I think that the key point that this video highlights might just be that 99% of finds are in the range of both detectors. The 1% that are just a little deeper or harder to detect might just be where the manticore shines. For most of us, the price isn't worth that 1%. Point to note also... Now there are multiple versions of the nox, you'll need to be more specific about which you are comparing. Do they all have the same detection power but different features? I'm lost on that part (as a Nokta guy I stopped paying attention!)
Thanks for your honest review. That's why I watch you. I lived in NH and MA for 20+ years and metal detected there Lots. Now I am in AZ and to old to detect. Thanks too you guys that post on RUclips I detect thru you.
Merrill, in heavy iron increase your recovery speed or slow down your swing to get better separation. It's amazing that you can go back to heavily hunted areas and still pull out silver!
I've been waiting for the Equinox vs. Manticore videos, and now they start arriving! Great stuff, and I wish I could put an extra "like" on this video for Jeff being in it! The two of you are just the most amazing metal detecting duo, and I always wish the videos with the two of you in it were at least twice the length! :D
Merrill, One other comment. You are a funny guy. Gut humor is timing. You really have improved at timing your humor. It comes off as funnier and is a nice break from the hunting. The bit you did with the glasses was hilarious. Bill
Awesome video as always brother .love your stuff .with all your help we wont be in the dark anymore about how stuff realy go down .hope you gona be on til we like 85 years old .thanks for all the work you do ring master!
As Jeff showed us, you must pinpoint first, then you can see what the detector is reading. Do you remember starting with the Nox-600? If you immediately started with 50-tones and all-metal you were overwhelmed and you dug far too much trash as a result.
I have had my 900 for three weeks now and totally amazed with it. I also have the Deus to and when I use the Deus to find a lot of good stuff I’m gonna come back over the same area with a 900 I find even more they are a great one to punch. There’s no doubt in my mind beside the screen and the headphones on the manticore the 900 is just as good no need to spend the extra money.
At the 4:20 minute mark, that's classic Minelab tech. The bouncing around, the trace appearing. The one thing the CTX handled really well is the ID - well enough that you could do a lot of the inference right from the screen, and depending on how you configured it, also from the sound. The technique of orienting the coil in a manner to chase out a signals signature has been possible with much older machines. Never 100% reliably though, as even machines I've been using for over 10 years, using similar methods to sniff out bottlecaps, have always been that guessed target. Any bend in even silver coins would cause the same iron grunt or visualization. I feel like the Equinox expanded both the VDI and tonal feedback ranges to cause us to dig more. I too have benefited from the unmasking, but feel a lot of it is way overhyped, and I'd trade the accuracy of the CTX ID over the wide ranges of the Equinox. There's no reason here in Canada a large cent should ring in on the same VDI range as iron, but that's what happens with the Equinox. And it's because certain large cents here used bronze, and not always copper. It's this need to adjust to the machine which has made me less of a believer in the hype of the Nox, because I have older machines that are much better dialed into the VDI and tones than the Equinox can ever achieve. With the added upside that none of those older machines have EMI sensitivity issues where I find myself needing to switch to single frequency on the Nox to stabilize it at locations where old sites I had no issues with EMI, suddenly became issues for EMI when using the "multi-frequency." Sorry for the long rant, but this is a meta topic for me, I'm still trying to get my hands on a Mantictore, but will provide feedback on that when I do. Great video Merrill!
A great video for sure Mr Merell, love that face pin!, great stuff!, God all my life i,ve been wanting to find a standing liberty quarter but to no avile, any way , would love to see a beach detecting video ( in the water video) with you and your friends to see how it works in the water.
What Merrill is not putting in consideration to his viewers , is that the Manticore can reach better depths due to the fact it's sensitivity can reach much higher levels. Of coarse that's when conditions allow for it. The Nox maxes out at 25. The Manticore can reach 35.
@@carlfr2977 That opinion still is yet to be verified & proved. Hopefully it does have that extra depth sensitivity, although sensitivity isn't the same thing as power output into the ground. 🙏🏻
@@jimcollins9999 I believe it's true! I mean that's why Minelab calls it the beast mode. When opportunity allows it, it should grab a deeper target better than having a lowered sensitivity. Yes, we need to see more reports. Plus, wait until we see the new update on it. Minelab may seriously improve this machine even better! We'll see?
