I think that the key point that this video highlights might just be that 99% of finds are in the range of both detectors. The 1% that are just a little deeper or harder to detect might just be where the manticore shines. For most of us, the price isn't worth that 1%.
Point to note also... Now there are multiple versions of the nox, you'll need to be more specific about which you are comparing. Do they all have the same detection power but different features? I'm lost on that part (as a Nokta guy I stopped paying attention!)

Merrill, in heavy iron increase your recovery speed or slow down your swing to get better separation. It's amazing that you can go back to heavily hunted areas and still pull out silver!

As Jeff showed us, you must pinpoint first, then you can see what the detector is reading.
Do you remember starting with the Nox-600? If you immediately started with 50-tones and all-metal you were overwhelmed and you dug far too much trash as a result.

notice how the well hammered old NYC park yielded much more silver and pennies, than the virgin previously undetected PA. farm trip ? Pa. farmers didn't drop a lot of coins. Kids would go unfed. When a nickel was lost during 1930s Great Depression on a farm, it better damn well be found, or someone got their butt kicked. A nickel meant a loaf of bread for big family 5-10 or more kids.

I found this post today worth noting:
"The problem was recovery speed. the game has changed where I live. If you want to find old coins you need to hunt iron that people ran from in past."
underlying issue ? people don't drop pre-1964 silver, pre-1933 gold coins anymore. only so many in ground, and less and less in ground daily, as areas get pounded by detectorists, and more recovered. we're going into era of digging every hit in hopes of finding coins.
flipside is, where Merrill detects old NYC beaches, will always be best spot. seaside changes daily, relics and coins wash up from offshore, replenishing it. IMHO, he has best metal detecting area in country. it's like people are still dropping silver, gold there, the ocean washes in old stuff from ages ago. detecting is hobby of diminishing returns, unless there's new ground under your feet constantly. there's only so much down there, they stopped making it, a wasting asset just like mining anything else. Merrill has the most productive mine.

awesome vid Merrill, now you're focused on screen, and loaded for bear 🐻 on device settings... settled to your work, calm calculated detecting...I've seen this phenom before, heavily hunted areas will still yield dimes, pennies....the cheaper detectors, less experienced operators, will miss the small coins...and grab the quarters and larger first- leaving behind straggler dimes, pennies for the determined to find...those quarters are an amazing outlier for a hunted spot! iron trash camouflage was hiding them. just like deer hunting, you also need LUCK! when a big buck walks by at oddball location, you still must be able to take/make the shot. you have a WINGMAN...behind every Ace pilot, is a great wingman. I've found many bullets, ever wonder who fired them at what, why ? lol. SUPERB VIDEO 👍

At the 4:20 minute mark, that's classic Minelab tech. The bouncing around, the trace appearing. The one thing the CTX handled really well is the ID - well enough that you could do a lot of the inference right from the screen, and depending on how you configured it, also from the sound. The technique of orienting the coil in a manner to chase out a signals signature has been possible with much older machines. Never 100% reliably though, as even machines I've been using for over 10 years, using similar methods to sniff out bottlecaps, have always been that guessed target. Any bend in even silver coins would cause the same iron grunt or visualization. I feel like the Equinox expanded both the VDI and tonal feedback ranges to cause us to dig more. I too have benefited from the unmasking, but feel a lot of it is way overhyped, and I'd trade the accuracy of the CTX ID over the wide ranges of the Equinox. There's no reason here in Canada a large cent should ring in on the same VDI range as iron, but that's what happens with the Equinox. And it's because certain large cents here used bronze, and not always copper. It's this need to adjust to the machine which has made me less of a believer in the hype of the Nox, because I have older machines that are much better dialed into the VDI and tones than the Equinox can ever achieve. With the added upside that none of those older machines have EMI sensitivity issues where I find myself needing to switch to single frequency on the Nox to stabilize it at locations where old sites I had no issues with EMI, suddenly became issues for EMI when using the "multi-frequency." Sorry for the long rant, but this is a meta topic for me, I'm still trying to get my hands on a Mantictore, but will provide feedback on that when I do. Great video Merrill!

