  • @AndrewMclave
    @AndrewMclave 3 года назад +30

    I’ve got to say 2 things . First, the M1 is a beast and any Mac that has one makes it so much better value than anything intel offers, a phenomenon that is only going to grow over time as more 3rd party devs get their products optimised. And secondly, these videos are simply the best on the internet for helping people make their potential purchases work for them! Having the choices logically mapped out so everything makes sense to their needs is a huge resource, especially with the proof of concepts on display in the images so they can be made crystal clear and easy to recall when people are spending their hard earned money on the fairly expensive technology that will become leveraged by their owners to help them run their lives, be they for work or for education or whatever. These are trying times for everyone and anything that helps you get through them in any way should be recognised as something worthy of praise and should be appreciated as such. So thanks for being so thorough and comprehensive in your coverage of this historic moment for the Mac! I for one am loving your work and now feel better armed to make the right decisions going forward with the purchases that I’ll be making in the near future.

      @@stevemuzak8526 new MBP16 costs the same as the MBP15.
      These CPUs are cheaper to make and need less RAM, so the price might go down for entry level spec and the same but with higher spec. This is what Apple does recently.
      Apple's business model hanged more towards software so they need as many people in their ecosystem as possible.

    • @nickbrough8335
      @nickbrough8335 3 года назад +4

      @@stevemuzak8526 I suspect that Apple will sell them at the same price model for model as today based on these three Computers. 5 nm chips are likely to be very expensive to make and the fact that apple has reused 7 core GPU near fails, implies this to be true. However, a 40 % or more performance increase would exceed all the none-pro machines Apple currently builds as well as equal a number of the very expensive pro machines.
      I estimate that the 16 GB mac mini I have on order is going to give me something close (80 %) to the performance of the 3.8Ghz core i9 processers in the top end consumer iMac. It seems 16GB integrated is equivalent 32 GB standard Intel, then thats a £2,000 + cost saving for me. If I needed real top end performance a £2,500 M1X iMac equivalent might perform something like a low end pro model at £5,000 +. Thats not a bad trade off IMO.

    re swap with free mem:
    macOS carries over behavior from BSD. It will preemptively page-out data that is not used, even when RAM is sufficient, to avoid having to page-out when demand suddenly increases. That's the behavior you are seeing.
    It made sense back in the day when computers had little RAM and disk paging was frequent, but Apple has never eliminated the behavior.

    • @pflaffik

      That Mac is so much better in other ways than the new 13.3” Macbook Pro. 6 speakers, better cooling, much better GPU.
      I ordered the new Macbook Pro M1 with 512 gb and 16 gb ram (which will actually be too much for me), because I don’t want to be tempted to buy a more expensive Macbook Pro when those will belaunched with a Silicon processor. Haha.

      To be honest, I'm doing very light editing so the 8gb of ram works great for me. I use it for work mostly, so I run zoom through the machine and have zero issues at all. If you're going to be performing heavy tasks on it then I would recommend the 16gb. If it's for leisure/pleasure use then 8gb is more than enough I think. Also Apple may be releasing one with a 32gb option so you could wait for that if you can...or get a PC haha but whatever you end up with, I hope it makes you happy friend :)

    Thanks for this. This video really helped ease my concern. I went with a base Mac mini m1 after my 2011 27 inch IMac had enough. I upgraded the ram in that and had 2TB’s of storage. It’s main job was photo editing with LR and PS and basic computing. Hearing how great the M1 mini was, I was sold on it pretty fast. Having a keyboard and mouse, the price made sense and made even more sense when I got a refurbished model. I now have a new setup for a little over 1k. Hearing some people talk about it, they act has if you need 16G’s for anything other than basic computing and even though your test are to the extreme, it shows the 8G version can definitely handle a solid workload. With my needs of simple photo work, paired with a decent external SSD, I feel it’ll be great. The other great part about the mini is the price, it’s relatively cheap for its performance brand new, but refurbished you really have a deal and when an upgrade happens, rather that’s the M2 or something else, you won’t feel bad about jumping on that at all since you’re already set up for it. My guess is, I’ll probably end up with an upgraded mini sometime next year due to the fact that it’ll probably just be amazing.

    This excellent comparison matches my experience. There is only one application where 16GB makes a huge difference: Parallels. Trying to run Windows inside Parallels on an 8 GB Mac is a nightmare because if you don’t allocate at least 8GB to Win10, it just won’t run properly. On a 16GB Mac, you can allocate 8GB to the Mac and 8GB to Win10 and everything runs super smoothly. And the latest Beta of Parallels for M1 is VERY good. Apart from that, 8GB is really sufficient for most people because most people don’t go crazy and keep all these apps and tabs open all the time. Those 8GB M1 Macs are amazing.

    Great comparison, some of us will always go for the in between models, like instead of 8gb get the 16gb and also not get the 32gb
    I always will find myself that buying the lowest model will not only make me feel I could do better & give me a reason to buy more in the future even just to feel better, but I also don't want to throw my money away and get the high end ones. by getting the 16gb I will feel like I don't have the urge to get something better in the next few years, if I get the 8gb I may be tempted to still get the 16gb model in the future which will end up costing me more (of course since I can afford it) if I couldn't I would probably have no choice but to go for the 8gb model or even worse get the intel based model at a very cheap price as they are dropping in price a lot now that the M1 is out

    Best channel ever guys! You really listen to the feedback in the comments. You have been working so hard!
    One small addition to the SSD wear due to swapping: I think that, for most average users, it would make more sense to buy the larger SSD than to buy more RAM. Here is why: 1. we see that even the 16gb model uses swap; 2. larger capacity SSD's have a longer life span (typically called endurance rating). Typically, 512 versions have 50 to 100% higher endurance ratings than the 256gb variants. So a larger SSD with better longevity takes away the fear that the SSD might wear slightly faster (compared to 256gb model)