@@carlfr2977 I hope so! That's what Merrill is trying to find out by recording these videos, and comparative reviews, along side the Nox800. The answers come over time. 👍
@@jimcollins9999 I'm sure it's not all the reason too but, it certainly aids it. No other Minelab detector has the scale of up to 35. I'd call it a boost mode in my opinion.... So far I can't bring it past 25 without some eratic reaction ......Minelab says that you enter beast mode after #26 though. They call it that for a reason.
notice how the well hammered old NYC park yielded much more silver and pennies, than the virgin previously undetected PA. farm trip ? Pa. farmers didn't drop a lot of coins. Kids would go unfed. When a nickel was lost during 1930s Great Depression on a farm, it better damn well be found, or someone got their butt kicked. A nickel meant a loaf of bread for big family 5-10 or more kids.
Merrill mate what an awesome video again i love it. To give you an idea i upgraded from the go find to the manticore and i know its a big step and let me tell you i have the same as you do in you ny park so many signals but i am determined to learn and i will put in the hours and figure this beast out. Your videos help me so much so thanks again looking forward to them mate. Greetings from the lowlands.
I bought a Manticore last year and sold it, liked my Deus ll much more, just because of the versatility and ease of use. I also think the Deus ll goes deeper
awesome vid Merrill, now you're focused on screen, and loaded for bear 🐻 on device settings... settled to your work, calm calculated detecting...I've seen this phenom before, heavily hunted areas will still yield dimes, pennies....the cheaper detectors, less experienced operators, will miss the small coins...and grab the quarters and larger first- leaving behind straggler dimes, pennies for the determined to find...those quarters are an amazing outlier for a hunted spot! iron trash camouflage was hiding them. just like deer hunting, you also need LUCK! when a big buck walks by at oddball location, you still must be able to take/make the shot. you have a WINGMAN...behind every Ace pilot, is a great wingman. I've found many bullets, ever wonder who fired them at what, why ? lol. SUPERB VIDEO 👍
Great Video and Great finds....And this is the only way to do a true comparison taking turns hearing signals on each machine...In all fairness for this test, jeff was using the 15" coil and the manticore had the stock 11"...... Maybe when the 15" coil becomes available for the manticore, do this field test again....also i know some people dont like air tests but i think it would be worth seeing with the 15" coil on both machines
. Aha. I stand corrected.. i watched the video again and in some angles where the coil is at the edge of the screen, the fisheye effect made his coil look oval....
Great video again , enjoyed the hunt. My Manticore should be here first week in March , won’t be digging till mid April maybe, but can get to know how to adjust for our steel core modern coins.
Great video. This is the best way to test! Air tests, or putting things on the ground with the coil up in the air really isn't telling you much. I'd love to do more coin detecting content on my channel but we can't dig with shovels, unless you get permission to do a private farm or something.
I have got Manta with 11" since this March and when I compare it with my more than five years old Equinox 800 with 15" coil, as for the performance, I can not see a big difference, however, the Manta is much more comfortable. Thanks for your video from NYC's park.
I sold my equinox and just bought an extra deus 2 and a big coil. My opinion the deus is the best machine for me. It does what I want, it's comfortable to use all day, and the XP ecosystem is great. Lots of accessories, headphone options, backpacks, hard cases, and 2 extra years of warranty. Oh and I love the fact I can charge it while eating lunche or driving to the next spot. 20 minutes of charge adds 2 hours of detecting time. Plus it only takes max of 3 hours to charge compared to overnight like the other good detectors require. Thanks Merrill great comparison!
Merrrill, really well done video. Yoiu structured it very well and Jeff fit in seamlessly. I do think that there is interest in comparing the Manticore to the Deus II as opposed to the Equinox. Perhaps at some point you could bring your Deus II and hand off the Manticore to Jeff. That would be a fund video to watch. Bill
That was an interesting video, seems like they were matching each other in those conditions at least. Maybe once you get more proficient with the manticore you might be able to get more performance from it.
1 year on, do you still think there's not much difference between the Manticore and Equinox? I use a 800. Was thinking to upgrade but not sure it's better enough. What do you think?
I just picked up the Nox and I finally got a little time on it. I found a merc dine yesterday. First silver with the nox yaay. My question. Is what's Jeff's settings on his Nox? I believe it might be all metal but would be interested to know exactly. I run the 600 so maybe his settings might be out of range for me but getting close would be great. Thanks great video I'm learning the machine and so far love it!!!