What Merrill is not putting in consideration to his viewers , is that the Manticore can reach better depths due to the fact it's sensitivity can reach much higher levels. Of coarse that's when conditions allow for it. The Nox maxes out at 25. The Manticore can reach 35.

    • @jimcollins9999

      @carlfr2977 Год назад +1

@@jimcollins9999 I believe it's true! I mean that's why Minelab calls it the beast mode. When opportunity allows it, it should grab a deeper target better than having a lowered sensitivity. Yes, we need to see more reports. Plus, wait until we see the new update on it. Minelab may seriously improve this machine even better! We'll see?

    • @jimcollins9999

@@jimcollins9999 I'm sure it's not all the reason too but, it certainly aids it. No other Minelab detector has the scale of up to 35. I'd call it a boost mode in my opinion.... So far I can't bring it past 25 without some eratic reaction ......Minelab says that you enter beast mode after #26 though. They call it that for a reason.

Oh and I love the fact I can charge it while eating lunche or driving to the next spot. 20 minutes of charge adds 2 hours of detecting time. Plus it only takes max of 3 hours to charge compared to overnight like the other good detectors require.

What a great dig in the park. Both of you did so well. The target trace and the red line were indicating iron in the early parts of your video. The target trace also gave indications of multi-targets, a problem in the urban/suburban area. Did that help at all? The 800 and probably 900 (yeah waterproofed) are probably going to be good enough for most people (along with D2 and the Legend). I keep hearing how good the Manticore does on tiny objects but it is clear it takes time to fully sync with the Manticore. I have heard that if there is an object on the center line it probably is not iron.

    • @jeanponce2017

I think you are referring to the pinpointing of the target. Generally a good target pinpoints over where the signal hits it. If iron is the target or nail shaped iron is next to a good target it throws that pinpoint off from the line it is hitting on.

The D2 gets most use because it is SMF and lighter than the Nox. I owned the Etrac. What you will notice is a huge upgrade in speed and operation in space (close targets no problem) you will also have a fast learning curve because the mask is the next generation of the Etrac. You will also see that it’s great in sections where there is a lot of EMI. You will get a little more depth, especially on small items. For beaches I have heard great things about the excal but I’ve never used it. Having that said I know of 2 excal users who prefer the manticore in the wet, but still prefer excal in the water.

Great hunt! It was also great that you had Jeff there with the 800 to confirm what you were struggling to infer with the Maniticore. I have to tell you that I have yet to be convinced the Manticore is worth the extra cost compared to the 800. A friend of mine tried the Manticore and the 900 recently and he sold them only to go back to the 800. Oh, and he tried the Deus 1 and Deus 2 with the same results.

When you become proficient with a machine, it's hard to let it go, especially when it works! People said the same about the E-trac and CTX ....and yes they were good......but they were surpassed by the Equinox. Remember now, the Nox had issues with iron more so until the Fe 2 update came along. Also keep in mind, the Manticore has an update coming in near future. Having the Manticore in had now made my Nox feel primitive in comparison. The screen quality & menu layout is awesome! The construction is 100% better too! The coil isn't going to fling off & it's likely waterproof in comparison to that of the Nox. I'm not bashing the Equinox because we all know it's good but, Minelab has clearly made a better machine now............... The D2 is something special! I'll take that over the Nox all day but, that's my opinion!

@@bkjustice9390 Recovery speed! The Equinox performs better in iron infested sites. FBS detectors (CTX & E-trac) have a slower recovery speed in comparison to Multi-IQ. That's no secret! Don't get me wrong, the E-trac is still a good machine but, the Nox has the edge in that dept........I had the E-trac & used it for many years with great success but, The Equinox is better in my opinion when it comes to iron infested sites. First was BBS tech, then FBS to the now, faster response multi- IQ,......The tech simply has evolved just like everything else.

I enjoyed the video. My White's VX3/DFX 300 detectors are getting a little long in the tooth. Since White's is now defunct, I'm thinking of replacing those detectors with an Equinox. My main concern is with battery longevity and battery replacement on the Equinox. What is the lifespan of the rechargeable battery and can it be replaced by the user? Battery charging issues and complexity have steered me away from considering a Deus.

