful pc where I have my games. And the m1 MacBook seems like it's just what I need, a good laptop with a good battery life that just works
@@marbesto I'm not referring to the laptop capabilities, a third of the people on the Internet who are raving to get one do not and will not even use all of the power of the m1 they just want it just to have it which is fine, but I was referring to the OS experience, and how every RUclips worship us and everyone says windows is trash. although macOS is more polished than windows the overall experience was meh at the best. they both have their pros and cons. for what I need windows suits me best but for the more simple task and day to day, I would say macOS does it just fine
Real life use isn't just video editing but RUclipsrs can't seem to understand.
Yes yes yes
Thank you for the great content
Coffee..Check.. I just wait for this line..
This an awesome review of the M1, especially Apple has that full stack control can optimise the crap out of it.
At first I was watching it and thought, no coffee? Then couple mins in, it's coffee time haha.
I upgraded to the m1 air after my 2013 pro had screen issues haven't had it long enough to make a proper judgment yet but this thing is crazy fast and so far great for music production great W for apple on this one
8gb for músic production??? Thanks!
Just purchase mine can’t wait to get it
I have the 16” MBP for work and there are three things I don’t like about it. The battery life is okay, but nothing to be excited about as electron apps like VSCode or Slack just slurp at my battery. I actually don’t like that it has to be thicker than the 2018 15” just to be able to have decent thermals and decent performance and finally the thing is constantly over 100°F if not higher when it’s at idle. So I’m looking forward to the new M series Macs. I hope the 16” gets thinner but with multi day battery life with a 10 or 12 core CPU.
That was awesome dude
Great review 👌🏾🤙🏾
I had this strange feeling that I have seen you somewhere and then I realised that you look like Tom Hiddleston.😂
No.

‘First thing first, Coffee...Check” ....It never gets old...LOL
I am totally rocking luma fusion for iPad on my M1 MacBook Pro and it's amazing!!! Works so freaking fast and powerful I love it!!!
valid points! liked and subscribed.
Thanks for the vid! Very informative. :)
I think in a few years, it’s gonna crush!! And more importantly what it will force the industry as a whole to do, which is the real exciting part in my opinion. I’ll hold onto to my 2015 MacBook Air for a bit and possibly grab a 2020 13” MacBook Pro if I decide to upgrade within the next year. Apple said 2 years. But I’m guessing more like 3-4. Restructuring software architecture is time consuming. I’ve always applauded apple’s ambitious nature, even when they have fallen short at times. But moving what equivocates to a global industry at this point to shift gears is going to take time. And 2 years is well, ambitious if nothing else.
I've wanted a MacBook for years and finally pulled the trigger on the M1 Air this last weekend. Since 16gb was a month and a half out, and some research I decided to just get the 8gb version (with 512gb ssd). I use it for light FCP editing and some LR and PS. I've been extremely impressed so far. It feels weird editing 4k footage and exporting out of Lightroom on a computer with just 8gb of ram when my main PC is running at 32. Needless to say, sometimes it's nice to edit a vid real quick on the couch on the little MacBook Air. No regrets here!
Do you still think 8GB was worth it after one year?
@@Sana-hp9on Absolutely. I use it almost daily and it handles everything I've thrown at it. I forget it has 8GB sometimes to be honest.
Loki unboxing air m1 😎
Do you think that the next year's model will rise in price? Also I hope they will fill the left-empty space by the smaller motherboard inside with some more battery.
Is there any chance they will also expand the screen to make it bezel-less?
Great video, I'm now curios if the 16gb version performs better now! Looking forward to your next results.
Thank you! I did that video here actually :) - ruclips.net/video/TLrXV9gKy6U/видео.html
First video I’ve watched of yours. Being an fan boy it was nice to see an unbiased review from someone who prefers Windows giving a good review. Clearly Windows beat the m1 in this case but you articulated why very clearly. I would love to see you doing a review of the mpro with 16gb ram. Also just curious what are the specs for your windows laptop?
REAL TESTING! THUMBS UP!
Editing in full resolution only makes sense with a second screen so all that could be way smoother which is a good sign.