What a great dig in the park. Both of you did so well. The target trace and the red line were indicating iron in the early parts of your video. The target trace also gave indications of multi-targets, a problem in the urban/suburban area. Did that help at all? The 800 and probably 900 (yeah waterproofed) are probably going to be good enough for most people (along with D2 and the Legend). I keep hearing how good the Manticore does on tiny objects but it is clear it takes time to fully sync with the Manticore. I have heard that if there is an object on the center line it probably is not iron.
I think you are referring to the pinpointing of the target. Generally a good target pinpoints over where the signal hits it. If iron is the target or nail shaped iron is next to a good target it throws that pinpoint off from the line it is hitting on.
Recently purchased a Xterra pro....I've noticed it's a lot easier to use with the notch on as well. Too many signals to listen to without it. The depth is every bit as good as an equinox 600
I found this post today worth noting: "The problem was recovery speed. the game has changed where I live. If you want to find old coins you need to hunt iron that people ran from in past." underlying issue ? people don't drop pre-1964 silver, pre-1933 gold coins anymore. only so many in ground, and less and less in ground daily, as areas get pounded by detectorists, and more recovered. we're going into era of digging every hit in hopes of finding coins. flipside is, where Merrill detects old NYC beaches, will always be best spot. seaside changes daily, relics and coins wash up from offshore, replenishing it. IMHO, he has best metal detecting area in country. it's like people are still dropping silver, gold there, the ocean washes in old stuff from ages ago. detecting is hobby of diminishing returns, unless there's new ground under your feet constantly. there's only so much down there, they stopped making it, a wasting asset just like mining anything else. Merrill has the most productive mine.
Been out of the game for a long while now. Got your Manticore guide and watched a bunch of your videos. Would you say it would be an upgrade on my old Etrac and Excal? Mainly hunting farms out east and some beaches.
I owned the Etrac. What you will notice is a huge upgrade in speed and operation in space (close targets no problem) you will also have a fast learning curve because the mask is the next generation of the Etrac. You will also see that it’s great in sections where there is a lot of EMI. You will get a little more depth, especially on small items. For beaches I have heard great things about the excal but I’ve never used it. Having that said I know of 2 excal users who prefer the manticore in the wet, but still prefer excal in the water.
Love ur videos.. I use an xp deus 2 , do u have a setting for the relics program it works well, but can it be a better...any advise would be appreciated.
Great, informative video..thanks! I,m still on the fence about the manticore (use and love my nox 800). In these high target areas would it help to use the small "sniper coil"?
Nice to hear an honest opinion. I have 2 Nox 800s one for each arm!😊 and I know how to set them up for various soil conditions. I also use the D1 and D2. The D2 gets most use because it is SMF and lighter than the Nox. But I am still comparing the D2 to the Nox and will be using the Nox again due to its superior EMI cancelling ability using the Manual mode. The Nox has 19 small frequency shifts, the D2 only 7 which is nowhere near enough.
Update: I found more this weekend on land with the Nox 800 and the small elliptical Coiltek coil than with the D2. I will be using the Nox again on the next dig which is going to be in the best part of England for MD finds. If I don’t get lucky I will swap to the D1 then D2.
I enjoyed the video. My White's VX3/DFX 300 detectors are getting a little long in the tooth. Since White's is now defunct, I'm thinking of replacing those detectors with an Equinox. My main concern is with battery longevity and battery replacement on the Equinox. What is the lifespan of the rechargeable battery and can it be replaced by the user? Battery charging issues and complexity have steered me away from considering a Deus.
Yes, another great day for coins, and again Merrill, you are the king of the Mercs! I love the coinage guys and the laughs, thank you Merrill! I had a blast...Oooops! the rosy dime was a 1954, not 1964, don't sale yourself short big guy. Egg out!
Merrill of all the detectors you own which one do you favor the most and have the most fun with? I really appreciate your videos especially now that I am forced to take a metal detecting sabbatical due to a work-related injury but hope to be back in the full swing soon. Thanks again for your awesome videos.
In this case it is the decades of bottle cap drops, pull tabs, coins, iron and other debris in the soil. This park gets tens of thousands of visitors per day.
I was tickled pink to find a '46 quarter last week. The slq would be a dream, beautiful coin. Do you have to mute the Manticore when you turn on the pinpointer? It drives my Simplex crazy.
Hi Merrill, greetings from the UK :) I would like to ask you about your honest opinion on the ( not mainstream known ) Nexus Metal Detectors, I personally had never heard of this Brand / Company before, but was very impressed by these machines capabilities at separation & depth in recent videos I watched. It just got me thinking why these machines are in some eyes, classed as old hat technology! when in actual fact these machines are still relevant today!. All The Best :)
I was in all metal for the unproductive part of the day and the standard (pre set) ferrous limits later on. I moved the recovery speed to 3 as time went on.