Merrill, I have a beef with you although I’m a huge fan of your channel. I have the CTX and have seen you bad mouth it in a number of your videos. I also have the Deus 2 and several other detectors including the Nox 800 so not really a newbie. I haven’t bought a Manticore because from everything I have seen it’s the love child of the CTX and the NOX. A CTX with a much faster processor, lighter weight and brings the best of the nox to add to the CTXs phenomenal capabilities . The CTX, I believe has better inferences from its target trace etc but then the Manticore’s target trace iteration is quite intriguing . The center line on the Manticore appears to be a slightly more refined version of the algorithm of the 12 line on the CTX. Yeah, the CTX was ridiculous in price but I think the Deus 2 forced minelab to not gouge as much as they would have if the Deus had not beaten them to market. I’ll never forgive minelab for not pushing updates (not a single one that I know of), when the were obviously improving the algorithm for presenting target trace and VID. Thanks for the opportunity to vent but stop bashing the CTX. Minelab has been forced to shoot themselves in the foot with pricing and that’s sweet revenge as far as I’m concerned. The CTX rocks but the marketing/PR people at Minelab utterly fumbled and stepped on themselves in handling their product lines. Again thanks for what you do. Norm

I consider myself an expert with the Equinox 800 - dug over 900 silver coins in 3 years in an area (Western NY) wear most dig less than 30 per year. From what you have shown, I believe the Manticore will allow me to keep that pace in areas that have been hammered much like Prospect Park. Thanks for all the help!!! KellyCo just notified me that a shipment is coming early next week so I may have one soon! HH

It's hard to judge a detector if you dig 5 silvers. If you hunted with a radio shack machine and came back with 5 silvers you will find good things to say about it. Sometimes you have to walk over a target at a certain angle to grab your attention enough to investigate whether to dig or not. That could be why nobody has hit the 2 inch silver coin and how he hit that deep piece of lead shot. I'm just curious to which frequencies the machine is using under high conductivity targets. I'm sure 1 is it's lowest but the other? I say/ask this because you mentioned not getting maybe low tones. Had you been in a gold mode you would've dug smaller targets but maybe not so deep on the coins because it runs with a higher frequency. I know that the 3 kHz and 15 kHz are a good dual frequency split for all metals or the 5kHz and 15 kHz is good which Fishers CZ-21 uses. But I noticed the dedicated gold machines that have been successful run anywhere from 28 kHz to some that use a 40 kHz and it's a single dedicated frequency. I have NOT used Minelabs (for personal reasons) so I am not familiar which 2 frequencies they use in which modes so I was just wondering it being you mentioned not finding low conductors. You guys dug Indians, Wheats, silver Roosies, Mercs, Washingtons & an SLQ (congratulations on that one BTW) but did either of you pull a "V" or a Buffalo? You would think there would be a nickel or two being you guys were pulling a variety of ironically "high conductor" coins. Can you choose the 2 frequencies out of the number it has. I think Legend allows it and possibly the Deus 2 IDK you probably can answer that. For the heck of it the next time you hit that park again if it allows maybe give it a shot with one of the frequencies it's processing be between the 7 kHz to 15 kHz with the second being it's lowest (maybe 1.5 kHz to 3 kHz I don't know what Minelabs high conductive frequency is they use I thought I read that the CTX uses the low 1.5 kHz which was part of a falsing problem it supposedly has. It's just a suggestion. The old nickels are OK to find although they don't look so good and of coarse the silver is nicer to find but i'm thinking more towards the line about finding the small gold rings or pins. Now I just thought of something were you digging everything or ignoring small numbers thinking about aluminum using high conductor because maybe those signals might have been the low conductive targets that you were curious about. Is it possible you thought it might have been a pull tab being the VDI number was in a PT but it might've been that nickel or something? Maybe this is my OCD over thinking it there lol. Well at least you got what you were shooting for so that made a successful day there nickels or not.
Nice hunt congrats to both of you