Your video editing is smooth af
Thank you! Trying to get better 🙏
@@TheUnlockr OMG , thankyou for replying ! Didn't expect !
Of course! Also trying to get better at that too! 😂
Now *that* is a monitor. And respect for checking out the lowest-spec model.
Better than Benchmarking at same place that's really 🥱🥱🥱😴😴
1:39 : Touching Heart, Nice...
Just a comment about the thumbnail: With that picture, pose, way to hold the Mac, expression, and location, my first thought was it would be a drop test from a building roof.

🤣
hello
hope you are well....
that is a great review thank you but could you please tell me if data science and machine learning softwares would run on it?
thanks
You's the man bro!
Thanks for your video. To sum up if you are using a windows based machine with non mac software and you try to switch onto an m1 with non-optimized software your experience will be less than ideal. Yup we know. I started video editing in mid 2000's on a high end PC and it was a Intel q6600 at the time and it was barely usable then with Adobe Premier Pro. I had to keep upgrading until I got to a I7-7th gen with 32gb and discreet card which cost 2000 dollars and still was unhappy. I converted the machine to a hackintosh and my workflow just worked using Final Cut Pro X. I then used Luma Fusion on Ipad 2020 Pro and it changed my mind completely on SOC. I bought Mac Mini M1 with 16gb and 500Gb ssd and honestly could not believe my workflow was even better so not regretting the 1650 here in Canada investment. I am the perfect candidate though as I am an Apple all the way user. Thanks for showing us the other side of the user experience but mine is perfectly fine.
I noticed that the video you edited was a whole hour long so naturally, it is going to not be as fast as it could've been with a shorter clip.
I really thought I was viewing the wrong channel when I clicked the video. Unexpected intro haha!
Unexpected good or unexpected bad? Lol
@@TheUnlockr good haha!
I’m a student, and I’ve decided to buy a laptop 1 - 1.5k. This seems to be my best bet!
can you try to enlarge photos form your camera in 5 times and try how it works in photoshop, especially with healing brush? thanks
Yes i loved the Format
I almost pulled the trigger on the 16. Its a great laptop even today. But it is funny that you can now edit 4k vids on an M1 air.
Actually the unified ram is fast for a gpu. That way gpu gets large amounts of memory and cpu gets the faster gpu grade memory. Also the copying of data between the cpu and gpu takes lots of overheads which can be avoided in case of unified memory.
For me as a student I think MacBook M1 base model is good enough for me.. cuz me just use it for a casual stuff and doesn’t even use any editing or big programs. Of course the battery also will enough to use. So yea pretty good for a student already. ✨
Yeah I’m making the which to a MacBook super soon! My current laptop only lasts about an hour and that’s when I’m on google, so it’s definitely time for a change
Nice video, good points but, now what would you do with that laptop? I mean, if it's not your main laptop f or anything, does it worth the price to keep it for any secondary task in your case?
Has premiere pro ever been optimized? I have hopes of Davinci working well with this system but I’m glad I already edit on final cut almost exclusively.
This was a great video. I bought a Macbook pro '13 2020 about 4 months before silicone released. I don't know if I should be mad or sad... LOL
thank god for affirm to make it easy for people like me to purchase something so nice like this
pls man make sure you do for M2. that's the one I'm looking too.
Wonderful wonderful review man I just subscribe jus to let you know bless
Thank you!!
Omg the battery life alone is just amazing!!
Of course, with optimization everything is amazing
What was your screen brightness? Not the whole time at max i guess? Battery life on my MacBook air isn't nearly as good as yours
I code with mine and it is absolutely an impeccable beautiful experience. Love my macs
I think the new bigger more badass m1 chips apples rolling out pretty quick will bring better video editing experiences 👌
The Word of the day is optimization. If dell and the others took their time optimizing their machines to work work with windows and intel you would get the same results. Thank you Apple for showing them what they should have done years ago.
Hi, Thank you for this valuable video. Can you please tell me what camera do you use for shooting this video? Thanks
Thanks for the video
Please do M1 MacBook Air get hot when using it for a long period time in a day?