If thats the worse traffic in NYC is still light years ahead of Toronto (at times) ive been stuck in rush hour traffic in Toronto for hours before to drive like 20 minutes,I sent a picture to my discord friends and someone literally ask if they are evacuating a hurricane lmao They say Toronto is an hours drive from Toronto
It may not be too far in the distant future when Metal Detectors will feature stereo audio and the different tones can be mixed for R ear versus L ear to enhance Audio Identification of targets.
Great hunt! It was also great that you had Jeff there with the 800 to confirm what you were struggling to infer with the Maniticore. I have to tell you that I have yet to be convinced the Manticore is worth the extra cost compared to the 800. A friend of mine tried the Manticore and the 900 recently and he sold them only to go back to the 800. Oh, and he tried the Deus 1 and Deus 2 with the same results.
When you become proficient with a machine, it's hard to let it go, especially when it works! People said the same about the E-trac and CTX ....and yes they were good......but they were surpassed by the Equinox. Remember now, the Nox had issues with iron more so until the Fe 2 update came along. Also keep in mind, the Manticore has an update coming in near future. Having the Manticore in had now made my Nox feel primitive in comparison. The screen quality & menu layout is awesome! The construction is 100% better too! The coil isn't going to fling off & it's likely waterproof in comparison to that of the Nox. I'm not bashing the Equinox because we all know it's good but, Minelab has clearly made a better machine now............... The D2 is something special! I'll take that over the Nox all day but, that's my opinion!
@@bkjustice9390 Recovery speed! The Equinox performs better in iron infested sites. FBS detectors (CTX & E-trac) have a slower recovery speed in comparison to Multi-IQ. That's no secret! Don't get me wrong, the E-trac is still a good machine but, the Nox has the edge in that dept........I had the E-trac & used it for many years with great success but, The Equinox is better in my opinion when it comes to iron infested sites. First was BBS tech, then FBS to the now, faster response multi- IQ,......The tech simply has evolved just like everything else.

I think you are referring to the pinpointing of the target. Generally a good target pinpoints over where the signal hits it. If iron is the target or nail shaped iron is next to a good target it throws that pinpoint off from the line it is hitting on.
Glad to hear connery’s voice living on in this channel haha
Yesh Shir!!!
Recently purchased a Xterra pro....I've noticed it's a lot easier to use with the notch on as well. Too many signals to listen to without it. The depth is every bit as good as an equinox 600
Very nice comparison between an ox and a manticore, I like the manticore for the screen Id and it’s on my bucket list
I found this post today worth noting:
"The problem was recovery speed. the game has changed where I live. If you want to find old coins you need to hunt iron that people ran from in past."
underlying issue ? people don't drop pre-1964 silver, pre-1933 gold coins anymore. only so many in ground, and less and less in ground daily, as areas get pounded by detectorists, and more recovered. we're going into era of digging every hit in hopes of finding coins.
flipside is, where Merrill detects old NYC beaches, will always be best spot. seaside changes daily, relics and coins wash up from offshore, replenishing it.
Like 25 😉 looks like both are good and the manticore should pin point it more ... experience is key i assume with both
Been out of the game for a long while now.
Thank You!@@MetalDetectingNYC
Great vid as always 😁 keep up the good work, I look forward to more info on the Manticore 😊 HH Merrill 😀 and take care 🙂
In your opinion, if you could only purchase one detector between deus2 and manticore, which would you choose?
Love ur videos.. I use an xp deus 2 , do u have a setting for the relics program it works well, but can it be a better...any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks for vid and your time.
Really fun hunt and solid Sean Connery impressions. “Well dun shur…well dun!”
Great, informative video..thanks! I,m still on the fence about the manticore (use and love my nox 800). In these high target areas would it help to use the small "sniper coil"?
Yes in the real crowded areas.
A great hunt!! lots of "Shilver" Mr. Bond!
I'm getting a equinox 900 ❤. I'm scared of getting my gpx4500 wet and Sandy. I'm saving it for Kalgoorlie.
I tried to rig one up to my pet bobcat but she panicked and ran away with the coil.
Update: I found more this weekend on land with the Nox 800 and the small elliptical Coiltek coil than with the D2. I will be using the Nox again on the next dig which is going to be in the best part of England for MD finds. If I don’t get lucky I will swap to the D1 then D2.
