The DJI OSMO has been getting perfected and the newest firmware update updated multiple things like using the QS button to switch screens MID RECORDING! Also updated the color profile to be a little more saturated (still has the cinelike profile also for color grading). They also updated the auto exposure algorithm. It way more reliable in extreme temperatures and just easier to use. They also did allow a looping mode in a past firmware update which is great fro the type of content i make. Im slowly getting rid of Gopros and going to just these cameras. I hope they come out with a new model that has a little bit wider FOV in the future.
Thank you Gene for doing follow up videos on gadgets rather than only reviews when products first come out and then never again. I didn't consider the Osmo Action when it first came out due to those bugs but now that I hear most are resolved.... this might be a pick up for me on the next sale.

As a cycling Vlogger I was looking for a setup which is small and easy to carry and also has the oppertunity to add a proper mic. I am using my iPhone and a Sony RX100 MK4 for that. Im pretty sure I will change that asap and get the DJI Osmo. It seems perfect to me. I could rig it onto my bike when I cycle but also easily use it for self filming. Im hyped rn. Loving the new updated information from your post. I recently brought the goPro Hero 8 and I am very happy with my purchased. I wish GoPro had the front facing camera, and removable lens too.
One of the more frustrating things for me is that those vloggers who do have an Osmo Action--and I do realize there are far fewer of them that Hero owners--really don't continue to vlog about using it, how to use it better, things they've discovered about it, transitions using it, cinematic tips with it, etc... There are dozens and dozens of Hero help vids, but it's really hard to find Action help vids that are new/updated. etc. Almost all of them are from the time it first came out and are comparison videos. As an Action owner, this is very disappointing.
When seeing the footage side by side I really love the Osmos colorsy sharpness and stability. Even if it punches in way more, the better quality counts for me.
I learned everything I know about cameras from you and I just got my first camera (canon eos m50) and I’m super excited to get going so thank you for being so entertaining and informative at the same time^^
Robyn check out the sigma contemporary line of lenses for the m50. I got the sigma 16 and it instantly increases the quality of my videos, super sharp and super fast lens
DJI is proving themselves to be a good developer. They're giving old products the firmware updates they so needed with the osmo picket and now the osmo action. A shame they don't get much flack for that but it's also a shame they didn't just release a fully fledged product first. I guess that's the general strategy in selling a product. Release first, fix later
I have the Gopro 7 black which I love , but also today just ordered the DJI Osmo action camera combo for £329 ... 3 batteries plus charger and other mounts.... Didn't go for Gopro 8 for the fact you can't replace the screen.. great vid 👌

Yes! I replaced my GoPro w the Osmo Action and the thing I like most is not only the front screen but the controls. So much easier to turn the camera on/off with my desired settings. Gene hit it on the head about missing a wider POV and I also hope DJI fixes this in another update. They are continually releasing firmware which saves me money! Love DJI
using it to vlog in the car seems pretty decent, the camera quality isn't distracting (decent quality and isn't oversharpened) and I probably wouldn't notice much difference especially with the external mic.
Good review and love the animation on the crop in. What I don’t understand is WHY 4K?? For action shooting, this is not a high end camera where it is required for production work. If uploading to Ytube, why 4K, no platform displays full 4K and it is very low Mbits per second on social media anyway. So how is the 1080p crops?
I vlog with the osmo action during my bike rides. Loved it so much I bought a second one. I’ve never owned a GoPro, but you can do a lot with osmo action footage post production. Also I rarely use a lav mic with it and the sound quality is amazing! Great action camera!
you didn't mention the new firmware updates - you can now Live stream from the osmo action, not sure if it is new or not but it has DJI's log-like setting D-cinelike picture profile and they optimized the stabilization more. Edit - there's also an HDR video option for more saturated colors.
I have d cinelike & HDR since beginning.. So what is the new? Are rocksteady get better in latest firmware? I generally shot 1080 60fps.. is lag in this mode still noticable?
Just a quick heads up the dji mavic mini also got a firmware update, and some of the features are actually interesting for example (24 and 48 fps modes, manual shutter speed and iso, and alot more)
I bought mine when it came out. Took it to Alaska. Had an epic day kayaking by the icebergs. Then our guide panicked when an iceberg got close to us and in haste hit me in the head and the osmo fell off my head into water and sank into the deep waters loosing all my amazing footage. Never compensated it for me either.
I also purchased an Osmo Action when it came out. I still have it. I think I'd rather have lost it kayaking in Alaska. It's too bad you lost the camera but it still sounds like an amazing trip. I hope the wack to the head wasn't too bad.
if i may ask what is the mic you hooked up to the osmo? ive been looking for a really good camera to record building computers, ive looked up everything from gopro 7 silver, yi 4k+ to this and this is the best for the price imo after the extensive research

I owned this for almost half a year and used it everywhere. Much of it has been damaged, even the inside lens, but the video quality is still great. If there was a reason to upgrade, it would be for 360 and HEVC support.
If you changed the front lens of the osmo for a red one to go snorkeling and there is the slightest bit humidity trapped, it will fog the lens cover from the inside with condensate as soon as you go into the water.

I know I love my Osmo Action, kinda wish I could get another one eventually. I have the audio and cage mentioned and thrilled with both of them. Screw on ND filters is Amazeballs!
Like the accs. The GoPro has the well-known brand name but you can get equivalent specs in an almost identical action camera for a fraction of the price of the GoPro, if you shop around.
I actually prefer the little tighter crop of the osmo. In my opinion the gopro always warps the corners too much for my preference! Can’t wait to get it next week

You should start rendering your videos in HDR that way it will preserve the dynamic range of a video and Also give it a little advantage for people watching on HDR enabled TV's

The ultrawide on GoPro is the only thing keeping me using GoPro. As soon as DJI releases a update to go superwide with the Action I'll switch.

Around 6:45 you see the difference in stabilization. The GoPro footage is jittery. The Osmo footage is smooth.

7:00 DJI's colours look noticeably better than GoPro's, wouldn't tell the difference if you told be the left was an old Canon T series!

How is it in cold weather, like snowboarding? Or underwater quality test like for snorkling around corals and sea turtles?