By d2 you mean deus 2???
That one item looked like a key for an old watch Timepiece.
Love those Mercury Dimes!
Hey hey you're back swinging 😄
I enjoyed the video. My White's VX3/DFX 300 detectors are getting a little long in the tooth. Since White's is now defunct, I'm thinking of replacing those detectors with an Equinox. My main concern is with battery longevity and battery replacement on the Equinox. What is the lifespan of the rechargeable battery and can it be replaced by the user? Battery charging issues and complexity have steered me away from considering a Deus.
Tengo un nox 800 hace 3 años..la bateria me dura 10 hrs y nuevo duraba 12 hrs.
Hola compañero quería preguntar que detestor de metales me aconseja mejor Manticore o equinox 900 gracias saludos
Hola Angel!
Great hunt man. Take care!
I'm staying with my 800 over the Manticore and the Deus 2 for the time being. I am watch for used 800s to come up for sale at a cheap price.
hi from Slovenia3 days ago i bought the Legend. becose of you my man
Would you benefit from the 6" coil at that site? It is so busy with targets.
Does the nox 9 still leak? Thank you.
Not that I’ve heard of . 600 and 800 yes.
I’ve never heard of that machine. I loved my Quick Silver.
Wow you guys did good in prospect 🕳️not so easy to do but then again it’s Deadpool Jeff and M🦡the awesomeness 🔥👍🫡
Might find Jimmy Hoffa...lol. Got some very interesting finds guys...I used to live in Elmont, Queens...don't miss it either..lol. Thanks..
Boo!
Is it the depth or the minerals in the soil that effects the trace on the Manticore?
In this case it is the decades of bottle cap drops, pull tabs, coins, iron and other debris in the soil. This park gets tens of thousands of visitors per day.
I was tickled pink to find a '46 quarter last week. The slq would be a dream, beautiful coin. Do you have to mute the Manticore when you turn on the pinpointer? It drives my Simplex crazy.
No, manticore is fine with pinpointer on
Hi Merrill, greetings from the UK :) I would like to ask you about your honest opinion on the ( not mainstream known ) Nexus Metal Detectors, I personally had never heard of this Brand / Company before, but was very impressed by these machines capabilities at separation & depth in recent videos I watched. It just got me thinking why these machines are in some eyes, classed as old hat technology! when in actual fact these machines are still relevant today!. All The Best :)
I can’t wait to try one. I’m due to receive mine in late July
@@MetalDetectingNYC Sweet!...can I ask which machine you chose sir
You fella's had a great day finding all that Silver,Wheats and Indians !!!
How can we compare signals when we can’t hear them. You should have turned on the speakers for this video.
Veoma dobri nalazi,dobro traganje,svako dobro i pozdrav iz Srbine🤝🇷🇸🤠
Great video, Can I ask what were your upper and lower ferrous limits and what recovery speed were you running? Keepem coming....
I was in all metal for the unproductive part of the day and the standard (pre set) ferrous limits later on. I moved the recovery speed to 3 as time went on.
If thats the worse traffic in NYC is still light years ahead of Toronto (at times) ive been stuck in rush hour traffic in Toronto for hours before to drive like 20 minutes,I sent a picture to my discord friends and someone literally ask if they are evacuating a hurricane lmao
They say Toronto is an hours drive from Toronto
That murk is gorgeous
Thank you!
@@MetalDetectingNYC sweet find and AUsome videos ! That’s for posting!
It may not be too far in the distant future when Metal Detectors will feature stereo audio and the different tones can be mixed for R ear versus L ear to enhance Audio Identification of targets.
Whites Spectra V3i !!! Old , super !
ANY new rig is going to have to be a LOT better than the 800 before I'd even consider it considering the ridiculous prices charged.
@@mortonyakimadetectingthepa9015 Agreed!!!
@@carlfr2977 You say the Etrac was surpassed by the Nox. In which ways do you feel so other than weight?
@@bkjustice9390 Recovery speed! The Equinox performs better in iron infested sites. FBS detectors (CTX & E-trac) have a slower recovery speed in comparison to Multi-IQ. That's no secret! Don't get me wrong, the E-trac is still a good machine but, the Nox has the edge in that dept........I had the E-trac & used it for many years with great success but, The Equinox is better in my opinion when it comes to iron infested sites. First was BBS tech, then FBS to the now, faster response multi- IQ,......The tech simply has evolved just like everything else.
